If the SARS-CoV-2 group originated in Southeast Asia, it could explain why humans in Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam appear to be much less affected.

In November and December 2010, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and Cambodian authorities invited researchers from the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris to explore several sites in northern Cambodia. The goal was to study the biodiversity of bats near the Temple of Preah Vihear, and a large number of bats species were caught during this survey, including eight types of horseshoe bat (genus Rhinolophus).

They are of great interest for virologists, as they are the reservoir of all Sarbecoviruses, the group of coronaviruses that includes SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2, respectively responsible for the SARS epidemic in 2002-2004 and the current Covid-19 pandemic.

In 2020, 10 years after the expedition, the samples stored in a freezer at -80°C were taken out and tested by the Institut Pasteur of Cambodia to look for Sarbecoviruses.

A PCR test showed two positive results and a full sequencing of their genome started. Two variants of a virus close to SARS-CoV-2 were discovered in two bats of the species Rhinolophus shameli we captured in 2010 in a cave in the province of Steung Treng.

The Covid-19 crisis taught the world that keeping immense numbers of small carnivores in captivity is a major health risk: viruses can spread and evolve rapidly in breeding facilities, potentially producing more contaminating or more dangerous variants. As pangolins and small carnivore species were frequently stored and sold together in wet markets, a “snowballing effect” due to interspecies viral transmission could be the last step in starting the human Covid-19 pandemic.

DJ While the west goes for insults on the WHO team of expert scientists visiting China more and more evidence shows up that west did ignore warnings for SARS-like virusses !

In the latest research, a team lead by Lin-Fa Wang of the University of Singapore detected a close relative of Sars-CoV-2 in horseshoe bats kept in an artificial cave at a wildlife sanctuary in Thailand.

The virus, named RacCS203, is a close match to the genetic code of Sars-CoV-2 (with 91.5% similarity in their genomes).

It is also closely related to another coronavirus - called RmYN02 - which is found in bats in Yunnan, China (with 93.6% similarity to the genome of Sars-CoV-2).

"We need to do more surveillance in animals," said Prof Wang. "In order to find the true origin, the surveillance work needs to go beyond the border of China."

DJ-Is it western arrogance or stupidity that makes the west ignore non-western findings ?

DJ-In western non-sense absurdism the WHO is "run by China" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_Van_Kerkhove or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_Van_Kerkhove even with the leading WHO official on infectious disease is from New York-USA...

Not only did SARS-2/CoViD19 get all the chance to spread around the globe (virusses fly for free) because western countries wanted to "save the economy" it now turns out the virus-very close to SARS-2/CoViD-19 has been around in SE Asia for decades..

China did publish reports early on in early 2020-but "since it came from China" it was ignored by the west. Still it did not stop that "west" blaming China for not being open...

DJ-When I look at the facts-on this pandemic-China, New Zealand, Australia are doing good-the "west"keeps repeating stupidity "saving the economy" causing more variants...Vaccine nationalism means rich counties buy up to ten times their population number of vaccines...while "countries we keep poor" hardly even have testing...

If China, Russia, Iran/Cuba then moves into those countries the "west"worries about the geo-political agenda...While the "west" seems to prefer to let the "pandemic go for herd immunity" in Africa, Latin America (and in that way killing tens of millions...).

DJ-It is high time there "are some changes" is how the west is acting...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

The title is misleading. Sars Cov 2 has not been circulating for decades in SE Asia. And 91.5% similarity is not "closely related". Is it so close that the strains being discussed have the furin cleavage binding site? The four protein strands that are homologous to HIV that just "happen" to vastly increase the binding affinity to human cells?

AndyPOW-you are 100% correct the earlier finds are not the same that caused CoViD19...Still the Yunnan 2012 SARS-2 like outbreak was related to bats. https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fpubh.2020.581569/full or https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fpubh.2020.581569/full ; With the COVID-19 pandemic reaching its worst heights, people are interested in the origin of SARS-CoV-2. This study started with two important questions: first, were there any similar atypical pneumonia outbreaks, even on a smaller level, reported between SARS in 2004 and COVID-19 in 2019/20 in China. Second, examining the beta-coronavirus most closely related to date with SARS-CoV-2 at the genome sequence level, strain RaTG13 (CoV4991), which was sampled from a horseshoe bat in Yunnan province, we asked where exactly did it come from. It was found that RaTG13/CoV4991 was collected from Tongguan mineshaft in Mojiang, Yunnan, China, in 2013. Surprisingly, the same mineshaft was also associated with a severe pneumonia-like illness in miners in 2012 killing three of the six miners.

The thesis concluded that a SARS-like CoV originating from Chinese horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus) was the predicted causative agent. The cases were remotely monitored by a prominent pulmonologist in China. Retrospective analysis of the pneumonia cases shows striking similarities with COVID-19. Bilateral pneumonia, vascular complications like pulmonary thromboembolism, and secondary infections are the main similarities. The treatment regimes were similar to the current treatments for COVID-19. We propose that the Mojiang mineshaft miners' illness could provide important clues to the origin of SARS-CoV-2. These cases should be studied by various academicians, researchers, and medical professionals as many important questions are raised in this context.
