VVD leader and departing Prime Minister Mark Rutte just barely survived a parliamentary debate on leaked notes from the cabinet formation process. He left the Tweede Kamer during the early hours of Good Friday morning with political trust in him severely damaged, but still in his position as Prime Minister. For the first time, whether Rutte can form a fourth cabinet really seems uncertain, NU.nl reports.

The parliamentary debate revolved around the cabinet formation, which was suddenly halted last Wednesday when pathfinder Kasja Ollongren, tasked with mapping out possibilities to form a coalition government, found out she had tested positive for coronavirus. As she rushed out carrying her notes under her arm,  journalists took photos which later revealed one of the notes stating ‘position Omtzigt, function elsewhere’. This referred to the CDA MP Pieter Omtzigt who played a key role in exposing the tax fraud which brought down Rutte’s last cabinet.

DJ-First protests at noon in The Hague..."Our" PM does get away with lying to the house of representatives about an MP who worked for years to stop Dutch tax"service" racism. "Our"PM wanted that MP "out of parliament"...

Also "pathfinders" rushing out after testing positive-to an official car-after wich also the driver needed testing...Cabinet members getting tested-and testresults-faster then anyone else in NL...

We are in wave three of this-endless-pandemic. Vaccinations are a disaster...

There are several "social explosives" in NL. From racism to increase of poverty by the main party making NL a major taxhaven...

For young people finding a house they can afford is as good as impossible. "Liberal policies" did make study more expensive, due to corona small jobs are difficult. (Restaurants and small shops closed-supermarkets often only want 16-18 y/o). The "liberals" (lack of) policy on enviroment, traffic is frustrating any climate deal...

We had elections march 17-with a "swing to the right" but maybe it should be seen as protest against the main parties run by an elite without contact with the population...See also https://www.rt.com/news/519908-dutch-parliament-rebuke-rutte/ or https://www.rt.com/news/519908-dutch-parliament-rebuke-rutte/

DJ,

https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2021/04/christenunie-rules-out-a-new-coalition-with-rutte-as-prime-minister/ or https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2021/04/christenunie-rules-out-a-new-coalition-with-rutte-as-prime-minister/  ;ChristenUnie leader Gert-Jan Segers says in an interview with the Nederlands Dagblad that a new Rutte-led cabinet would not be able to ensure a change in the political culture in ‘any credible way’. ‘Too much has happened’ under Rutte to take part in a new cabinet led by him, Segers said.

ChristenUnie, he said, could not be part of a political culture in which elections are treated as ‘irritating interruptions’. The decision, he said, is about Rutte as the embodiment of the political culture of the past 10 years. ‘It would not be credible if the man responsible for that culture leads the cabinet which is supposed to change it.’

and

https://nltimes.nl/2021/04/02/omtzigt-note-pm-ruttes-first-slip-memory or https://nltimes.nl/2021/04/02/omtzigt-note-pm-ruttes-first-slip-memory ; On Thursday, VVD leader and departing Prime Minister Mark Rutte faced formal censure in parliament over a note from the cabinet formation process that mentioned critical CDA parliamentarian Pieter Omtzigt and the words "function elsewhere". Rutte said on camera that he did not discuss Omtzigt with the formation pathfinders, but notes from that conversation showed that he did indeed. Rutte claimed not to remember making the statement that something had to be done with Omtzigt, "make him a Minister". This is not the first time the Prime Minister had politically sensitive information slip his mind. Here follows a summary of such previous slips compiled by ANP.(Some examples of in fact lies of the PM to parliament)

After the around 13 hour long parliamentary debate on the Omtzigt note, which ended during the early hours of Good Friday morning, Rutte said that he did not consider resignation for a second. He said that he was going to do his "stinking best" and work very hard to regain the trust of parliament and society.

Ayfer Kock, leader of the Enschede faction of the CDA and Omtzigt's wife, was annoyed by this statement. "It's getting worse and more stupid that arrogance of power," she said to ANP on Friday. "Surely this Prime Minister will never be able to restore confidence in the rule of law? This time calls for servant leadership. We are facing major problems that must be tackled structurally and decisively. We have to be done with putting out fires, hiding mistakes, lying, withholding important information from parliament, thwarting MPs, and working on image."

DJ-The PM-Mark(et) Rutte has become a problem. He now only has the support of his own party.

Two basic scenarios;

1 Trying to form a new government

2 New elections

The pandemic worsens other problems and this political crisis worsens the pandemic.

The conservative government with Rutte as PM most was supported by over 40 y/o that do have a house, job, savings...often more suburban...The more social liberal party did win a lot of votes from younger age groups and in most of the larger cities. Christian parties did have backing in rural area's-but the christian democrats admit "their voters are close to the graveyard", traditional voters...

After last election a record number of 17 parties are in parliament with 150 seats...Even without rutte the liberal conservatives-the largest party with 35 seats-has become unacceptable for most other parties...A lot of those parties may think another election-after "showing they did there best getting a government" may bring in more seats...

DJ-Politics did become a hot issue now. Just before the elections march 17 Rutte as PM was supported by 54% of the voters-that now did drop to 25%...with even some right wing parties being fed up...

My view-the explosive load may be in many problems only getting worse during the "smiling trump-rutte 10 years"...The housing crisis is a big issue-with our government going for even stricter laws against squating. (Breaking in an empty building to live there-a very major issue 40 years ago-very limited now. Mayors warned against that law because it is further imbalancing the situation. Most new houses in NL end up at "investors (including "prince bernhard jr") then asking extreme rent...

Climate is another big issue. The liberal "vvd" proberbly gets finance from a.o. Shell (25% in royal family hands). The party is against laws that force them to be open on where there money is coming from "for privacy reasons"...NL is a major tax haven, for many "liberals" tax is a dirty word...

On local level municipalities now end up with the burden of social spending and care-many of them face banktruptcy...Even more left wing cities are forced to follow right wing national rules. A lot of the job ends up at "regions"...city councels-often their members over 50 or even older-do not understand it any longer. Hardly know how to handle a smart phone...

Arnhem region has 450,000 people but is spread over 10 municipalities...(part of an even larger region with 1 million people...)

Politics has become endless talking in one room to find out a decision was already made elsewhere...From Brussel/EU to "a region" -often decisions are made by people that hardly understand the problem...

DJ-This Dutch crisis is not only playing in NL-many countries face the same sort of crisis...Proberbly politics NOT stopping this pandemic is making the mix explosive...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

Prime Minister Mark Rutte lied and cheated. But politics and the public act as if nothing has happened.

By Thomas Kirchner

As a reminder: by chance it emerged that the incumbent Prime Minister Mark Rutte had tried to get the uncomfortable Christian Democrat Pieter Omtzigt out of the way in the course of the talks on the formation of a new government. Rutte denied this for a week, but was finally convicted by documents. Instead of admitting the lie, however, he excused himself with his "false memory". At the same time, he denied having any motive for Omtzigt's cold-weathering - although it is undisputedly his most dangerous critic, an upright representative of the people who is preparing not only to clear up Rutte's blatant failure in the affair to clarify childcare allowance wrongly demanded by the state ,

Even the most important coalition partners only ask for some remorse

And how do you react in The Hague? Not only its own party is unanimous behind Rutte, who has been in office for almost eleven years and to whom almost everyone owes their posts. Even the most important previous coalition partners, left-wing liberals and Christian Democrats, are not demanding the resignation of the legendary, flexible Prime Minister, who has often been caught lying, but only a little remorse. Swam over it, it is a crisis, the country has to be governed. Realistically speaking, without Rutte it would not be possible at all to form a government, they say. And is there not a risk of months of political chaos without him, from which only extremists like Geert Wilders can benefit? Even the Greens keep the door ajar for Rutte, they don't want to block all power options.

DJ-While hospitals are in crisis politics want to reopen-Germany going for three week lockdown. NL ruled by "trump whit a smile"

Sympathies!

Stuck with another Trump is the very definition of national horror!  To be so during a pandemic is even more terrible.

The namesake has delivered the USA the highest national death toll so far (although Mexico and Brazil are vieing for the top spot).  Not an accolade you want.

How do you tell if a politician is lying?
His lips or pen are moving.

Pierre Niessen, the former tax officer, had been alerting the government for years about wrongdoings in the distribution of childcare subsidies. He tried to warn the government that tax authorities were unjustly demanding a refund from 40 thousand people. His warnings fell on deaf ears and that was unacceptable the state secretary says, according to ANP.

“That was not good. His reports should have been looked at more in-depth”, Van Huffelen says. “I told him in our discussion that I am very grateful to him for raising his concerns persistently."

An external investigation by the consultancy, KPMG, has shown that Niessen was “completely right’ in five out of six of his reports says. The KPMG confirmed, for example, that a former manager at the tax authorities decided not to deal with objection in accordance with formal procedures. He dismissed them instead as requests for information.

The State Secretary is allocating 750 million euros for the cancellation of the victims’ public debt. It is unclear if the funds will be enough to cover the debt that victims amassed during the time they unjustly did not receive childcare allowance.

DJ-That part of the scandall did involve over 40,000 households-several thousends did flee from NL to escape tax-created debts...But it is just the top of an iceberg of government of the road...

DJ The "government" "leaked" opening plans-shops, restaurants would reopen...eventhough numbers indicated there was no room for that. (On purpose) Misinterpetation of good friday/easter lower numbers was the basis for reopening plans. Now mayors have to translate NOT reopening to the public....It is a pattern in NL that the national government dump problems to the local level-without enough money...lots of city councils finding it harder to find potential members (further eroding democracy...)

We have most the UK variant in NL but the SA and P1 variant may be increasing...Germany (more or less) did already close their border with NL. A big problem since it was an "open border" often with places on both sides of the border-the border may be in the middle of the street...

https://nltimes.nl/2021/04/12/netherlands-criticized-inhumane-treatment-immigrants-asylums-seekers or https://nltimes.nl/2021/04/12/netherlands-criticized-inhumane-treatment-immigrants-asylums-seekers

Scientists from the Radboud University in Nijmegen determined that the strict interpretation of immigration rules by the Immigration and Naturalisation Services (IND) has often caused unfair treatment of immigrants and asylum seekers, the Trouw reported. The SCP, which provides socio-cultural policy advice based on scientific research argued that shortening the waiting period asylum seekers face in obtaining a decision, the more likely they are to quickly integrate into Dutch society.

There have been instances when people with a temporary residence permit are wrongly labeled as fraudsters. As a result, they have to repay all benefits received. In a worst-case scenario, they lose their residence permit and had to leave the country.

-

The researchers also showed that in recent years, Parliament has approved legislation that eroded the legal position of migrants and refugees. One example is that asylum seekers are no longer entitled to a free legal assistance during their first interview with the IND. Immigration lawyers are also drawing attention to this issue. They compiled the book 'Unheard, Injustice in Immigration Law' with fifty examples of injustice towards migrants from their practice. The book will be presented to Parliament on Monday.

-

The organization also argued that newcomers who experience fair treatment during the asylum and family reunification procedures are more likely to later identify strongly as Dutch citizens and have greater confidence in Dutch institutions later on.

https://nltimes.nl/2021/04/12/doctors-air-pollution-major-problem-children-urgent-issue-next-cabinet or https://nltimes.nl/2021/04/12/doctors-air-pollution-major-problem-children-urgent-issue-next-cabinet ;The new Cabinet must pay more attention to the issue of air pollution, particularly as low air quality is especially problematic for children. This urgent appeal was made by the lung health organizations Longfonds and Long Alliantie Nederland, as well as dozens of doctors and scientists.

-

In 1 in 5 Dutch children, the development of this disease is related to nitrogen dioxide. Additionally, recent research shows that the lungs of children do not grow as well when they breathe more polluted air. By the age of sixteen, they have a lower lung function than children who grow up in relatively cleaner air, according to the coalition.

At least 12,000 people die prematurely each year from particulate matter or nitrogen dioxide according to the Longfonds.

DJ-In many ways the Dutch government signs all kind of international agreements only to break them...but on paper it looks okay...Legel steps can be ignored...

https://www.containmentnu.nl/articles/uncertainty-on-strategy?lang=en orhttps://www.containmentnu.nl/articles/uncertainty-on-strategy?lang=en ;

Summary

The Netherlands does not have a clear Corona policy. That is bad enough as it is. What is worse: there is little evidence that the Netherlands has any desire to get rid of the virus. Our analysis shows that all actors behave and express themselves in a contradictory fashion. Although the Outbreak Management Team recently defined the policy of "maximum control" as "suppressing" the spread "as much as possible" to "(almost) zero", the RIVM institute defines the same concept as merely slowing the epidemic down. And the same OMT is now OK with a rising number of infections. That's not suppression.

Our best guess is that, at the moment, RIVM and GGD-GHOR are still aiming for a controlled spread of the virus and the gradual build-up of immunity, and the OMT is going along with this for now, despite the fact that since 23 June it has paid lip service to the concept of "suppression", and the media and the cabinet do not grasp the difference between "some virus circulation" and "no virus circulation".

In a situation where one has a diffuse, multiplicitous strategy, however, the strategy that suppresses the virus least "wins". Therefore, our major discrepancies in the Corona strategy are in dire need of clarification.

DJ-"Vision" is a dirty word for the present "liberal conservative government". They show themselves to be masters in creating chaos from responsibilities to vaccinations...it is getting more and more unclear what to expect, who has to do what...

Still this "government" did get reelected....march 17...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

The national public health agency RIVM reported 8,600 new cases of SARS-CoV-2 on Sunday, as the seven-day rolling average continues to rise. On Sunday, that counter was on 7,679 new daily cases on average, the highest since January 9. The total number of Covid-19 patients in hospitals, both in the clinic and in intensive care, also rose. These numbers were reported while the cabinet is deciding whether to go ahead with the planned 'roadmap' out of lockdown.

Sunday's single-day tally was a three percent increase compared to the previous day and a four percent increase versus last week. The cumulative number of infections for the previous calendar week was 53,756, a ten percent rise versus last week.

ICU cases continue to rise

The total number of patients being treated for Covid-19 in Dutch hospitals increased again. On Sunday, the patient coordination center LCPS reported a total of 2,478 hospitalizations, a net increase of 50 patients versus Saturday. Following the current trend, there will be around 2,442 Covid-19 hospitalizations next week.

DJ-So Dutch "government" thinks good time for reopening...https://nltimes.nl/2021/04/18/cabinet-slightly-positive-relaxing-lockdown-april-28-reports or https://nltimes.nl/2021/04/18/cabinet-slightly-positive-relaxing-lockdown-april-28-reports

NL must have at least 95 P1 cases-number going up, 381 SA variant cases-supposed to be slowed down/stopped further increase by the dominant UK variant...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variants_of_SARS-CoV-2#Lineage_B.1.617 or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variants_of_SARS-CoV-2#Lineage_B.1.617 most likely also spreading...I would not be surprised if the P3 variant etc. would be here..."our" "government" even thinking of reopening is insanity...

https://www.rivm.nl/en/news/one-in-ten-tests-positive or https://www.rivm.nl/en/news/one-in-ten-tests-positive

In the past week, from 14 to 20 April, the reported number of people who tested positive for COVID-19 increased by 5.3%, rising to 53,981 newly reported infections. The percentage of people who tested positive in that week rose from 9.6% to 10.1%. With the exception of a dip due to the Easter weekend, the reported number of people who tested positive for COVID-19 in the Netherlands has risen almost every week since January. The reproduction number is completely above 1.

Fewer new hospital admissions related to COVID-19 were reported by hospitals. These figures are under-reported as a result of a technical malfunction earlier in the week. The number of reported new ICU admissions decreased slightly.*

Hospital admissions and ICU admissions

1,542 new COVID-19 hospital admissions were reported in the past week, which is under-reporting the situation compared to the actual figures. Due to a technical malfunction earlier in the week, hospitals have not yet reported all admissions to nursing wards. The actual number of hospital admissions will be announced later this week, once all the figures for the past week have been reported.  The number of new ICU admissions dropped slightly to 379, compared to 389 in the week before.*

Now that more and more elderly and vulnerable people have been vaccinated, there has been a relative increase in people from younger age groups hospitalised with COVID-19. GPs now also have more options for treating patients at home by providing resources such as supplementary oxygen and anti-inflammatory medication that could previously only be administered in hospital. As a result of this partnership between hospitals and GP practices, more people are being treated at home who would previously have been admitted to hospital.

The pressure that the coronavirus epidemic is placing on hospitals, Municipal Public Health Services (GGDs) and other care providers, such as general practitioners, remains as high as before.

Still a criminal "government" going against ALL advice https://nltimes.nl/2021/04/20/netherlands-ends-curfew-opens-cafe-terraces-amid-high-covid-19-patient-totals or https://nltimes.nl/2021/04/20/netherlands-ends-curfew-opens-cafe-terraces-amid-high-covid-19-patient-totals

So cases will go up again, since the R0 was already above 1 (at 1,06), HCW-ers did already work 12 hrs shifts, extra hours, ICU capacity is overstretched "reopening now" in my opinion is a criminal act.

The liberal conservative government failed to stop this pandemic, went for herd immunity from the start...May they see prison cells soon !

A large majority of people in the Netherlands cannot understand why Mark Rutte is still the country’s Prime Minister, Hart van Nederland reported. The broadcaster conducted a survey of over three thousand people, and found that 60 percent think he should have left office after the Cabinet formation scandal at the beginning of April.

On April 1, Rutte narrowly won a no-confidence vote following a parliamentary debate on leaked notes from the Cabinet formation process that suggested he had conversations with Cabinet formation scouts about popular CDA MP Pieter Omtzigt. He then said he did not remember having that conversation, which few parliamentarians believed as more notes surfaced about the discussions. Rutte remained the Prime Minister but his image was damaged; a majority in Parliament voted in favor of censuring him for misleading them. Though he and his VVD party were the clear winners in the recent elections, the scandal has undoubtedly made it more difficult for him to lead a fourth cabinet.

DJ-With more scandals showing up-only in part with the PM as the problem-the "political elite" as the problem a new government is becoming harder...https://nltimes.nl/2021/04/22/rutte-cabinet-accused-withholding-tax-scandal-info-parliament-pm-denies-anything or https://nltimes.nl/2021/04/22/rutte-cabinet-accused-withholding-tax-scandal-info-parliament-pm-denies-anything ;

The years-long scandal dates back to the previous Rutte Cabinet in addition to the Rutte III Cabinet which fell as the result of a government investigation into the matter. The scandal saw thousands of parents unjustly accused of attempting to defraud the government out of social benefits payments based on their background and profile, and not on an individual review of material. They were often stripped of child care subsidies available to anyone in the Netherlands, and forced to repay benefits they received in one lump sum pushing many into deep debt.

RTL Nieuws alleged that the meeting records showed that ministers were particularly irritated by CDA MP Pieter Omtzigt, who was instrumental in bringing the tax benefits scandal to light. A source told the broadcaster that current finance minister and CDA leader Wopke Hoekstra said that Omtzigt had been approached and made aware of the sensitive nature of the issue, but was unwilling to relent.

The Tweede Kamer demanded clarification from Rutte and other ministers involved and asked for a debate on the matter as soon as possible. The issues put even more pressure on the already fragile trust between the parties in the midst of a difficult Cabinet formation process following the March election.

It was reported that a number of parties also approached new Cabinet formation advisor Herman Tjeenk Willink regarding this issue. While Rutte led his VVD party to victory in the March vote, many parties have already said they would not work with the VVD in a coalition government if Rutte remained their leader.

DJ-"Our government" believes MP's "have to accept without any questions what government decides"...This problem is not only a Dutch problem..."Our government" also "failed" to report GGD-general healthcare "crashed" in the beginning of this pandemic in testing capacity...Another issue is sending troops to Afghanistan yesterday while parliament has to aprove that decission today "because a flight was available yesterday"...

DJ-"Our government" still basicly sticks to "herd immunity strategy" reopening when the R0 is under 1...now even reopening with an R0 above 1, variants spreading, hospitals in crisis...There may be an increased demand for new elections-but the outcome could be a return to the same political problems...

Dutch journalist Peter R. de Vries died on Thursday in a hospital from injuries sustained in an assassination attempt on July 6. The crime reporter was shot on Lange Leidsedwarsstraat in Amsterdam after appearing on RTL Boulevard, which broadcasts from a studio on Leidseplein.

"Peter fought to the end, but was unable to win the battle. He died surrounded by the people who love him," his family said in a statement released by RTL Nieuws. "Peter has lived by his conviction, 'On bended knee is no way to be free'. We are immensely proud of him and at the same time inconsolable."

DJ-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narco-state or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narco-state ; Narco-state (also narco-capitalism or narco-economy[a]) is a political and economic term applied to countries where all legitimate institutions become penetrated by the power and wealth of the illegal drug trade.[2] The term was first used to describe Bolivia following the 1980 coup of Luis García Meza which was seen to be primarily financed with the help of narcotics traffickers.[3] Other well-known examples are MexicoColombia, and Guinea-Bissau, where drug cartels produce, ship and sell drugs such as cocaine and marijuana.

-

It has been argued that narco-states can be divided into five categories depending on their level of dependence on the narcotics trade and the threat the narcotics trade in said country poses to domestic and international stability. These five categories are (in ascending order): incipient, developing, serious, critical, and advanced.[13]

However, recent use of the term narco-state has been questioned by some for being too widely and uncritically applied, particularly following the widespread media attention given to Guinea-Bissau as "the world's first narco-state" in 2008,[14] and should instead refer only to those countries in which the narcotics trade is state-sponsored and constitutes the majority of a country's overall GDP.

NL ruling political parties deny problems...Drug-trade may NOT be a big part of the GDP-yet !

Spending cuts on all public issues-by our right wing governments-also mean police running behind the facts...Small criminals develop to big gangsters...

Two of the major banks did get fined for dealing with large amounts of criminal money.  The "liberal" vvd-party has a lot of representatives with criminal links...if it was a "motorclub" it would end by court-order. But it is our "major" political party...

Hamer called it "very worrying" that it was impossible to achieve a breakthrough for a majority coalition among these parties.  Previously these parties in the broad center "ensured that compromises could be made in order to realize solutions", whether from the coalition or opposition, Hamer said.

"Our parliamentary culture always consisted of parties' willingness to start negotiations, sometimes very reluctantly," Hamer said. The fact that this willingness was not there in this formation process will damage citizens' confidence in politics, she believes. According to her, "new workable relationships" need to emerge quickly, and the VVD should take the lead in that as the largest party.

"During the conversations, a lot of time was also spent on what was said about each other in the media," Hamer said. This is not new, but "given the discussion about an open management culture", it would be good to pay attention to this in the next round of formation discussions.

DJ Municipalities face increasing problems from housing to infrastructure since the central government more and more is unable to govern. Several ministers etc allready did find other jobs...There may be an increase demand by voters for new elections but that may not solve the problem...

Pandemic related violence/conflicts remained limited-only one right wing party tried-unsuccesfull so far-to get votes by claiming "the pandemic (and climate change etc.) are fake"...Also-in general-the NL economy is booming with more jobs then people able to do those jobs...The real number of Covid deaths must be 33,000+ based on excess deaths statistics.

The police in Rotterdam fired multiple warning shots during riots on the Coolsingel, a main road in the center of the city. “There are injuries related to the gunshots fired,” police confirmed.

Today there are other demonstrations in other cities (Breda, Amsterdam). That may become "ugly" also ...(both cities have football hooligans).

With over 20.000 + new cases per day, hospitals running out of capacity , the last thing we need is major riots...

However these riots are the outcome of a government not doing a decent job....Lifting restrictions over and over again much to early...making this pandemic getting worse.

At present the NL government is not supported by most...in a latest poll only 30% of those asked supported government strategy to limit this pandemic...Most did think government was slow in putting restrictions-fast in lifting them...

Politics all condemn  the riots...but that does not offer a strategy...

We may see a "busy weekend" here in NL....but not in a good way !

DJ,

A few NL news items; https://nltimes.nl/2021/11/21/three-people-wounded-gunshots-rotterdam-riots or https://nltimes.nl/2021/11/21/three-people-wounded-gunshots-rotterdam-riots

Police reported Saturday evening that during the riots Friday evening in Rotterdam, three rioters sustained bullets wounds. The injured are being treated in hospital.

In Dutch media they mention police shooting into a crowd in 2009, 1999...but both cases were NOT demonstrations (going wrong)...(In 2009 Hook-of-Holland-Rotterdam area under cover police was attacked during a beach party, in 1999 also in Rotterdam football hooligans did get " out of control").

So all 3 incidents were in Rotterdam-area, in fact all three also-at least in part-related to football/soccer hooligans.

Firing into a demonstration is very, very unusual in NL....https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/the-pandemic-discussion-forum/892756-discussion-thread-vi-covid-19-new-coronavirus?view=stream or https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/the-pandemic-discussion-forum/892756-discussion-thread-vi-covid-19-new-coronavirus?view=stream latest; Protests about COVID measures getting violent in the Netherlands, or have been hijacked by people with their own agendas, as happens here. Police seem to be using bullets in response and some are wounded. It is alleged that some are being targeted wrongly, as happened here in the US during the Occupy Wall street protests.

DJ Some remarks on police strategy;

-They expected to be dealing with a small group of peacefull demonstrators max 100 people at 7 p.m.

-But group turned violent and much larger (around 1,000 people estimate) an hour later...using fireworks, stones etc...part of police not in riot-gear...simply not expecting a riot...

Most ant-CoViD demonstrations remain peacefull-sometimes turning into a riot when demonstrators block roads or try to move into no-go zones ....

-Police strategy was to use police vans trying to disperse the crowd-may have caused escalation...

-At 10 p.m. police was 400 (wo)man strong in riot gear, watercanons etc...

-One point for improvement could be in communications and monitoring...it may have taken to much time before police HQ recognized this demonstration was going very violent.

-Another aspect now is claims by limited groups that 1 or more demonstrators did get killed by police gun-fire...most likely that claim is incorrect.

https://nltimes.nl/2021/11/21/riots-erupt-multiple-cities-dozens-arrests or https://nltimes.nl/2021/11/21/riots-erupt-multiple-cities-dozens-arrests There was limited unrest yesterday.

Police in NL may be even more overstretched the healthcare...

Political choices to "open borders" without essential agreement on some basics does mean fireworks get imported from Poland, fire arms from SE European EU members...

Politics not willing to control banking has resulted in the two largest NL banks getting fines for white-wash of criminal money-while also getting government support because they are "to big to fail"...NL as main entry port for drugtrade turned NL into a narcostate.

Just like in this pandemic NL politics "living in a bubble" without much contact with reality...

On the protests itself, I share the feelings of frustration but throwing stones at police(wo)men does not help !

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

CRS,DrPH, Our MP is an allways-allmost-smiling ever-looking-like-a-student type...Riding a bicycle in The Hague...background of his family in the former Dutch East Indies...So for that matter not trump-like at all...

But in political views, way of governing, i see a lot more in common. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Rutte or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Rutte..............

https://nltimes.nl/categories/politics or https://nltimes.nl/categories/politics , https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/category/politics/ or https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/category/politics/  may give some info...

We did have elections this march....since then getting a coalition is now taking a record amount of time...Some claim because our P.M. does not mind leading a government that can not be send home...because in a formal way-they were allready send home...

On enviroment, social rules, privacy, housing the present government-the "liberal party" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/People%27s_Party_for_Freedom_and_Democracy or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/People%27s_Party_for_Freedom_and_Democracy has been leading for over 10 years...

In basic their motto may be "the best government is no government" ....cutting back spending on all public services...We now have less capacity in NL hospitals then 10 years ago...Sort of "just in time-planned care" with some extra...but simply not enough to deal with major crises...(we have Germany for that...)...

On the other side the number of millionaires exploded...billions went to big companies (tax cuts)...still that did not stop Unilever, Shell becoming now UK companies after decades of being NL-UK...(Royal Dutch Shell  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Dutch_Shell or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Dutch_Shell  will go back to ; In November 2021, Shell announced that it is planning to relocate their headquarters to London, abandon its dual share structure, and change its name from Royal Dutch Shell plc to Shell plc.[67] )...(By the way both companies had (part of) their roots in the Dutch East Indies as well...

NL is at the crossroads of Scandinavian/French-Roman, German/Anglo-Saxon influences...You could cut up NL in four parts...put the "Holland-part" with the US/UK...the North with Scandinavia, the East with Germany and the South with Belgium/France...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

Dutch hospitals preparing for "code black" scenario

It won't be long before hospitals in the Netherlands reach "code black," in which there are not enough beds to treat everyone who needs it. In that case, doctors will have to choose who to treat. Hospitals are already facing such difficult choices, Peter Langenbach, chairman of the board of the Maasstad Hospital in Rotterdam, said to Goedenmorgen Nederland on NPO 1.

On Friday, Health Minister Hugo de Jonge said that we are still "very far away" from a code black in hospitals. But that is not the case, according to both Langenback and the association of nurses and caregivers V&VN. The number of hospitalized coronavirus patients continues to rise. At the same time, absenteeism among doctors and nurses is climbing, either because they get Covid-19 themselves or because they are burnt out after nearly two years of crisis.

V&VN is not pleased with the government's policy. "If you look at the growth in the number of infections, you see that the national measures do not go far enough to have an effect. You cannot keep healthcare standing with this weak intervention," V&VN board member Jaap Kappert said on the association's website.

Langenbach agrees with the nurses' association. "We are now ten days after the press conference and about nine days after the measures were announced, and we are still above 20,000 infections and a large number of admissions per day," he said to the radio program. According to him, the current package of measures is "insufficiently coherent, insufficiently communicated, and insufficiently strict." People also don't adhere to it. "That has to do with the fact that we are all fed up with it. The stretch is just gone in society. That can only be brought together by a coherent package of measures that is easier to explain."

Langenbach said hospitals are waiting for Minister De Jonge to declare code black because they are already facing extremely difficult choices. "Those choices are actually formalized in a code black scenario," he said. "So that criteria other than just the medical ones can be used to ultimately choose which patient gets which bed at a time. I speak to ICU nurses and intensivists who say: support us in making these difficult choices, which we already have to make.

NL government sticking to " an advice" to work from home, "a warning" follow the rules while unvaccinated children get infected at schools, cinema's restaurants are open..."vaccines stop the spread"-insanity....

Hospitals, GP's, Safety-regions may become fed up with central government not doing anything clever...The Dutch government may even bring stricter rules as a sort of punnishment for widespread unrest...making matters even worse...

Support for how the NL government deals with the crisis dropped to 30% in october (I think it was) may have now become less then 10%...

NL hospitals preparing helicopter-deks for airlifting severe cases to where there is room. One "lifeliner" helicopter (from Leeuwarden north of NL) is made ready for these kind of airlifts (also to German hospitals). The specialized crew will be from Nijmegen University hospital...

Triage training in many hospitals...Very likely hospitals keep info on staff testing positive but still needed out of the news...

I expect we will learn more on what to expect here in NL...Looking at half steps to slow maybe our "government" may keep restaurants cinema's open only for vaccinated/natural immunity or other "useless steps"...Trust in government now at 28%, the lowest so far during this pandemic...

In carecenters now close to 900 did see a CoViD infection the last 4 weeks...that is about 1-in-3, another sad record...Lots of schools did close because to many teachers/pupils did test positive...still government could decide schools have to stay open...In that case very likely lots of schools may decide for themselves to close...

In general-even the NL government is starting to realize we are moving into a crisis...It would "look bad" if society is NOT in lockdown when hospitals run out of capacity...But given the very high numbers-over 20,000 cases for 10 days now-hospital crash can not be avoided...

Even a very strict lockdown now can not stop that crisis...

DJ-In my words most likely NL government is taking two steps;

-Further limiting opening hours for shops, restaurants cinema's etc.

-Increasing booster vaccinations...

What they are NOT doing is closing schools...while most cases in NL have links to schools...children getting infected and infecting parents/family members...with in the short term NO vaccines for children under 12...

Also the idea that vaccinated people only play a limited role in the spread of the virus (against what I understand is the WHO vision...). Also hardly serious limits on travel...

https://nltimes.nl/2021/11/25/22200-covid-infections-average-falls-first-time-8-weeks or https://nltimes.nl/2021/11/25/22200-covid-infections-average-falls-first-time-8-weeks The main reason "average is going down" may be overstretching testing capacity...

One of the twitter NL experts was talking of "confabulation by the NL government"...my words, NL government living in a fantasy....With hospitals in "phase 2D" one step from "code black/phase 3" hospital capacity is close to collapse...with staff being the major problem.

We may soon see 100+ deaths per day in NL...

The reason a couple who tested positive for Covid and escaped the quarantine hotel was only arrested once they were sitting on a plane about to take off was a lack of legal ground to detain them before that. "We really did not expect that people would flee," Mayor Marianne Schuurmans of Haarlemmermeer said to Goedemorgen Nederland.

The couple had landed at Schiphol from South Africa on Friday. They tested positive for Covid-19 and were taken to a hotel in Badhoevedorp to quarantine. They fled the hotel and wanted to catch a plane to Spain. The Koninklijke Marechaussee, a policing force that works as part of the Dutch military, arrested them on that plane on Sunday.

"There is security at the hotel, but people stay there completely voluntarily," Schuurmans said on the radio program. "Security guards advised the couple not to leave, but there was no legal ground to hold them yet. As mayor and chairman of the Security Region, I still had to arrange that at the time. We really did not expect that people would flee."

DJ Even now people coming from South Africa (it only stopped in words...) do not have to take a PCR-test...it is voluntary...Also the 5,000+ passengers that came from the SA region last week are "asked if they please would like to take a test"...so far 400 did so...

DJ,

The University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) uses stricter criteria to decide whether someone will be admitted to intensive care, said Peter van der Voort, Senator and head of the ICU at the hospital, in talk show BEAU on Thursday. "A stricter selection on medical criteria is phase 3A. And from phase 3, it is code black. Technically you can say we are in it," he said.

According to Van der Voort, the hospital does not have space for all the patients who need care. "You notice that the penny drops on 'not admitting to ICU' a little earlier," he said. "There are patients that you would normally give the benefit of the doubt and then say: We're going to try it. And now you're choosing not to try anymore."

Van der Voort said that half of all Dutch ICU beds are occupied by Covid-19 patients. He criticized caretaker Health Minister Hugo de Jonge and Ernst Kuipers of the national acute care network LNAZ. "They say that we can still go to fifteen hundred beds and that until then, there is nothing to worry about. But that is not the practice; in practice, we are already stricter in selecting."

and ;https://nltimes.nl/2021/12/03/icu-nurse-shortage-will-problem-years-come or https://nltimes.nl/2021/12/03/icu-nurse-shortage-will-problem-years-come

The Netherlands faces a shortage of intensive care nurses, and that shortage will be a problem for years to come, NU.nl reports. Not enough people want to become ICU nurses. Hospitals are also at the limits of their training capacity, the newspaper found when talking to professional association V&VN, hospitals, and locking at figures from the Healthcare Training Board and Capacity Body.

The intensive care capacity is primarily determined by the available staff. And the capacity is currently under severe pressure due to the coronavirus pandemic. Health Minister Hugo de Jonge asked hospitals to scale up to 1,250 ICU beds after the hospitals made clear that the government's target of 1,350 beds was unattainable, according to newspaper Trouw.

The shortage of ICU nurses is partly because people are leaving the profession. But also because not enough ICU nurses were trained in the past years. Last year, 462 people started training to become ICU nurses in Dutch hospitals, about 300 too few, according to NU.nl. The same was true for the three prior years.

According to V&VN, the main reason for not enough ICU nurses in training is that there are insufficient general nurses. ICU training comes on top of a general nursing qualification. "Too few students register for general nursing training," Rowan Marijnissen of the V&VN said to NU.nl. "And if you consider that everyone in healthcare, from mental healthcare to ICU, is desperate for people, then you get an idea of how difficult it is."

An essential part of becoming an ICU nurse is practical training. And that is the second problem. Hospitals are at the limit of their practical training capacity. NU.nl spoke to six hospitals, and most of them said they are currently training the maximum number of ICU nurses they can handle.

Hospitals made agreements to increase the number of ICU nurses in the coming years after the coronavirus pandemic made abundantly clear how devastating such a shortage can be. Whether they will succeed remains to be seen.

DJ Staff is the main problem...not beds...Duration and HCW-ers getting infected/exhausted will further decrease staff.

DJ Code Black means ;

Health Care Capacity  is smaller then Health Care Demand leading to increase of Excess Deaths...

HCC<HCD =ED+...https://nltimes.nl/2021/12/03/excess-mortality-3500-extra-deaths-november or https://nltimes.nl/2021/12/03/excess-mortality-3500-extra-deaths-november

Partly due to the coronavirus, many more people died in November than usual. Statistics Netherlands counted about 3,500 more deaths than expected. The statisticians can only determine the cause of these deaths later. They do know that Covid-19 primarily caused increased deaths during previous coronavirus waves.

In November, Statistics Netherlands recorded excess mortality every week. That means that many more people died than is normal for the time of year. The researchers estimated this based on death rates from previous years and demographic trends. There were particularly many deaths among people aged 65 and older.

The death rate was highest last week, the last one in November. An estimated 4,100 people died, 1,100 more than expected.

All the provinces saw more deaths than usual in the past month. Relatively speaking, excess mortality was highest in Limburg. Over 50 percent more people than usual died there. Zeeland, Noord-Brabant, and Gelderland also saw high increases in mortality rates. Excess mortality was lowest in Friesland.

DJ; HCC/Heath Care Capacity will worsen further by HCW-ers decreasing further....Winter just started (meteo-winter per december 1) and Omicron is increasing ...so NL situation is getting worse high speed.

https://nltimes.nl/2021/11/30/testing-shows-omicron-coronavirus-variant-spreading-netherlands or https://nltimes.nl/2021/11/30/testing-shows-omicron-coronavirus-variant-spreading-netherlands ;

One person in the Netherlands who was determined to be infected with the Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus did not recently travel outside of the country. It is not yet clear how they acquired the infection, a spokesperson for the RIVM told Nu.nl.

The new revelation was made just as the RIVM said the spread of the coronavirus was stabilizing after new infections hit a record high. "If that trend continues, we will now reach the peak. We are seeing positive signs," said Aura Timen, head of infectious disease control at the RIVM, in an interview with ANP.

A total of 16 people in the country have been diagnosed with the variant, believed to be more contagious than the Delta variant which has been most prevalent in the Netherlands since the summer. Fourteen of those infected were on one of two KLM flights that landed at Schiphol on Friday.

The other two infections were determined from samples submitted to a laboratory in Utrecht. One of those samples was collected on November 19. The other was four days later. It was not clear where the two people reside.

The RIVM told Nu.nl that those two people do not have a direct connection to each other. One of them had traveled in a Southern Africa country before their coronavirus test. It was not revealed which countries that person visited.

Yesterday I watched an interview with 2 nurses, one was an ICU nurse and the other was a travelling relief nurse. The ICU one was explaining what her job was and how she's trained to care for 2 patients at once and just how complicated and difficult that work is, and how if you increase her patient load by just one person, the death rate shoots up because of the complexitiy in caring for someone at that level of sickness. It was quite illuminating. She was saying how stressed they all are, how understaffed and how underpaid.

The travelling nurse (this interview was in the US) said how she quit regular nursing to do relief nursing and she gets sent where ever she's needed and her pay is 10 times that of the other nurse!!!!!!! That's unbelievable. But as she said, who is going to stick at a low wage job when they can do exactly the same work for 10 times the money?

They both agreed that this is the problem. Staff are leaving in droves because they are underpaid and under appreciated and expected to work for extended shifts to cover staff shortfalls, it's stressful and dangerous work with very little reward. Hospital managers are telling the nurses they can't afford to pay them any more and then, because of staffing shortages, they are employing these travelling nurses and paying them 10 times the amount. It's insulting the intelligence of the regular nurses.

We are heading towards a third world situation where we have skeleton staffing in medical facilities if we don't start to value these nurses and pay them properly. Most nurses have nursing degrees and yet they are not getting graduate salaries. We reap what we sow.

Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

DJ Translation NL number of testing is crashing; last saturday 70,738 people did get tested. Last saterday the number of positive tests was an absolute record; 26,5%. Lowest number of tests since november 7 and possibly related with the policy of "self-testing"...

See https://nltimes.nl/2021/12/02/take-self-test-early-covid-symptoms-dont-run-ggd-health-ministry or https://nltimes.nl/2021/12/02/take-self-test-early-covid-symptoms-dont-run-ggd-health-ministry

On Friday, the Health Ministry will change its guidelines to the public about what to do when early symptoms of the coronavirus infection arise. People with symptoms that suggest an infection of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus should first take a self-test to check whether they are infected.

They do not have to remain home if the result is negative. With a positive result, they should stay home except to visit a local branch of the GGD municipal health service for a second test to confirm the initial result. Up until now, the advice was to always visit the GGD for a test if experiencing coronavirus-like symptoms.

DJ So step 1 = lowering number of tests....

https://nltimes.nl/2021/12/06/21000-coronavirus-infections-hospitalizations-may-reached-peak or https://nltimes.nl/2021/12/06/21000-coronavirus-infections-hospitalizations-may-reached-peak

The RIVM recorded another 21,053 positive coronavirus tests between Sunday and Monday morning. Even though over 20,000 more people tested positive for the SARS-Cov-2 coronavirus for the 20th time in 21 days, acute care leader Ernst Kuipers said on Monday he believes the peak number of daily Covid hospitalizations has been reached.

The new infections brought the seven-day moving average down slightly for the first time in five days. The average, based on raw data alone, stood at 21,781. That was two percent lower compared to a week ago. A combination of raw and corrected data put the figure at 21,735.

Roughly 20.7 percent of those tested by the GGD between November 28 and December 4 were given a positive diagnosis for the infection. That figure ticked up slightly with 26.5 percent of people having tested positive on Saturday just after the government asked that people use a self-test at the first sign of symptoms. They are then to call the GGD for an appointment when the test positive. About 92,800 were tested each of the seven days during that period, down from a peak of 96,800.

Step 2 = claim "cases are going down"..."new normal" is average 92,800 tests per day giving average 21,781 positive outcomes = "succes"....

Main reasons why less people get into the hospital is patients allready in hospital can not get (enough) care in time after some recovery..so they stay longer in hospital..."new hospitalcases are going down" !!!!

Also increasing number of HCW-ers are getting ill (or get a better job-lower risk, better pay/hours...)...

https://nltimes.nl/2021/12/06/intensive-care-capacity-expanded-9-percent-today or https://nltimes.nl/2021/12/06/intensive-care-capacity-expanded-9-percent-today

Due to the increase in severe coronavirus cases, Dutch hospitals will increase the number of intensive care beds to 1,250 from Monday. Hospitals must provide those beds, so they must scale down other care. A spokesperson for the National Coordination Center for Patient Distribution (LCPS) called this "very painful" last week.

The number of patients in the ICUs must always remain well below the maximum capacity. There must always be at least 188 beds available for emergency admissions. That number has not been achieved this past period. So far, hospitals have had a total of about 1,150 intensive care beds, sometimes more, sometimes less.

Expanding the number of ICU beds to 1,250 means that caregivers will be taken away from other tasks. The Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa) reported last week that one in three hospitals could no longer provide scheduled care at all. This includes things like knee and hip operations. Also, nearly a third of hospitals cannot consistently deliver critical scheduled care as planned. "This means that heart operations or cancer treatments are postponed once or sometimes several times.

DJ; Increasing beds was not the point...HCW-ers taken from other departments may increase ICU-staff...

Approximately 4,300 people died from November 29 to December 5, about 1,250 more than expected, Statistics Netherlands estimates. The excess mortality occurred among people of all ages and just as much among people in long-term care facilities as among the rest of the population. In the same week, health institute RIVM counted 249 people who died of the coronavirus.

The death rate has been higher than expected since the beginning of August. And from mid-October, the number of deaths has increased weekly.

An estimated 2,550 people over the age of 80 died at the end of November and beginning of December, about 850 more than usual for this period. Among people aged 65 to 80, an estimated 1,300 died, about 350 more than expected. There were 475 deaths among the under-65s, over 50 more than usual for this time.

Partly due to the coronavirus, many more people died during November than usual. The stats office reported about 3,500 more deaths than expected

Confidence in the government's approach to the coronavirus is at its lowest point since the start of the pandemic, according to research by the RIVM and the GGD GHOR. Almost three-quarters (75 percent) of respondents believe that (far) too few measures have been taken to combat the coronavirus. There is also criticism from respondents about the slow start of the booster vaccinations.

Only 16 percent are still optimistic about the government's approach, 46 percent are negative, and 39 percent are neutral.

The study, conducted among over 46,000 people in the period from November 24 to 28, shows that compliance with the measures has increased. For example, people worked more at home, kept their distance, and got tested more often in case of symptoms.

The percentage of research participants who got tested due to symptoms at a GGD or another test location went from 29 percent in the previous measurement round to 45 percent now. Another 32 percent said they did a self-test when they got symptoms. Never before have so many people gotten tested in case of symptoms, according to the RIVM.

According to the researchers, people also visited catering establishments and other people less often.

It was the 17th time this measurement was taken. The RIVM started this survey in the spring of 2020.

Eighty people in the Netherlands have now been diagnosed with the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, the RIVM said on Friday. That rose from 36 on Tuesday. The variant is believed to be more contagious than the more common Delta variant, which is most prevalent in the Netherlands. It was first discovered in passengers who entered the country on two flights from South Africa, but was later identified in samples taken as far back as November 19.

Out of the 80 people diagnosed with the Omicron variant, six people had no direct or indirect link to the Southern Africa region. Eighteen were on one of the flights from South Africa which landed on November 26. Another 53 had a travel history that included a country in the Southern Africa region. Three others had contact with someone who was infected with the variant.

At the same time, the RIVM also announced the lowest number of daily coronavirus infections in 26 days. A total of 17,562 people tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infection between Thursday and Friday morning, according to raw data from the organization. It was the fourth consecutive time the daily total was below 20,000.

That brought the seven-day moving average down to 20,070, the lowest level in about three weeks. Including some corrections to the raw data, that average was closer to 20,030, a seven-percent drop in a week.

Still, the percentage of people testing positive with the GGD continued to climb. During the period from December 2 - 8, an average of 23.5 percent of people tested by the health service received a positive diagnosis. That eclipsed a record average of 22.8 percent reported on Thursday. One possible explanation for the recent rise in positivity is that the government encouraged people to self-test before going to the GGD when the service was near its daily testing capacity. During the seven-day period, an average of 77,400 people were tested daily, down from a peak of 96,800 a week earlier.

DJ Omicron cases rising also in NL.

https://dutchreview.com/news/us-biochemist-criticizes-dutch-corona-policy/ or https://dutchreview.com/news/us-biochemist-criticizes-dutch-corona-policy/

Jose-Luis Jimenez, a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Colorado and one of the most-cited scientists in his field, is hardly impressed by Dutch coronavirus measures.

Like many vocal critics of coronavirus policy from within the scientific community, Jimenez, who specializes in aerosols, is deeply frustrated with basic — and frankly misleading — coronavirus regulations.

In a series of tweets on Wednesday, he claimed that recommendations to wash your hands regularly, wear facemasks, and practice distancing can hardly prevent the spread of the virus without proper ventilation.

Maybe he’s seen Rutte say “wash your hands” one too many times. Or perhaps he finds refuge in criticizing other nations’ mishandlings after two years of careless US leadership amidst the pandemic.

Air quality is the single most important factor

Jimenez is far from alone in thinking this. TU Delft’s own building engineer Philomena Bluyssen also believes that greater action needs to be taken. Much of the Dutch health recommendations mirror that of the World Health Organization, but these “are the minimum,” she tells Nature.

Bluyssen and other critics are not shy to point out the Dutch governments’ failure to provide comprehensive guidance and to allocate the necessary funding to ensure people’s safety in indoor spaces.

So while the government relies on the avondklok to keep the COVID-19 bogeyman away, many scientists worry that significant portions of the population — from schoolchildren and students to office workers, restaurant-goers, and prisoners — remain extremely vulnerable in the absence of effective ventilation.

Reaching boiling point

Some find Jimenez’s words are fueled by frustration, even though his opinion is in line with the scientific consensus.

As Charifa Zemouri, a Dutch expert on infectious diseases and public health told RTL Nieuws: “What I sense with him, and what I sometimes catch myself similarly feeling, is frustration. Why can’t we just go along with the scientific consensus? Sometimes it drives you to use more severe language.”

https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2021/12/14-of-passengers-from-south-africa-are-still-testing-positive-for-covid/ or https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2021/12/14-of-passengers-from-south-africa-are-still-testing-positive-for-covid/ ; Some 14% of passengers arriving in the Netherlands from South Africa over the past five days have tested positive for coronavirus, regional health board GGD Kennemerland said on Friday. That is a rise on last week, when 9% of passengers tested positive in the voluntary checks at the airport, but it is too early to speak of a trend, the health board said.

People travelling from South Africa to the Netherlands are required to show a negative PCR test before boarding and are ‘urgently recommended’ to have a second test at Schiphol. Around half of the arrivals on the two flights a day take advantage of this.

The health board said it did not know if passengers had been vaccinated or if they were infected with the Omicron variant of the virus. It did say, however, that it will continue to operate the special test centre at Schiphol until Christmas at least.

All arrivals from South Africa are supposed to go into quarantine on arriving in the Netherlands for at least five days, or longer if they test positive for the virus.

Health minister Hugo de Jonge said last week that there would be proper checks to make sure people did stay at home. Anyone caught breaking quarantine after arriving from a very high-risk country faces a €339 fine. ‘Anyone who can go home can quarantine there safely,’ he said. ‘There will be phone calls and checks on the doorstep.’

DJ There are no checks on quarantine...because there is not enough staff...so we keep importing Omicron cases due to poor checking...

https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2021/12/limburg-rises-in-eu-infection-list-as-omicron-takes-hold-in-amsterdam/ or https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2021/12/limburg-rises-in-eu-infection-list-as-omicron-takes-hold-in-amsterdam/ ; The Dutch province of Limburg continues to have more positive coronavirus tests per head of the population than virtually any other part of Europe, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. In the past two calendar weeks, two in 75 people in the province have had coronavirus, the ECDC said, which is a slight rise on the previous two weeks. With parts of Austria now reducing their infection rate, Limburg has climbed from 12th to sixth place in the ECDC ranking.

In Europe as a whole, 132 regions are now ‘dark red’, compared with 119 last week. Only parts of Italy, Spain and Romania have a lower risk of catching coronavirus.

Meanwhile, the health authorities in Amsterdam have now identified the Omicron variant in two people with no links to southern Africa, suggesting the new version is now spreading in the general population, the Parool reported. The two cases were identified in 200 samples taken from the city’s test centres for extra checks on Monday. Five cases were also identified on Tuesday and four on Wednesday, but contact tracing has not yet established if there is a South African link to them.

DJ Due to decrease in testing a lot of (Omicron) cases will be missed. (It will be a long winter)

DJ My impression; more and more doubts on the legality of the (in)action by the NL "government"...https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2021/12/schiphol-airport-may-have-to-cut-flights-to-meet-environmental-rules-nos/ or https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2021/12/schiphol-airport-may-have-to-cut-flights-to-meet-environmental-rules-nos/ ; The next cabinet may have to take drastic action to ensure the future of Schiphol airport because it does not meet rules on noise and nitrogen compound pollution, government legal advisors have told broadcaster NOS. Without far-reaching measures, the airport may have to cut the number of take-offs and landings by 20% to 400,000 a year, the broadcaster said. In order to keep the current number of aircraft movements, the government will have to buy out farmers working close to the airport and reduce the speed on nearby motorways to 80 kph to cut pollution in the vicinity, the sources said.

DJ The NL government "forget" to update/renew all kinds of permits...allowing Amsterdam to increase flights...Corona did reduce the number to 250,000 per year...According to some legal experts that is the number allowed by the permits...Just "another mistake"....

Nils Melzer sent out two tweets criticizing officers with videos from a protest on the Malieveld in The Hague last year, and a protest in Amsterdam this past weekend.

-

Professor Melzer is the Human Rights Chair at that Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights, and a Professor of International Law at the University of Glasgow. For over five years, he has served as the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

DJ There have been several reports/cases of police beating up people allready "down"....it is unprofessional and causing further escalation.

NL has seen police violence in the past with plainclothes police vigilantes beating up demonstrators when the camera's/press was gone. I may not agree on the views of people demonstrating but police tactics did worsen the situation in several cases.

Part of the problem was lack of policecapacity....help from military police (not allways trained for riots)  also did not help.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yDfaaKwL9w or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yDfaaKwL9w kingsday april 27 in Arnhem-last year. People were having an illegal party in the park....could it not be solved more peacefull ?

Another question I have if it was all police or also "police-helpers" (Handhaving) using police violence.

Spendingcuts on public services does mean police has to little staff doing to much work...wich does cause more incidents. Also this pandemic does cause new police(wo)men not getting the normal training.

DJ-I think most police(wo)men are trying to do a good job...but distrust in governmentpolicies/rules is putting the police in an impossible position.

I find it very sad to see my country ending up more and more violating basic human rights-both by police, tax office, gasexploration (in the north of NL gasexploration causing earthquake damage to houses with government failing to compensate in time), and the NL legal system unable to correct this in time. They did admit they failed several times....

Riot police tried to break up thousands of Dutch protesters as crowds gathered in Amsterdam to protest Covid lockdown and vaccination measures in the Netherlands today. Demonstrators, most of whom didn't wear masks and ignored social distancing guidelines, defied the local government's outlawing of the protest due to fears some demonstrators might be planning to attend 'prepared for violence'. Videos on social media showed one man escaping a police dog biting his hand, and, in other clips, showed chaos unfolding as crowds ran around the city. Some could also be seen being hit with batons as authorities tried to break up the march.

Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema issued an emergency ordinance, empowering police to clear the central Museum Square, after the protesters violated a ban on holding public gatherings during the latest wave of coronavirus infections. As crowds marched, they played music and held yellow umbrellas in a sign of opposition to the government measures before being pushed away from Amsterdam's Museum Square as riot police marched across the grass to clear the area, sending the demonstrators into nearby streets after the municipality later issued an emergency order for people to leave.

Some questions on police tactics/plans...

-Why use policevans as weapons/tools to break up (illegal) gatherings/demonstrations ? Lack of (wo)manpower ?

-The timeline of last sunday Amsterdam protests may hint riot police pushing demonstrators away from the "Museumplein" (a major square) while more riot police was waiting in the direction most of the demonstration was directed to....in Amsterdam.

I would welcome de-escalation...if you can not stop the protests "advice people not to come" but authorities should not deal with protests this way in a democratic country...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0okRzgNrc68 or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0okRzgNrc68 totally unacceptable...

NL further total mismanagement during this pandemic;

https://nltimes.nl/2022/01/04/thousands-tourists-diagnosed-covid-last-week-1000-visited-austria or https://nltimes.nl/2022/01/04/thousands-tourists-diagnosed-covid-last-week-1000-visited-austria

Winter sports holidays have made Austria the primary international destination where residents of the Netherlands contracted the coronavirus. Figures from the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) show that 964 people who tested positive last week visited the Alpine country within 14 days of their trip. That equals 15.8 percent of all infections that were traced to another country between December 27 and January 3, or roughly 6,100 in total. That figure was likely much lower than the real total due to contact tracing limitations, the RIVM said.

France, also a popular ski and snowboard destination, follows in second place with 740 confirmed cases. In third is Belgium, which 682 people had visited before they were later found to be infected. That was followed by Germany (669 cases) and Spain (605 cases). Some 339 infected people also visited Italy in the last fourteen days, according to the figures, which were first reported by AD.

-

The United Kingdom, which is the only one of the most-frequently visited countries that has long been regarded by the government as a “very high-risk area” due to coronavirus, is in the middle of the list with 256 returning tourists having tested positive in the Netherlands. The United States is at roughly the same level.

The RIVM called the figures "underestimations of the actual numbers and percentages.” Due to the high number of infections, the GGD health service branches do not always successfully conduct source and contact investigations after someone tested positive. In many cases, it is never established where someone likely contracted the virus. Of all the people who tested positive last week, at least 5.9 percent traveled abroad recently.

The Outbreak Management Team (OMT) also notes in its latest advice "a large increase in reports of positively tested persons who have recently traveled to the Netherlands from abroad.” The experts who advise the Cabinet on the fight against coronavirus expect this number to increase further in the coming weeks and months.

Everyone who comes to the Netherlands from abroad should take a self-test immediately after arrival, and repeat this after five days, the OMT said.

Again-like last year-NL imported many cases after wintersports...most of them from Austria...but travel did bring a lot of variants to NL...the place were virusses meet !

https://nltimes.nl/2022/01/04/virologist-decision-open-schools-premature or https://nltimes.nl/2022/01/04/virologist-decision-open-schools-premature ; Groningen virologist Bert Niesters said he did not think it was wise to make a definitive decision to reopen primary and secondary schools on schedule immediately after the winter break, given the growing number of coronavirus infections. He said he understands that the Cabinet is concerned about the learning disadvantages that arise from moving education online, and that there was considerable political pressure placed on the Cabinet. "But if classes are immediately sent home and schools start to close, we will have to again wait and see what they will say," Niesters stated.

-

Niesters said he did not understand why primary and secondary education was allowed to reopen, but higher education will remain closed. He was concerned that the Cabinet is constantly going back and forth with their coronavirus policy. "There has never been a target number for the number of infections at which decisions are made; No answer to the question, 'Where are we going?'"

The Dutch public health institute was informed of nearly 35,000 new coronavirus infections in the Netherlands between Thursday and Friday morning. That was more than 10,000 higher than the previous record set just one day earlier. The RIVM said Friday's high figure also includes all of the data which was missing from its report on Thursday due to an IT error.

Despite the aberration caused by the missing data, the Netherlands has already broken its record for most infections reported in a week during the pandemic. The official statistic is calculated every seven-day period ending on Tuesday morning. Since the last report, a total of 84,244 coronavirus infections were registered by the RIVM, with four more days left to go. The previous weekly record was 82,340, set in December 2020. Testing was not available in the Netherlands on a wide scale until June 2020, over three months after the pandemic spread to the country.

A total of 34,954 positive test results were recorded by the RIVM in its daily update on Friday. That pushed the seven-day moving average up 14 percent in a day to 21,526, based on raw data alone. The figure reached its highest point in over a month after ten consecutive increases. A combination of raw and corrected data pegged the figure at 21,487, a 62 percent increase in one week.

Amsterdam destroyed its old record with a figure of 3,661, nearly two-thirds higher than the previous record set in the capital on Wednesday. That pushed the city's seven-day average up to 1,902, a 114 percent increase in a week. Rotterdam also set a new record of 2,420, nearly double its previous record. That city's seven-day average moved to 1,136, which  doubled in a week. Utrecht also reported 965 infections, pushing that city's average to 533, and another 848 tested positive in Groningen, where the seven-day average was 345.

The basic reproduction value jumped up significantly to 1.16, a figure which estimates the coronavirus situation on December 23. That means that 100 people contagious with the infection on that date was likely to pass it on to 116 others, who then infected another 135 people. The figure was at a more manageable 1.02 just three days earlier.

Between December 30 and January 5, about 34.8 percent of those tested by the GGD received a positive diagnosis, also a record. An average of 63,281 tests were completed each day during that period, a third more than the previous week. Over 90,000 tests were conducted on January 5 alone.

The police hermetically sealed off the Gelderland municipality of Apeldoorn on Wednesday evening to prevent demonstrating farmers on tractors from reaching the police station on Europaweg. The municipality learned on social media that farmers would try to free previously arrested activists in custody there. Mayor Ton Heerts issued an emergency ordinance on Wednesday evening for a large part of Apeldoorn to give the police room to work.

The police closed the exit to Apeldoorn on the A1 highway on Wednesday evening. There was a police blockade on the provincial road N304, which also shut off Europaweg. There were also many police vehicles and barriers in other places and around the municipality.

The demonstrators advanced on Kanaal Zuid on the outskirts of Apeldoorn. The police set up a blockade there. They ordered the farmers to leave, and after over 90 minutes, they complied. Various groups of activists on tractors tried to reach Europaweg via other routes, but each one encountered a large police force.

Farmers used their tractors to break through the police line close to her home, and at one point the situation was so dangerous, police officers say they had to flee for their own safety. Farmers also threw fireworks and dumped manure on the road.

Why spent tax money on public goals, healthcare, education when you can spent that money on your party-sponsors ?

The NL "liberal party" vvd made our democracy into a democrazy....But that "neo-liberal revolution" did destroy public healthcare in many countries. May be one of the reasons why SARS-1 was stopped in 2003, SARS-2 was NOT stopped in 2020...it is political...).

Somehow the neo-liberals claim to "save the climate" by defunding public transport...Number of people riding a bike getting killed in NL traffic is "high"-almost daily...

Since the pandemic is NOT over-government just is ignoring it...we may face another lockdown to avoid a total collapse of public healthcare (with NL hospitals now also taking in wounded from Ukraine...).

If we want to get out of this global crisis we need leaders leading us into another direction...we may NOT survive the present "leaders"...

Aid agency Médicins sans Frontières has described conditions at Ter Apel refugee reception centre as ‘inhumane’ after answering an unprecedented call for emergency aid in the Netherlands.

The deteriorating situation was underlined on Wednesday when a three-month old baby died in a sports hall being used as an overspill centre for new arrivals.

The asylum accommodation service COA said it was ‘deeply shocked by this terrible event’, but would not comment on the circumstances of the infant’s death while an investigation is ongoing.

Médicins sans Frontières (MSF) will start work on Thursday to provide medical and psychological care to refugees in Ter Apel, which is the first port of call for anyone seeking asylum in the Netherlands.

In recent weeks up to 700 people have slept outside the gates of the facility because there is no space inside, where there is an official limit of 2,000 places.

On Wednesday the regional safety board ordered all tents and makeshift shelters to be removed because of security concerns.

As tensions grow fights have broken out outside the camp, with people using knives and improvised weapons such as tent pegs. ‘Medical emergencies’ Judith Sargentini, director of MSF’s Dutch branch AzG Nederland, said the conditions at Ter Apel were ‘inhumane’. ‘AzG has existed for 50 years, but this is the first time we have provided emergency aid in the Netherlands, and we’re doing it because the Dutch government has asked for it.’

The agency said it had found people with chronic illnesses, pregnant women and children among those sleeping outdoors.

Some had run out of medicine for their condition, while others had developed skin conditions after not being able to wash for a week. ‘If this situation continues it will lead to serious medical emergencies,’ Sargentini told the AD.

The Red Cross closed its humanitarian service point on Wednesday for the second time in a week after being overwhelmed with enquiries.

Red Cross closed A spokesman said more staff were needed to cope with the extra demand and it was not clear when the service point would reopen.

Last week it was closed because the Red Cross was concerned about the safety of its workers after fights broke out at the camp.

The organisation warned back in June that the situation at Ter Apel was ‘inhuman and untenable’, with refugees not having access to food and water for hours.

The safety council said it had ordered tents outside the gates to be removed because they could be used to store weapons or illegal substances.

The beige overhead covers put up by the COA will remain in place.

Other security measures have been stepped up after the municipal council in Westerwolde issued an emergency order giving police wider powers to stop and search people at the centre and increasing the use of security cameras.

DJ, Not in this article;

-Two refugees send to hospital, one with hearthproblems, the other with neglected diabetes-did not get insulin for one month

-in sewage samples polio virus residu was detected

DJ-The NL government created this crisis on purpose to keep refugees away from NL. The "neo-liberal" vvd even wants to close NL borders for refugees-in the mean time sending tens of millions worth of weapons to keep wars going...

Ukraine refugees-since there is a EU-Ukraine treaty-are "refugees first class" allowed to work, better housing etc. There are around 75,000 Ukrainian refugees in NL.

DJ-NL is in a major political crisis...the present "liberal-cristian-coalition" has lost most public support...but opposition is very divided. Both to the right and left of the present government coalition several parties try to gain support. (DJ-with a large group of the population very likely not going to vote or casting a "protest-vote"...trust in politics is at a very low point).

Like US, UK, in NL (and several other European continent countries) social unrest, strikes, will increase. Inflation, housing, etc. are growing problems. Since a lot of NL houses are build on clay the extreme drought is causing cracks in the walls/foundations...Housing prices may go down-putting a lot of people in further problems; they soon may learn they "own a debt, the bank owns the house...").

More people have lost faith in the current Cabinet than any other Cabinet under Prime Minister Mark Rutte, according to a poll from EenVandaag. Two thirds of respondents said they wanted new elections.

The Cabinet received a score of 3.3 from 30,000 respondents on EenVandaag's Opinion Panel. The energy, purchasing power and migrant crises were the some of the reasons many people felt the current Cabinet was ineffective. The nitrogen controversy and gas extraction in Groningen were also important issues to the panelists.

"Many people are literally in the cold this winter and groceries have become very expensive. I see no leadership from the Cabinet and I feel that we as citizens do not matter," one member of the panel told EenVandaag.

Most respondents said they believed the current problems would only get worse. For example, 80 percent believed purchasing power would further deteriorate, 72 percent thought the energy crisis would intensify and 69 percent thought the asylum and housing crises would worsen.

Even a sizeable amount of coalition party supporters said they wanted new elections within the next six months. "This Cabinet has completely lost the majority of the Netherlands with the nitrogen, asylum and energy policy. In addition, they strongly disagree with each other in the coalition, which means that no decisive action is possible. New elections are needed to solve this," a VVD voter told EenVandaag

Security measures have been heightened for Princess Amalia and Prime Minister Mark Rutte amid fears that an organized crime group will attack or kidnap one of them, De Telegraaf reports.

The police and Public Prosecution Service (OM) are on high alert because of indications that the group's leaders will target the princess or prime minister. Authorities are also concerned with the recent close contact between two high-profile inmates of the Extra Secure Institution in Vught, Ridouan Taghi and Mohammed B.

Taghi is an alleged criminal leader, while B. is serving a life sentence for the murder of Theo van Gogh. B. was transferred due to concerns that the two were becoming too close. However, they have since exchanged letters that may have contained encoded messages, according to De Telegraaf.

The Dutch crown princess began attending the University of Amsterdam in early September. She appears not to be living in her dorm, De Telegraaf reports.

This is the second time Rutte has been allegedly targeted by the criminal group. Last September, the prime minister's security was stepped up due to suspicion that he could be attacked or abducted by organized crime

DJ, At least two men were arrested for making claims-on "social media" they wanted to kill PM rutte...Very unreal for NL norms...https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2022/09/justice-minister-slams-wokeism-extreme-right-and-conspiracy-theorists-in-democracy-speech/ or https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2022/09/justice-minister-slams-wokeism-extreme-right-and-conspiracy-theorists-in-democracy-speech/ ; Justice minister Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius has slammed wokeism, extreme right-wing politicians and conspiracy theorists as a threat to Dutch democracy, in a speech in Amsterdam. The justice minister said that the government’s own ‘large mistakes’ in dealing with gas damage in Groningen and in the childcare benefits affair that felled the last administration, have created a chasm between rulers and people, but named two new ‘threats’ to democracy. In the annual HJ Schoo reading on Monday night, she said government failings and serious criminality are not the only challenge to Dutch society: wokeism, fake news and extreme politics that feeds on conspiracy theories are others.

DJ, Opening borders while also decreasing spending on police, customs did open doors for international crime...If a German commits a crime in NL returns to Germany it may be difficult to take legal steps...borders still matter in fighting EU crime...

Also fire arms from the Yugoslavia-more recent-Ukraine wars end up in criminal hands. The shooters using those weapons often are under 18 y/o....

DJ;

https://nltimes.nl/2022/09/20/little-confidence-dutch-politics-trust-rutte-iv-cabinet-plummets or https://nltimes.nl/2022/09/20/little-confidence-dutch-politics-trust-rutte-iv-cabinet-plummets ;

Netherlands residents’ confidence in Dutch politics has never been as low as it is now, Ipsos found in a study commissioned by NOS for Prinsjesdag. Trust in the Rutte IV Cabinet and Prime Minister Mark Rutte himself is also reaching new lows.

A year ago, 61 percent of Netherlands residents had little to no confidence in Dutch politics. That increased to 67 percent this year. Lack of trust in the Cabinet increased from 63 percent last year to 71 percent now. And 67 percent of Netherlands residents have no confidence in Rutte as Prime Minister, compared to 56 percent last year. In September, two-thirds of 30,000 EenVandaag respondents said it was time for new elections.

The Rutte IV Cabinet received a failing score of 4.2, an entire point lower than the 5.2 Netherlands residents gave it around the municipal elections in March. Since the Cabinet took office in January, Rutte’s fourth team of Ministers and State Secretaries has never gotten a “sufficient” score.

The Cabinet still has majority support only among people who voted for the VVD (69 percent) and D66 (55 percent). The supporters of the other two coalition parties, CDA and ChristenUnie, are much more pessimistic. Sixty percent of CDA voters and 62 percent of CU supporters have little to no trust in the Cabinet. Among the opposition parties, distrust in the Cabinet ranges from 71 percent of GroenLinks voters to 96 percent of BBB voters.

According to the Ipsos researchers, the new low for confidence in politics has to do with new crises emerging while old problems have still not been solved. A massive 77 percent of Netherlands residents think the country is going in the wrong direction.

When asked why they don’t have confidence in politicians, 64 percent cited the energy crisis, 59 percent the housing market, 58 percent immigration and asylum, 56 percent inflation, and 55 percent healthcare.

Those are also the things the Cabinet should focus on, according to voters. Politicians should pay less attention to the freedom of religion, development cooperation, and nitrogen problems, they believe

Of course NL is not the only country in a deep crisis...one problem is there may not be much alternatives...

Update 8:17 a.m. - More information regarding protesting farmers added to paragraphs 3 and 4

Today is Prinjsesdag, Budget Day, in the Netherlands. The Hague implemented an emergency ordinance in the city “due to serious fears of disturbance of public order and safety on Prinsjesdag” caused by protesting farmers. A few farmers are already in the city, and more are on the way.

“Farmers who want to demonstrate in the city with their tractors will be sent back and, if necessary, led elsewhere from the city boundary,” the municipality tweeted. A city spokesperson said the mayor issued the ordinance after the police “observed farmers’ movements” towards the city. “They would be on their way to The Hague to disrupt public order. We cannot take that on Prinsjesdag, especially now that the public is allowed to be present for the first time” since 2019.

-

"We have just seized a number of tractors at the Schenk Viaduct in The Hague for violating the emergency order. Farmers tried to drive their tractors into the center and did not follow our instructions," the police reported on Twitter.

This is the first coronavirus restrictions-free Budget Day since 2019. Many thousands of people are expected in The Hague, trying to catch a glimpse of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima driving past in the Glass Carriage or the Royal family waving from the balcony of Noordeinde Palace afterward.

and https://nltimes.nl/2022/09/19/energy-costs-expected-fall-everyone-cabinet-works-deal-energy-firms or https://nltimes.nl/2022/09/19/energy-costs-expected-fall-everyone-cabinet-works-deal-energy-firms

Political leaders in The Hague have nearly concluded an agreement with energy companies that will bring down electricity and gas costs for most households, reported broadcaster NOS. The final details are still being worked out in talks between the Cabinet and the businesses about measures which can be quickly introduced to combat the high cost of energy. Though sources close to the talks told NOS the meeting would almost certainly result in a done deal, sources told newswire ANP on Monday that “it can still be a long evening.”

Households should see a reduction in the advance payments they need to pay for energy bills in November and December, NOS reported. Then, starting in January, the government will take over payment of a portion of energy bills. This will be the case regardless of household income.

DJ Energy costs did see energy intensive production (glasshouses-agriculture; flowers... but also aluminium production) stop...Up to 16% of social housing has single-glass, poor insulation...so they already did pay a lot for energy and may not be helped enough...NL inflation now at a record 12% ...https://nltimes.nl/2022/09/19/mortgage-rates-quickly-rise-4-percent-summer-dip or https://nltimes.nl/2022/09/19/mortgage-rates-quickly-rise-4-percent-summer-dip may see a housing price bubble explode...

It is far more complex then "just energy" or "just inflation"....like in many other countries the basic problem is trust...emotional...

DJ,

https://nltimes.nl/2023/01/26/extinction-rebellion-activists-arrested-home-plans-block-a12-highway or https://nltimes.nl/2023/01/26/extinction-rebellion-activists-arrested-home-plans-block-a12-highway ;

The police arrested six climate activists at their homes on Thursday morning for plans to block the A12 highway on Saturday. “Calling for a criminal offense, such as blocking the public road, counts as sedition,” the Public Prosecution Service (OM) said.

According to the climate action group Extinction Rebellion (XR), at least two of the arrested nonviolent climate activists form part of the group, and the arrests are part of an effort to suppress the peaceful blockade. “XR condemns the criminalization of nonviolent climate activists,” XR said. “The right to peaceful protest is being trampled by the Dutch state.”

Extinction Rebellion plans to block the A12 highway next to parliament and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy in The Hague on Saturday to nonviolently demand an immediate end to the government's annual fossil subsidies. According to XR, over a thousand people have signed up for the protest.

According to the OM, concerns for global warming “is no excuse to call for blocking an important public road.” A previous blockade, on November 26 last year, “led to dangerous traffic situations in The Hague,” the OM said. The police, therefore, arrested six activists for questioning.

“Demonstration is a fundamental right and is facilitated by the municipality of The Hague,” the OM said. “But a demonstration is not a license to commit criminal offenses.” According to the OM, the authorities have no choice but to act if the safety of others is endangered.

Arresting people because they call for a protest/blockade of a road did get a lot of organizations angry;

According to news wire ANP, the arrests resulted in nine civil society organizations pledging to take part in the climate protest on the A12 on Saturday. "The directors consider it important to support the action because the right to protest in the form of civil disobedience is under pressure," Greenpeace said in a statement issued on behalf of itself, Urgenda, Milieudefensie, FNV, De Goede Zaak, Both ENDS, Fossielvrij NL, the Jonge Klimaatbeweging, and Oxfam Novib.

According to the organizations, the fact that the Dutch authorities labeled a call to demonstrate as sedition is "not only unjustified, it is also an attempt to negatively influence and criminalize the social debate about peaceful action."

"We disapprove of this intimidation and find it unacceptable," said Oxfam Novib director Michiel Servaes in the same statement

DJ, there is a basic freedom of expression, opinion, demonstration in NL.

In practice farmers using tractors -as a "tool"- did block roads many times. The police had to call for defense/military support to deal with that kind of blockades...

DJ-My view-police in NL is understaffed to deal with the amount of protests and may -sometimes- end up acting less professional. (In an anti-vaccine protest beating a demonstrator who already was on the ground is pointless. Here in Arnhem https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJ_NUnOTGJQ or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJ_NUnOTGJQ the "Kings day riots" april 2021 maybe could have been avoided when "stewards-like" response was given.

In this eXtinction Rebellion (XR) planned demonstration XR could have been asked to "take a certain role for security". XR in many countries is "all ages". Schoolstrikes to grandparents (sometimes over 80 !) willing to block highways...using riot police against such a group is "unwise".....

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.
