Hand, foot, and mouth disease on the risePrimary Children's Hospital tracking summertime illnessesPosted: Jul 11, 2018 09:59 PM MDT Updated: Jul 11, 2018 10:04 PM MDT SALT LAKE CITY (News4Utah) -- Pediatricians are seeing a higher
number of hand, foot and mouth disease than normal in the Salt Lake
Valley. We can all do a better job at preventing the spread of the
disease by hand washing.
It's usually seen in children under 5 years old, but it can happen in older children and adults. "It's usually worse for the children but occasionally there is a strain that can make you miserable," said Dr. Per Gesteland, U of U School of Medicine, Primary Children's Hospital. Hand foot and mouth disease is contagious and very common in daycares. Primary Children's Hospital says other illnesses they're watching are gastrointestinal illnesses often spread at picnics or parties and they're also seeing several respiratory viruses going around, which are seen normally in the winter.
