Seven die from complications after unknown flu type in Ternopil region

Ternopil, October 27 (Interfax) - Seven people had died in the Ternopil region of Ukraine from complications caused by flu as of Monday, Bohdan Oniskiv, the head of the Ternopil regional administration's health department, said at a press conference.

Virtually all of these people were "young and physically healthy," he said.

About 6,000 people have visited medical institutions with symptoms of an unknown type of flu over the past several days in Ternopil, he said.

"The flu type can be determined only in one and a half weeks. The final results should come from London," Oniskiv said.

Seven flu deaths have been reported in the Ternopol region, the only Ukrainian area having a flu epidemic, head of the regional health department Bogdan Onyskiv told a Tuesday press conference. Doctors explained the deaths of young and physically fit persons with flu complications. The flu epidemic in western Ukraine started two weeks ago, yet the type of the virus is still unknown. “It is possible to name the type of the flu only in ten days. Ukrainian and British doctors are making tests. The final results will be announced once a London laboratory confirms them,” Onyskiv said. The Ternopol region has over 10,000 flu cases. Public events are prohibited, and 109 schools with 42,000 students are under quarantine. Experts explain the early cold and flu outbreak with a sharp drop of temperatures a week before the beginning of the heating season. The region did not have flu epidemics for the past five or seven years. The local residents had no immunity from flu. An increase of the cold and flu rate was reported from all the Ukrainian regions, but the situation is generally stable, a source at the Ukrainian Health Ministry said. The rate is high in Chernigov, Lvov, Kiev, Vinnitsa, Dnepropetrovsk, Donetsk, Zaporozhye and Kharkov.

Number of victims to unknown virus growing! State of emergency to be imposed in Ukraine? (updated at 11:13 am)
MIGnews.com.ua

Yesterday, on October 29 some media reported that allegedly in the Ternopil Region cases of ill people with typhus were registered, and that militarized detachments limited entrance and departure from the territory of the Ternopil Region. However, the Public Relations Center of the Ministry of Emergencies in the Ternopil Region denied information about it.

Yesterday, on October 29 the chief physician of the regional sanitary-epidemiological station Halyna Hrynchuk assured that Kyiv Region is ready for prophylaxis and treatment of influenza, reported Yulia Makoveeva, MIGnews.com.ua correspondent.

In the Ternopil Region 25 percents of infectiologists who worked with patients with acute respiratory viral infections are ill, the chairman of the Association of infectiologists of Ukraine Mykhaylo Andreychin reported yesterday, on October 29 at a press conference.

"One fourth of doctors had such a disease or they are ill with it now. Fortunately, they are recovering now and soon again be able to work", - said Mykhaylo Andreychin.

Yesterday, on October 29 in Morshyn, Lviv Region a doctor from a local hospital, who contacted with patients with viral infection and visited them, died, is reported by the Deputy Chief of the Health protection department in the Lviv Region Iryna Mykytchak. According to her, a 56-year-old woman "had been previously diagnosed with pneumonia," UNIAN reports.

The medical facilities in the Lviv region have medicines for treatment of influenza and acute respiratory infections for the three-day supply, is said in the summary of information of the General Directorate of Health Protection in the Lviv Regional at the State regional Administration, UNIAN reported.

Because of the mass acute respiratory infections residents of the Lviv Region began to buy up antiviral drugs and flu masks. Yesterday, on October 29 the Lviv residents could not purchase masks. Consequently, the director general of the Lviv regional pharmaceutical corporation Nelia Byk appealed to all residents of the region with the request not to buy drugs without the need, Glavred cites the Ministry’s report as saying.

Ministry of Health recommends using the methods of traditional and alternative medicine for prevention of acute respiratory viral diseases, including influenza, Ukrainian News cites the report of the Ministry as saying.

According to experts of Ministry of Health, filling nutrition, conditioning to the cold and frequent airing of premises are effective during the period of active disease. Also, the Ministry recommends using general health-improving and tonic immunomodulatory drugs. In addition, the Ministry recommends frequent hand washing and cover a nose and mouth with a handkerchief when coughing and sneezing.

The number of people suffering from unknown virus in Ukraine is growing. According to the latest data of Ministry of Health, 30 deaths of flu and acute respiratory viral diseases have been recorded, starting from October, 19, in the Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv Regions. In particular, from October, 19 and until 04:00 p.m. on October 29 6 deaths have been recorded in the Ivano-Frankivsk Region, 12 - in the Lviv Region (including 1 child) and 12 - in the Ternopil Region. As of 04:00 p.m. on October 29 the number of people sick with influenza and acute respiratory viral infections in these regions has reached 37, 923 people, 951 out of them have been hospitalized.

11:04 a.m. The information has been received that 3 people died from complicated pneumonia for the last 3 days in Chernivtsi. In total, during the last day the number of people sick with acute respiratory vital infections in Chernivtsi increased from 2,623 to 4,053 people. Only in 8 cases influenza was diagnosed.

According to the doctors, now in Chernivtsi unidentified viral infection is being observed. The first results of virological studies that will identify the virus, will be ready only in two weeks.

Also, three people died in the Rivne Region, and one person- in Transcarpathia.

In total, according to unconfirmed reports, 37 people died.

In connection with this anti-epidemic measures are introduced at the Lviv railway.

A spokesman for the chairman of the Lviv regional state administration Olha Kulyk also reported that "Lviv airport and Lviv Customs are under control”.

The Ternopil Regional Council decided to hold an extraordinary session on October 30. MPs will start the meeting at 02:00 p.m. today.

The emergency antiepidemic and antiepizootic Committee will be gathered today in the Cabinet of Ministers, declared First Deputy Prime Minister Olexander Turchynov in the air of 5 Kanal.

In addition, commenting on the growth of drug prices, he appealed to owners of pharmacies: "Stop be a parasite on the problems of citizens and do not play with the prices because we will have to answer for it. We are not joking, and we will act fairly tightly."

Olexander Turchynov also said that the leadership of the Ternopil Regional Health Protection Department "waited for a few weeks, did not informed the center and only after they had realized they would not cope with the situation, attended the press conference, instead of immediately informing Kyiv”.

Poland is keeping an eye on the situation with a possible virus epidemic in Ukraine. But while the State Sanitary Inspectorate of the country (GIS) does not see reasons to limit or close traffic on the common border. According to the GIS, the inspection has instructed its offices in Rzeszow and Lublin strengthen sanitary control at checkpoints on the common border, as well as monitor the current situation. In addition, the service should inform travelers about the possible threat of the epidemic and prevent the need to immediately contact a doctor in case of symptoms appearing.

GIS representative noted that from October 31 to November 3 the number of Poles crossing the Polish-Ukrainian border, will increase because many people will visit the cemeteries in Ukraine.

Member of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Health Lilia Hrihorovich (Our Ukraine-People’s Self-Defense faction) is convinced of the necessity to declare the state of emergency in five regions of Ukraine.

MP of the Verkhovna Rada from the Party of Regions faction, deputy chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Health Viktor Korzh says that the Ministry of Health is not ready to struggle against flu and acute respiratory viral infections epidemic.

Director of the Ukrainian Center for influenza and respiratory infections, the Ministry of Health of Ukraine Olexander Hrynevich is convinced that Ukraine needs a massive vaccination against influenza in connection with a high incidence of acute respiratory infections. By reports of Interfax-Ukraine, UNIAN, Ukrainian News, Ukrainskaya pravda

As a reminder, October 28 flu epidemic in the Ternopil Region, which had appeared a week ago, mowed down nearly 10,000 of residents. Moreover - unknown virus has already killed seven people. Ministry of Health has confirmed 20 deaths from pneumonia in Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv Regions.

A closed meeting has been held in Ivano-Frankivsk, at which participants agreed that epidemic of the so-called "pneumonic plague" is being spread throughout Ukraine. But the problem is its form is unknown, it is ATYPICAL nobody knows how to treat it.

It is starting to look like that coyote. I know India had said this about a month ago. They were experiencing rapid deaths. Looks like victims now are dying within 3 days of onset in many fatal cases.

Coyote- you are one of the serious dataminers on here. We are trying to find in the U.S.
how much this bug has changed and also we may get a third wave back from India.

Usually in Pandemics the third wave has never been as bad- but then again-
the Black Death following the Bubonic Plague in Europe was really another wave.

If this mutates in Asia and comes back- we will be hard pressed to have an effective vaccine. We haven't got the one we've got out well yet.

We need a sequence badly from the Indian strain to see if it is indeed a mutation and how much of one it is.

Hang in there.

From here on out- its gonna get real intense.

Im seeing traveling increasing risk (students for sporting competitions, cross country truckers etc) and of course also those attending or teaching in schools and colleges. Im seeing about a 3 day deterioration from onset of symptoms, to death in fatalities. Lungs effected. I hope it has not mutated. Im pretty sure this is what they were reporting in India about a month ago.

Poland to shut border with Ukraine after flu outbreak?
30.10.2009 13:52

Poland’s health authorities are to decide whether extra security measures should be taken after the outbreak of a flu epidemic in Ukraine.

The Chief Sanitary Inspectorate (GIS) is monitoring Polish-Ukrainian border crossings. “People who are travelling to Ukraine are being informed about the flu hazard and instructed how to protect themselves against it,” says Tomasz Miszczak from GIS.

Ukraine’s health minister has announced a state of emergency after thirty-three people died from an unknown flu virus in western Ukraine, near the Polish border.

Almost 1000 people, mainly from the Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv Regions, infected with the virus have been hospitalized, including almost 500 children. Hundreds of people have been referred to medical centres and clinics with flu symptoms.

Earlier, Poland’s health hinister, Ewa Kopacz, announced that Polish-Ukrainian border crossings might be closed if the flu virus turns out to be dangerous for Poles. She added that at the moment there is no need to do this.

Border traffic is getting heavier as Poles visit their relatives’ graves in Ukraine to celebrate All Saints’ Day. (mg)

Very interesting story. I found this located within another story about vaccines.

The World Health Organization is sending a team of experts to Ukraine to look into reports of severe H1N1 disease there, a spokesperson for the global health agency said Friday.

Gregory Hartl said the team was being pulled together by the WHO's Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network, which goes by the acronym GOARN.

The team will travel early next week to the eastern European country, which has closed schools and banned public meetings in response to a spike in cases of acute respiratory illness believed to be H1N1.

RSOE EDIS SITUATION UPDATE : 2009-11-01 03:03:33 - Ukraine
'Ukraine's swine flu epidemic is spreading at an alarming rate. The number of deaths has risen to nearly 50. President Viktor Yushchenko made the announcement, having put the number of victims at 11 just 24 hours earlier. The latest figures suggest 150,000 are sick with H1N1. Schools, universities and playgroups have been closed for the next three weeks. Mass gatherings have also been banned. Panic buying of masks and flu remedies is sweeping the country according to local media reports. The government also announced an emergency package of 40 million euros to go towards anti-swine flu measures. One woman queuing for medicine said: "What can I say? There is no medicine in the chemists. How come nobody prepared for this epidemic? Children are sick. The elderly are sick. There are no masks, not even basic pills. People are queuing and waiting for supplies to come, but nobody knows if they will come or not." The price of flu medicines rose by as much as 300 per cent in Ukraine during the previous bird flu outbreak.'

It's time to place this on a sticky.

This could be the same H1N1, and the Ukraine has limited (or no) med supplies & antivirals such as tamiflu.  Or something has changed.  The numbers indicate this is more severe than what we've seen.

It seems (from what they are saying) that the reason for so many deaths is due to limited medicine, people waiting too long to go to the doctor and not adequate enough medical equipment to deal with severe cases.  This could be the case, or....it could be a more severe strain.  Not sure who to believe at this point.

It is hemorrhagic. And if they respond to this with the same mentality, they will make it immune to Tamiflu- and this could get a lot more virulent.  Is it a mutated H1N1? We can run a sequence on this in 3 days. Need to realize we have some amazing technology and toys and it is not that hard to figure stuff out. For instance, the differences in the sequence, the markers, and look at the symptoms, and way it behaves. It is not 2-3 days to catch- it is 7. It results in some serious bleeding respiratory and it kills.

Notable is it kills those over 60 as well. So much for the Baby Boomer free out card.

Albert, I am thinking maybe 3 Pandemics at once. We already have 6-7. And as per other research we are thinking two or three viruses traveling together and hitting and really putting people in a serious way.

Why aren't they giving Relenza?  You know Relenza works. Because - they are saving it.

Has anyone even bothered to find out where the cases came from? In HIV we could track the people. How hard is it to ask patient 0- there was a time when could find patient 0- what country did this come from?

I heard that the spanish flu of 1918 was deadly when it mutated in the troops that were exposed to chemical weapons like agent orange....and the combination caused the virus to drift....if that is true was not Chenobyl in the Ukraine region affected by radiation and is it possible that swine flu has mutated much like the 1918 did because of radiation and I thought I read this some place...anyone read about is also?

This is what I was trying to say

Time Line To Disaster

April 6, 1917

• U.S. declares war on Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, Germany and the Ottoman Empire.

• America swings into full production of war material.

• American men are drafted into military service and deployed for training in Spain.

• ALL NEW RECRUITS ARE GIVEN MANDATORY VACCINATIONS—including a "broad-spectrum" live virus influenza vaccination.

• Rockefeller makes millions in vaccine sales while consolidating Standard Oil contracts worldwide.

• The first British soldiers committed to World War I are deployed to Iraq to protect American oil interests there.

• Following mass vaccine injections, U.S. soldiers are crowded into troop ships and sent to "train" in Spain. Seasick and stressed, soldiers aged 18-34 exhibit influenza symptoms on the voyage.

• Immediately after arriving in Spain, U.S. soldiers are "trained," that is, exposed to the various forms of gas they will experience in the trenches in France

• Exposure to these highly toxic gasses causes the live-virus influenza organisms to mutate into an extremely lethal and highly communicable form of virus.

• Millions of young, healthy men and women aged 18-34 die worldwide as a result of vaccinations combined with novel and highly toxic chemicals.

"Millions of young, healthy men and women aged 18-34 die worldwide as a result of vaccinations combined with novel and highly toxic chemicals."

This is a bit of an odd sentence because it isn't clear whether it is suggesting that the virus combined with toxic chemicals somehow became worse (sounds like what happened to Spiderman) - or because of damage done by chemical exposure made them more susceptible to death from the virus.  If it is the latter then that should be reassuring since most of us haven't been exposed to mustard gas or whatever it was that was unleashed on our troops. Somebody help me out here, but I don't think that viruses get their genetic material from environmental chemicals.
Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean I'm wrong.

Loribearme, Penham said to try and use credible sources and Prison Planet is not one of them. I'm betting the reason you didn't post a link is because you probably jacked that post from the dysfunctional Prison Planet Forum.

It would be nice if you tried to post from credible sources.

Coyote, where do you get this info. from? According to everything I can find on the Ukraine there has been 34 deaths so far! Hardly soaring are they!
Why don't you stop spreading this nonsense. There's only been about 7200 deaths from Novel H1N1 in the whole world thus far. This not a "killer" flu by any stretch of the imagination.
Altering the law is unlikely to be sufficient for change in the presence of a pervasive culture of corruption.

Whatever is happening in The Ukraine, it's off and running now.  We will need to track the CFR as well as all information as accurately as possible so we can figure out what we're dealing with.   Another flu virus piggybacking off h1n1?   These "non-h1n1" and "unexplained" deaths is a little odd.

Last check today they were at 150,000+ Confirmed cases and 48 deaths in Ukraine. That's about a .03% CFR so far and overall the death rate has been extremely low.

Its too early to even begin calculating a CFR.   It is quite possible that the number of deaths are underestimated.  We need to give this time and see what the next several days brings us in terms of new information.   Time will tell....

Many people were just infected so they still need a week or two before they might die. That could also cause the CFR to climb some.

We would have a difficult time comparing death rates between countries... It is not something we want to do.... focus on.  It isn't nice to point out any particular countries rate of ill health and adding H1N1... the number of deaths it causes.  The death rate would have to be extremely high for concern , which it isn't at this point, mainly because they were smart to close down schools and mass gatherings.

the numbers I see are that

the numbers were 30 (some reports say 11) yesterday and the deaths are numbered at 53 "today" (Nov 2 over there).

My exchange student from Ukraine calls home on the weekend and says that most schools in her region (W) are closed and people are very scared.  It seems to be moving fast and some go from well to hospital within 24 hours.  It does not sound good.

Caution since I am not sure about the souce but:
iReport —

Ukrainina officials may not inform about the real situation with the swine flu spread throughout the country. "So far over 500 people have died because of the flu," - Mykola Chyzhenko, m.d. said. "Authorities are trying to avoid panic by not telling the truth."

http://bleaknews.wordpress.com/2009/11/01/rsoe-edis-situation-update-no-1-3-ukraine-epidemic-hazard/
This is an interesting update on the situation in Ukraine.
Notice that on the 29th the had 7 deaths listed and by the 30th 30 or 83 (depending on which report you look at).
It appears that it is hitting mostly those <45 years and that pneumonia is the common complication.

Again my exchange student is in constant contact via email to friends and says that schools are closed, people are afraid to go outside and into any kinds of groups.

Glow,

I understand that they have closed them for 3 weeks.  - also social gatherings, political gatherings,   but they are not sure about the soccer (go figure).  They have cancelled military recruitment and travel. The people are very scared. They have asked for aid from other nations and hope to have 16 tons of Tamiflu delivered.  The labs in London are checking the strains.

Thank you for the information. I had read on another blog that about 4 out of the roughly 60 deaths were doctors. Have you seen that in your reading? Sounds like a very high percentage of HCW if true.  Thank you again.

Yes, I have seen that number in several places.  (4 HCW).  The numbers of deaths may be much higher than reported since there seem to be some delay in reports and many people are just not getting out.

Most of my info comes from "students" that are in contact with my exchange student.  Most are sitting at home and do not go out due to fear.  I am not sure how reliable the information is.  However, it is clear that many people are home sick and many people are just "holding up" at home.  The reports from those students is that the medical hospitals are full and many people are being turned away.  It is unclear if those turned away are really very sick or just mostly "afraid".
The politicians are not generally trusted to be forthcoming with the true facts of things but are basically stopping things for 3 weeks, calling for help from Poland and others.  That is not to go unnoticed.
