This week I'm determined to address our fuel situation. Our eldest child has started driving and I've persuaded him about the need to top up his car when the tank reaches the half empty mark, which is what my husband and I do. But I want to take a stock check of what fuel we store on site and I want to implement a better rotation system. We do store diesel (for the tractor and the pick up) and a small amount of 91 unleaded for the ride on lawnmower and the other cars (in an emergency). We do have a small generator that runs on 91 as well. The problem is it's not a safe item to store and it does go off quickly. Any suggestions? what does everyone else do? Personally I think fuel is the number 1 thing that people will miss in an emergency. It'll be the first thing to be rationed by the local authorities and the first thing that we'll all run out of. |

Speaking of fuel, I just bought a new hybrid car. Only a week old. I barely drive anywhere anyways- so I figure a tank of gas will last me a long, long time. I did fill it up at the tune of $40. |

We got a hybrid car a couple of months ago and it's great. We get about an extra 300km per tank from it's hybrid self charging so it's really economical. Last month I bought a handful of rechargeable night lights that are plugged in at all times and if the power goes out, they light up and you can then pick them up from their plugged in base and use them as a torch while you scramble around looking for candles and matches. They were only cheap, about $17 each and I have two upstairs (one on the landing) and 3 downstairs. We have thick curtains so if the power goes out there's no moonlight coming in and we're plunged into total darkness. |

We're going into winter here and I planted our winter veg about 2 months ago and it's looking good. This weekend I'm planting up cut and come again lettuce and mesclun in our small green house and weeding the next big raised bed to plant another lot of winter veg. We're still splitting firewood and now I need to fill the next bay in the woodshed. it's never ending! |

First batch of a 'golden dandelion marmalade' made (lots of dandelion flowers in a lemon and lime marmalade). I need to make a couple more batches to last me the year. As I was sampling the first batch this morning I realised that because of the strong taste I use much less of this than the regular marmalade I make. So note to self: if sugar supply is getting low a lemon and lime marmalade will make it go further. |

Edwin have you tried dandelion flower heads fried in butter? They taste exactly like mushrooms. |

I will have to try that! These early crops (together with 'wild' chives in our garden, which are growing in moss by a pond) gives one hope that with spring not only is life returning but also sources of food. |
