The main problem with blowing up the dam at the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station is that Russian positions are located on the low bank of the Dnieper.

The flow of water can erode the line of defense on the coast and prevent the repulse of a potential boat landing of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Flooding downstream is actually the the smallest of the problems the destruction of the dam causes. The Novaya Kakhovka dam and the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant create a reservoir on the Dnieper River that extends all the way to Zaporozhye. If the dam is destroyed, the water level in the Kakhovka Reservoir will fall, creating three huge problems for Russia.

1. A lower water level may allow Ukraine to ford the Dnieper River and attack the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant in Energodar.
2. The Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant relies on the reservoir for its cooling water. The power plant is in a cold shutdown, but it still needs cooling for its residual heat.
3. The North Crimean Canal gets its water from the Kakhovka Reservoir. The canal was blocked by Ukraine for years, depriving Crimea of irrigation water, but unblocked by Russia after the SMO started.

To put this in perspective, the water behind the dam is the size of Rhode island.

The dam is destroyed; there’s no partial destruction of dams. The water pressure will now demolish the rest of the dam.

The flood is intensifying. This water flow has the potential energy of hundreds of millions of tons of TNT.

Kherson should be evacuated immediately.

A multi-hundred foot chunk of the Nova Kakhovka dam is gone, the Kakhovka Reservoir is quickly emptying out into the Dnipro.

That Reservoir 18 km³ of fresh water which also supplies water to the Crimean peninsula, annexed by Russia in 2014, and to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, which is also under Russian control.

Ukrainians appear to be trying to flood Russians out of defensive positions.

Ukraine threatened to blow the dam last fall…one of the reasons the Russians withdrew from Kherson after evacuating 80,000 civilians.

I believe the power this dam provides to hydroelectric plant is also critical power source to the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant cooling systems.

This could have severe implications on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station that relies on the Kakhovka reservoir.

As part of the ceasefire agreement, a three-party (Russia, Moldova, Transnistria) Joint Control Commission supervises the security arrangements in the demilitarized zone, comprising 20 localities on both sides of the river.

For the President of Moldova to openly announce she will grant permission to Ukraine to use Moldova territory to attack Transnistria, is a blatant violation of the Ceasefire Agreement and of the three-party Joint Control Commission.  This violation could simply mean the ceasefire is now over, which would not bode well for Moldova.

Moreover, Moldova's military NEUTRALITY is enshrined in its Constitution!   How the President can do something like this is utterly unimaginable!

The legacy of Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky will be turning Ukraine into “a new Afghanistan,” according to former Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov. Azarov was head of government three times and presided over Ukraine’s largest economic growth in its post-Soviet history, thus making his opinion about Zelensky’s legacy, especially scathing.

“Over the years, presidents of Ukraine made promises to turn the country into either a new France or a new Switzerland. However, Zelensky went further than anyone and turned the country into a new Afghanistan, to the delight of the Anglo-Saxons and defence companies,” Azarov wrote in a social media post.

“What do you think? Is there is a chance that Washington will get tired of its ‘toy’ in the foreseeable future? Or is the pleasure of playing dirty tricks on Russia more important than the lives of the hostages of the Kiev regime?” the politician asked on Facebook.

It is recalled that Azarov explained in an interview in early May the role played by the US and the UK in transforming Ukraine into a failed state, outlining how since the Euromaidan coup in 2014, the country’s population halved. He also characterised the current Ukrainian president as “an empty vessel” who cares more about profits and popularity abroad than the Ukrainian people, which makes him a tool of Western powers and oligarchic interests.

Further, they cannot rely on Article 5 of the NATO Treaty, since that clause can only be invoked if there is an unprovoked Russian attack on a NATO country. But when a NATO country attacks Russia, and here we have them all joining in the attack, it is the aggressor and therefore cannot claim to be are acting in self-defence. It is also important to bear in mind Article I of the NATO Treaty, since it requires NATO to act in conformity with the UN Charter. It states

A pan-Turkic offensive?

And here we enter a fascinating territory: the possible incoming interpolations between the Organization of Turkic States (OTS), the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the BRICS+ – and all that also linked to a boost in Saudi and Emirati investments in the Turkish economy.

Sultan 2.0 wants to become a full member of both the Chinese-led SCO and multipolar BRICS+. This means a much closer entente with the Russia-China strategic partnership as well as with the Arab powerhouses, which are also hopping on the BRICS+ high-speed train.

Today the Russian government revealed some numbers and information about its 'Special Military Operation'.

Today's 'clobber report' by the Ministry of Defense leads with this (machine translation):

During the day, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation carried out group strikes using long-range high-precision air-launched weapons at central decision-making points where, under the guidance of specialists from Western intelligence agencies, terrorist acts were planned on Russian territory.

All assigned objects are hit.

'Central decision-making points' are ministries and main headquarters. These had so far not been targets. More to that below.

Defense Minister Shoigu had a conference call with the military command and noted:

"Russian forces continue to inflict an effective fire impact on the enemy. Its losses this month alone totaled over 16,000 troops, 16 aircraft, 5 helicopters, 466 drones, over 400 tanks and other armored combat vehicles, and 238 field artillery pieces and mortars," Shoigu said during a conference call.

He added that 196 HIMARS rockets, 16 HARM rockets and 29 Storm Shadow long-range cruise missiles were intercepted and destroyed during the reviewed period.

The numbers are, with the exception of the downed Storm Shadows,  largely consistent with the numbers from the daily 'clobber report' in my spreadsheet. But I have only counted 17 reported Storm Shadow kills over the last month. I do not know where Shoigu's 29 is coming from.

Shoigu also spoke of targets of the recent drone attacks in Ukraine (machine translation):

“The deliveries of equipment and weapons to Ukraine are increasing. We monitor the volumes and routes of supply and, if identified, strike.

In recent days, large warehouses of Western weapons in Khmelnytsky, Ternopil and Nikolaev have been destroyed, the American Patriot anti-aircraft missile system in Kyiv has been hit,” the Minister of Defense said.

The escalation between the local authorities and the Serbs has been going on for several days in the north of Kosovo. On the evening of May 29, over 90 people were injured in street clashes.

The reason for the unrest is the elections of the heads of the municipalities of North Kosovska-Mitrovica, Zvecan, Zubin-Potok and Leposavich. In November last year, the mayors of settlements resigned in protest against the decision of the Kosovo authorities to replace Serbian license plates with national ones.

Elections of new mayors were held on April 23. However, Serbian voters boycotted them. As a result, only about 3% of voters took part in the election. Due to the lack of Serbian voter turnout, representatives of the Albanian community became mayors in all four municipalities.

The Serbs inhabiting these northern cities of the region came out to protest, not allowing the new mayors to enter the administrative buildings.

The protests, which escalated into clashes with the Kosovo police, began on Friday.

On May 29, soldiers of the North Atlantic Alliance mission KFOR were deployed around municipal buildings in three northern settlements, as well as on the bridge over the Ibar River in the town of Severna Mitrovica. In Zvecan, Leposavich and Zubin Potok, they created security zones around the buildings.

KFOR peacekeepers in the region used tear gas, rubber bullets and stun grenades against the unarmed protesters. Footage from Zvenchan confirm that the Serbs began to resist the Kosovo security forces and KFOR fighters only after the latter used stun grenades. Also, a Kosovo special forces officer opened fire on the unarmed crowd.

In total, 52 civilians were wounded during the day.

Kosovo’s Western allies officially condemned Pristina’s actions, but no action was taken to deescalate the situation. The US and the EU recognized the elections with a meager voter turnout.

In his turn, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic ordered the army to advance to the border with Kosovo.

Addressing the nation, he said that the Kosovo authorities have been trying to provoke a bloody conflict between Belgrade and NATO for several months; while KFOR peacekeepers do not protect civilians, but rather protect the “fake” mayors.

Vucic stressed that Serbia will not allow persecution, pogroms or murders in Kosovo. On the morning of May 30, he held meetings with representatives of the United States, Great Britain, Germany, France and Italy to once again urge them to calm Pristina. A meeting with the ambassadors of Russia and China was also reportedly scheduled on the same day.

Russia remains the main ally of Belgrade. The Russian Foreign Minister has warned that a large conflict is brewing in the center of Europe; where, in 1999, NATO carried out aggression against Yugoslavia in violation of international agreements. The situation is alarming, but the West has set a course for total subordination of everyone who somehow expresses their own opinion.

However, the war did not go as planned for the US or Russia. US President Joe Biden summed up his intentions succinctly: “It’s not about Ukraine. It is about Eastern Europe. It is about NATO.” This statement suggests that the US is prepared to go to any lengths to continue the war and would even welcome a nuclear response from Russia to rally the 75 per cent of nations that have refused to impose sanctions on Russia. The US wanted to reassert its dominance over Europe – as Biden stated – which was slipping away from its control. Europe – as French President Emanuel Macron declared – planned to dismantle NATO and have its army, despite the hundreds of US military bases spread across the continent since the Second World War.

When the US began supplying weapons to Ukraine, it did so based on precise battlefield needs and the effectiveness of Russian forces, as planned by the military of 50 nations at Ramstein, using all available electronic and human intelligence sources. The US claims to be directing the war from Ramstein, and US under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Victoria Nuland confirmed a few days ago to Kyiv Security Forum that her country “has been preparing for a counter-attack for four to five months.” 

This statement confirms that while blaming Ukrainian forces or Russian separatists, the US actively campaigned inside Russia, hitting multiple targets in different Russian cities. The US uses guerrilla warfare, this time through Ukrainian proxies rather than jihadists, as it did in Afghanistan in the 1980s. The aim is to humiliate Russia at home, draw it deeper into a potential quagmire on the internal and border fronts, and keep Russian forces in Ukraine as long as possible even if after 15 months, the US failed to achieve its objectives.

Why the Ukrainian leadership had decided to hold onto the city even months after the situation there was already in its disfavor is beyond me. The fight was decided by the numerical superiority of Russian artillery fire and the Ukraine had never a chance to top that.

The losses there for the Ukrainians amounted to 300 to 500 men per day over that last 5 months. That sums up to a total of 60,000 casualties. Ten days ago Ukrainian units, including the fascist Azov brigade, rolled up the Russian flanks north and south of Bakhmut to allow the Ukrainian troops in the city to flee west. That attack alone, only one or 2 kilometer deep, cost them some 1,600+ men and some 50+ armored vehicles.

On the Russian side the fighting in the city was largely done by Wagner troops. But they were never able to do it on their own. Russian military intelligence, artillery and logistics all played an important role in the fight.

The city has been destroyed but it will continued to exist as it is an important logistical hub with several rail and road connections running through it.

Mariupol, which fell/was liberated a year ago, is already being rebuild. In a month or two, when the frontline has moved away from Artyomovsk, rebuilding will start there too.

Noble Agri, a subsidiary of COFCO (China National Cereals, Oils and Foodstuffs Corporation), invested in a sunflower seed processing complex in Mariupol and the recently built Mykolaiv grain port terminal. The next step will necessarily feature cooperation between Donbass authorities and the Chinese when it comes to rebuilding their assets that may have been damaged during the war.

So what we have in Ukraine, from the Chinese point of view, is a trade/investment cocktail of BRI, railways, military supplies, 4G and construction jobs. And then, the key vector: neon.

Roughly half of neon used in the production of semiconductors was supplied, until recently, by two Ukrainian companies; Ingas in Mariupol, and Cryoin, in Odessa. There’s no business going on since the start of the Special Military Operation (SMO). That directly affects the Chinese production of semiconductors. Bets can be made that the Hegemon is not exactly losing sleep over this predicament.

Ukraine does represent value for China as a BRI crossroads. The war is interrupting not only business but, in the bigger picture, one of the trade and connectivity corridors linking Western China to Eastern Europe. BRI conditions all key decisions in Beijing – as it is the overarching concept of Chinese foreign policy way into mid-century.

And that explains Xi’s phone call, debunking any NATOstan nonsense on China finally paying attention to the warmongering actor.

As relevant as BRI is the overarching bilateral relationship dictating Beijing’s geopolitics: the Russia-China comprehensive strategic partnership.

So let’s transition to the meeting of Defense Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) earlier this week in Delhi.

The key meeting in India was between Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and his Chinese colleague Li Shangfu. Li was recently in Moscow, and was received by Putin in person for a special conversation. This time he invited Shoigu to visit Beijing, and that was promptly accepted.

Needless to add that every single player in the SCO and beyond, including nations that are for the moment just observers or dialogue partners as well as others itching to become full members, such as Saudi Arabia, paid very close attention to the Shoigu-Shangfu camaraderie.

When it comes to the profoundly strategic Central Asian “stans”, that represents the six feet under treatment for the Hegemon wishful thinking of using them in a Divide and Rule scheme pitting Russia against China.

Shoigu-Shangfu also sent a subtle message to SCO members India and Pakistan – stop bickering and in the case of Delhi, hedging your bets – and to full member (in 2023) Iran and near future member Saudi Arabia: here’s where’s it at, this the table that matters.

All of the above also points to the increasing interconnection between BRI and SCO, both under Russia-China leadership.

BRICS is essentially an economic club – complete with its own bank, the NDB – and focused on trade. It’s mostly about soft power. The SCO is focused on security. It’s about hard power. Together, these are the two key organizations that will be paving the multilateral way.

As for what will be left of Ukraine, it is already being bought by Western mega-players such as BlackRock, Cargill and Monsanto. Yet Beijing certainly does not count on being left high and dry. Stranger things have happened than a future rump Ukraine positioned as a functioning trade and connectivity BRI partner.

DJ, Ukraine has the choice of being on the end of the road or "in the middle". Ukraine can be a link between EU, Türkiye, other Asian countries...On the long term Ukraines best chances are in being a "land-bridge" not in a proxy war....

The costs of more war with Russia wil endanger needed investments to integrate Poland into the EU...Poland was supposed to be next in line to switch to the Euro/€ ...Croatia started using the € since january 1-2023. 

There are some "ideas" on integrating Poland with Ukraine...However Ukraine is destroyed...the west is moving itself into bankruptcy...

To limit damage the EU may have to look at "Asia"....It is just over 8,000 km/5,000 miles between Paris and Bejing...A train going 100 km/h would take 80 hrs of constant driving...If high speed would be available train transport between China and Europe may get under 48 hrs....

The US is also "trying to isolate China"......DJ-in short-total insanity ! 

China is the motor behind both BRICS/BRIICSS and the SCO...the outcome of the US isolating China is the US getting isolated...NOT China...

My comment: According to the Semiconductor Industry Association, in 2020 China's semiconductor sales already surpassed Taiwan's.

That was three years ago. If China has continued its 30% year-on-year growth rate, it has probably passed the EU and Japan by now. The loss of global market share in semiconductors is likely one reason for Taiwan's recession.

And the future won't improve for the little island if its hostility towards the mainland continues. Taiwan is currently leading in production of the state-of-the-art chips (5 nanometers), but mainland China is catching up fast. Last year, a Canadian firm noticed that mainland had been quietly shipping 7-nanometer chips (see China’s Top Chipmaker Achieves Breakthrough Despite US Curbs). This is still a generation behind the 5 nm level, but it is already at a higher technological level than anything shipped by Intel, meaning that it is better than the CPU chips used in 95% of the world. Furthermore, the Bloomberg article is over half a year old; who knows where China is now?

Taiwan is relying on machines from the Netherlands that use lasers blasting molten drops of tin to generate extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light. Mainland China is attempting to surpass this rather crude technique with a revolutionary new method using synchrotrons to produce the light directly. If the new technology works, mainland China will have large advantages: synchrotrons that generate more intense light beams which therefore can etch more chips per hour, leading to far cheaper chips; and far more technological head room, as the synchrotrons can be tuned to generate wavelengths below the EUV level.

So Taiwan faces loss of its technological lead, loss of nearly all of its mainland Chinese market (if it continues to obey the US's orders not to sell), and likely devastating competition from the mainland for whatever markets are left. The prospects for Taiwan are bad, to put it mildly. To be a US vassal is a good deal for the US, not for the vassal.

Thirty-three years ago, Playboy magazine asked Donald Trump what would be on his mind if he became President some day. Trump's response? The "ultimate catastrophe", nuclear war.

What would be some of President Trump’s longer-term views of the future?
I think of the future, but I refuse to paint it. Anything can happen. But I often think of nuclear war.

Nuclear war?
I’ve always thought about the issue of nuclear war; it’s a very important element in my thought process. It’s the ultimate, the ultimate catastrophe, the biggest problem this world has, and nobody’s focusing on the nuts and bolts of it. It’s a little like sickness. People don’t believe they’re going to get sick until they do. Nobody wants to talk about it. I believe the greatest of all stupidities is people’s believing it will never happen, because everybody knows how destructive it will be, so nobody uses weapons. What bullshit.

Unfortunately, our current leadership has been less concerned about nuclear war, and has increased the risk of one happening via its proxy war against Russia in the Ukraine. Media attention seems to have shifted somewhat from the war after the recent leaks suggested the tide had turned against the Ukrainians, but a recent news item highlighted the continuing risk that it could spark a nuclear war. 

DJ, The "west" does have a lot of nuclear weapons however;

-The "west" is NOT united. Four "west" countries have nuclear weapons;

US, UK, France, Israel...

-Only the US have "a lot of nuclear weapons" , the other three plan those weapons for self defense-more than a global agenda.

-But a lot of western nuclear weapons are "old and slow"....Russia has high-speed/hypersonic weapons able to evade most western radar at speeds of 8,000 to 20,000 km/h...(Close to mach 20...)

So-yes-the US may still "dream" of nuclear blackmail...reality is they may not even be able to upgrade their nuclear arsenal because "the rest" may control both basic materials and -soon- finance...

Should we expect a "nuclear show down" a "confrontation" with "the west" and the "rest" pointing nuclear weapons at each other ? 

DJ-Yes...at present-with western "leaders" showing total insanity-it may come to this....Russia/China may be working hard on electronic warfare, cyber warfare, maybe even sabotage teams to "control" the western nuclear weapons...Another scenario could be a "demonstration" of what modern (Russian) weapons can do...Maybe an unloaded hypersonic missile landing in the White House gardens -not detected by NORAD/western radar could "wake up" the present "elite"....

Again...we should not have been in this situation (like in the pandemic...)...it was avoidable (like the pandemic) an outcome of bad leadership. 

Talks could get us out of this crisis...but so far it is the "west" that is not showing any kind of "respect" to the "rest"....The "west" is the problem and may have to learn in a very hard way....
