Sorry the link is in Swedish (Josh might be able to work out most of what it says) https://svenska.yle.fi/artikel/2020/12/29/ny-statistik-visar-ryssland-har-tre-ganger-fler-coronadodsfall-an-regeringen

The Official Corvid-18 deaths for Russia are about 55 000.

The Official Statistics Bureau (Rosstat) estimates that from January to November there have been an excess of 230 000 deaths of which they believe 81% are a result of Corvid-19.  So they estimate the death toll as being 186 000 (over three times the rate of the Official totals)  This would put the country at a per capita death rate of around 1 280, ie a bit higher that that of the UK or the USA.

According to stats from Worldometers (when I last looked at population growth rates) Russia has an annual increase in population of 62 000.  So it looks like Russia is joining most of Eastern Europe in seeing a declining population (albeit at a too small a rate to effect its role as a regional power).

The immediate risk for Russia is that their main holiday starts with the New Year celebrations, and the Russian Orthodox Christmas is soon after, so there will be ten days of shopping and mingling.

Russia admits its death toll is three times higher

More than 80% of the excess deaths in Russia this year are linked to the coronavirus pandemic, Deputy Prime Minister Tatiana Golikova has said.

According to the Rosstat statistics agency, there were almost 230,000 additional deaths between January and November this year compared to 2019 - which would give Russia a total coronavirus death toll of more than 186,000.

The revised total is more than three times higher than the estimated 55,000 fatalities previously acknowledged by Russian authorities.

Only two other countries - the US and Brazil - have reported a higher number of deaths in the pandemic.

Russia has developed its own vaccine, the Sputnik V, which it has already begun rolling out.

I always think that most governments are not telling the truth if figures are bad.......

There are  statistics  and statistics.......

He calculates that the current toll is pushing 450,000 - a giant leap from the 94,267 deaths published online on Friday by Russia's Covid headquarters. Even that lower number is rarely cited by officials, though.
"In Covid, you choose between the economy and people's lives - mostly older people's lives," is how Alexei sees the government's rationale. We met in a coffee bar - there's been no lockdown here since Spring.
"The Russian state chose the economy. They won't say it, but it's obvious."

DJ link https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-56454701 or https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-56454701 oficial number of Russian Covid deaths is under 100,000 due to a very strict definition. Excess deaths includes also people dying from other causes-that may have survived if there was not a pandemic.

Worldwide the official number of Covid deaths is over 2,7 million-the real number of pandemic deaths may be at least double that number with variants very likely to increase further excess deaths.
