Flamingo deaths spark bird flu probe in Bahamas
28 Feb 2006 16:03:36 GMT Source: Reuters By John Marquis NASSAU, Bahamas, Feb 28 (Reuters) - Health experts were dispatched on Tuesday to the southern Bahamas island of Inagua to find out if an unexplained spate of bird deaths was linked to a deadly bird flu virus that is spreading around the globe. Over the past two days, 15 of the island's famed flamingos, five roseate spoonbills and one cormorant have been found dead with no external injuries on the island just north of Haiti, officials said. Scientists from the Bahamas Ministry of Agriculture and the Department of Environmental Health will gather samples from the birds and then submit them for laboratory analysis. "Anything is possible in nature. You have birds that fly around the world," said Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources Leslie Miller, declining to rule out the H5N1 bird flu strain that has killed at least 93 people and spread to 20 new countries in the past month alone. "But let's hope to God that that is not the case here in the Bahamas," Miller said. The H5N1 virus is endemic in birds across parts of Asia but has since spread to Europe and Africa. Experts fear it could mutate into a form more easily passed between humans and trigger a pandemic in which millions could die. Bahamas National Trust president Glenn Bannister said he had never known such a large number of bird deaths in the Bahamas at one time. "This is a very large number of birds to be found dead at Inagua. This is highly unusual," he said. Inagua is the second largest breeding ground for flamingos outside of Africa. Although the three species affected on the island are not migratory birds, Bannister said they come into contact with geese and ducks that migrate to Inagua during the winter. "Migrating birds are in Inagua all the time," he said. "Every winter they mix right in with the other birds in the ponds. If this is West Nile or bird flu, it will not be good for our bird population." Inagua is the southernmost island of the Bahamas chain, lying about 60 miles (100 km) from the northern coast of Haiti. It is a large sparsely populated island known primarily for sea salt production |

The Bahamas are dead center on a migratory route that goes from Canada to South America. This route passes very close to the U.S., and it shouldn't be more than one to two months before we finally recognize BF here (probably already here, but not discovered yet).

Joe has a really good point and I want to expand it a bit...all those ships going back and forth and all that bird poop on the decks..and sailor gets flu and touches said poop and then comes home to love ones for a bit...amazing how one sentence can make you understand how many mores ways this could explode...

I found her outside my bedroom window recently, guess it's NewCastle's, public health wasn't interested. First time in 20-years, also the warmest winter in 20-years, lots of bird feeders around. Go figure! |

Yeah, that's quite disturbing. How did you dispose of the
corpse? What did the health department say exactly, if you don't
mind?

They said I would have to find a lab and pay for the PCR
analysis myself. They were only interested in West Nile Virus and not until the Spring. The first-world imitates the third-world. In light of recent events and prouncements, I felt there was nothing further to be accomplished and that I could use my time and money better by preparing for what might happen in within 18-months, according the the world's leading virologists. I have her double-bagged on ice in the garage. I'll give her a decent burial, once the ground thaws. |

What a pack of fools. You'd probably have better luck getting it tested if you were
in the 3rd world. It just boggles the mind that some are taking
this so lightly. Great way to encourage civic responsibility as
well.

I hate to mess up your humor but I have an intersting thought. I am a big fan of hummingbirds and track their migrations religously every year on a map (hummingbird migrations) and usually by this time of year they are half way up the gulf coast states (Alabama, Mississippi) Just checked my map and not ONE bird sited as of this dated. The web site owner cannot explain this. I think I can.............They are comming from south america. An area that has been very quiet on the avian flu front. Please I would like to hear your opinions

Oh dear. Are there any reports where they were last seen? Have any been
reported in South America or do birdwatchers even track them there? Have there been any storms which could have gotten them off course? This is worrisome. |

carmannurse We have humming birds every year in front of our living room window. Too early where I live to see them (North of Birmingham, AL). I will let you know if I start to see them late March, early April. There are some posters from South AL on this board that might could offer a sighting. They could be here - it's just that I don't have flowers yet and that is when they start to show up to a point that I see them. |

Given the state of southern Alabama & Mississippi after the long hurricane
season, it's possible that the habitat is not available at this time for the hummingbirds. Give it a few more weeks and see if they are sighted further inland where the devistation from the storms wasn't so bad and they have habitat to "hang-out" in. |
