DJ...arresting people because they call for a demonstration in NL gets a lot of people-and even government supporting parties-very angry.

https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2023/01/hundreds-of-climate-activists-gather-in-the-hague-block-the-a12/ or https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2023/01/hundreds-of-climate-activists-gather-in-the-hague-block-the-a12/ and https://nltimes.nl/2023/01/28/hundreds-extinction-rebellion-activists-block-a12-hague or https://nltimes.nl/2023/01/28/hundreds-extinction-rebellion-activists-block-a12-hague ;

According to the climate activist group, talks with the municipality, the police as well as the OM are said to have led to nothing to facilitate a peaceful demonstration. “We are fully entitled to demonstrate in a location and manner of our choice. We do this peacefully and are committed to the safety of our demonstrators and road users. We hear from the media that the police are planning to refer people to the Malieveld, although our demonstration is not taking place there. We are disappointed that the police are trying to frustrate our demonstration in such a cynical way,” Kervers said in the group’s press release.

Angered by the arrests, leaders of about 40 civil society organizations are taking part in a show of support. The event will take place on an overpass over the A12 highway. Among others, Greenpeace, FNV, Urgenda, the Aids Fund, Cordaid, the COC, the Cyclists' Federation, the Humanist Verbond, Milieudefensie and the Stichting Vluchteling have announced their participation in this protest

DJ, so now also trade unions, refugee organizations, gay-right groups, etc. join the protests...What I do make of it there are several thousend protesters at (at least) three places in The Hague...

https://nltimes.nl/2023/01/27/netherlands-heading-socially-disruptive-asylum-crisis-involved-authorities-warn or https://nltimes.nl/2023/01/27/netherlands-heading-socially-disruptive-asylum-crisis-involved-authorities-warn

The authorities fear there won’t be any shelter available for thousands of asylum seekers within a few weeks. Undocumented migrants will then roam the country and cause problems, especially in the large cities, the authorities warned. If nothing changes, the COA expects a shortage of 8,000 reception places by April.

Over the past months, the Netherlands hastily set up thousands of shelter spots, so people didn’t have to sleep outside in the winter. But most of them are temporary. Nieuwsuur recently reported that the contracts for 35 locations would expire by June 1, leaving the country 38,000 reception places short.

The Ministry thinks more people will seek safety and shelter in the Netherlands this year than expected. According to NRC’s sources, the new forecasts show 45,000 asylum seekers coming to the Netherlands this year, 10,000 more than the Ministry’s estimate at the end of last year.

DJ, Very likely already thousends of refugees live with friends/family or in all kind of (homelees) shelters...So in a bad scenario tens of thousends of people may end up without shelter in NL this summer...NL "government" is supporting all kinds of crazy wars-however refugees-as a result of those wars-are not welcomed...

I think in most of "the west" trust in politics/government is gone..."Opposition parties" (UK-labour, NL-"left"-in Germany social democrats/greens are supposed to be the government) often offer no realistic alternatives...

Strikes to compensate for high inflation do see anti-strike laws made up by governments out of public support...The social/healthcare system is getting very overstretched...Police is out of policestaff to deal with a lot of issues...

Neo-liberalism is pushing NL-Europe towards collapse...(and then there are also pandemics and wars...)

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

https://nltimes.nl/2023/03/15/dutch-coalition-likely-lose-9-senate-seats-election-many-voters-undecided or https://nltimes.nl/2023/03/15/dutch-coalition-likely-lose-9-senate-seats-election-many-voters-undecided ;

The Rutte IV coalition of VVD, D66, CDA, and ChristenUnie will lose nine seats in the Senate after today’s Provincial Council elections, according to EenVandaag and Ipsos’ final poll before the polling stations opened on Wednesday. The poll also found that a remarkable number of voters are still undecided.

Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s VVD could lose its throne as the biggest party in the Eerste Kamer to both the right-wing farmers’ party BBB or the left-wing combination of PvdA/GroenLinks. According to the latest poll, the VVD could get 12 seats in the Eerste Kamer, the Dutch Senate. BBB stands at 13 projected seats and PvdA/GroenLinks at 14.

If this final poll comes close to the election result, the coalition will be even further away from a majority in the Eerste Kamer than after the 2019 election. Then the VVD, D66, CDA, and ChristenUnie got a joint 35 seats, already too few for a majority in the 75-seat Senate. According to the latest poll, the coalition will only have 23 seats after this election.

VVD stays stable at 12 seats. D66 drops from seven seats to 4, CDA drops from 9 to 5, and ChristenUnie from 4 to 2.

With 23 seats, the coalition would need 15 opposition seats’ support to pass anything through the Senate. It could go right-wing, working to gain support from BBB (13) and JA21 (3). Or it could look for help on the left from GroenLinks/PvdA (14) and SP (5).

According to the poll, today’s election will significantly shake up the Senate on the right wing. FvD will lose 10 of the 12 seats it won in 2019, leaving the far-right party with 2 seats. The PVV (8), BBB(13), and JA21 (3) all stand to make significant gains.

The picture on the left-wing side of the opposition is remarkably stable, EenVandaag said. PvdA/GroenLinks will get 14 seats, the same number the two parties got separately in 2019, at 8 for GroenLinks and 6 for PvdA. SP will gain one seat, going to 5, and animal party PvdD will go from 3 to 4.

The poll also showed that a remarkable number of voters were still undecided the day before the election. 43 percent of people who said they would vote did not yet know which party they would vote for. A day before the parliamentary election in 2021, 32 percent of voters were still dithering.

The many undecided voters could make the election results differ widely from the polls.

DJ, Due to neo-liberal rule for 12 years under rutte 40% of NL households live in poverty, 1-in-6 NL citizens "stand outside society"....Income inequality grew, we have a major housing crisis, strikes all over the public sector...

Maybe more important; trust in politics, governments in NL-like in many other countries-is at an all time low...DJ-My view-at present "politics" lost contact with most of the public they claim to represent...All over the world people want safety, a better future for their children, access to education, healthcare, housing, transport...An out of control neo-liberal/neo-conservative politics-only in contact with a rich elite-would even privatize "your mother"....While increasing their incomes "politics" is dumping all kinds of public responsabilities to "the market" for profit...

At the end (public, basic) services-once done at a price just to cover reasonable costs- become unaffordable for most...Price pushed up to maximize share holder value, pay for advertising, insane saleries for the CEO....

Why SARS-1 in 2003 was "stopped", SARS-2/CoViD-19 could become a pandemic simply is related to how politics disfunction...Once governments realized the need to keep its population "healthy and happy"  now  "politics is for sale"....

The tide is turning...

https://nltimes.nl/2023/07/06/survival-ruttes-fourth-cabinet-uncertain-amid-asylum-policy-infighting or https://nltimes.nl/2023/07/06/survival-ruttes-fourth-cabinet-uncertain-amid-asylum-policy-infighting ;

The future of the fourth Cabinet of Prime Minister Mark Rutte is uncertain, unnamed sources from both the Cabinet and the coalition parties told RTL NieuwsAD, ANP, the Telegraaf and NOS on Thursday. This comes in the wake of discussions held on Wednesday night among the coalition parties regarding the influx of asylum seekers and other migration issues. A new round of talks is scheduled for Thursday evening. If a compromise cannot be reached during this meeting, it might lead to the immediate dissolution of the coalition.

Debates about migration policy have been ongoing within the coalition for months. Rutte's VVD party and the CDA are calling for a strict set of measures to restrict the number of asylum seekers who enter the Netherlands, while D66 and ChristenUnie are more reluctant to implement strict measures on these matters.

A major point of disagreement centers around the development of a “two status system” for asylum seekers, in which incoming asylum seekers would receive either an “A” or “B” status at the start of their application process, and that would determine what rights they get. The A-status would be a permanent residence permit; the B-status would be temporary. The contention arises over whether people under B status are also entitled to family reunification rights.

The sources said this issue has notably caused a rift between the VVD and the ChristenUnie. The VVD aims to distinguish between refugees who face personal threats and those escaping from war. The party wants to make it more difficult for relatives of refugees in the latter group to enter the Netherlands. Sources also revealed to NOS that the VVD wants a monthly limit of 200 returnees from that group, along with a mandatory waiting period of two years before they are permitted entry into the Netherlands.

The ChristenUnie found the proposal unacceptable. D66 leader Sigrid Kaag is also said to have immediately indicated that the proposal is unacceptable.

Unnamed sources who spoke to RTL Nieuws said the current relationship between coalition parties is poor and toxic. This was evident during last night's discussions. It was reported by RTL Nieuws that members from D66 and ChristianUnie were taken aback and annoyed by Rutte's attitude. In the meetings, the prime minister was described as "unreasonable," with one member from D66 commenting, "He seemed to no longer want to listen. His approach towards the Cabinet is reckless."

"Rutte seems to be on a collision course,” a high-ranking source from the CDA said. "I've never seen him like that. It looks like he is pushing toward a crisis."

DJ, the "neo-liberal vvd" is not doing that well in the polls-but they hope to get votes by "stopping refugees"(from wars they supported...climate change they did not stop..).

The farmersparty BBB may gain a lot of votes and could be "a better partner" for rutte his vvd...Christian Union and Democrats '66 (more left wing neo liberals) would be kicked out...However CDA-VVD-BBB may not win enough votes...(8+28+23=59 seats...75 are needed-even with anti-Islam PVV -15 in latest poll- 74 seats would not be enough...

https://www.dutchnews.nl/2023/07/mark-rutte-coalition-broke-on-unbridgeable-asylum-differences/ or https://www.dutchnews.nl/2023/07/mark-rutte-coalition-broke-on-unbridgeable-asylum-differences/ scenario's;

-CDA "christian democrats" and vvd (neo-liberals/mark rutte) may try to continue their government...https://eenvandaag.avrotros.nl/peilingtrends/politiek/zetelpeiling/ or https://eenvandaag.avrotros.nl/peilingtrends/politiek/zetelpeiling/  and https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tweede_Kamerverkiezingen_2021 or https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tweede_Kamerverkiezingen_2021 in the present  (150 seats) parliament vvd has 34 seats, cda has 15 seats...so both conservative parties now still have 49 seats...with support of D66 now at 24 seats they would be having 73 seats...75+  would be needed for a majority In the latest polls vvd stands at 28 seats (-6), cda at 8 (-7), D66 at 12 (-12)...

So new elections would mean BBB-farmers party moving to 23 seats from 1....

Anti Islam party PVV now has 17 seats...in the latest polls it would be 15 (-2)...Groen Links and Labour/PvdA also have 17 seats...they plan to unite...in latest polss they would get 20 seats (+3)....So-for the "old parties" elections may cost them lots of seats...may even end rutte as PM....

-Continuation of a Rutte government is VERY unpopular....even a lot of the vvd/cda voters may be against this idea...It very likely further would destabilize the situation-worsen many crises-even further...

-New elections may result in an onworkable outcome...In NL parliament we already have 17 parties....There is not much support for a treshold...150 seats means 0,66% of the votes is one seat...In that way you already need a lot of votes...

-Polls indicate neo-liberals-vvd and farmer party-BBB may fight for who gets #1...both could get 1/6 of all the seats...together that would be 50 seats...

Labour-greens (Pvda/Groen Links) could end up with 20 seats, anti-islam pvv around 15-just like D66...so 5 parties would end up taking around 100 of the 150 seats...In elections we may see up to 15-20 other parties also trying to get votes....https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tweede_Kamerverkiezingen_2021#Deelnemende_partijen or https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tweede_Kamerverkiezingen_2021#Deelnemende_partijen had 37 parties....Some of them not that serious....https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Party_of_the_Future or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Party_of_the_Future also named "Feest Partij"=Party Party...may be one of them...

-So increasing a treshold may end up with less parties, in fact less democracy, but still NOT solve the problem...If a party would need to get at least two seats...1,5% of the votes-you still may see several small parties...In theory  if a minimum would be two seats with 50 seats open you could end up with 25 parties with each two seats...

-A "National cabinet" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_unity_government or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_unity_government with "limited political links between ministers and parties" may be a way out...However by now most parties in NL want elections...

Those elections very likely may be held at the end of october, early november....3-4 months from now...

-----------------

DJ-We may be in a political swamp very likely for months...This may bring "positions getting more clear" to get votes...

-The Ukraine war is costing a lot of money, worsening the housing situation and for what ? I think both on the right and soon also on the left from "main stream" voices will speak out against that war...(DJ-I am NOT neutral...I voted PSP-anti NATO when it was possible...I am left wing !)

-The refugee crisis is a factor...If the Ukraine war/other wars would end...less refugees show up in NL the point for creating this crisis will damage the vvd-neo liberals...

-Extinction Rebellion/XR is getting more and more active...we have seen a lot of crazy weather...More climate damage may also get more votes for "green parties" D66, Groen Links, Animal rights PvdD all claim to be "green"....

-Farm-fires...often killing thousends of farm animals-may be bad for BBB/farmers party (funded by farm-food producers)...and we may have that kind of fires quite often...

-H5N1 now is in wild birds in NL ...much less in poultry...The H5N1 situation may be also a factor...

-Of course CoViD is NOT over...

-In Berlin, in Spain, right wing parties give cars again more room at the costs of bikes/pedestrians...Riding a bicycle is seen as "left wing" not as a solution for a mobility problem (no doubt fossil fuel/car industry will promote that insanity...).

-Urban/Rural differences-and Holland versus rest of NL is also a problem...I live in the https://www.groenemetropoolregio.nl/english-green-metropolitan-region-arnhem-nijmegen/ or https://www.groenemetropoolregio.nl/english-green-metropolitan-region-arnhem-nijmegen/ If you include some other nearby places we have over 1 million people in this region (NL has a population of close to 18 million)...but we are NOT in Holland...see less investments in infrastructure, universities, culture...than there is in "Holland"...Farmers switchting from farm-animals to "green building" is part of that discussion as well...NL is the second largest agri-culture exporter after the US...if you exclude flowers we end up #5 in food export...

So lots of discussions...

Outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte will not be the VVD leader in the upcoming election, he said before the start of a parliamentary debate on his latest Cabinet collapsing. “When the new Cabinet takes office after the elections, I will leave politics,” he said.

Rutte said he made his decision on Sunday. “There has been speculation over the past few days about what would motivate me. The only answer is the Netherlands. My position must be seen in that light.” He, therefore, decided not to make himself available to lead the VVD in the upcoming election.

Rutte stressed that his decision to leave politics was his own and entirely personal. He based it on the developments over the last few weeks. He’s notified the VVD leader in the Tweede Kamer and his party chair, he said.

DJ, Rutte (56) may increase his teaching at a The Hague/Den Haag school...

Since elections may be held in mid november there may be more surprises...

Does the farmers party support the Ukraine war/NATO ? Or could BBB maybe even go for neutrality (NL was neutral till may 10-1940...) and "make trade not war"...look more at the expanding BRICS+ market ?

DJ, Since rutte made clear he did not want to run again for vvd-neo liberal party leader...only finish his job as PM untill there is a new government formed (most likely elections mid november...in 2024 there may be another government...several parties involved...this is NL !) Justice Minister Dilan Yesilgöz wants to succeed Mark Rutte and become the new leader of the VVD. She has put herself forward as a candidate for party leader, the party announced after a report by the Telegraaf. According to the newspaper, the party board put her forward as a preferred candidate for the leader, but the VVD said that the preferred candidate will not be chosen until later this week.

“What Mark Rutte has done for the VVD and for the Netherlands can hardly be expressed in words. It is his shoulders that I stand on if I succeed him as party leader,” Yesilgöz said in the Telegraaf. She said she is ready to make the Netherlands stronger and more resilient. “Safer, more prosperous, and ready for the future. With an eye and ear for the interests of the people for whom we do it, the inhabitants of the Netherlands.”

Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈdilɑn jeːˈʃilɡʏs seːˈ£eːrijʏs];[3] born 18 June 1977) is a Dutch politician who has served as Minister of Justice and Security in the Fourth Rutte cabinet since 10 January 2022. A member of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), she previously served as a member of the House of Representatives from 2017 to 2021 and State Secretary for Economic Affairs and Climate Policy from 2021 until 2022.

Yeşilgöz-Zegerius was born in Ankara, Turkey, and emigrated to the Netherlands as a child.[4] Her family is from a Turkish-Kurdish[5][6] background and originally from Tunceli.[7]

After attending her secondary education at the Vallei College in Amersfoort between 1991 and 1997, Yeşilgöz then studied social and cultural sciences at the VU University Amsterdam where she obtained a Master's degree in Culture, Organization and Management in 2003.[8][9]

A main reason why people do not learn from history is they do not want to face history...

The christian democratic party CDA may have a problem in finding another leader...In polls they become a minor party (going from 15 seats to 8...most voters for CDA are old...The CDA may be replaced by the "pro-farmers party"BBB https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farmer%E2%80%93Citizen_Movement or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farmer%E2%80%93Citizen_Movement .

Here in NL we will have elections november 22- the rutte/PM government did fall over a -made up- refugee crisis...NL did see lots more refugees in the past...A basic problem is the neo-liberal politics did result in shortage of almost 1 million houses in NL...

https://www.dutchnews.nl/2023/08/without-action-more-children-will-grow-up-in-poverty-cpb-warns/ or https://www.dutchnews.nl/2023/08/without-action-more-children-will-grow-up-in-poverty-cpb-warns/ ;

The Dutch economy will grow by 0.7% overall in 2023 and double that next year, but unless the government takes action, more people will be living below the poverty line, the government’s macro-economic forecasting unit CPB said in its autumn statement.

Although spending power is expected to rise by 1.9% on average because of wage growth, some 7% of the country’s children will grow up in poverty next year without new measures, the CPB said on Thursday.

The Dutch economy has withstood several major shocks “surprisingly well” in recent years but the coronavirus crisis, the war in Ukraine and the energy crisis, high inflation and rising interest rates had a major impact on many households and businesses, the CPB said.

The economy did nevertheless contract slightly in the first two quarters of this year, mainly due to declining exports and consumer spending. And inflation is set to remain high for longer than previously expected, at 3.9% in 2023 and 3.8% in 2024, the CPB said.

DJ, shops did sell less goods for higher prices...April-May-June 2023 did see -4% sales in goods-higher prices meant +6% sales in money because of higher prices...

Food increased sales +10% in value in money while food products sales did decrease 3%...

In other words compared to second three months of 2022 you had to pay 110% of the 2022 price to get only 97% of the 2022 food products...

https://nltimes.nl/2023/08/17/trading-adyen-shares-briefly-halted-25-price-loss or https://nltimes.nl/2023/08/17/trading-adyen-shares-briefly-halted-25-price-loss ;

Trading in Adyen shares was briefly halted on the Amsterdam stock exchange on Thursday. The move followed a share price loss of 25 percent. That is the largest ever daily loss for the payment company, which has been listed on the Amsterdam stock exchange since 2018. The company’s very disappointing results caused the price drop. After the short trading break, the loss continued to mount. At around 11:35 a.m., the stock price had plummeted nearly 27 percent.

DJ The payment company lost 18 billion€ in market value in one day NL stock trading yesterday...

NL is the "trader" of the EU/Europe...If the EU-Germany "has problems" it may do a lot of harm in NL economy...

However less export from imported goods may result in product being dumped in NL at low prices...

DJ-I expect NL may NOT see economic recovery in the second half of 2023;

-higher prices for food/energy=higher wages

-higher interest rates may push up costs even further...

-Housing crisis means higher costs for housing

-Economic problems outside NL may see less global trade=less NL import/export

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_depression#Definitions or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_depression#Definitions ;

Generally, periods labeled depressions are marked by a substantial and sustained shortfall of the ability to purchase goods relative to the amount that could be produced using current resources and technology (potential output).[3] Another proposed definition of depression includes two general rules:[4][5]

 1. a decline in real GDP exceeding 10%, or
 2. a recession lasting 2 or more years.

There are also differences in the duration of depression across definitions. Some economists refer only to the period when economic activity is declining. The more common use, however, also encompasses the time until the economic activity has returned close to normal levels.[2]

DJ...NATO "had to move east" resulting in higher food/energy costs...NATO countries than increased spending on the wars they created....

In many ways than increasing interests to limit inflation is only making matters worse...

DJ-here in NL the extreme right wing "neo-liberal" vvd is supporting netanyahu...PM rutte-hoping his next job will be secretary general of NATO- again visited his "friend" bibi...NL is sending spare parts of F35's a.o. to Israel...also a hub for US weapon transports...

NL economy is in recession because of NATO wars...extreme weather, inflation increase poverty..

The next cabinet will have several tough issues to deal with but political parties have failed to make the choices needed to solve them in their manifestos, according to a new analysis by the government’s socio-cultural think-tank SCP.

The SCP analysed 10 party programmes and concluded that while they all list which problems they want to tackle, they don’t say how they plan to do it.

“For example, they have a lot to say about personnel shortages in healthcare and education, but they don’t actually deal with them,” said SCP director Karen van Oudenhoven in current affairs show Nieuwsuur. “Voters are not looking for promises. They want the cabinet to solve problems.”

In addition, parties which do make concrete proposals fail to analyse if they can actually be put into practice. Plans to “get a grip on” migration and to combat climate change often conflict with international and EU treaties, the SCP points out.

The SCP looked at 10 parties based on their current position in parliament, apart from Pieter Omtzigt’s NSC, because its manifesto came too late.

At least three parties will be needed to form the next government and that means major compromises will have to be made across a wide range of issues.

DJ...also in NL "politics" has lost contact with reality in many ways...

I notice from climate activists to public healthcare/education/trade unions a tendency for more radicalism...Somehow after the election to destruction of everything "public" may even increase further...

Parliament elections today in NL https://www.dutchnews.nl/2023/11/live-blog-dutch-election-day-as-it-happens/ or https://www.dutchnews.nl/2023/11/live-blog-dutch-election-day-as-it-happens/

Among the more unusual locations where voting is taking place are the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam and Madurodam in The Hague. Cinemas, museums, churches and even a private home will also become polling stations for the day.

The weather forecast for Wednesday is for a dry day with some sunshine in the morning, and frost in sheltered places at night. Experts suggest that good weather encourages more people to vote, with the lowest turnout ever recorded – just 73% – taking place on a chilly wet day in 1998. Turnout at the last general election was 78.7%, down three percentage points on 2017.

There are 26 parties to choose from...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elections_in_the_Netherlands or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elections_in_the_Netherlands

One of many issues; https://www.dutchnews.nl/2023/11/too-many-cars-too-little-space-puts-parking-at-a-premium-nos/ or https://www.dutchnews.nl/2023/11/too-many-cars-too-little-space-puts-parking-at-a-premium-nos/ ;

The problem is made worse by the growing number of cars, CBS figures show. In the four years to the start of 2023, 440,000 new cars were added to the Dutch fleet, bringing the total to 9 million, most of which are owned privately.

DJ one car per two persons...Car use is increasing, public transport decreasing-linked a.o. to CoViD...But also the present right wing government has lots of lobby-links with fossil fuel (Shell), car industry etc...A possible outcome might be an even more right wing coalition...

Cities-suburbs-rural area's all vote different. Most cities might be more "left" wing..there is also a "bible-belt" still. But in general "religious linked" parties (christian democratic) face an aging problem...(maybe by now there might be more "active muslims" going to a mosq with some frequency than there are "active cristians" going to a church with some frequency...How do you define "religion" in statistics ? Should you define religion ? NL had "church tax" running via a tax system. In 1940 public administration did inform the nazi's where to find the Jews. Over 100,000 Jewish-Dutch were murdered...Since Amsterdam had a high % of Jewish population about 10% of the Amsterdam population did not survive the war...).

Trust in politics is (very) low....Even employers criticize "politics" for "kicking to many cans" down the road...Fragmentation-to many parties-is discussed...But if you introduce a 5% treshold you still may see over 10-15 parties in parliament...Only a few parties only get 1 seat in the 150 seat "second chamber"...Coalition is the normal way cabinet/government is made in NL. Often the largest party also has the Prime Minister...but not always the largest party ends up in government...

The anti-islam party (run by wilders) did quite well in latest polls...If he/they end up becoming a major factor it will increase public unrest even more...The "farmersparty"BBB only would get 6 seats...a "new" party "new social contract" run by a dissident politician (former christian democratic) may end up with a lot of votes...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

https://www.dutchnews.nl/2023/11/far-rights-wilders-wins-a-shock-23-of-dutch-vote-in-exit-poll/ or https://www.dutchnews.nl/2023/11/far-rights-wilders-wins-a-shock-23-of-dutch-vote-in-exit-poll/ ;

The far right PVV, which wants to close the borders to all immigration and ban the Koran, is the big winner in the Dutch general election. The shock exit poll result, which had not been predicted, saw the party take 23% of the vote, doubling its support from 2021.

DJ, Blaming the housing crisis on refugees, NOT "mark(et) economy"...At first the pvv claimed "foreigners" take the jobs (and of course "women") now "refugees" steal the houses...

Yes-we do see a lot of refugees...because we-in NATO-do start/support a lot  of wars..."We" keep worsening climate change...

-It fits in a trend; Argentina with Milei winning the Argentina elections...trump very likely winning in the US 24...In Germany, France also "right wing populists" score well in polls...

-NL can be seen in many different ways; Urban-rural...

North part may still have Scandinavian influence, the east German, South French influence...The west part of NL  ("Holland" with over 5 million out of 118 million Dutch) has "Anglo Saxon influence...

I still have to look at statistics; North may see more "social democratic influence", East may have gone for "Omtzigt" New Social Contract, the south may have gone for PVV, the west for "vvd" neo-liberals...

Also the four main parties are run by people from the south (PVV, Social democratic), east (Omtzigt.NSC) only the vvd-neo-liberal is run by a person (the only woman) from Amsterdam...

-DJ, This outcome (or any outcome) for now very likely will result in new elections within a few years...

The pvv in some aspects (social security, some public interests) may do less harm than the vvd has done...The vvd forced new elections over "refugees" while the problems (wars, bad housing policy) were the outcome of their neo-liberal extremism...In my view the vvd paved the road for the pvv..

The pvv may also be "very pro-Israel"...could even have been "started" with Israeli help...So the "Gaza-genocide" with NL media being pro-Israel in general, may also have been a factor...

-Some cities may have a totally different election outcome...Arnhem may not have seen 70%+ of the voters going to vote...(so 30%+ did not vote). In rural area's often 80%+ is voting...

-It will further worsen the many crises...We may have cold winter weather; resulting in energy costs further increasing inflation...

-It will be interesting to see if wilders/pvv can start/ger a governmentcoalition...It may take a lot of time (months) and might end up with nothing...

-The farmersparty  "BBB" went from 1 to 7 seaths in the 150 seats "second chamber"-marginal...

-We still may see 16 parties in parliament (and some of the parties may see PM's going their own way...)

-For that matter "chaos" is also reflected in these elections...but "politics" is supposed to get us out of chaos..not further in...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/geert-wilders-conservatives-surge-top-polls-just-days-dutch-election or https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/geert-wilders-conservatives-surge-top-polls-just-days-dutch-election ; Update (1841ET): It's official - Geert Wilders has won the Dutch elections and says he will lead the country's next government.

DJ, Wilders may be correct in claiming the NL voter is totally fed up with (present) politics...However for now he may NOT be able to get ANY !!! party to work with him...

From https://www.dutchnews.nl/2023/11/far-rights-wilders-wins-a-shock-23-of-dutch-vote-in-exit-poll/ or https://www.dutchnews.nl/2023/11/far-rights-wilders-wins-a-shock-23-of-dutch-vote-in-exit-poll/ ;

VVD leader Dilan Yesilgöz denied her party had made a “tactical error” by dropping Mark Rutte’s block on Geert Wilders’s party.

Rob Jetten, leader of D66, said that despite Wilder’s efforts to appear milder in his campaign, “his extreme ideas are still there in the background”. D66 is on target to win 10 seats, well down on its current total of 24 but better than had been forecast.

However, Jetten said, the VVD is also to blame. The party chose to allow the coalition to collapse in the summer “over the backs of refugees”.  The VVD has “opened the door” to the PVV by normalizing the politics of intolerance”.

Groningen University political scientist Leone de Jong told NOS that Jetten was right to partly blame the VVD. “The VVD let the cabinet fall over migration, but that theme has been claimed by the PVV and people prefer the original,” she said.

DJ, Most center and left wing parties will blame the vvd for creating (in more than one way) the crisis that did result in the pvv becoming the largest NL party...

pvv 37, vvd 24 seats out of 150 seats...together 61 seats...and most other parties may not want to work with them...

Labour/pvda 23, NSC/omtzigt 20, D66 "green liberal" 9 = 52 seats...with lots of other small parties they may be able to keep pvv and vvd (extremists) out...

https://www.dutchnews.nl/2023/11/election-2023-the-votes-have-been-counted-what-happens-next/ or https://www.dutchnews.nl/2023/11/election-2023-the-votes-have-been-counted-what-happens-next/ ;

Votes in the general election are still being counted and the official result is still some days away, but the process of putting a new coalition together is about to begin. Here’s what you need to know.

Firstly, will Geert Wilders be the next prime minister of the Netherlands? His party may have won 23% of the vote, and be by far the biggest in the lower house of parliament, but there are a whole load of bridges to cross before then.

Coalition negotiations

Later on Thursday, the leaders of all the parties which have won seats will meet parliamentary chairwoman Vera Bergkamp to decide who should be the verkenner – a senior statesman or women who looks into possible government coalitions in the days after a general election.

The verkenner holds talks with party leaders to sound them out on potential partnerships.

Once a potential coalition has been identified, the verkenner suggests a potential informateur, an appointment which has to be approved by the new house of parliament. He or she will then carry out the detailed negotiations with the parties likely to form a new cabinet.

DJ...The EU may "go" for Timmermans labour party leader as next PM...

Dj The Duran story (post above) is putting the (outcome of) NL elections in a European perspective. Puts former German PM Merkel in a position of "stabilizing" Europe. Since she left that job the EU did de-stabilize...so NL-PM rutte may have decided to no longer run NL neo-liberals...

In Germany https://nie-wieder-krieg.org/ or https://nie-wieder-krieg.org/ Sahra Wagenknecht -former "the Left"- stepped into the gap left behind by "left wing party elites betraying their voters"...German "green party", "social democratic party" now both promoting and supporting war...

21 wars and 216 armed military conflicts currently threaten the world (Heidelberg Institute for International Conflict Research HIIK). The danger of the war in Ukraine escalating to nuclear war is growing day by day. Innocent people die every day. We are worried about our future, the future of our children and grandchildren. We need a culture of peace and shared security.

Instead of relying on de-escalation and diplomacy, the federal government is supplying more and more weapons and is massively arming itself. Large parts of politics and the media are militarizing society. For the first time, Germany will reach the two percent target (according to NATO criteria). At 85.5 billion euros, military spending in 2024 will be the largest since the Federal Republic was founded. The healthcare system, infrastructure, support for children and affordable rents, education, science and training, on the other hand, are threatened by dramatic funding cuts. A social and economic catastrophe is looming for more and more people.

The sanctions against Russia, which affect people in the global south, in Europe and in Germany, also contribute significantly to this: inflation, increased energy and food prices as well as loss of real wages affect the population, especially the poorer sections of it, and endanger industrial development also in our country. Hunger crises are looming in the global south because grain, corn, vegetable oil and fertilizers are no longer arriving and prices have risen massively.
It is high time for a peace policy in Ukraine, in Europe and worldwide. In the run-up to the war in Ukraine, warnings were ignored and lessons on how to avoid war were disregarded. We must stop the slide towards World War III and a social, economic and ecological disaster. “Peace is not everything, but everything is nothing without peace.” (Willy Brandt) Only in peace and only through joint global efforts are social development, protection of the climate and nature and a future worth living for everyone possible.

We condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. We also condemn the previous breaches of treaties and non-fulfillment of commitments by NATO countries.

DJ..."left wing party elites" are destroying their own parties by going for extreme right wing politics...

https://www.zerohedge.com/political/where-europes-far-right-has-gained-ground or https://www.zerohedge.com/political/where-europes-far-right-has-gained-ground (very biased...ZH sometimes is right wing)...

DJ-A growing worry has to be "governments/politics" out of contact with the public...A "steering wheel"  no longer connected to the wheels on the road...A main difference between the Dutch and the Germans is most of the time the Dutch may NOT blindly do what "authorities" tell them to do...In 1940-45 the nazi's did find out that -in that perspective-the Dutch -pften- are NOT "german"...

Yes there is a lot of frustration-in most of the west- over "leaders" ignoring/destroying public interests to create money and send it to "the rich"....Populists do "play" with that...

https://www.dutchnews.nl/2023/11/vvds-yesilgoz-says-no-but-will-prop-up-a-wilders-led-cabinet/ or https://www.dutchnews.nl/2023/11/vvds-yesilgoz-says-no-but-will-prop-up-a-wilders-led-cabinet/ ;

The VVD will not be in the next cabinet because of its major losses in Wednesday’s general election, leader Dilan Yesilgöz told reporters on Friday at the start of talks on forming a new government.

“The PVV and the NSC are the big winners. After 13 years, it is appropriate for us to take a different role,” Yesilgöz said, reflecting on the 13 years the VVD led the government under the leadership of Mark Rutte. “But we will make a centre-right coalition possible and we will support constructive suggestions,” she said.

DJ, wilders/pvv now only is supported by the bbb-"farmersparty"....There may be a lot of talking...at the end wilders very likely will NOT become PM. Big comnpanies do not want this nazi as PM. There are almost daily protests against "anti-islam-ism" ...

The pvv also denying climate collapse, long CoViD, ...They are in favor of 140 km/h car driving, against tax on flying...may even claim to be willing to get NL out of the Euro and EU...

A lot of votes for the pvv are against the present political arrogance...but not in favor of the insanity the pvv/wilders is promoting...

Another problem the pvv may have to face is "who is funding" the pvv ? Israel, US anti-islam crazies, some Russian sponsors...The pvv only has one (1) member...wilders himself...

NL in crisis may be reflecting "the west" in crisis...Lots of reforms are needed...but kicking cans down the road only undermined any trust left in politics...

DJ-I did vote for a party that did not make it into parliament...so I do NOT feel represented by ANY partu in NL parliament any longer...The "gap" between "politics" and "voters" is becoming a disasterzone...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Hackett_(British_Army_officer) or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Hackett_(British_Army_officer) Once described Dutch military conscripts as "long haired, undisciplined" -however he was very impressed by the same Dutch conscripts able to read maps, speak languages and show initiative....

Most of the world is NOT "Dutch"..."Dutch" and "Deutsch" often get mixed up...The "Dutch" do have a history of trade...Germany has a much more agriculture background...

NL stayed out of World War 1 with Dutch Fokker becoming the main German aircraft supplier...DJ-One of hitlers biggest mistakes was invading NL. As a "neutral" country NL very likely would have been a major trading place for nazi-germany...(so NL identity is NOT always good !)....Over 40,000 Dutch joined the nazi-army...Did fight in the Soviet Union "against Bolsjewism"...

A lot of fascists have a catholic background-however MOST catholics are NOT fascists...The pvv-wilders did get a lot of support from the south of NL...once a catholic part of NL.

-https://www.dutchnews.nl/2023/11/a-chilly-weekend-ahead-with-sleet-and-night-frosts-next-week/ or https://www.dutchnews.nl/2023/11/a-chilly-weekend-ahead-with-sleet-and-night-frosts-next-week/ ; The Netherlands will be hit by showers, strong winds, and chilly temperatures from Friday and there could even be sleet or snow next week, according to the Weeronline weather bureau.

DJ, Cold weather will increase worries over (extreme) high energy costs...and we could see a lot of cold weather...The "easy game" is blame solar/wind energy for rising costs...Ignoring the NATO war against Russia cutting Europe of of cheap Russian energy...The pvv/wilders very likely will play both cards....

https://www.gelderlander.nl/binnenland/coronavirus-wint-razendsnel-terrein-29-procent-meer-virusdeeltjes-in-week-tijd~ac0e1ca0/ or https://www.gelderlander.nl/binnenland/coronavirus-wint-razendsnel-terrein-29-procent-meer-virusdeeltjes-in-week-tijd~ac0e1ca0/ ; Wastewater testing, small test groups show a strong increase of CoViD cases in NL. Hospital cases still not increasing yet...

11 XDD in 6 countries now. First one for the Netherlands (Gelderland).

DJ...so energy costs pushing up even further inflation, CoViD-other diseases on the rise....frustration on present politics only will grow...

And both present politics and pvv/wilders have NO real answers...

High energy costs, shortage of staff a.o. also blocking new houses being build. There is a shortage of almost 1 million houses...and no easy answers...

pvv and other right wing parties claim "nuclear energy is also green"...putting billions into building a few nuclear powerplants in some more remote area will take years...Than you may find out uranium may be the next problem...

Environmental problems are linked to fossil fuel usage...so you have to limit airlines, cars...They both have strong lobby support so "politics" went for strict rules on farmers...It is welcome to reduce farming in NL...but it may NOT be the major problem...Fossil fuel companies/banks "support/pay" politics...The farmersparty bbb now is paid by animal-food producers and Bayer-Monsanto...And bbb no longer is a "hype"...

We could end up with parliament elections -again- in 2024 and than see what other "hype" may win a lot of votes...It is NOT getting us out of the swamp-might be dragging us into it even harder...Political "realism" has become "not done"....

In some ways NL could be an indicator for some other European country-crises....

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

In Germany-Berlin another LEFT wing demonstration against NATO and war...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fscjKng4FIo&t=228s or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fscjKng4FIo&t=228s Sahra Wagenknecht managing to get wide support for MORE money to public health. housing, transport, education etc...LESS money to a "war industry gone out of control"...

DJ Also in NL "old" left is very critical over NATO, EU...somehow "new left" (like tony blair new labour) is not "left"....The pvv did use the room "left" parties ignored...

So with the neo-liberal "vvd" claiming not willing to join wilders/pvv DJ-another option could open;

-pvv/wilders knows he has to make a lot of compromises

-Lots of "social matters" in the pvv-"plan" are "old left wing"...

-Maybe "backdoor"talks with NSC and PvdA/GL on finding some common interests ?

-----

The pvv has to give up being anti-Islam...however "limiting ALL religion" tax rules etc may be "open"???

wilders may have decided to stay in parliament...another (very likely NOT pvv) person as PM

"new left" supported NATO moving east, causing the Ukraine war, pvv is very pro-Israel...both could try to become anti war (industry)...

For New Social Contract/Omtzigt it would be a "victory" if they could get a pvv-nsc-PvdA/GL cabinet...The main goal of NSC is reform of the NL political system...

-------------

The Gaza-genocide is bringing lots of protests in NL...A "political elite" is supporting still sending spare parts for F35's to Israel (a.o.)...The Ukraine war/sanctions against Russia did cause high inflation in NL...

Altough "media" still go for Ukraine (and Israeli) propaganda "alternative media" make clear NATO is part of the problem...

If you want less refugees here-stop wars there !  People in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Ukraine are killed for western goals...

-We may have to wait and see how Wagenknecht in Germany may change politics...

https://www.dw.com/en/germany-last-generation-activists-blockade-berlin-streets/a-67552555 or https://www.dw.com/en/germany-last-generation-activists-blockade-berlin-streets/a-67552555 Climate protests in most countries underline lack of trust in ALL politics...In Germany the "green party" betrayed their voters by becoming a bunch of crazy war mongers...

https://www.dw.com/en/germany-grapples-with-its-debt-brake/a-67551491 or https://www.dw.com/en/germany-grapples-with-its-debt-brake/a-67551491 The German "government" wanted to use reserves for dealing with economic damage from the pandemic for "green goals"...Those reserves were NOT meant to be used that way German court decided...

So the present German "government-gang" may have NO money for most "green idea's" (cheaper/better public transport was one of them-very welcome !) but ends up with spending tens-of-billions on weapons (for Ukraine)...

Since Germany is a federal state there soon may be elections in a member state...If Wagenknecht manages to get a lot of votes from both AfD and "old left wing" (betrayed by present new left) it may wake up "the left" in NL. It could also warn wilders/pvv to use the chance now or lose that chance for ever...

If pvv would show itself as anti-war, pro-public services "old left wing" may be able to get NL "left" in the more progressive direction...

The leaders of two parties that could form a right-wing coalition with the far right PVV have both expressed their surprise at party leader Geert Wilder’s backing for an anti-refugee protest on Tuesday evening.

Wilders paid a lightning visit to the protest at the seaside resort of Kijkduin, where up to 120 asylum seekers are being housed in a hotel. The asylum seekers were placed there at the weekend because of the shortage of beds at the Ter Apel reception centre.

Wilders, who did not go into the information evening organised by The Hague city council because of “security concerns”, told reporters outside he was there to “give a boost” to the protestors.

He said he often attended similar gatherings in towns and villages that are being “flooded” by asylum seekers who live in “rooms with big televisions, swimming pools, free food and drink and heating, which many Dutch people don’t have.”

DJ, wilders does NOT want pvv in any government...claim he is kept out...hoping it will bring more votes...I think he has NO room for this kind of stupidity...In regional elections https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Dutch_provincial_elections or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Dutch_provincial_elections march 15 2023 the "farmersparty" did get 19,19% of the votes, pvv only 5,76%... Most parties will welcome new parliament elections in 2024 expecting pvv will see lots of it support vanish...

Pieter Omtzigt, the former Christian Democrat MP whose new party Nieuw Sociaal Contract won 20 seats in last week’s election, has said he is not yet ready to start talks on forming a new cabinet.

Omtzigt’s support is crucial in forming a right-wing coalition with the far-right PVV, together with the pro-countryside BBB and possibly the VVD. However, he told Ronald Plasterk, who has been charged with carrying out initial coalition talks, that he was not ready to discuss forming either a majority or a minority cabinet.

Instead, he said, Plasterk should focus on what the policies of the parties are to deal with the “big problems facing the Netherlands”, which range he said “from bad governance to financial security and from migration to housing.”

Omtzigt also said that he still has issues with an alliance with the PVV and the party must first make it clear what leader Geert Wilders meant when he said some parts of the manifesto could be “put on ice”.

Wilders told Nieuwsuur during the campaign he was prepared to put the policies that have defined his party for 25 years into cold storage, such as a ban on the Qur’an, a referendum on Nexit and closing Islamic schools.

Omtzigt has said repeatedly that he cannot support parts of Wilders’ policy which he considers to be undemocratic, and this remains a problem, he reiterated on Wednesday.

DJ, in the news also a story "Muslims would have voted for wilders"; statistics on neighbourhoods with a larger Muslim population do not indicate that. However third generation immigrant background-in fact in many ways "Dutch"-may have supported the pvv more than their parents...Also Suriname, NL Antilles background may have supported pvv at the same level of the NL population.

-Omtzigt/NSC is trying to focus on solving problems...He may try to get a cabinet with some distance from present political parties. His idea of trying to get different majorities for different solutions/problems may not be very realistic. He could try to get e "center-left" majority on housing, a "center right" majority on energy...

-The neo-liberal vvd is split. Part of the problem is pvv has 20 new MP's -almost non of them have any experience in politics...

UK economic stagnation. Netherlands election creates tension in Britain

-

,

Food inflation in the Netherlands remains high, with prices for groceries some 7.3% up on November 2022, national statistics agency CBS said in a flash forecast on Thursday.

Nevertheless, food inflation is slowing, the figures show. In October food prices were 8.7% higher, and in September 10%.

Taking energy prices into account, inflation is 1.6%, the CBS said. This is up on October, when the consumer price index showed prices fell by -0.4% in the last year.

Price movements for energy have a major impact on the inflation figures, and excluding energy prices would put the November inflation rate at 4.1%. The CBS will publish updated figures on December 12.

Victims of the childcare benefits scandal together: 'Working on trust'

ARNHEM - The childcare benefits scandal has countless faces. The face of 17-year-old Gijs-Paul van Groenestein from Arnhem is just one of them. A face that saw how his parents were weighed down by the affair, there was no longer expensive meat on the table and his shoes no longer came from Nike, but from Scapino. In the end, Gijs-Paul was removed from his home and lost all confidence. And trust was the goal of a special day in Arnhem on Saturday.
"Daycare, fraud, no money, that's it", is how Gijs-Paul describes the childcare benefits scandal in an ultra-succinct way. "We had to pay back and all of a sudden there was no money left. We could no longer take out subscriptions and no longer order anything from the Wehkamp. I used to be in sports and we ate meat, but then I didn't."
So the impact was big for the family. To make matters worse, Gijs-Paul's mother became ill and his father became incapacitated for work. And as if all that wasn't bad enough, Gijs-Paul was placed out of the house.
"Certain things" from that time still haunt the teenager a few years later. So it's no wonder that Gijs-Paul's trust in society dropped to freezing point.
Restoring that trust, that's what it was all about on Saturday during a day for children who became victims of the childcare benefits scandal. Arnhem alone has 799 recognised victims. These families have a total of 1053 children. "We want to find young people like Gijs-Paul, because sometimes they disappear from the radar," says youth worker Nabil Elberkani of the Local Expertise Team. "The goal is to build a relationship of trust and, above all, to help them move forward."

DJ, the neo-liberal vvd -rutte- government ruined many households in NL.

Not only via tax-benefits, also treating people in social security (including those with chronc disease, Long CoViD) as criminals...Gas exploration was more important in the north of NL than people living there...

DJ-Most people in NL are totally fed up with present "politics"...a very major problem-and in lots of countries-"politics tend to become a uni-party"...it does not matter wich party you vote...you end up with criminal politics anyway...

https://nltimes.nl/2023/12/16/state-commission-discrimination-occurs-everywhere-netherlands or https://nltimes.nl/2023/12/16/state-commission-discrimination-occurs-everywhere-netherlands ; Discrimination is everywhere in the Netherlands, and not only isolated incidents but structural forms of discrimination which transcend stages of life, generations, and sectors. It results in people dealing with discrimination in school and also later in their job, concluded the State Commission against Discrimination and Racism based on existing reports and conversations that researchers had with experienced specialists and other stakeholders in different sectors.

DJ, more findings (after a.o. the UN, Amnesty International) to ignore by a political elite getting more and more isolated...

Angry farmers set fires on highways

Several groups of angry farmers set fire to a number of highways in Gelderland on Monday evening. On the A50, near Apeldoorn, a large fire raged in the central reservation and on the road surface.
Footage shows how trailers full of wood, tyres and other rubbish have been emptied on the verge of the A50 and set on fire. Fireworks have also been set off. Some burning parts lay on the road, where trucks and passenger cars rushed past.
According to a correspondent, there were about 150 tractors on and along the A50.

Multiple protest fires

The A50 is not the only place where there was a fire along or on the motorway. Farmers also lit a large protest fire on the A28 at the 't Harde exit and a motorway fire raged further on near Nijkerk.
Fires were set in several places on the A15 and protesting farmers stood along two slip roads of the A12 near De Klomp.

DJ, "politics" protecting airlines, car/fossil fuel lobby and try to make farmers pay....

I think the policy is unbalanced...NL is the 5th largest food-exporter in the world...and that is "a lot"....

From a public health point of view we should decrease the number of farm animals...maybe by over 50%...BUT you have to talk with the farmers !!!!

We are moving towards a global food-shortage so we NEED !!!! farmers !!!!!! They have knowledge on water management, clever ways to produce food...

We need to DECREASE the air-transport sector...politics however is increasing air travel, we have a record number of cars (9,5 million !!! on a population just under 18 million) on the road while public transport is in a (man made) crisis...Almost daily a person riding an (e)-bike is getting killed in traffic...

https://www.dutchnews.nl/2024/02/coalition-talks-continue-as-february-report-back-deadline-nears/ or https://www.dutchnews.nl/2024/02/coalition-talks-continue-as-february-report-back-deadline-nears/ ;

The formation process has been ongoing for over two months with little obvious progress and parliament is supposed to debate the situation before the February 16 spring recess.

DJ, the anti-islam neo-fascist "pvv" may get 50-out of the 150- seats in the "second chamber"-parliament..according to a latest poll...

Trust in politics is gone...

https://www.dutchnews.nl/2024/02/in-the-netherlands-you-can-just-be-yourself-do-what-you-want/ or https://www.dutchnews.nl/2024/02/in-the-netherlands-you-can-just-be-yourself-do-what-you-want/ ...however in NL so far "political disagreements" only result in limited "political tensions"...Most cities are "left wing"...the sub-urban (often richer) areas are more right wing...There may still be some links between education and political views but higher education no longer translates in being more left wing...(maybe in the older age groups one may see such a link)....

There is "limited" discussion on conscription/increasing the military...shortage on the job-"market" does not leave much room...Unemployment is increasing but still "low"...long CoViD however IS a problem...(ignored...). Inflation last month was 3,2% (year-to-year)....in general salaries increased but do not fully cover the inflation of the last two years...

Switching from fossil fuel to renewable-electricity means a lot of building projects are further delayed...with also water and traffic-problems getting worse...

However...NL is still "rich"...for most people here a good place to be...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

Government failings have crushed people’s lives and the same thing could happen again unless officials fundamentally change the way they look at people’s constitutional rights, according to the formal report on the childcare benefit scandal

DJ....maybe this -in short- can be seen as a summary of how "western politics" has failed-is failing and keeps failing...Here in NL the health minister did see his job as minister as "a position in between (real) jobs"..."Our" PM...mark rutte is doing all he can to become the next secretary general of NATO....

 • Tens of thousands of parents were accused of fraud
 • Dual nationality was considered a risk factor
 • Government acted illegally and MPs and press created a hype
 • The human touch should be brought back into dealings with the public

“The powers that be were blind to the consequences of policies and decision-making,” the commission, chaired by Socialist party MP Michiel van Nispen said in the 500-page report. “They were blind to people, blind to justice and blind to people’s rights. A government that does not see people loses trust.”

Tens of thousands of Dutch parents were incorrectly accused of fraud and unjustly ordered to pay back thousands of euros in childcare benefit by the Dutch tax office. Between 2004 and 2019, parents had their childcare benefits stopped and were ordered to repay every penny ever received, sometimes due to the smallest mistakes.

Over 1,600 children whose parents were caught up in the scandal were removed from their homes by social workers. Marriages broke up and people lost their homes. The tax office also admitted that 11,000 people were subjected to extra scrutiny because they had dual nationality.

Many were labeled fraudsters, and their details shared across government departments, with devastating consequences for their financial, personal and children’s well-being. The scandal led to the collapse of the government in 2021 but has still not been properly resolved, and thousands of people are still waiting for compensation.

Failed

“The cabinet and parliament failed, government services acted illegally and the legal system fell short,” the report said. “People’s constitutional rights were infringed and the rule of law was ignored in a hardened political and social climate. And because of this, people’s lives were ruined.”

Nationality was registered as a “risk factor” in multiple government services, in contravention of equal opportunity rules, the report said. “The government presented itself as the opponent of the ordinary citizen,” Van Nispen said at the presentation in front of an audience of campaigners and families. “And the shocking thing is, this is no longer considered shocking.”

The patterns which led to the scandal are still there and the next scandal can happen at any moment, the commission said. The recommendations are not new, but nothing so far has been done. “That makes the lack of action even more serious,” the commission said. Some of the mistakes, it said, date back 20 years

MPs also failed because they voted in favour of bad laws and did not try to rectify problems.

DJ..on the "media";

Journalists and MPs brought out the worst in each other by encouraging tougher policy. Giant headlines in the newspapers spoke of fraud and there was a “disproportionate response” to problems with the social security system, particularly when people with ethnic minority roots are concerned.

The report also looked at the so-called “Bulgarian fraud” of 2013, in which it was claimed Bulgarian criminal gangs arranged for people to travel to the Netherlands and register as residents so they could claim healthcare and housing benefits.

Media hype

The press, the report said, parroted each other and created a hype, when the reality was far more nuanced. The furore around the Bulgarian fraud was seen as one of the reasons the tax office and other institutions started to take a more aggressive stance towards perceived benefit fraud by non-Dutch citizens.

The commission said the budget of the privacy watchdog AP should be boosted to €100 million to help it perform its job. The conditions for legal aid should be widened and the human touch should be brought back to points of contact between government officials and the ordinary citizen.

MPs should also be given more support to do their job in making laws and controlling the way they are applied.

The report also slammed the Council of State, the highest administrative court in the Netherlands, which it said continued to approve the “all or nothing approach”, even when the disastrous consequences had become known. The court apologised to parents in 2021.

DJ..the "rule of law" failed because of bad laws not being corrected...even civil servants did see the law was bad-but were silenced...lost their job...

https://www.dutchnews.nl/2024/02/uns-top-court-declines-to-rule-on-mh17/ or https://www.dutchnews.nl/2024/02/uns-top-court-declines-to-rule-on-mh17/ ;

The International Court of Justice on Wednesday rejected a request from Ukraine to hold Russia culpable for the downing of Flight MH17, finding the terrorism convention under which Kyiv brought the case only covers monetary support.

Ukraine filed a complaint with the Hague-based court in 2017, accusing Moscow of violating international law by supporting separatists and annexing the Crimean Peninsula.

However, judges at the United Nations’ highest court faulted Russia for only minor violations of the two international treaties at stake: the International Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism, or ICSFT, and the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, CERD.

DJ, my view; Ukraine did shoot down the MH17 flight...however it did NOT fit in the NATO story...(or was it even a NATO plan ???) So Russia was blamed for it...One of the reasons why NL did spend billions on "supporting Ukraine"....NL did send parts for F35's to "israel" until court stopped that...

I am anti-war...but no major party in NL politics shows tself able to even ask critical questions on NATO wars any longer...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

Dutch Diplomat Angelique Eijpe resigns in protest of Dutch government's Gaza policy

Some civil servants in the US and Europe are taking a stand against their governments' support for Israel's war in Gaza. Several have resigned because they no longer feel able to implement government policies they disagreed with. One Dutch diplomat tells Al Jazeera why she made the decision.

DJ...I did see this video "by accident" on YouTube...I did know there were civil servants protesting against the west being a partner in genocide...However high ranking NL diplomats resigning should deserve more attention...

The resignation is part of the story...NL/western media ignoring it...is the other part of the scandal...

Again...Dutch politics -from left to right- simply ignoring NATO supporting genocide (as long as rutte can get his NATO job ?) is "shocking"...
