May be needing to change our name back again... H5N1 which is outbreaking across Europe birds, causing mass culls has made a jump into humans with first human case ever recorded in UK today. Previous human cases and small clusters have mainly occured in Asia in poultry farm and wet market workers. It is considered highly pathogenic an average CFR 56% , though some countries it can be fatal in over 80% of cases. UK say no evidence of human to human transmission though contacts have been isolated and WHO informed. (Problem is it has a 7 day incubation time) US have always stockpiled vaccines against this virus as this was always their main concern, a pandemic of H5N1. Most of Europe have no such stockpile. Individual had close contact with infected birds, hope over next few days we dont see human to human transmission. Hold onto your butts (Jurassic Park) UK security agency quote Currently there is no evidence that this strain detected in the UK can spread from person to person, but we know that viruses evolve all the time and we continue to monitor the situation closely. "We have followed up all of this individual's contacts and have not identified any onward spread https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-59896821.amp https://www.cdc.gov/flu/avianflu/h5n1-people.htm Hz x |

Its bad news Josh.... and next few days are crucial. We are literally balancing on a seesaw above a pool of sharks....we have highly pathogenic H5N1 in a human who has been walking around for 7 days. Within a few days we should know There is too much of it around in the bird flocks. Its normally bird to pig then pig to human then human to human. Not bird to human. Hopefully not adapted for human to human or we are in deep trouble. Hz x |

What would happen if the person with H5N1 also has Omicron or the flu? Can they combine? That would be a disaster. |

Just trying to understand it...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Influenza_A_virus_subtype_H5N1#Genetic_structure_and_related_subtypes or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Influenza_A_virus_subtype_H5N1#Genetic_structure_and_related_subtypes ; H5N1 is a subtype of the species Influenza A virus of the genus Alphainfluenzavirus of the family Orthomyxoviridae. Like all other influenza A subtypes, the H5N1 subtype is an RNA virus. It has a segmented genome of eight negative sense, single-strands of RNA, abbreviated as PB2, PB1, PA, HA, NP, NA, MP and NS. DJ On a viral level-translated to "my understanding" Omicron mixing with H5N1 would be like an elephant and a bear having kids ? But since I think "a host" (it does not have to be a human one, there was a fox with H5N1 a.o.) can get both H5N1 and a form of CoViD "recombination accidents" may be possible ? (Ending up with a "bealephant"? bear-elephant mix-but on viral level...) Virusses need a host for reproduction-that is why they are "on the edge of life"-most creatures can reproduce inside their own species. And it is the viral mixing in host-cells that may be an extra risk... Of course H5N1 ending up in a human hosts-directly from a bird-is "very unusual" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Influenza_A_virus_subtype_H5N1#Epidemiology or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Influenza_A_virus_subtype_H5N1#Epidemiology the UK..Europe never had a H5N1 human infection... |

Some other links/thoughts; -Did H5N1 change-more transmissable ? Is it easier for hosts to catch H5N1 from infected birds/droppings etc ? -H5N1 virus may not likely recombine with CoViD but this news https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/south-america/seasonal-flu-2009-2013-1-2-including-h1n1-pandemic-2009-aa/brazil/934118-brazil-health-investigates-deaths-from-hemorrhage-of-patients-with-flu-syndrome-in-camet%C3%A1 or https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/south-america/seasonal-flu-2009-2013-1-2-including-h1n1-pandemic-2009-aa/brazil/934118-brazil-health-investigates-deaths-from-hemorrhage-of-patients-with-flu-syndrome-in-camet%C3%A1 of possible mix of H3N2 with (some form of) CoViD is alarming... https://www.coronaheadsup.com/europe/uk/uk-first-human-case-of-h5-bird-flu-found-in-south-west-england-h5n1-not-confirmed/ or https://www.coronaheadsup.com/europe/uk/uk-first-human-case-of-h5-bird-flu-found-in-south-west-england-h5n1-not-confirmed/ ; The first man in Britain to catch the H5N1 strain of bird flu is a 79-year-old former railway worker who kept 20 Muscovy ducks INSIDE his home after befriending a flock of 160 which lived in nearby Devon river Britain’s ‘patient zero’, Alan Gosling, a 79-year-old grandfather living in Devon, caught the virus from l160 Muscovy ducks living in his home in Buckfastleigh. He befriended them over a number of years, his family say. The former railway worker is the first ever human case of H5N1 recorded in the UK. The H5N1 virus can kill up to half of the people it infects. - There is no bird flu vaccineThe seasonal flu vaccine doesn’t protect against bird flu. Related: CDC – Highly Pathogenic Asian Avian Influenza A(H5N1) in PeopleMore than 700 human infections with Asian HPAI H5N1 viruses have been reported to WHO from primarily 15 countries in Asia, Africa, the Pacific, Europe and the Near East since November 2003. Indonesia, Vietnam and Egypt have reported the highest number of human HPAI Asian H5N1 cases to date In the majority of cases, people got HPAI Asian H5N1 virus infection after direct or close contact with sick or dead poultry that were infected with the virus. Other risk factors include visiting a live poultry market and having prolonged, unprotected close contact with patients infected with HPAI Asian H5N1.. For some HPAI Asian H5N1 cases, the source of exposure is unknown. The timing of many human cases of HPAI Asian H5N1 has corresponded to the seasonality of HPAI Asian H5N1 virus outbreaks among poultry. Poultry outbreaks occur more often during relatively cooler periods found in months at the beginning and end of the year. However, human cases can occur at any time, especially in countries where HPAI Asian H5N1 is endemic in poultry. Currently, HPAI Asian H5N1 virus is considered endemic in poultry in six countries (Bangladesh, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, and Vietnam), although other counties have experienced poultry outbreaks. Clusters of human Asian HPAI H5N1 cases, (usually 2 cases but ranging from 2-8 cases per cluster), have been identified in several countries. Nearly all of the cluster cases have occurred among blood-related family members, especially those living in the same household. Whether such infections are related to genetic or other factors is currently unknown. While most people in these clusters have been infected with Asian HPAI H5N1 virus through common source exposures such as direct or close contact with sick or dead poultry or wild birds, limited non-sustained human-to-human transmission of Asian HPAI H5N1 virus cannot be excluded and likely occurred in some clusters. In cases where limited human-to-human transmission of Asian HPAI H5N1 virus is thought to have occurred, spread has occurred after a very long period of unprotected close contact (hours in length) with a very sick blood-related family member (e.g., mother-daughter or brother-brother). This has been reported to have occurred in a home and in a hospital room. DJ So very likely H5N1 in the UK may stay limited...but if the H5N1 is more transmissable we may have a global problem ! |

I can see how easily bird flu can transmit to people because I keep chickens. Anyone who keeps captive birds in a free range environment will know that wild birds like sparrows interract with them all the time, so it would be impossible to keep your birds away from wild ones and any illnesses they carry. And bird droppings do not hold their structure but once dry they fracture and powder very easily, so when you clean out your bird house, there is a lot of dust and it's all powdered feces. I know for years old men who kept pigeons were struck down with pigeon lung and short of wearing an excellent mask, you will breathe in that dust and I suppose it could cause a respiratory illness. |
