To get the economy back on track, will President Barack Obama have to break his

pledge not to raise taxes on 95 percent of Americans? In a "This Week" exclusive,

Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner told me, "We're going to have to do what's necessary."

WHEN  Will    Congress    Reform The Darn Alternative Minimum Tax?

AMT forces some to figure taxes twice

Under alternative minimum tax, those with higher incomes must pay whichever amount is higher.

Knight Ridder Newspapers

Many taxpayers don't realize they're actually supposed to calculate their taxes twice.

After doing it under the regular rules, they're supposed to do it again using Alternative

Minimum Tax rules invented to ensure that wealthy taxpayers pay their fair share.

They owe whichever bill is higher.

The AMT is looming larger for more taxpayers because Americans are making more money

and the AMT system isn't indexed for inflation.

The irony is that each time lawmakers cut regular taxes they push

more middle-class Americans

closer to owing the AMT instead.

Congress created the AMT

in 1969

because lawmakers were outraged that

155 taxpayers had paid no federal income tax

despite incomes exceeding $200,000.

Adjusted for inflation, that's nearly   $1.2 million today.  (Go After That Figure Today!)

Thanks to a congressional patch that modestly boosted how much income is exempt from

the AMT through 2005, this tax will mainly target higher-income taxpayers this April 15.

But several items can cause the AMT to pounce unexpectedly on less-affluent taxpayers

who have large families, own homes in pricey neighborhoods, or cash in stock or stock

options.

Barring a significant overhaul in Congress, the

Treasury Department estimates the AMT

will catch 34.8 million taxpayers in 2010 - or

one out of every three individual taxpayers.

"...My colleague, ABC News' Teddy Davis has the story:

Tens of thousands of anti-big government activists are expected in Washington on

Saturday as part of a "March on Washington" being organized by FreedomWorks, a

conservative group headed by former House Majority Leader Dick Armey, R-Texas.

A FreedomWorks staffer told ABC News that the organization's offices at 601 Pennsylvania

and....

The FreedomWorks staffer did not fear for his safety but worried that it was an effort to disrupt the organization's ability to round up activists in advance of tomorrow's "March on Washington" which is expected to bring tens of thousands of activists to the nation's capital.

The FreedomWorks staffers says that 50 volunteers were forced to leave the office where they were making calls encouraging people to come to tomorrow's event.

.....................................................

That's interesting....  I wonder... who wanted to disrupt their event?

Do we have any idea?

The tax code needs completely remade. I am all for a national sales tax that taxes heavily on high end luxury items and a heavy sin tax. Those who can afford to buy a ferrari will buy it even if it is taxed 100%. The current system punishes the responsible and encourages debt. The IRS is a waste of money. The tax code is rediculous. Whoever thought it would be OK to make it so complicated that people have to hire someone to figure out how much they owe. Those complications lead to loop holes that allow many to not pay anything. Although I do not blame them for not paying or paying very little when I see all the waste. We are heading for corporate socialism. This has been a growing problem for a long time. Leaving the Gold standard 30+ yrs ago was a mistake. Unless there is drastic change soon I am sticking with my 5 year plan of leaving in 5 years. I am not alone. Many of my friends are looking at moving out of the country and taking their money with them. It has just become too much. BTW I am a fan of Obama. atleast he is trying. I would like to see him try harder and risk pissing all of the govt off. That is what the people want, real change, not patches in the dike that is about to burst.

I have to raid my poor little IRA to pay my taxes...  I have a modest home (pricewise)

and income..  over 10,000 a year taxes .. that is insane.     At least in Canada I would get Health Care.   NYS needs to get a grip.  Wealthy here are pandered to... pay sm. taxes.
