For the first time temperatures of 40°C have been forecast in the UK and the Met Office has issued the first ever Red warning for exceptional heat.

Exceptional heat is expected to affect a large part of England early next week, with temperatures likely in the high 30s C in some places and perhaps even reaching 40°C.

DJ Again-those temperatures can KILL !!!!

The Red Extreme heat national severe weather warning will cover Monday and Tuesday (18th and 19th July) for parts of central, northern, eastern and southeastern England. An Amber Extreme heat warning, has been in place for much of England and Wales for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday (17th – 19thJuly) since earlier this week. Today the amber areas are also being extended to cover Cornwall, west Wales and parts of southern Scotland.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Paul Gundersen, said “Exceptional, perhaps record-breaking temperatures are likely early next week, quite widely across the red warning area on Monday, and focussed a little more east and north on Tuesday. Currently there is a 50% chance we could see temperatures top 40°C and 80% we will see a new maximum temperature reached.

“Nights are also likely to be exceptionally warm, especially in urban areas. This is likely to lead to widespread impacts on people and infrastructure. Therefore, it is important people plan for the heat and consider changing their routines. This level of heat can have adverse health effects.”

The step up in warning level to red is running parallel to an increase in the current Heat Health Warning to Level 4 for England by the UK Health Security Agency.

Current watch level: Level 4 - Emergency

Issued at:

There is a 100 % probability of Heat-Health Alert criteria being met between 0000 on Monday and 0000 on Wednesday in parts of England.

Renewed hot or very hot conditions develop across the country during this coming weekend and into the new working week, peaking on Monday and Tuesday, with some exceptional temperatures possible in places. The hottest locations are likely to be in parts of central and eastern England. This alert will be kept under daily review and updated as necessary.

An update will be issued when the alert level changes in any region. Alerts are issued once a day by 0900 if required and are not subject to amendment in between standard issue times. Note that the details of the forecast weather are valid at the time of issue but may change over the period that an alert remains in force. These details will not be updated here unless the alert level also changes, the latest forecast details can be obtained at the following link: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/forecast/#?tab=map

DJ...Most of western and southern Europe and parts of North America, Asia are dealing with extreme heat, drought, wildfires.

Even if we would go for realistic climate plans effects of it would slow down warming at best only decades later....Realism is realizing major climate disasters are on their way...the best option is try to limit damage...international cooperation...

Of course at present wars are only making climate disasters (much) worse...Arctic warfare between Nato and Russia/China may be just weeks away...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

During the ongoing heatwave that is set to peak on Tuesday, the Met Office said, there is an 80 percent chance of the mercury topping the UK’s record temperature of 38.7C (101.7F) set in Cambridge in 2019, and there is a 50 percent chance of temperatures reaching 40C somewhere in the UK.

The red warning, the first of its kind ever issued, covers an area from London up to Manchester and then up to the Vale of York, said Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge, adding: “This is potentially a very serious situation.”

Penny Endersby, Met Office chief executive, said in a sombre video shared online: “The extreme heat that we’re forecasting right now is absolutely unprecedented.”

“Stay out of the sun, keep your home cool, think about adjusting your plans for the warning period,” she said.

‘National Emergency’

The UK Health Security Agency has increased its heat health warning from level three to level four, which indicates the situation amounts to a “national emergency.”

Level four is reached “when a heatwave is so severe and/or prolonged that its effects extend outside the health and social care system… At this level, illness and death may occur among the fit and healthy, and not just in high-risk groups,” it said.

England’s chief medical officer, Professor Sir Chris Whitty, asked people on Twitter to look out for each other.

He said: “Please remember the signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke especially for older and medically vulnerable people. Early intervention to cool people down and rehydrate them can be lifesaving.”

A Number 10 spokesman said railway speed restrictions may be needed on “some parts of the network next week to manage the hot weather and to avoid any potential damage.”

Network Rail has warned people to travel only if absolutely necessary amid the high temperatures forecast on Monday and Tuesday.

Meanwhile, motorists have been advised to try to make their journeys outside of the hottest periods of the day, particularly if they have older cars.

Tim Doran, from the RNLI Water Safety Team said the service was anticipating a “busy weekend” for its lifeboat crews and lifeguards.

“If you are planning on going to the beach, we would encourage you to visit a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red and yellow flags,” he said.

Europe's ongoing heat wave will continue through the end of the month, producing record-breaking temperatures across the continent. The heatwave is beginning to curb nuclear power production in France, which could have widespread effects across European markets.

Bloomberg reports French utility Electricite de France SA (EDF) was forced to reduce power generation at three power plants this week, two on the Rhone River and another on the Garonne, after water temperatures from each respective river were too hot to circulate through condensers and discharge back into waterways because superheated water would cause environmental harm.

Restrictions on the Rhone will cut output at the Saint-Alban plant from July 20, but the facility will maintain minimum production of at least 1,300 megawatts for grid operational reasons, EDF said in a filing. That's half its usual capacity. The Tricastin and Blayais plants will each operate at a minimum level of 1,800 megawatts from July 17.

The Saint-Alban and Blayais facilities, as well as the Golfech plant, have received temporary waivers of water-discharge rules to keep them in operation during the heatwave, Les Echos reported, without giving specifics on output. The Garonne River reached 28 degrees Celsius on Thursday. -Bloomberg

France's nuclear reactor capacity was around 46% on Friday, down from 47% on Wednesday, according to data via grid operator RTE.

The implications of slumping nuclear power output for France's atomic fleet, the largest in Europe and producing 25% of all power on the continent, have been soaring electricity prices.

French week-ahead power soared 18% to 500 euros a megawatt-hour since last week -- the highest weekly close on record.

Low waterlevels in rivers do limit (if not stop) transport by ship. Since there may be quite a lot of wind wildfires may be very hard to contain-some area's may be closed to limit risks for fires.

DJ,

http://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2022/09/blue-ocean-event-2022.html or http://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2022/09/blue-ocean-event-2022.html ;

According to many, a Blue Ocean Event starts once Arctic sea ice extent falls below 1 million km².

Arctic sea ice extent was 4.912 million km² on September 6, 2022, which is larger than the extent in many previous years around this time of year (see NSIDC image below). However, the sea ice has become very thin, resulting in many areas where only small pieces of ice are present.
NSIDC regard a cell to have sea ice if it has at least 15% sea ice, but when regarding a cell to have sea ice if it has at least 50% ice and if that's the case for ⅕ of the cells where there is (some) ice, then we're already in a Blue Ocean Event right now.

So let's have another look at how much of the above 4.912 million km² can be regarded as sea ice, by using the NSIDC map with sea ice concentration as a guide.

The roughly-sketched outline drawn over the NASA map below indicates that there may only have been some 991 thousand km² of concentrated sea ice left on September 6, 2022 (inset shows NSIDC sea ice concentration for the day).

In conclusion, depending on what is counted as sea ice, we could already be experiencing a Blue Ocean Event right now.

A Blue Ocean Event constitutes the crossing of a huge tipping point and, as a strong El Niño looks set to emerge, this could trigger the unfolding of further events and developments leading to extinction of most species (including humans), as:
 1. a strong El Niño triggers:
 2. further decline of the Arctic sea ice, with loss of the latent heat buffer, combined with
 3. associated loss of sea ice albedo and
 4. destabilization of seafloor methane hydrates, causing eruption of vast amounts of methane that further speed up Arctic warming and cause
 5. rapid thawing of terrestrial permafrost, resulting in even more emissions,
 6. while the Jet Stream gets even more deformed, resulting in more extreme weather events
 7. causing forest fires, at first in Siberia and Canada and
 8. eventually also in the peat fields and tropical rain forests of the Amazon, in Africa and South-east Asia, resulting in
 9. decline of snow and ice on mountains, at first causing huge flooding, followed by
 10. drought, heatwaves and urban collapse,
 11. collapse of the Greenland and West-Antarctic ice sheets,
 12. falling away of aerosol masking as civilization grinds to a halt,
 13. further heating due to gases and particulates from wood and waste burning and biomass decomposition, and
 14. further heating due to additional gases (including water vapor), cirrus clouds, albedo changes and heat rising up from oceans.

DJ...extreme weather events, flooding, drought, superstorms are almost daily news....

The best option we may have is take the risk (also pandemic risks) serious and at least try to limit damage...

(Of course it is frustrating to see "world leaders" pushing for war...just a reminder to what politics SHOULD do-but seem to have forgotten...).
