This is an interesting article in today's paper saying that about one third of so called Covid hospitalizations were actually admitted for other reasons and simply found to have Covid once there. The worry is that by reporting them as Covid patients, it inflates numbers and makes the situation look worse than it is, and that the government may make decisions based on this inaccurate information. It seems to be yet another example of the public not being trusted with the truth. This kind of doom mongering only causes unnecessary stress, fear and anxiety and treats as if they are children. |

So the "dailymail" suggestion would be NOT to count them as people with CoViD ? Eventhough they test positive for it ? Strange view, "media" doing a bad job only because they are against restrictions while hospitals are collapsing...."garbage reporting"! |

The way I read it was that they are claiming that x number of people have been hospitalised because of Covid, when the truth of it seems to be that x-30% have been hospitalised because of covid, and the 30% have been hospitalized with Covid. There is a difference, and it is misleading. I also read something that said that if you go to a UK hospital without Covid, the chances are now that you will contract it while you're there as they are testing for Covid once you're on the ward, so people are being admitted with something like a broken hip, and then are found to incidentally have Covid (but may be asymptomatic) and are unwittingly spreading it to the rest of the ward before they are found to have it. Did you also read this morning that the UK government reckon that about 40% of NHS staff in London are not reporting to work each day at the moment because they either have tested positive or they are home isolating because of known contact with a Covid person. I think this shortage of staff will be the final straw for the NHS. How can they possibly man the beds on a skeleton staff? It's a sort of terrible catch 22 situation. |

KiwiMum both asymptomatic spread as hospital spread with Omicron likel will worsen a lot....the coming weeks. https://inews.co.uk/news/politics/nhs-england-makes-plans-for-field-hospitals-in-preparation-for-wave-of-omicron-covid-cases-1365680/amp?s=09 or https://inews.co.uk/news/politics/nhs-england-makes-plans-for-field-hospitals-in-preparation-for-wave-of-omicron-covid-cases-1365680/amp?s=09 are disastermanagement/"panic control".... Staff was allready a major problem ( in many countries) before Christmas....And yes-since CoViD/Omicron is that widespread the limited number of people getting into hospital not for CoViD will likely increasingly test positive for CoViD.....(and for that reason should be in the CoViD statistics...). Here in NL a growing number of HCW-ers getting ill early 2020-long CoViD face social insurence ends their sick pay early 2022, teachers may be next....Making that sort of high risk jobs even less acceptable.... https://nltimes.nl/2021/12/27/medical-experts-concerned-operations-cancelled-due-omicron or https://nltimes.nl/2021/12/27/medical-experts-concerned-operations-cancelled-due-omicron is also a growing problem...also in lots of countries. Growing questions on the (limited) use of vaccinations (proberbly still giving protection against severe disease for most), vaccination rules will further increase "social frustrations"...What happened with nasal-spray vaccinations ? Maybe less risks ? It means thousands of those who are being counted as Covid admissions – which would suggest they are severely ill with the condition – are not actually suffering seriously with the virus. Many only tested positive once they were on wards – and may have simply caught the virus while there. It has raised concerns that the headline statistics – which drive Government decisions on restrictions and lockdowns – are overestimating how many people are dangerously sick with Covid. DJ-YES the daily mail may be correct people did not end up in hospital due to CoViD....But is the "d.m." only worried about more restrictions ? NHS has never been this close to "total collapse".... Just so I have this clear in my own mind...the Govt has relentlessly pushed the narrative of no need for more restrictions and yet the NHS is building makeshift field hospitals in its car parks You do not switch to make-shift field hospitals if "normal" hospitals were able to do the job..... |

I think staffing problems in health services is a universal problem. Over here we only have a handful of cases, with about 40 people in hospital and yet still the hospitals are saying they are understaffed. Last week the government here put up $630 million for new icu beds and facilities and yet in the business section of the paper were representatives from various hospitals and nursing unions saying that they didn't have enough qualified ICU nurses to properly man the existing beds, and what they needed was more staff not more beds. When will governments realise that they need to start paying nurses a salary commensurate with their qualifications, responsibility and experience? Considering that nurses today need a degree in nursing, they should be paid a graduate wage plus extra for the anti social hours and stress that they have to deal with, not to mention danger money. They get paid less than road workers. Why? Because all industries that have been traditionally female dominant get paid less. It's shameful. |
