As per 9 December 2021, 785 cases of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron have been registered in Denmark.

· 1.2% of cases hospitalized

· 0.3% ICU

· 0% deaths.

 · 83% fully / booster vaxed, 14% not

· 4.3% had previous SARS-CoV-2

· 91% have no travel history, 9% reported travel

It is of concern that 83% of cases occurred in fully or booster-vaccinated people. Whether this observation is an artefact as the major superspreading events and subsequent chains of transmission have occurred primarily in young adults, and not yet spread to children, who have not been vaccinated, is still too early to say.

The high proportion of fully vaccinated Omicron cases is a concern, the implications are still being described. It is too early to draw conclusions on the severity of Omicron compared to previous SARS-CoV-2 variants, analyses on this are ongoing.

DJ, I think vaccines did buy us time....Statistics indicate boosters - so far- would protect to some level-against severe disease even with Omicron. But I also get the impression there are limits to what to expect from vaccines/boosters....The need to combine them with NPI/restrictions being ignored "to save the economy".....

I do not have the Danish statistics-but I do not think 83% of all Danes did get fully vaccinated& boosters...so the statistics may hint that more vulnerables do not get enough protection from boosters to keep them out of hospital.

The major problem soon will be capacities running out. In many countries testing capacity shows to be to limited...soon also healthcare capacity will be unable to deal with the number of patients...(with lots of HCW-ers getting ill-London-UK was 25% going to 33% this weekend...).

I do NOT see-yet-Omicron spreading MORE in the vaccinated....(but who am I.....).

Omicron being "mild" another false "hopium" story-stopping restrictions being taken in time....False optimism kills !

The SA Omnicron early assessment study seems to validate the Danish data presented here in relation to severity of Omnicron.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/weekly-trends/#weekly_table or https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/weekly-trends/#weekly_table  Denmark cases +46 % (last week 47,921 cases, last 7 days 69,911 new cases...) deaths +9% 65 last week, 71 this week.

https://twitter.com/MadsAlbertsen85 or https://twitter.com/MadsAlbertsen85 following DK/DenmarK developments ; #Omicron update from Denmark. 47% of cases were Omicron on the 15th (5-day lag now). Test capacity has been maxed out and DK is adjusting strategy. From now on the key metric is the number of hospitalizations. Using the number of cases as an early indicator is not possible.

DJ; Still a lot of discussion-now idea Omicron could be milder then Delta (but it is not replacing Delta ?) but SA situation much different the that of NW Europe, North America due to age, winter, level of vaccinations, healthcare capacity, sub-variants (of both Omicron and Delta), how NPI/restrictions can work out....Israel cases +44%, deaths -43% may also give some insight on global picture (but Israel population much younger then NW European/North America (Canada/US). Israel public healthcare may be better then some parts of Europe/America(s)....

Yeah I question that Omnicron is displacing Delta at the rates that the CDC claims. In 3 weeks it went from 1% of cases to 73% of cases in the US??? It took delta 3 and a half months to become the dominant strain.
