There are hundreds of peer reviewed scientific studies on the great damage repeat Covid infections and Long Covid causes to human bodies! Millions cannot function anymore in daily tasks. No infection control in hospitals, testing is discouraged, few tests conducted.

-

Replying to
The elephant in the room which no one ever mentions is that children’s mental health can be massively affected by repeated Covid infections. Neuroinflammation releases cytokines in the brain which cause heightened levels of anxiety, depression & cognitive dysfunction.

DJ....no doubt some "politicians" will claim info on climate change, pandemics, is the main reason for mental health issues...so "stop information"....While NOT doing anything on the real issues....

In Chile, the president Gabriel Boric declared an Emergency State as forest fires continue devastating the central regions, leaving several people feared dead and destroying thousands of hectares of forestland.

RELATED:

“The situation of forest fires, especially in the 5th region, is very difficult due to the temperatures and winds… I have also decided to declare a state of emergency due to a catastrophe to have all the necessary resources,” the president said.

To combat the forest fires, Boric has has mobilized all available forces to combat the fires, with emergency services set to assess the catastrophic situation.

On the other hand, the Interior Minister, Carolina Tohá, confirmed on Saturday that at least the death of 22 people as a result of forest fires that affect the Valparaíso Region and whose emergency is centered in Viña del Mar and Quilpué.

Global "warming" means stronger wind....It could push very cold air into places not used to such cold..."populist-leaders" will come up with "there is no climate problem"...so they get more donations from fossil energy, car, aircraft industry...

During the past months, AI outbreaks have continued to be reported in domestic poultry and wild birds in Asia. In the past year, several AI virus subtypes, including H5N1, H5N2, H5N5, H5N6, H5N8, and H9N2 have been detected in domestic poultry and/or wild bird populations in the region. In addition, subtype H5N1 subclade 2.3.4.4b continues to circulate in both wild and domestic birds throughout the world.

-

Importantly, AI virus subtypes have demonstrated their zoonotic potential, i.e. the ability to transmit from birds to humans. During 2023, human cases of influenza A(H5N1) were detected in China and Cambodia, and the Americas (Ecuador and Chile), and human cases of A(H5N6) were reported in China. In 2024, two more cases of H5N1 in humans were already reported in Cambodia.

Other AI subtypes that have been detected in humans in Asia in the past year include influenza A(H3N8), A(H10N5), and A(H9N2). Most of these cases reported exposure through close contact with infected live poultry. While human infections with AI viruses remain sporadic events, they warrant attention since symptoms observed in humans range from asymptomatic to fatal.

INCREASED AVIAN INFLUENZA RISK

There is an increased risk of AI spread in Asia due to intensified in-country travel around Lunar New Year (February 2024), specifically considering the following:
• Millions of people are expected to travel for the New Year (starting early February 2024).
• The vast majority of traffic will be within countries of the Asian region, but also to and from Asia.
• Poultry trade is increasing to serve the high demand for poultry meat and other products consumed during these festivities.
• Travel and trade increase the risk of spreading AI, since the virus can be transmitted via contact with infected animals as well as contaminated clothing, vehicles and other equipment.

DJ...some studies claim a human detected case of H5N1 could indicate there may be 200 undetected ones in some countries....That could mean a lot of H5N1 could be "mild"...easy to miss...however it can pick up mutations in each mammal/human infection...

Both climate collapse and global public health may be out of control...The US/NATO going for more wars only further worsening problems...

DJ-I would love to believe "there may be a way out" of this mega-mix of crises...but war is NOT one of them....

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

DJ, With nazi-NATO via its "israel" and "ukraine" proxies fighting BRICS-extra over fossil fuel-killing thousends of humans per day we also did see another "climate conference"....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DUwmr9wcME or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DUwmr9wcME

Fossil fuels won at COP28

Another year, another climate summit. This year's meeting may have made the landmark agreement to "transition away from fossil fuels" but it was still tainted by the influence of record numbers of fossil fuel lobbyists and the blatant hand of fossil fuel companies - not least that of the COP28 President. Thanks so much again to James, follow him on X here:  https://twitter.com/JD_Kirkham

-

Contents 00:00 Intro 00:31 The headlines 01:40 The wins 03:44 The global stocktake 05:11 The scandal COP 08:34 COP is a joke 09:44 Protests 10:29 What's the alternative?

DJ, UK PM-"joke" sunak did spent more time in his private jet on the way to Dubai then he was at that conference...of course signing an agreement on deportation of refugees from the UK to Rwanda was more important...UK will increase oil and gas exploration in the North Sea...

Not only oil/gas lobby groups also meat producers did use the COP-28 to find new clients...

So any good news ?

-At least there is still a global platform discussing climate....

-For the first time fossil fuels were linked -on a political level- with climate "change"

-Some countries are even willing to put a few million into a "damage fund" in compensation their fossil fuel industry is doing to countries kept poor...

Of course the damage of climate collapse is running in the billions per year...and 2024 may be another even more extreme year...

DJ-People/politics seem only to learn the hard way there is an urgent need to make major changes...bad part of this time is running out...

Pandemics are NOT isolated events...both wars and climate collapse do increase pandemic risks...Air polution undermining human health...worsening outcome of disease and "group immunity"...

At the moment humans are killing themselves...sort of collective plastic bag over our head and "kicking" on it...If we do NOT wake up in time we should know the next step is knocking us all out...

Corrupt politics defending fossil fuel, war industry, the petro-dollar only at present make matters much worse...Like in "wars" we need political major changes...the present political parties (also from the "left")  have become part of the problem NOT offer a way out...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

The Arctic did see the warmest summer since measuring began.

https://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2023/12/double-blue-ocean-event-2024.html or https://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2023/12/double-blue-ocean-event-2024.html ;

A double Blue Ocean Event could occur in 2024. Both Antarctic sea ice and Arctic sea ice could virtually disappear in 2024. A Blue Ocean Event (BOE) occurs when sea ice extent falls to 1 million km² or less, which could occur early 2024 for Antarctic sea ice and in Summer 2024 in the Northern Hemisphere for Arctic sea ice.

Antarctic sea ice loss

The situation regarding Antarctic sea ice extent is pictured in the image below, which shows that on December 12, 2023, Antarctic sea ice extent was 9.499 million km², a record low for the time of year.

Antarctic sea ice extent was 1.788 million km² on February 21, 2023. Antarctic sea ice extent may well be much lower in February 2024, with sea ice loss fuelled by several self-reinforcing feedback loops, as discussed in an earlier post.

Arctic sea ice loss

On December 12, 2023, as said, Arctic sea ice extent was third lowest low for the time of year, i.e. only 2016 and 2020 were lower. The years 2016 and 2020 had the highest annual temperature (a tie) on record and this annual temperature record is likely to be surpassed in 2023, while 2024 may be even worse, as the chance that the current El Niño will slow down soon is minimal.

Arctic sea ice extent would have been even lower, had the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) not been slowing down. As a result of AMOC's slowing down, less ocean heat is reaching the Arctic Ocean. Instead, a huge amount of ocean heat has been accumulating in the North Atlantic and much of this heat could soon be pushed abruptly into the Arctic Ocean as storms temporarily speed up currents that carry ocean heat into the Arctic Ocean.

DJ, Polar ice is cooling the planet...If that ice (sea/land) is decreasing this fast it will further increase global temperature.

Methane release also will further increase pushing up further global temperature...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

See also CoViD out of control ? -latest news;

Upon request by a few folks in this thread, I prompted it to tell me how much time we might have left…

Timeline Estimation: Estimating a specific timeline like 5 years or a decade for human survival under these conditions is speculative.

However, without effective mitigation and in the presence of a continuously spreading lethal virus, the situation could become critical within a few years. The impact would not only be in terms of direct mortality from the virus but also from the collapse of healthcare systems, disruption of supply chains, and breakdown of societal structures.

The above image, created with Climate Reanalyzer data, shows the temperature anomaly (in °C) compared to the 1979-2000 mean. In blue are the years 1979-2022 and in black and white is the year 2023 through December 3, 2023. A trend is added in pink and white, based on 2023 data. Note that the 1979-2000 mean isn't pre-industrial, the anomaly from pre-industrial is significantly higher.

[ click on images to enlarge ]

The trend warns that temperatures could keep rising rapidly over the next few months.

DJ, Paul Beckwith warned on some days temperature already above 2C of the IPCC norm.

Lots of feedbacks may already have started, from methane to Antarctic (lack of) ice...

DJ-The combination of factors decrease chances for human survival high speed...

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/dec/06/earth-on-verge-of-five-catastrophic-tipping-points-scientists-warn?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other or https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/dec/06/earth-on-verge-of-five-catastrophic-tipping-points-scientists-warn?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other ;

The tipping points at risk include the collapse of big ice sheets in Greenland and the West Antarctic, the widespread thawing of permafrost, the death of coral reefs in warm waters, and the collapse of one oceanic current in the North Atlantic.

Unlike other changes to the climate such as hotter heatwaves and heavier rainfall, these systems do not slowly shift in line with greenhouse gas emissions but can instead flip from one state to an entirely different one. When a climatic system tips – sometimes with a sudden shock – it may permanently alter the way the planet works.

DJ, the guardian-embedded- still going for global temperature <1,5C + the IPCC norm. Very conservative estimates put 2023 temperature very likely 1,54C+ IPCC norm...If you go for a 1750 baseline temperature will already be over 2C+...

Western democrazy is about choices; Do you want to die from disease?

Rishi Sunak thought the Government should “just let people die” as arguments raged over a second lockdown, the Covid Inquiry was told.

from war, Military Summary on Ukraine

-Total war with Russia

-Men 17-70 y/o and women mobilized

-Mud/snow on frontlines

-Ukraine "anti retreat forces" shelling other Ukraine forces refusing to die

-NATO limiting "aid" but also against "surrender"

The Gaza-genocide is pushing millions of Palestinians into "a corner"...

DJ-Both Ukraine and Palestinians face hunger/starvation, shortage of water, heat, protection with lots of diseases just waiting for a chance...

And then-also ignored-climate collapse; Paul Beckwith https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXbjccFsZIg or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXbjccFsZIg ;

New Report: Dire Sea Level Rise up to 20 meters (66 ft) Locked-In Even if Climate Goals Met

New climate change reports are being released every single day as we approach the start of the 28th version of the United Nations Climate Conference (COP28 - Conference of Parties 28)

In this video I chat about the new report on the vanishing cryosphere with massive sea level rise called: “State of the Cryosphere 2023: Two degrees is too high: We cannot negotiate with the melting point of ice”; link is in this article: https://apple.news/AaPaaajMYT-iWfWXxc...

Essentially, this report argues that Earth is facing dire sea level rise — up to 20m — even if climate goals are met and the global average temperature is stabilized at 2 degrees Celsius relative to the IPCC baseline 1850-1900 average.

I discuss the main findings in this report, and have a look at what the figures tell us in specific areas of glacier melt, permafrost thaw and emissions feedbacks, Arctic and Antarctica polar temperature amplification and sea ice loss, polar ocean acidification, and changes to ocean circulation patterns and consequences.

By the way, we are heading to a 2023 global average temperature of 1.54 degrees Celsius or higher, and on November 18, 2023 the daily average temperature reached 2.0 degrees C above the IPCC baseline for the first time.

It appears that by the start of next year, we will only legitimately and honestly be able to discuss the 1.5 C temperature goal in the past tense.

Recall that in the James Hansen video recently, I chatted about 1.71 C by 2030 and 2 C by 2038 with James.

Please donate to http://paulbeckwith.net to support my research and videos as I join the dots on abrupt climate system mayhem.

DJ, Good info -as always...but terrible news...Arctic West Antarctic even East Antarctic, Greenland ice melting at record levels...We need that ice to cool the planet...but "short term profits" seem to be more important...We are on our way to;

-More climate collapse related diseases/pandemics

-More water/food/refugee wars...

-Exploding water/food shortages

-Mega death...

Of course I hope to be very wrong but we are in such a big mess -ignored by "politics" I am losing any hopium left...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

In my latest "november"post; Pandemic is NOT over...

In WAR The Ukraine war is getting to a bloody end...only to see a next mass murder-with full NATO support-by Israel...

The basic war is an economic one;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSljq-_QRzs or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSljq-_QRzs

JEFFREY SACHS ON A HISTORIC DEBT

Jeffrey David Sachs (/sæks/; born November 5, 1954) is an American economist, academic and public policy analyst. He is the former director of The Earth Institute at Columbia University. He is known as one of the world's leading experts on economic development and the fight against poverty. Detroit, Michigan, U.S.

In short;

2000 US GDP/debt ratio was 35% (So the yearly income of the US did see an amount of debt 35% of that income)

2023 it is 95%, within a few decades it may grow to 185%....

Related https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Og7IC4uRhWE or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Og7IC4uRhWE Lena Petrova;

PENTAGON FAILS Audit of $3.8 TRILLION In Military Assets, Once Again

DJ, US "politics" is paid/run by "donors"...those companies/billionaires do NOT want to pay tax but want US/NATO to secure their investments overseas...

The US is spending 3x the amount of China on military/war (industry), more than the next 10 countries spent on wars put together...

So far China, Japan did buy shares in US debts...they now try to get rid of them...

Interests rates going up soon will mean the US will not spent most of its tax income on wars...but on interests...

DJ-Under this "ocean of debt" there is a "galaxy of debt" in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derivative_(finance) or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derivative_(finance) ;

Buffett called them 'financial weapons of mass destruction.' A potential problem with derivatives is that they comprise an increasingly larger notional amount of assets which may lead to distortions in the underlying capital and equities markets themselves

DJ A few problems;

-US "politics" is funded by a the same group of very rich funding BOTH parties...The US is NOT a democracy it is a racket https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racketeering or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racketeering ;

Racketeering is a type of organized crime in which the persons set up a coercivefraudulentextortionary, or otherwise illegal coordinated scheme or operation (a "racket") to repeatedly or consistently collect a profit.[1] Narrowly, it means coercive or fraudulent business practices; broadly, it can mean any criminal organization with ongoing profit, as defined in the 1970 U.S. RICO Act, which aimed to curtail the power of the Mafia and other organized crime

DJ...a few will get very rich while the rest will go broke....

But that is even the "optimistic/controlled" scenario....The "uncontrolled scenario" will be a sort of "peak credits"...all of a sudden we may be in a global digital bank run with -world wide- major investors trying to get their tens-of-billions $/€ etc. in safety...The 1929 collapse may look small compared to that...

My view is BRICS+ may be driven by this knowledge...The US in many ways is still the major global economy but it is also bankrupt...broken...

So -by now- many non-western countries/companies try to buy up the "productive western factors" ...This could mean Lockheed, Boeing, Ratheon -US war industry- may find out they are -at that moment- in fact Chinese...

The big problem however is US (and UK, EU may be in the same situation more or less) still has to provide "government"...Most-if not all-sources of major income may be gone...

Socio-economic and political collapse may go very high speed...within a day...

You may lose your job, your income, your house, your retirement...The schools may have closed...Supermarkets are next if money has become worthless...

We are on our way to "failed state-status" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Failed_state or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Failed_state ;

failed state is a state that has lost its effective ability to govern its populace. A failed state maintains legal sovereignty but experiences a breakdown in political powerlaw enforcement, and civil society, leading to a state of near-anarchy.

Common characteristics of a failing state include a government unable to tax and police its populace, control and maintain its territory, fill political or civil offices, or maintain its infrastructure. When this happens, widespread corruption and criminality, the intervention of state and non-state actors, the appearance of refugees and the involuntary movement of populations, sharp economic decline, and military intervention from both within and without the state are much more likely to occur.[1]

Metrics have been developed to describe the level of governance of states. The precise level of government control required to avoid being considered a failed state varies considerably amongst authorities.[2] Furthermore, the declaration that a state has "failed" is generally controversial and, when made authoritatively, may carry significant geopolitical consequences

DJ...https://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2023/11/arctic-ocean-heatstroke.html or https://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2023/11/arctic-ocean-heatstroke.html

We are in a "mega-mix crisis" and ignoring that only is increasing the many problems...

As I did write in my latest november writing; Have we gone crazy ? My answer is "yes" crazy seems to be the new normal....We can not survive this crisis !

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

Another climate get-together for politicians that do nothing...https://oneplanetsummit.fr/en/events-16/one-planet-polar-summit-284 or https://oneplanetsummit.fr/en/events-16/one-planet-polar-summit-284 ;

The Arctic and Antarctic are today major strategic areas on which the planet's equilibrium largely depends. Like the oceans to which they are intrinsically linked, the North and South Poles play a central role in climate regulation and the preservation of biodiversity. Actors and first victims of climate change, they are also sounding the alarm.

The state of the world's glaciers and high plateaus is no less worrying; they show the extent to which the collapse of the cryosphere on a global scale can have effects on populations, ecosystems as a whole, water resources, sea-level rise…

If the phenomenon of cryospheric collapse is irreversible, the world's leaders must take it into account in order to enable ecosystems and populations to adapt to the challenges and disasters already visible. The effects of climate disruption, which are warming the Arctic and Antarctic very strongly and causing the Greenland ice sheet and sea ice to melt, as well as the Antarctic glaciers and other emblematic glaciers such as the Himalayas and Kilimanjaro, justify an exceptional and concerted mobilisation of the international community.

France has just adopted its first National Polar Strategy in 2022, explained here. It does not only provide new resources for scientific research, but also sets a number of international objectives, including the organisation in France in 2023 of the first international summit for glaciers and poles, in the form of a One Planet Summit.

DJ...good scientists need to go to this kind of meetings to get funding...For the rest they are ignored...

It’s not often that I make a video with a title this bleak, but unfortunately, needs must. Several pieces of new research point to the inevitability of West Antarctic Ice Sheet collapse, which is pretty bad news. But what we do with this bad news is still up to us. Here, I talk to the lead author of one of these new papers, Dr Kaitlin Naughten. She tells me what it all means, including why we need to focus on adaptation, and why we must take courage, not hope, from this information.

DJ, Europe did see storm Ciarán yesterday. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023%E2%80%9324_European_windstorm_season#Storm_Ciar%C3%A1n_(Emir) or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023%E2%80%9324_European_windstorm_season#Storm_Ciar%C3%A1n_(Emir)

a few remarks;

-wind gusts over 110 mph/180 kmh in France

-stormsystem stretched/moved from Ireland via UK/France but affected Spain, Italy in the south, south of Scandinavia in the north and still is moving east

-At least 11 killed (the wiki-page may be updated)

 -Italy 3

 -France and Belgium both 2

-NL, Germany, Spain and UK (?) 1

DJ-My goal on this -once a- forum is trying to get at least a bit realistic view on complex events...

The bigger picture is extreme weather is getting both more extreme and showing up more often...

Return to "normal" may take longer...but could be impossible/hard after to much damage makes repair not cost effective or risks run to high...Rebuilding houses/buildings close to a coast or riverbank may simply not be insured...

Another aspect of more extreme weather is costs of food production/logistics going up...Of course there are also lots of links between weather/climate and health/pandemics...Here in NL the idea is cold weather may reduce the number of cases of blue tongue in sheep, cattle etc. Spread of colds, flu etc. also believed to see weather effects ("bad" weather = more indoor spread. Ventilation/wind=lower viral loads)

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

Extremely Rapid Acceleration of Ocean Heating in Regions like Southern Oceans: Devils in the Details

-

A new peer-reviewed paper called “Recent acceleration in global ocean heat accumulation by mode and intermediate waters” was just published online on October 28: https://www.nature.com/articles/s4146...

It’s scarier than Halloween. We know that over 90% of global warming is actually ocean warming, with the remaining 10% melting ice, heating the atmosphere, and heating the land. This new study shows how the rate of ocean warming has greatly accelerated recently: in fact the warming in the most recent decade from 2010-2020 has been almost double the warming in the decade from 1990-2000, for water extending from the surface down to depths of 2000 meters (6600 feet).

This is a massive increase in a short period of time. Since the heat capacity of water is huge, that warming is all the more surprising and significant. The ocean warming is highly nonuniform in the oceans around the planet.

For example, most of the warming has occurred in the vast Southern Oceans, and also in the North Atlantic. This has vital implications for sea level rise, making it highly nonuniform as well around the planet. Also, this vitally important paper shows that many of the oceans around the world are becoming more stratified as they warm; namely more layered with less vertical mixing as warm water is a lot less dense than colder water.

Since vertical mixing is vital for bringing carbon near the surface down below (eventually to the sediments in the ocean floor) stratification weakens the ocean sink for carbon, so more carbon stays in the atmosphere. Also, the vertical mixing is vital for bringing surface oxygenated water to depth to support marine life, so stratification reduces this and threatens the marine food chain.

Our warming oceans have an enormous detrimental affect on our climate system, making it vital for maintenance of life on our planet that we slash fossil fuel emissions immediately.

DJ, hotter oceans mean;

-more rain

-more energy for storms

-more ice melting on the poles

Simply put; we are moving the wrong direction only faster...

"Politics" seem only to be interested in wars...getting the rich more rich, ignoring climate, pandemic problems...pushing for global war in the interest of a very small group...

1. Eastern Caribbean Sea (AL97):
A trough of low pressure over the eastern Caribbean Sea continues to
produce a large area of showers and thunderstorms. Environmental
conditions appear conducive for further development during the next
several days while the system moves westward over the central and
southwestern Caribbean Sea, and a tropical depression is likely to
form by the latter part of this week. Regardless of development,
this system has the potential to produce heavy rains over portions
of Central America towards the end of this week.
* Formation chance through 48 hours...low...30 percent.
* Formation chance through 7 days...high...70 percent.

HEAVY RAINS FROM PILAR MOVING INLAND OVER EL SALVADOR... ...FLASH FLOODING POSSIBLE OVER PORTIONS OF CENTRAL AMERICA DURING THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS...

DJ...so from the Atlantic later on this week, first "Pilar" from the Pacific side...The region may face major problemms for months...Mexico-Acapulcu after "Otis" also expected to be problematic for months...

An increase of extreme weather does mean less time for recovery of a region=more people move to other regions + more illnesses...

Food production + logistics an increasing problem.

A climate of the unthinkable on a burning Earth

by Andrew Glikson
“The climate is an angry beast and we are poking at it with sticks” - Wallace Smith Broecker
Having turned a deaf ear to the basic laws of nature, ignoring the essential lessons from climate science, the powers that be have no idea, nor do they appear to care about, the rate and scale of the calamity life on Earth is facing.

Global civilization having effectively replaced the United Nations with the United States and other super powers, having built a veritable nuclear doomsday machine, enhancing the military-industrial complex and atmosphere-poisoning fossil fuel corporations, preoccupied with arming proxy states, allowing regional blood baths to enhance the arms trade, the powers that be are allowing the demise of human civilization as well a myriad of intelligent and beautiful animal and bird species.

-

Nowadays major untruths are propagated by a media subservient to the powers that be.

 • With the COโ‚‚ level reaching 418.51 ppm at a rate of ~2.5 ppm/year and methane CHโ‚„ level reaching 1917.1 ppb at a rate of near-12 ppb per year, greenhouse gas rises are exceeding any in recent geological history, representing the most severe atmospheric crisis since the asteroid impact which killed the dinosaurs 66 million years ago. Oblivious to the physical laws on which climate science is based and to the time factor of the impending climate crisis, setting artificial targets such as “1.5°C by 2030” or “2°C by 2050”, the powers that be may not be aware of what life on planet Earth is facing.
 • As if proposed limits on domestic pollution are meaningful to the arrest of global warming despite continuing mining, export and combustion of fossil fuels, greenhouse gases disperse through the atmosphere regardless of where the fossil fuel is burnt. As conveys by McNeill: “The government denies responsibility for emissions created by the vast amounts of coal and gas Australia exports overseas as one of the world’s largest fossil fuel producers, and has flatly ruled out any discussion on banning new fossil fuel projects”.
 • While ongoing combustion of fossil fuels is raising greenhouse gas concentration at a rate unprecedented in the geological record, current global heating being a self-amplifying process, the utilization of clean energy: solar, wind, hydropower and thermal power cannot by itself stem global warming, now rising above 420 ppm COโ‚‚, well above the 180-280 ppm range of the preceding glacial-interglacial cycles. Such a high COโ‚‚ level, compared to that which existed in the Miocene before 5.3 million years ago when mean global temperature was about ~4°C, has risen within the last century at a rate to which fauna and flora can hardly adjust.

-

Cover-up, censorship and suppression of environmental and climate science in governments, industry and universities occur in countries professing freedom of information policies. One of the latest revelations is the story of Dana Bergstrom.

Nowadays, as bombs keep falling, children are dying, heads of governments jet around the world genuflecting to each other, signing arms deals, uttering honey words, while the corporate media discusses their official dinner menus, they reach no solutions for the worsening humanitarian crises, nor for the future of life on Earth.

DJ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Pacific_hurricane_season#Season_effects or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Pacific_hurricane_season#Season_effects There is lots of discussion on how climate collapse will unfold...Wich area's may see extreme drought, wich area's may have more chance of extreme rain/wind...

Extreme weather is on its way as a "new normal" with that weather only getting more extreme...

Last summer, the harvest failed in large part due to prolonged drought and persistent rain at harvest time. Therefore, it must now come from the winter cereals. The first varieties, such as winter barley, now have to go into the ground, but in many places it is too wet to sow and so again part of the harvest is doomed to fail.

DJ, Blue tongue is now widespread in NL sheep...meaning no lambs will be born next year in many cases...Growing risk other farm animals may show they can catch blue tongue as well..

We may be seeing Israeli "forces" moving into Gaza this evening...this very likely will see an international reaction.

https://www.moonofalabama.org/2023/10/two-middle-east-outlooks.html or https://www.moonofalabama.org/2023/10/two-middle-east-outlooks.html ;

Alastair Crooke, who has personally negotiated prisoner exchanges between Hamas and Israel, has published a rather bleak outlook.

Escalations Cannot Be Stopped – The White House Is Rattled; Escalations Might All Fuse Into ‘One’
The reality of the necessity of war is permeating widely the consciousness of the Arabic and Islamic world.

...
It is no coincidence that Netanyahu flourished a map of Israel during his General Assembly address last month in which Israel dominated from the River to the Sea – and Palestine (indeed any Palestinian territory) was non-existent.

Tom Friedman in his NYT reflections may fear that just as NATO’s impaired performance in Ukraine has ruptured ‘the NATO myth’, so too the 7 October Israeli military and intelligence collapse and what happens in its wake in Gaza ‘might explode the entire pro-American alliance structure’ in the Middle East.

The confluence of two such humiliations might break the spine of western primacy. This seems to be the gist to Friedman’s analysis. (He likely is correct).

Hamas has succeeded in smashing the Israel deterrence paradigm: They were not afraid, the IDF proved far from invincible, and the Arab street mobilised as never before (confounding western cynics who laugh at the very notion of there being an ‘Arab Street’).

Well, that is where we are – and the White House is rattled.
...
This is what worries the White House Team. They are deeply unconfident that an Israeli invasion of Gaza will put ‘Humpty’ together again. Rather, they fear that events may go badly for the IDF, and further, that the images relayed across the Middle East of Israel using overwhelming force in a civilian urban setting will revolt the Islamic sphere.

In spite of western scepticism, there are signs that this insurrection in the Arab sphere is different, and resembles more the 1916 Arab Revolt that overthrew the Ottoman Empire. It is taking on a distinct ‘edge’ as both Shi’a and Sunni religious authorities state the duty of Muslims to stand with Palestinians. In other words, as the Israeli polity becomes plainly ‘Prophetical’, so the Islamic mood is turning eschatological, in its turn.

That the White House should be floating kites about ‘moderate’ Arab leaders pressing ‘moderate’ Palestinians to form an Israeli-friendly government in Gaza that would displace Hamas and impose security and order shows just how severed is the West from reality. Recall that Mahmoud Abbas, General Sisi and the King of Jordan (some of the region’s most pliable leaders) pointedly refused even to meet with Biden after the latter’s Israel trip.

The anger across the region is real and threatens ‘moderate’ Arab leaders, whose room for manoeuvre is now circumscribed.

So hotspots are proliferating, as are attacks on U.S. deployments around the region. Some in Washington claim to perceive an Iranian hand, and are hoping to expand a window for war with Iran.
...
Should Israel enter Gaza (and Israel may decide it has no choice but to launch a ground operation, given the domestic political dynamics and public sentiment), it is likely that Hizbullah will incrementally be drawn further in, leaving the U.S. with the binary option of seeing Israel defeated, or launching a major war in which all the hotspots become fused ‘as one’.

In a sense, the Israeli-Islamic conflict now may only be resolved in this kinetic way. All efforts since 1947 have seen the divide only deepen. The reality of the necessity of war is permeating widely the consciousness of the Arabic and Islamic world.

DJ, we may be very close to a war in West Asia/North Africa...US attacks on/in Syria, Iraq only make matters worse...

Crazy "joe" biden-not willing to look weak-could push the world towards further escalation...Some US "leaders" still believe the US runs the world...

Paul Beckwith on the lack of ice on Antarctica https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIR6mH1lSsE or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIR6mH1lSsE ;

Missing Antarctic Sea Ice to Warm Planet an Equivalent of Roughly an Arctic Blue Ocean Event

The last few years, the Antarctic Sea ice extent has literally fallen off a cliff. This most recent Antarctica winter (our northern hemisphere summer) the sea ice did not form properly, and we are essentially missing around 2 million square km of Antarctic sea ice, as we head into the Antarctica summer (which is our northern hemisphere boreal winter).

Roughly, if this 2 million square km of sea ice deficit occurred in the northern hemisphere, we would be having a Blue Ocean event there.

According to peer-reviewed science on what the consequences would be, it would be an increase of 0.71 W/m2 radiative forcing, or an equivalent of 1 trillion tons of CO2 emitted, with an equivalence of 25 years of additional global warming at present global emission rates.

So the bottom line is this: today we are experiencing the 5-signa level collapse of Antarctic sea ice, and the Sun is rising above the horizon as we head into the Southern Hemisphere summer, with all that sea ice missing.

The ice-albedo feedbacks will kick in, and the warming in the southern hemisphere (and Antarctica Amplification (AAA)) will increase global radiative forcing roughly 0.71 W/m2 which is equivalent to a sudden increase of 1 Trillion tons of CO2 emitted, which is roughly equivalent to 25 years of global emissions (at 40 Gtons CO2 per year).

Sorry folks, but that is the bottom line.

We missed our change to tackle climate change, and we will be experiencing super-exponential, abrupt

Heaviside function like temperature spikes to a much warmer, destabilized climate world. Please donate to http://PaulBeckwith.net to support my research and videos as I connect the dots on abrupt climate system mayhem.

We are living the consequences.

Abrupt climate change is upon us, and the Antarctic sea ice deficit of around 2 million square km will hit us like a sledgehammer over the next year, with global warming effects roughly equivalent to what we would experience with a Blue Ocean Event (BOE) in the Arctic.

The risk of cascading tipping points also spikes up, with the AMOC and every other climate system on the planet approaching ever nearer to their tipping point thresholds.

DJ, El Nino further also pushing up both global average temperature AND methane release...

It will also bring more seismic/volcanic activity. Water vapor may increase global heating, dust on snow means even less reflection of solar heat...

We DID destroy the planet to get a few people very rich...Humans are crazy apes...

11 Reasons Our Civilization Will Soon Collapse

An excellent article came out recently, explaining 10 reasons why our civilization will soon collapse; here is the link: https://www.okdoomer.io/10-reasons-ou... Since this article is so well written, well referenced, and hard hitting I felt that it was very important to do a detailed video on it. Given the total destruction of a hospital in the Gaza Strip today with the loss of over 500 human lives, almost certainly by a U.S. built JDAM 1000 pound bomb dropped intentionally from an Israeli warplane, I have added an additional reason to the ten in the article. Given the events of the day, we appear to be marching closer to global catastrophe and civilization collapse, and it is hard to argue that we don’t deserve it.

..https://www.okdoomer.io/10-reasons-our-civilization-will-soon-collapse/ or https://www.okdoomer.io/10-reasons-our-civilization-will-soon-collapse/ ;

That’s right. Our entire global industrial civilization is going to collapse. And soon, which means within the lifetimes of most people alive today.

I realize this is quite the claim, and a pretty terrifying one if you’re under 50 or so. In this article, I will list 10 problems the world is facing, each of which could cause the collapse of civilization all on its own. Which means, if even one of these problems isn’t solved, our civilization is doomed.

Before I continue, let me explain what I mean by “collapse.” First of all, it doesn’t necessarily mean that humans will go extinct. While that is certainly a plausible scenario given the many existential threats we are facing, I still believe it is unlikely. Small groups of humans survived in very difficult conditions for tens of thousands of years.

By collapse, I mean a breakdown of social institutions like governments and economies, followed by a dramatic decline in the human population. I realize that’s still kind of vague, so here’s a more specific definition I found in the book, How Everything Can Collapse.

It says, “A collapse is the process at the end of which basic needs (water, food, housing, clothing, energy, etc.) can no longer be provided [at a reasonable cost] to a majority of the population by services under legal supervision.”

As society breaks down, life will get simpler and simpler. By the late 21st century, people will be living the way they did in the early 19th century.

DJ, Paul Beckwith does not agree with "climate alarmists" predicting temperature rise will increase that fast humans will no longer survive within a few years...https://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2023/10/temperature-rise-september-2023-and-beyond.html or https://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2023/10/temperature-rise-september-2023-and-beyond.html

When you look at ends of empires (West/East Roman Empire a.o.) the reasons for collapse are complex. The "western Empire" Europe-US telling the rest of the world what to do lasted 500 years...BRICS+ ended it just recently...NATO/biden made wars are the -insane- reactions to these changes only speeding up western collapse...

Global collapse may be the outcome of a "mega mix" of climate collapse, diseases/pandemics (denied by "politics" for sale...), wars and "peak fiat currency"...A western economic collapse pulling the rest of the globe with it...

We already are IN !!! the collapse process ! All we may be able to do is try to limit further damage...What is needed most NOW is international cooperation...but we are further away from that than we may have EVER !!! been....

When predators are removed or a new food source is introduced, the population skyrockets then collapses as the food source is exhausted. (There’s a great book called Overshoot: The Ecological Basis of Revolutionary Change which explains this in detail.)

So the question is: How long until humans overshoot the Earth’s carrying capacity?

We already did. About 50 years ago.

That’s according to the Global Footprint Network. Every year, they calculate the date when humans have used up as many resources as the planet can generate in a year. It’s called Earth Overshoot Day, and last year it was on July 28th, which means that every year, humans use the equivalent of nearly 1.75 Earths.

You might be wondering, if we used up an entire planet’s worth of resources by July 28th, then how did we continue to live after that date? We continued by using resources that had accumulated long before humans came along. Things like forests, aquifers, topsoil, and fossil fuels. Eventually, those surplus resources will be gone, and every year we will be forced to live on what the planet can generate that year.

This is something the average climate activist doesn’t seem to understand. Even if we could stop climate change, our civilization would still have the problem of dwindling resources. Now that we’ve gone into overshoot, the population is destined to plummet no matter what we do.

We should have seen this coming. (Some people did.) Why did anyone think that infinite growth on a finite planet was possible? Of course we would eventually reach the limits of what the planet can support, but most of us assumed it would happen far in the future, long after we’re dead.

Now, we have officially surpassed the carrying capacity of our planet. As we begin to run out of essential resources and food becomes harder to produce, the economy will collapse, the population will finally go back down, and civilization as we know it will come to an end.

DJ, we have to decrease our consumption...Good family planning = less consumers...but we have run out of time...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

DJ, from el nino to sunspots to green house gas increasing...All these factors at themselves are not new...however the global temperature now is record high...With these factors further increasing feed backs also will increase further; less (Ant)Arctic ice=more polar heat...more methane (etc) release...We soon will be over the 2C+ temperature rise compared to "pre-industrial"...Even the "most green policies" can no longer stop that...

Global ocean surface temperatures are so high that climate scientists are describing them as "off the charts". September 2023 global average surface temperatures obliterated the previous record high, causing those same scientists to declare the result 'shocking' and 'out of control'. The consequences for the world's largest ice sheet are already measurable. The 2023 Antarctic Sea ice maximum was more than a million square kilometres lower than the previous low record. Now two scientific research teams published data on just how bad it is likely to get.

DJ, IPCC -political- models exclude a lot of factors...Main stream propaganda keeps talking about sea level rise/2100...reality is 2023 is already an extreme weather-year..It is certain 2024 will be even worse...

Planet-Killing Wars

Join Dr. Peter Carter, Paul Beckwith and Regina Valdez as they discuss the effects of war and the war machine on the living planet that we inhabit and the urgent need to ‘smarten up’ as a civilization. This video was recorded on September 27th, 2023, and published on October 1st, 2023.

Some of the topics discussed:

- How wars are an atrocity with no real winners, only victims and how warfare has evolved from primitive tools to advanced weaponry that leaves a lasting impact on the planet.

- The interconnectedness of humans and the planet and thus what affects the environment affects us all.

- The current state of armed conflicts worldwide and the high number of casualties.

DJ, If we do not end war war will end us.....No one -NO ONE !!!!!- has ANY !!!! right to kill !!! NEVER !!!!

There are some people making money out of destruction...."never wasting a good crisis" even willing to create those crises...The Sui-Cene, "more or less "end-time" is political !

We now face record heat in many places...Spain dealing with another heatwave...Yes-I do like summer weather...but NOT in october here in NL !

https://forum.arctic-sea-ice.net/ or https://forum.arctic-sea-ice.net/ has more on the -lack of- ice keeping our planet "a cool place for live"....

DJ, To "save the economy=profits"  "politics" are denying problems..now even rewrite history to make it fit their insanity...

We urgently need "other politics"...Wealth may NOT be a sign of success but of evil...We live in an "economy" that simply ignores lots of damages and costs...Profits are private, costs are tax-funded...

Public health, education, housing, transport getting de-funded to put trillions into a war-for-profit-machine is self destruction. But if I make that point "I am the crazy one".....

Are humans becoming an "insane naked ape"?

"We do not have time"...we need to change the way "we" live NOW !

But we keep transporting diseases all over the world by planes and ships...We do NOT control pandemics, only the "news" on pandemics..."Do net test-do not tell"  is NOT a solution but just another problem...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

DJ, People are better in noticing fast changes-may miss "slower" ones https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEuxDJ1XEi0 or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEuxDJ1XEi0 Carribean risks growing with "Philippe" moving more west than expected earlier...Also flooding-risks in Haïti...mud slides...

Here in NL it may get even 26C-almost 80F...very warm for early october !

When you move from one-in a 100 year event per year to "a few" of those it is easy to NOT want to see a pattern...When extreme weather stays away from your house "it is not your problem"...The heavy rain flooding New York City a few days back may reach the Bahamas today...

DJ, exponential changes have a very slow start...we are beyond the start of the process....

The amount of greenhouse gases entering the atmosphere right now is way more than what is being taken out and as long as that continues to happen, the world will just keep getting warmer.
I can change the words of that sentence and the same truth can be seen.
The amount of money entering their wallets is way more than being taken out and as long as that continues to happen, the rich just keep getting richer.
See?
It really isn't too hard to understand.

Wavering ambition by governments and a growing belief that science is politically subjective are great causes for concern in a rapidly escalating climate crisis, an expert told AFP.

A cascade of extreme weather events have inflicted devastation in 2023, which the European Union's climate monitor says is likely to be the hottest in human history.

It underscores the urgency of slashing planet-heating greenhouse gas emissions to avert the catastrophic impacts of greater global warming.

Yet several countries have drawn criticism for moves to weaken their  in recent weeks, including Sweden and Britain, which has also approved a new oil project.

Meanwhile in the United States, climate-skeptic —notably Donald Trump—are Republican frontrunners.

For Francois Gemenne, a  who contributed to the last report series of the UN's expert advisory panel, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the trends are worrying.

"I am very concerned by a whole series of climbdowns we are seeing from a political or economic point of view," the Belgian told AFP.

The IPCC lead author cited British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's latest policy changes and leading Republican politicians in the United States "who do not recognize the scientific reality of ".

"What bothers me is the fact that science, for a part of the population that might be growing, is becoming a matter of belief, opinion, even ideology," said Gemenne.

Current climate-related damage is happening with  at around 1.2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and as the world lurches towards breaching the key 1.5C target agreed in Paris in 2015.

DJ....the basic idea that "if you do not like the science you can ignore science" is the basics of pandemics, climate collapse...Ignoring or even rewriting history is the basics for "the last war"...

DJ-On this -once- a forum I try to "form an opinion" , make up my mind...hope to be very wrong often !

If some people are using, even creating, all kinds of crises to make lots of money then there is a very major basic problem. If we fail to stop such a major problem we - as humans- have failed and may become extinct...

A mean reason why "we" do not learn from history is we do not want to be confronted with our mistakes and dark sides...Genocides are all over history..."better technology" is "improving" the "killer ratio"...You can get more people killed per $/€ invested...and that is kalled progress...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

DJ, more climate disasters in the news; South Africa, Central America-floods/landslides...abnormal heat in Brazil...

https://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2023/09/september-2023-highest-anomaly-on-record.html or https://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2023/09/september-2023-highest-anomaly-on-record.html

The above image shows the temperature in 2023 as a bold black line, up to September 22, 2023, with the temperature reaching an anomaly of 1.12°C above the 1979-2000 mean for that day.

It looks like September 2023 will be the month with the highest temperature anomaly on record and the year 2023 will be the hottest year on record.

Note: 1979-2000 is not pre-industrial. The current El Niño is still strengthening, as illustrated by the image on the right, adapted from IRI.

DJ...so already on september 22 1,12C above the 1979-2000 mean temperature....

Until now, February 2016 has been the hottest month on record. The above image, from an earlier post, shows that February 2016 was 3.28°C (5.904°F) hotter than 1880-1896 on land, and 3.68°C (6.624°F) hotter compared to February 1880 on land. Note that 1880-1896 is not pre-industrial. The image adds an even more poignant note: Looking at global averages over long periods is a diversion, peak temperature rise is the killer!

The situation raises questions. How much has the temperature risen? Will the temperature keep rising? What can be done about it? How can these questions best be answered?

DJ.....so more than 3C februray 2016 than the 1880-1896 average...

While many politicians keep pushing the idea that 1.5°C above pre-industrial hasn't been crossed yet, we may already have crossed 2°C above pre-industrial, as discussed in this analysis.

-

emission reductions are best achieved early, rather than late. Yet, many politicians keep supporting fuel (fossil fuel and biofuels) and envisage burning of fuel to continue well beyond 2050 (combined with BECCS). Instead, when taking into account damage to health and the environment, and the danger of runaway temperature rise, it should be clear that better policies must be implemented soon, such as local feebates, to support better methods and technologies such as biochar, heat pumps and eVTOL air taxis.

DJ....politics seem to go for short term profits...even if it would kill all of us within years....

Alarms bells have sounded loud and clear, such as here, warning that the temperature rise could be more than 3°C as early as in 2026. The precautionary principle should prevail and the looming dangers should prompt people into demanding comprehensive and effective action to reduce the damage and to improve the situation. To combat rising temperatures, a transformation of society should be undertaken, along the lines of this 2022 post in combination with a declaration of a climate emergency.

DJ....every time there is a new climate conference "things went faster than expected".....

In the "still NOT over pandemic" we see politics often still in denial-very likely looking for scape goats, blame games..."of course they did know the pandemic was not over"...even if they made other claims just a few months ago...

In the NATO-BRICS war "stand by Ukraine" could mean regime change in Kiev to get out of that disaster-war made by NATO...O-yes "we won" ....only the petro-$ is gone, western industry is in BRICS hands etc...but "we won"....

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

Tropical fish caught in White Sea near Arkhangelsk

It is noted that its appearance in the White Sea is an exceptional phenomenon

ARKHANGELSK, September 19. /TASS/. Garfish, which normally is found near Africa's western coast and near Europe's south, was caught in the White Sea in the Arkhangelsk Region, the Kenozero National Park's press service said.

"The migrant from far-away southern waters - garfish (or sea needle) was caught in the White Sea, not far from the village of Lopshenga," the press service said. "The garfish's habitat is the western coast of Africa and Europe."

Garfish is a long and slender fish with a laterally compressed body and elongated jaws, resembling a pterodactyl's beak.

Garfish can be found in the Black and Baltic Seas. But, according to the national park's ichthyologist Gennady Dvoryankin, its appearance in the White Sea is an exceptional phenomenon. "Obviously, the fish has been brought to the Barents Sea by the Gulf Stream, and then it just got lost and after long wanderings it ended up near the national park shores," the press service quoted the expert as saying. "Presently, the fish is being studied at the laboratory."

Projections. (Table JAXA-Ant1)

Average remaining melt (of the last 10 years) would produce a minimum in Feb 2024 of 0.80 million km2, 1.15 million km2 BELOW the 2023 record low minimum of 1.95 million km2 which would be 1st lowest in the satellite record.
This projection probably exaggerates the melt in the Weddell Sea in particular

Geopolitical Review: US Preps Taiwan Proxy vs. China, NATO Postures as Ukraine Fails

DJ...I am not that "optimistic" on US/NATO not going nuclear over Ukraine. The underlying mental "problem" is "western superiority" or nuclear war...

For some in "the west" non-western global dominance seems to be unacceptable....

-Diseases

Of course one can ignore CoViD, flu, M-pox, etc..."living with diseases" ...make insane claims catching a disease makes you stronger/gets you immunity (for a.o. CoViD)....however reality is more and more people end up with long term health issues...For now it look likes vaccines do limit damage however most children never were vaccinated...

H5N1 soon will reach even the millions of birds in Antarctica-soon in a "warm summer"....H5N1 is spreading also in more and more mammals-increasing the risks of recombination/mix with H1/H2 types of (human) flu...

-Climate

Food production and logistics is moving towards the danger zone...From chickens/eggs to harvests getting destroyed. Getting food to the places in need of food is getting harder...Also extreme weather/heat/drought is becoming a mass killer...

We may have run out of time to stop major disasters...

-Economic collapse

You can not have a real economy based on fiat-money...someone has to pay for that. China, Africa etc. may no longer be willing to pay for western currencies...So hyperinflation may be around the corner...

Western companies may move to BRICS+ countries-now with over half of the global population per 2024...Foreign "policy/insanity" is leaving the west both without afordable energy, basic materials and a market...

---------------

Can we still limit damage ? The longer we wait the harder it gets...

-Global cooperation on climate, health, "green" economies and an end to poverty should be on top of a global agenda.

-Media/journalist going for the best available info-not des-info...

-Creating public support -worldwide- for needed changes;

Earth ‘well outside safe operating space for humanity’, scientists find - First complete ‘scientific health check’ shows most global systems beyond stable range in which modern civilisation emerged Story by me

Earth’s life support systems have been so damaged that the planet is “well outside the safe operating space for humanity”, scientists have warned.

Their assessment found that six out of nine “planetary boundaries” had been broken because of human-caused pollution and destruction of the natural world. The planetary boundaries are the limits of key global systems – such as climate, water and wildlife diversity – beyond which their ability to maintain a healthy planet is in danger of failing.

The broken boundaries mean the systems have been driven far from the safe and stable state that existed from the end of the last ice age, about 10,000 years ago, to the start of the industrial revolution. The whole of modern civilisation arose in this time period, called the Holocene.

The assessment was the first of all nine planetary boundaries and represented the “first scientific health check for the entire planet”, the researchers said. Six boundaries have been passed and two are judged to be close to being broken: air pollution and ocean acidification. The one boundary that is not threatened is atmospheric ozone, after action to phase out destructive chemicals in recent decades led to the ozone hole shrinking.

The scientists said the “most worrying” finding was that all four of the biological boundaries, which cover the living world, were at, or close to, the highest risk level. The living world is particularly vital to the Earth as it provides resilience by compensating for some physical changes, for example, trees absorbing carbon dioxide pollution.

-

The assessment, which was published in the journal Science Advances and was based on 2,000 studies, indicated that several planetary boundaries were passed long ago. The boundary for biosphere integrity, which includes the healthy functioning of ecosystems, was broken in the late 19th century, the researchers said, as destruction of the natural world decimated wildlife. The same destruction, particularly the razing of forests, means the boundary for land use was broken last century.

Climate models have suggested the safe boundary for climate change was surpassed in the late 1980s. For freshwater, a new metric involving both water in lakes and rivers and in soil, showed this boundary was crossed in the early 20th century.

Another boundary is the flow of nitrogen and phosphorus in the environment. These are vital for life but excessive use of fertilisers mean many waters are heavily polluted by these nutrients, which can lead to algal blooms and ocean dead zones. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization data, three times the safe level of nitrogen is added to fields every year.

The boundary for synthetic pollution, such as pesticides, plastics and nuclear waste, was shown to have been passed by a 2022 study. The Richardson-led analysis assessed air pollution for the first time, which affects plant growth and monsoon rains. It found air pollution has passed the planetary boundary in some regions such as south Asia and China, but not yet globally. Ocean acidification is also assessed as getting worse and being close to exceeding the safe boundary.

The scientists said: “This update finds that six of the nine boundaries are transgressed, suggesting that Earth is now well outside of the safe operating space for humanity.”

-

Rockstrom said: “If you want to have security, prosperity and equity for humanity on Earth, you have to come back into the safe space and we’re not seeing that progress currently in the world.”

Phasing out fossil fuel burning and ending destructive farming are the key actions required.

The planetary boundaries are set using specific metrics, such as the level of CO2 in the atmosphere for climate change. The Earth’s systems are resilient to some level of change, so most of the boundaries have been set at a level higher than that which persisted over the last 10,000 years. For example, CO2 was at 280 parts per million until the industrial revolution but the planetary boundary is set at 350ppm.

Prof Simon Lewis, at University College London and not part of the study team, said: “This is a strikingly gloomy update on an already alarming picture. The planet is entering a new and much less stable state – it couldn’t be a more stark warning of the need for deep structural changes to how we treat the environment.”

DJ...the article is describing the picture science agrees upon...The "feed backs" due to global warming-like "explosive increase" of methane release may NOT be included...because they did not happen yet...https://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2023/09/seafloor-methane-tipping-point-reached.html or https://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2023/09/seafloor-methane-tipping-point-reached.html

If "politics" keeps failing we should know what the outcome means for us. We-as humans-may not survive at +3C above pre-industrial. Some regions run higher risks. Those regions now did see extreme high temperatures, wild fires, extreme rain...(Mediterranean region as an example). It does decrease food production, logistics...

DJ-my view- extreme weather itself may become the main killer...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

Abstract

This planetary boundaries framework update finds that six of the nine boundaries are transgressed, suggesting that Earth is now well outside of the safe operating space for humanity. Ocean acidification is close to being breached, while aerosol loading regionally exceeds the boundary. Stratospheric ozone levels have slightly recovered. The transgression level has increased for all boundaries earlier identified as overstepped. As primary production drives Earth system biosphere functions, human appropriation of net primary production is proposed as a control variable for functional biosphere integrity. This boundary is also transgressed. Earth system modeling of different levels of the transgression of the climate and land system change boundaries illustrates that these anthropogenic impacts on Earth system must be considered in a systemic context.

The bold black line at the top of the image below, adapted from Climate Reanalyzer, shows extremely high sea surface temperatures up to September 13, 2023, much higher than in any previous year on record.

The image below, created with NASA data, shows why these extremely high sea surface temperatures are so worrying. The image shows monthly mean global surface temperature anomalies (open ocean) vs 1901-1930. The ochre trend, based on January 1900-August 2023 data, indicates the latent heat tipping point was crossed in 2021 and the seafloor methane tipping point could be crossed in 2033. The red trend, based on August 2008-August 2023 data and better reflecting variables such as El Niño, indicates that the seafloor methane tipping point could be crossed late 2023. Data show the seafloor methane tipping point was reached in August 2023.

The latent heat tipping point is estimated to correspond with a sea surface temperature anomaly of 1°C above the long term average, 1901-1930 on the above image, as discussed in earlier posts such as this one

Sea ice constitutes a latent heat buffer, consuming incoming heat as it melts. While the ice is melting, all energy (at 334 J/g) goes into changing ice into water and the temperature remains at 0°C (273.15K or 32 °F). Once all ice has turned into water, all subsequent energy goes into heating up the water, and will do so at 4.18 J/g for every 1°C the temperature of the water rises.

DJ, we are ignoring public health risks -to secure profits for the very rich criminal 0,1%...That "elite" in part is also making money out of wars....

Veilig Thuis said it was “surprised” to have received dozens of referrals for parents who took their children on the demonstrations on Saturday and Sunday, which ended peacefully.

“We think it was unnecessary to refer these cases to us,” said spokesman Onno Aerden. “Demonstrating is not a form of child abuse.”

Police arrested more than 2,900 people over the two days for taking part in the unauthorised protests that blocked the A12 motorway heading into the city.

One mother, Musetta Blaauw, told AD the police decision to refer her two children, aged 16 and six, to the agency was “pure intimidation”.

“This was a peaceful demonstration, not hooligans rioting,” she said. “We were just sitting on the motorway singing songs and eating biscuits.”

Dick Goijers, spokesman for The Hague’s police division, admitted that almost all the children arrested had been referred to Veilig Thuis, but said this was “standard procedure” for “arrests and other situations where children are at risk, such as neglect.”

But Aerden said police appeared to be using the agency’s name “as a kind of threat” to parents taking part in the demonstration. “A referral to Veilig Thuis is not a punitive measure and shouldn’t be used as such,” he said.

DJ, "Veilig thuis"/Safe-at-home is already overloaded with taking care of children that are in real risk situations. The police may report children in climate protests to "safe-at-home" following political orders... the Mayor of The Hague is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_van_Zanen or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_van_Zanen a member of the neo-liberal party for decades...

-------------

DJ-There is a very large gap between those taking climate problems very serious and those "trying to make a living"....My view; blocking roads in protest against fossil fuel subsidies (over 47 million per year in NL) has to be part of a communication strategy.

In the UK XR/eXtinction Rebellion almost ends up at a terrorist list. NL did criminalize other protest groups (peace movement, squaters, anti-nuclear)...in part by violent actions by the police and than blaming the protest groups. Also right wing groups may decide climate protests go to far...so "the police" than would act as an in-between party while in fact possibly involved in organizing right wing protests...

Maybe most of the public only will learn reality the hard way....we may need more, worse, climate disasters...

The global economy for now is based on a high level of fossil energy consumption. The damage that brings are kept out of the energy costs...tax payers end up paying for it....We may need an elite-responsible of wasting most energy...it is just a small group-to take steps back. Stop private jets, cheap flying etc. Also here it are the poor paying for the rich...if not dying for a rich exclusive club of billionaires almost claiming 0,1% "own this planet"...

For that matter it is also a fight for democracy....

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

DJ, We may not be that far away from our first official-national- heatwave in NL for a septembermonth...https://www.dutchnews.nl/2023/09/extinction-rebellion-permanent-blockade-planned-on-a12/ or https://www.dutchnews.nl/2023/09/extinction-rebellion-permanent-blockade-planned-on-a12/ today police also used watercanons to cool themselves while breaking up a blockade of the main The Hague entry road for the second day...

The above image, adapted from Climate Reanalyzer, shows that on September 8, 2023, the North Atlantic sea surface reached a new record high temperature, of 25.4°C, even higher than the record reached the day before.

The situation is critical! More heat entering the Arctic Ocean threatens to destabilize hydrates and cause huge amounts of methane to erupt and enter the atmosphere.

The image on the right, adapted from NASA Worldview, shows the poor state of the sea ice.

On September 8, 2023, the Polarstern reached the North Pole. The image below shows the research vessel and the sea ice at the North Pole.

-

The image on the right, adapted from University of Bremen, shows Arctic sea ice concentration and the route followed by the Polarstern.

The threat is that, as the water of the Arctic Ocean keeps heating up, heat will reach the seafloor and destabilize methane hydrates contained in sediments at the seafloor, resulting in eruptions of huge amounts of methane.

Erupting from the hydrates occurs at great force, since the methane expands 160 when decompressed, resulting in the methane rapidly rising in the form of plumes, leaving little or no opportunity for microbes to decompose the methane in the water column. Furthermore, the atmosphere over the Arctic contains very little hydroxyl, resulting in methane persisting in the air over the Arctic much longer than elsewhere.

Ominously, very high methane levels continue to be recorded at Barrow, Alaska, U.S.

DJ-Politics serving the fossil fuel economy is destroying this planet...

We have a #medicane in the making. Storm #Daniel in the Mediterranean now has tropical characteristics heading south and will make landfall tonight near Benghazi, Libya. The dark shades of purple are winds 50 mph+

DJ, Since NATO destroyed Libya we may not see much reporting on this -yet another- extreme weather event...

Our destruction of the planet’s climate is the ultimate result of a blind, parasitic civilisation which falsely assumed it had the luxury of taking unilateral decisions 1/4 of Greece’s agricultural production capacity vanished in 48 hours. Let that one sink in #ClimateAction

DJ, several hurricanes/storms on the oceans may bring hot temperatures/more melt to the poles...https://forum.arctic-sea-ice.net/ or https://forum.arctic-sea-ice.net/ both north and south pole may be in major problems...

-In some areas there is more rain than snow...

-wind keeps blowing/eroding ice and snow

-melting ice/rain on ice is darker so absorbing more heat

-heat coming under (sea)ice via much to warm ocean water AND via hot air on top of the ice/snow/land (Greenland/Antarctica)

------------

So politics go for more war...Like with climate also on pandemics their "profit only" lack of strategy is beyond criminal....

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

Extinction Rebellion is on Saturday scheduled to start what it describes as a “permanent” blockade of the A12 motorway, with well-known activists reportedly on the way there and planning repeat, daily action.

On Friday caretaker justice minister and the next leader of the VVD Dilan YeลŸilgöz urged protestors not to block the A12 motorway, saying the right to protest was “a great asset” but should not be done on major traffic routes. Dutch media report that 10,000 protesters are expected on Saturday and the ANWB warned motorists to take other routes.

Previous such demonstrations have led to mass arrests, including of journalists, and the use of water cannon. In May, Game of Thrones actress Carice van Houten was among those arrested then immediately released, in a demonstration of some 1,600 people.

DJ, (NL) Politics is working for the fossil fuel energy interests. They ignore public interest. It is politics turning democracy into "democrazy"...

This is absolutely devastating news. First, one has to wonder if perhaps we have already passed the West Antarctic collapse tipping point. Second, it begs the question, are other climate model projections under-estimating the speed of #climate breakdown

link; https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/sep/08/antarctica-warming-much-faster-than-models-predicted-in-deeply-concerning-sign-for-sea-levels or https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/sep/08/antarctica-warming-much-faster-than-models-predicted-in-deeply-concerning-sign-for-sea-levels ;

Antarctica is likely warming at almost twice the rate of the rest of the world and faster than climate change models are predicting, with potentially far-reaching implications for global sea level rise, according to a scientific study.

Scientists analysed 78 Antarctic ice cores to recreate temperatures going back 1,000 years and found the warming across the continent was outside what could be expected from natural swings.

In West Antarctica, a region considered particularly vulnerable to warming with an ice sheet that could push up global sea levels by several metres if it collapsed, the study found warming at twice the rate suggested by climate models.

DJ, embedded media, the problem is NOT sea level rise...

At temperatures above 68 degrees Fahrenheit, or 20 degrees Celsius, the rate of photosynthesis decreases because the enzymes do not work as efficiently at the increasing  temperatures.
At a temperature above 104 degrees Fahrenheit – 40 degrees Celsius – the enzymes that carry out photosynthesis lose their shape and functionality, and the photosynthetic rate declines rapidly.
The graph of photosynthetic rate versus temperature presents a curved appearance with the peak rate occurring close to room temperature. Carbon Dioxide diffuses into leaves but can be slowed and even stopped at higher temperatures.

DJ, the short term major problems;

-extreme heat waves with lots of urban population unable to cool down..

-food and water shortage

-extreme weather...

Somehow people see the present extreme weather events as exceptional...It will only get much worse...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

We should expect 2024 will be more extreme due to the -just started-"El Nino"...This will result in more methane release-further pushing up temperatures...Less ice on Greenland, Antarctic...less sea ice...

https://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2023/09/too-late-the-climate-and-nuclear-juggernaut.html or https://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2023/09/too-late-the-climate-and-nuclear-juggernaut.html ;

Under the guise of lies and cover-ups, the global powers to be have set the stage for the unthinkable, a world-wide hair-trigger human suicide system taking much of nature with it. With the exception of abstract ideas or experimental attempts, no actual steps are being taken to slow down, or even reverse, the inexorable rise of atmospheric greenhouse gases, now rising into Miocene-like levels of >400 parts per million COโ‚‚ within the century, the fastest rise rate identified in the geological record.

Nor are steps undertaken to try and dismantle the global doomsday fleet of more than 12,700 nuclear warheads, where space and the oceans have become nuclear playgrounds, enough to render large parts of the Earth uninhabitable.

The criminal insanity of political, military, strategic, economic and scientific leaders, matched only by the naive blindness of billions of people, is consistent with what has been referred to as the ‘Fermi Paradox’ โ”€ the apparent absence of signals from technological civilizations in the Milky Way, interpreted in terms of a self-destruction of such civilizations.

-

But perhaps the most lethal human branch has become the media, which with few exceptions turned into a global propaganda machine skilful in distorting facts, promoting conflicts, manufacturing untruths, concealing avenues to peace and promoting wars in the tradition of Goebbels.

DJ, The US "politics" has fallen into the hands of criminals...Covering up their family crimes by wars...

Climate collapse in itself is terrible...pandemics are linked to climate collapse. Starting a nuclear war "to solve the problem" would only proof humans may not be worthy of living on this planet.

๐ŸŒ€**MEDICANE**—A very rare hurricane/cyclone-like storm in the Mediterranean Sea, due to very hot waters from Europe’s 2023 heat dome, may be emerging this week, that could dump astronomical amounts of rain and cause flooding in Greece ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ท. Extreme forecasts of well over 500 mm of rain (less likely, but some models suggest maybe up to 2000 mm / 78 inches of rain) in 48 hours! (See right graph). Hurricane-level wind gust also recorded already. But the extreme volume of rain could cause severe amount of flooding. #Medicane

-

The medicane on the first pic is projected for next Sunday (and is still very uncertain). Has nothing to do with the astronomical rainfall in Greece right now

DJ, Spain had a crazy amount of rain the last few days...Taiwan/China hit hard by a cyclone...more hurricanes are forming and may a.o. hit the US later next week. The Biden administration has approved funding for the first-ever transfer of US military equipment to Taiwan under a program typically saved for sovereign nations, according to a notification sent to Congress on Tuesday.

The package – which is part of the State Department’s foreign military financing (FMF) program – totals $80 million and will be paid for by US taxpayers.

The US intends to keep creating the tension of the Taiwan question to provoke China rather than to ease the tension, analysts said on Thursday, as US President Joe Biden's administration has approved a military transfer to the island of Taiwan under the Foreign Military Financing, or FMF, which is normally used for sovereign states.

On Greenland ice melt https://forum.arctic-sea-ice.net/index.php/topic,3857.150.html or https://forum.arctic-sea-ice.net/index.php/topic,3857.150.html

Daily melt down 1 % at 14%, which is well above the longterm average for the time of year.

Daily SMB gain of 2.1 GT compared with the 2017-2022 average gain on this day of 2.7 GT. Accumulated SMB gain at 394GT is 15 GT (4%) above the 2017-2022 average of 379 GT.

The next few days?
Maybe warm enough for above average melt over days 3-5 days mostly in the South?

SMB. Precipitation variable but maybe with extreme rain and snow next Saturday to Monday skirting East Greenland from a deep low from the South - that includes warmth and wet from the remains of Hurricane Franklin?

Accumulated melt to date is above the 2017-2022 average total by 16%.

Accumulated SMB is certain to end up above the 5 year average despite the certainty that accumulated melt this year will finish at 3rd and maybe even 2nd highest in the satellite record (from NSIDC Greenland Today data). 2012 will still be by far the year of the record accumulated melt and the lowest accumulated SMB gain in the DMI SMB year of 1 Sept to 31 Aug.

A warmer wetter Greenland this year in line with the climate models.
The strengthening El Nino could give us an unusual Autumn/Winter?

DJ, Greenland and Antarctica may have a lot of similarity...

A few years ago Nate Hagens wrote a brilliant peer reviewed scientific paper (Ref1) in the journal “Ecological Economics” titled: “Economics for the Future: Beyond the SuperOrgasm” (sic Organism).

I chat about the crucial messages of this paper, which are that energy constraints will soon result in a collapse of our present way of life. Orthodox economics does not consider energy constraints, and our Superorganism society is on its last legs as we create more and more credit (this debt) to extract dwindling fossil fuels.

Why Joe Biden & son, Blinken, & Sullivan may resort to "mini-nukes", rather than concede Ukraine defeat & NATO "power failure". Short answer: only 14 months before election AND they have personal stake. If they lose, there is enough evidence for jail time.

Temperatures are high

Globally, temperatures have been at record high levels for the time of year for some time in 2023, as illustrated by the image below, adapted from Climate Reanalyzer.

On August 22, 2023, the world temperature was 16.9°C, 0.82°C higher than it was on that day in 1979-2000.

Extreme heat stress alert

High Wet Bulb Globe Temperatures hit the U.S. over a large area, over a long time.

Lots of places facing extreme heat-extreme weather...also affecting logistics from the Dardanel-route to the Black Sea (wildfires) to Panama-canal (drought), Dnjepr river (NATO blew up a dam and blame Russia)...

From the Arctic News Blogspot article;

The image below shows forecasts for August 24, 2023, measured as temperature (left), apparent temperature (center) and wet bulb globe temperature (right), three areas with high values marked by squares, circles, and stars, respectively.

For descriptions of the various ways temperature can be measures, also see the earlier post Extreme Heat Stress

Unbearable conditions

The images further illustrate that, as temperatures rise, conditions are increasingly occurring that make it hard, if not impossible for many species (including humans) to survive, even at relatively high latitudes. This danger has been discussed in many earlier posts, such as in Humans may be extinct in 2026

DJ...again temperatures themselves may become "killing millions" ...I would like to believe 2024 -future- would offer hope...but why ?

“Faster than Forecast: the story ice tells about abrupt climate change”

book by Dr. Jason Box

Accompanied by numerous first-hand videos and written in plain language, the American “ice maverick”, Professor Jason Box leads readers through a personal 30 year scientific adventure. This is the story that Greenland ice tells about abrupt anthropogenic climate change, and its global consequences.

The readers and viewers understand how the Arctic is a ‘leading edge of climate breakdown’. The book concludes with a personal experience of radical resistance culture having surprising benefits, underlined with video clips.

After framing grave climate impacts, a narrow window of opportunity for prosperity is defined, but only by following a set of radical solutions, described in the book, will the worst aspects of climate catastrophe be averted.

The image below shows that the World Sea Surface Temperature (60°South - 60°North) reached a new daily record high on August 13, 2023. As the image also shows, the sea surface temperature over the past few months has been much higher than in any other year on record.

The image below shows NASA data for Monthly mean global surface temperature anomalies (open ocean) vs 1901-1930. The ochre trend, based on January 1900-July 2023 data, indicates that the latent heat tipping point was crossed in 2021 and the seafloor methane tipping point may be crossed by the end of 2033. Both trends extend into the future for 15 years, but the red trend is based on July 2008-July 2023 data and better reflects El Niño and other variables, and this red trend indicates that the latent heat tipping point was crossed in 2023 and the seafloor methane tipping point may be crossed later this year.

DJ, A look at https://forum.arctic-sea-ice.net/index.php/topic,3909.850.html#lastPost or https://forum.arctic-sea-ice.net/index.php/topic,3909.850.html#lastPost indicating Arctic Sea Ice level is dropping. If the last al Nino-year-2016- gives an indication we may see 2023 in a top 5 for lowest Arctic Sea Ice...Antarctic (Sea) Ice is far worse...https://forum.arctic-sea-ice.net/index.php/topic,1759.3700.html#lastPost or https://forum.arctic-sea-ice.net/index.php/topic,1759.3700.html#lastPost ...but at least for now-it is winter in Antarctica !!!-Antarctic ice is growing....

Do we get time to see major food crisis or is heat going up that fast it will kill billions within a few years...You need extreme heat (50C/120F +) over major urban area's for just a few hours to see lots of people die...So will it be Mexico City, Houston, Caïro, Istanbul....Or will Moscow, New York, Paris be hit with extreme high temperatures ?

"Wet Bulb" =35C + 100% humidity resulting overheating...killing people/animals within hours...But 50C can kill even with low humidity...

Another risk is in the higher temperatures get the greater the risk for fires starting because of ignition-point getting reached...Some trees -plant oil rich- could ignite by itself if exposed to full sunlight and extreme heat...(We did see that in Kuwait a few years ago...).

It may be impossible to get a grip on wildfires when temperatures are 50C+....There are limits to firefighters...Of course one should "plan" for fires...keep "empty zones" in between forests...to at least be able to contain fires...In cities reservoirs for extreme rain may be of use to cool cities during extreme heat...But you have to have reservoirs...

Just like many other crises not enough (by far !!!) is done to deal with the crises one can see coming...

https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ or https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ may indicate increase of hurricane risks...Major storms can transport hot air with high humidity to places not used to such conditions...Hitting a major city would be bad...but you also do not want 30C and lots of (hot !!!) rain over Greenland (or Antarctic !) ice....

Paul Beckwith (with Shackleton-old cat) discussing another-alarming-climate study;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-YobPD8D_E or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-YobPD8D_E ;

James Hansen is arguably the giant of all climate scientists. I was very fortunate to meet him a few years ago at a COP climate conference, and chat with him on a CEF (Climate Emergency Forum) video. He has just published a new paper on updates on the climate system: http://www.columbia.edu/~jeh1/mailing...

This paper is vitally important in giving us a clear picture of what we can expect in the next few years. A confluence of factors is driving up global average temperatures of the atmosphere and oceans and we can expect warming and climate extremes to notch up to much higher record setting levels.

We ain’t seen nothing yet.

We are only getting a taste this summer of what is to come in the next year or two.

1) Average global temperatures trended upwards at 0.18 degrees C per decade before 2010. With less aerosol forcing, since 2010 to now it has risen between 0.27 and 0.36 degrees C (this was all in the previous paper “Global Warming in the Pipeline”)

2) We can expect an additional rise from El Niño; it is really just getting started. A super El Niño will easily drive global average temperatures well above 1.5 C perhaps later this year but highly probably for 2024. El Niño is much more powerfully warming the planet in the year after it starts, so in 2024 since it started this year.

3) Solar irradiation is peaking soon, and basically adds a forcing of +0.1 W per m**2 on top of everything else.

4) We are missing a vast area of sea ice around Antarctica, but Antarctica is still in its winter darkness. Come Fall and Winter for Northern Hemisphere dwellers, the sun rises in the Southern Hemisphere and the huge extra area of dark open ocean around Antarctica will absorb huge amounts of extra sunlight.

5) The Earth Energy Imbalance was 0.6 W or m**2 ten years ago (400,000 Hiroshima bombs a day) but is now 1.22 W per m**2 (more than double; namely 800,000 Hiroshima bombs per day).

It is already rapidly rising and the additional effects listed above will greatly accelerate the rise.

As a result of this unfortunate confluence of events, we can expect the global climate turmoil in the last few months to substantially worsen. When it does, expect the media and mainstream scientists and politicians to espouse their excuses and concerns, but none of that matters if they do not slash fossil fuels.

Last week Lahaina in Hawaii was incinerated and 1400 people are still missing (I think they have returned to ashes and dust), and just today 90-95% of the town of Enterprise in Canada’s Northwest Territories has incinerated.

Global floods are ongoing, heatwaves are killing countless people, and global governments just don’t give a damn, since they are subsidizing fossil fuels at record high levels. And the world goes on, at least for most people.

Please donate to http://PaulBeckwith.net to support my research and videos as I document and explain why our planet is dying.

https://www.zerohedge.com/economics/why-rome-collapsed-lessons-present or https://www.zerohedge.com/economics/why-rome-collapsed-lessons-present ;

There is persuasive evidence that tribes from Central Asia moved westward into Europe in response to climate change--reduced rainfall led to less fodder for horses and less food for humans, forcing the move to the relative abundance of Europe.

In effect, climate change doomed Rome by unleashing such massive waves of Barbarian migration that it could no longer manage or repel the Barbarian armies.

In summary, Rome became dependent on the Barbarians for its military might while treating them with social distain, and mismanaging the integration of Barbarians, a task it had handled so admirably in an ad hoc but practical manner.

What can we learn from this complex history of unfolding polycrises?

We can start by observing how climate change (regardless of its source), pandemics, mass migrations, the hollowing out of the money supply, over-extended military commitments, the rise of new threats, declines in harvests and grain supplies, the hubris of ruling elites and extremes of wealth-power inequality all feed off of and reinforce each other.

Put another way, polycrisis is endemic to complex, interconnected systems. If the problems were limited to 1+1+1+1+1=5, the empire could maintain its coherence and adapt in ways to resolve the multiple overlapping crises.

But emergent systems--that is, complex, interconnected systems--are not just a collection of dynamics; the resulting polycrisis has its own dynamics and unique features that are distinct from the features of the five sub-crises. In other words, 1+1+1+1+1=15, and the system / empire is overwhelmed and collapses.

This is why polycrises are different from existential crises: the system could handle one, two or even three crises with its existing resources and structures, but a fourth anf fifth crises changes the nature of the threat.

As a thought experiment, consider how World War II might have gone for the US if:

1) the US hadn't been the world's leading producer of oil, steel, etc.

2) a pandemic had ravaged the young generation needed to expand the military.

3) The Dust Bowl had expanded to include the entire grain-growing Midwest of the US.

Even the most capable leaders still need a productive workforce, a population youthful and healthy enough to staff a military, access to essential resources and cooperative weather / food supplies.

Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius had to auction off the imperial treasure to raise desperately needed cash to fund an expanded military, but he had the treasure, manpower, resources, legacy organization and values to manage the multiple crises he faced as emperor. It was no easy task, hence his Stoicism.

But he still had the foundations of Roman power, both soft and hard power, and enough remained of traditional values and stored wealth to support the necessary adaptation and mustering of resources.

As resources are depleted and climate change disrupts the few breadbaskets of the world, which nations will have the foundations of values, organization, resources, human capital and wealth to survive polycrises?

In my book Global Crisis, National Renewal, I argue that no nation clinging to the current "waste is growth / landfill economy" will survive the emergent global polycrisis. Only those nations that embrace degrowth and a set of values other than maximizing financial gains for the elites will have the means necessary to adapt and emerge not just as survivors but as more adaptable and resilient.

DJ, denial of problems, kicking lots of cans down many streets-only buying time-at increasing exponential costs...If "politics" today is going this way there will be no tomorrow.....Do we really need to hit the concrete wall ???

A few news items;

Hawaii wildfires may have killed up to 67 citizens+ ...the fires went that fast authorities did not find ways to warn a lot of people in time...Very strong and dry winds-high temperatures did increase the fires...

In Georgia (between Russia and Türkiye-SE Europe) landslides after heavy rain may have killed 24 people...with still a lot of people missing...

In Valencia-Spain temperatures did reach 46,8C -3,4C higher than a previous record-in a third Spanish/Potugal heatwave

Lots of wildfires; Canada, Portugal, Greece, Russia...

https://forum.arctic-sea-ice.net/ or https://forum.arctic-sea-ice.net/ the "bigger picture" is "Polar problems"...both in Arctic/Greenland, Antarctica and a "third pole" in the Himalayas...source of water for the billions living in a major part of Asia...

According to James Hansen, even if we ceased the burning of all fossil fuels today, the huge amount of excess heat that has already been absorbed by the earth's oceans will eventually result in a global average temperature about 10°C (18°F) above preindustrial levels.
I will not be around to see it.  Sadly, we are still doing nothing of importance with respect to removing Greenhouse Gases from the planet.

all that is left -like in other man made crises- is damage control...

https://cosmosmagazine.com/earth/australia-sleepwalks-into-bushfire-season/ or https://cosmosmagazine.com/earth/australia-sleepwalks-into-bushfire-season/ ;

For Australians, the reports inevitably bring back memories of our awful Black Summer in 2019-20. Like the Maui tragedy, those huge, uncontrollable bushfires were a terrifying glimpse of the intense fires we can expect as climate change worsens.

Global warming – the result of fossil fuel burning – means bushfires will become more frequent and severe. Of course, we must reduce greenhouse gas emissions. That is blindingly obvious.

But we must do more than that. Australians must urgently adapt to our fiery future.

The Maui fires have been fuelled by strong winds, dry vegetation and low humidity. People were forced to run into the ocean for safety. Hundreds of structures have been damaged or ruined and many people are injured.

Hawaii is not the only part of the northern hemisphere being ravaged by fire.

-

The southern hemisphere is also experiencing highly unusual conditions. Antarctica is struggling to freeze over; it’s reportedly missing a chunk of ice bigger than Greenland.

And Australia is experiencing an unseasonably warm winter. The country looks set for a hot, dry, El Nino-fuelled summer, putting fire crews on high alert.

-

Australia, too, is fast becoming a continent of more uncontrolled fire.

Let’s compare the period of 1988 to 2001, with the period 2002 to 2018. In Australian forests, the average annual burned area in the second period was 350% greater than in the first. If we include 2019 – the year the Black Summer fires began – the increase rises to 800%.

The Black Summer fires were started by lightning and human activity. They were fuelled by extreme heat, record low rainfall and widespread dieback of vegetation. It meant the fires burned at unprecedented intensity.

-

When the bushfire royal commission handed down its report in October 2020, I described it as a “clarion call for change”. Finally, Australia had a map for its journey toward adapting to fires and other natural disasters.

The scope of the commission’s recommendations was vast. For governments alone, it called for changes across land-use planning, infrastructure, emergency management, social policy, agriculture, education, physical and mental health, community development, energy and the environment.

The commission also called for an acknowledgement of the role of Indigenous fire managers in mitigating bushfire risks.

Almost three years on, we haven’t seen the changes needed. We’re behaving as if we’ve got an endless amount of time. Australia is sleepwalking into our fiery future.

The pandemic shows humans are amazingly adaptable. We used an integrated approach to mitigate and adapt to that threat. We need an equivalent response to adapt to fire and climate change – but it’s just not happening.

There is much Australia can do to adapt to fire. We can improve our urban planning regimes and building standards. We can better manage fuel loads in our forests. We can increase our firefighting capacity and get much better at bushfire preparation and early warning systems.

And importantly, we should draw on Indigenous knowledge and the expertise of Aboriginal communities. These approaches could prove vital not only managing extreme fires in Australia, but elsewhere in the world.

DJ, using (ignoring ) the pandemic as an example may not be the strongest point...

One thing Australians can all agree on is that we don’t want catastrophically uncontrolled fires.

As our Black Summer showed, these fires not only destroy lives, homes and biodiversity. They actually threaten the Earth’s systems. Black Summer pumped huge amounts of carbon into the atmosphere. It depleted the ozone layer. It created an algal bloom in the Southern Ocean bigger than the Australian continent.

It’s vital that we slash greenhouse gas emissions as quickly as possible, to stabilise Earth’s climate. But that’s not sufficient. Australians have to adapt to fire, too.

The fires in Hawaii remind Australians that our summer is just around the corner. We don’t have much time.

David Bowman, Professor of Pyrogeography and Fire Science, University of Tasmania

DJ...so inaction WILL result in Australia dealing with wild fires coming months....

The heat, drought, in combination with "global developments" may change Australia, New Zealand as "part of the west"...Instead of moving to Australia, New Zealand people may start moving away from these countries...leaving it to mining, extensive farming...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

Arctic Ocean heating up

The water of the Arctic Ocean is heating up in several ways.

1.
Firstly, the water of the Arctic Ocean heats up as it receives direct heat from sunlight.

-

2. Hot water from rivers ending in the Arctic Ocean is another way the water is heating up.

-

3. Yet another way heat is entering the Arctic Ocean is from oceans

-

Feedbacks and further developments

More generally, the rapid temperature rise threatens to cause numerous feedbacks to accelerate and further developments to occur such as crossing of tipping points, with the danger that the temperature will keep rising.

DJ- Ice on the poles keep Earth at a certain temperature...the speed in wich ice is melting indicates a human factor. I think it is already to late to avoid a very major disaster...

A nuclear war would represent the ultimate outcome of tribalism, nationalism, racism and war, the human propensity for mutual and self-destruction. There was a time when kings and generals would fall on their sword when they were defeated, or when their faith in their gods collapsed. Nowadays oblivious or non-caring world powers continue to proliferate nuclear weapons on hair trigger alert, mine coal and pump oil and gas, starting a greenhouse chain reaction. Leaders, so-called, opportunistically betray the defence of their own people and the future of their children. The voices of anti-nuclear and climate scientists have become subdued, ignored or betrayed. There may not be too many historians to document the 20-21หขแต— centuries crimes against humanity and against nature.

An explanation of the collapse of human society, dragging multiple species down with it, arises from Fermi’s Paradox, where the combination of technological achievements and an inherent killer instinct of some leads to collapse.

DJ, Do "social media" spread stupidity ? I find it very hard to accept most of my fellow humans simply have become part of the problem...

With less ice pushing Greenland, Antarctica down seismic events will increase...the underlying landmass will move up. Also methane from melting permafrost further worsening the unfolding crisis...

DJ-I think we are "beyond hope" but I would LOVE to be very wrong !

We do not need nuclear global war to end humans...a mix of climate collapse, social collapse, pandemics may kill most of us...

http://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2023/07/wet-bulb-globe-temperature-tipping-point.html or http://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2023/07/wet-bulb-globe-temperature-tipping-point.html ;

High Wet Bulb Globe Temperatures (WBGT) are forecast to hit Louisiana, United States, over the next few days. The image below shows a forecast for August 2, 2023, 18 UTC, with WBGT as high as 35°C forecast for a location 10 miles South East of Abbeville, Louisiana, U.S.

WBGT is a measure used by weather.gov to warn about expected heat stress when in direct sunlight. It takes into account the effect of temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and solar radiation on humans.

As temperatures and humidity levels keep rising, a tipping point can be reached where the wind factor no longer matters, in the sense that wind can no longer provide cooling. The human body can cool itself by sweating, which has a physiological limit that was long described as a 35°C wet-bulb temperature. Once the wet-bulb temperature reaches 35°C, one can no longer lose heat by perspiration, even in strong wind, but instead one will start gaining heat from the air beyond a wet-bulb temperature of 35°C.

Accordingly, a 35°C wet-bulb temperature (equal to 95°F at 100% humidity or 115°F at 50% humidity) was long seen as the theoretical limit, the maximum a human could endure.

2020 study (by Raymond et al.) warns that this limit could be regularly exceeded with a temperature rise of less than 2.5°C (compared to pre-industrial). A 2018 study (by Strona & Bradshaw) indicates that most life on Earth will disappear with a 5°C rise. Humans, who depend for their survival on many other species, will likely go extinct with a 3°C rise.

Conclusion

Imminence alone could make that the danger constituted by rising temperatures needs to be acted upon immediately, comprehensively and effectively. While questions may remain regarding probability, severity and timescale of the dangers associated with climate change, the precautionary principle should prevail and this should prompt for action, i.e. comprehensive and effective action to reduce damage and improve the situation is imperative and must be taken as soon as possible. To combat rising temperatures, transforming society is needed, along the lines of this 2022 post in combination with declaration of a climate emergency.

Chinese authorities on Tuesday earmarked 110 million yuan (about $15.35 million) from the central natural disaster relief fund to support rescue and relief work in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region recently hit by torrential rain.

The emergency fund was jointly allocated by the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Emergency Management.

Eleven were killed, including two who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty in the rainstorms and flooding in Beijing, and another 27 were missing as of Tuesday morning.

About 45,000 people in 13 districts in the capital city were severely impacted and 127,000 were evacuated. Economic losses are being calculated, according to municipal authority.

The rainstorm hit western, southern and southwestern Beijing the hardest since July 29. As of Tuesday morning, the average precipitation reached 257.9mm. Suburban Mentougou and Fangshang districts, the two suffered severest flooding, saw precipitation of 470.2mm and 414.6mm.

The rainfall intensity has far exceeded the level of July 21, 2012 when 79 lives were claimed across Beijing, half in Fangshan district.

The peak rainfall recorded more than 700mm at two weather stations, while the peak rainfall in 2012 stood at 541mm.

Beijing’s annual average precipitation is 644mm.

Some trains passing Beijing West Station and Fengtai Station have been suspended, and the power and telecommunication have not resumed in Mentougou district as of press time.

Beijing is intensifying efforts in disaster relief by employing PLA helicopters to airdrop essential supplies and transfer stranded residents. The city is also collaborating with neighboring Tianjin Municipality and Hebei Province in flood control by discharging floodwaters into available reservoirs.

Robert Oppenheimer's conflicted feelings about the weapons of mass destruction he helped unleash on the world, and how officials ignored those concerns after World War II as the Cold War started an arms race. Journalist Greg Mitchell says that while the film is well made and worth seeing, "the omissions are quite serious." He says there is little mention of the dangers of radiation and no focus on the impact of the bomb on its victims in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The film also does not question the necessity of using the bomb in the first place, upholding the "official narrative … that has held sway since 1945," says Mitchell.

Counter-offensive reboot. Regime change in Moscow still the goal

DJ....there are claims there is still "diplomacy" between the US and Russia; former diplomats telling the Russian government two things;

-Putin has to go

-Russia has to break ties with China

Somehow western "politics/media" are surprised "US diplomacy" is not a success for the NATO-west...With j.biden increasingly in legal problems-even with the US "justice department" trying to ignore all the evidence against the "biden crime family"...v.-f..k the EU-nuland did get promoted....She will be telling blinken what to do...or does she de facto run the US ?

Addressing the African leaders, the Russian president said: "Your approach, your ideas - all this echoes the points of the Chinese peace plan for Ukrainian settlement, presented in February"

DJ...however the real problem is a US run by the insane ...with lots of nuclear weapons...The major job -for BRICS, EU, US citizens,- is to get someone with some intellect running the US...

The US is pumping weapons into Taiwan-part of China...Russia-Iran-China may increase "military cooperation" with Cuba, Nicaragua, Venezuela...

I do discuss this in NATO-BRICS conflict but the insanity in "NATO-land" only seems to get worse...with another Ukraine army destroyed...It may be not "if" but "when" will j.biden go nuclear ?

I expand on my last video on the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) Shitdown and Catastrophic Consequences to Humanity. The key chain of events is as follows….                                             1) Global warming hole south of Greenland and warming water off East coast of North America, isotopic analyses of sediments, physical monitoring of ocean column, and other proxies all show that the AMOC has slowed significantly, and ocean water currents comprising AMOC are the slowest in the last 1000 years.  2) Nonlinear physics analyses shows that probability of AMOC shutdown between 2025 and 2095 is 95%, with highest likelihood by around 2050. 3) AMOC shutdown would basically cool northern hemisphere and warm southern hemisphere. 4) High Arctic north of Canadian Archipelago, Greenland, and Scandinavian countries would cool as much as 8C, Western Europe would cool 2 to 3 C, and eastern Canada by 1 to 2C. Southern hemisphere by Latin America and western African coast would warm by 2 to 3 C.  5) With ITCZ (Intertropical Convergence Zone) shifting from just north of equator to just south of equator, precipitation would increase up to 100% around 15 degrees S latitude and decrease this amount at 15 degrees N latitude. 6) Dynamic sea level change would be large. Between Antarctica and southern tips of South America and Australia, sea level would drop a foot, Gulf of Mexico to Mediterranean would increase a foot, high Arctic would rise as much as 3 to 9 feet.

DJ but also the effects on sea-life will be very dramatic....CO2 absorption via algae would decrease...

PB also discusses extreme hail storms in lots of places...Here in NL we have now several weeks BELOW !!! average temperatures...The "weirding" is increasing...

Consistent with the World Socialist Web Site’s (WSWS) warnings of a summer surge of COVID infections as evidenced by wastewater levels of SARS-CoV-2, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported this week that hospitalizations due to infections with the coronavirus were up by more than 10 percent across the country.

These have also been substantiated by the rise in emergency room visits for COVID-19 from 0.49 percent of all visits in June to 0.73 percent of all visits presently, an increase of nearly 50 percent. In absolute numbers, for the week of July 15, 2023, COVID-19 admissions had risen to 7,109 from 6,444 the week prior, an increase of 11 percent.

Although these levels remain far below last year’s at this time, during the second eruption of Omicron infections, when hospital admissions had reached more than 44,000 per week, estimates suggest that current rates will triple by late August, thus reaching half the peak of last summer.

The evidence for the surge has been corroborated by the rise in the positivity rate in PCR testing which has climbed from 4.1 percent last month to 6.3 percent in July. One must assume these figures underrepresent the real magnitude of infections as most people rely on home RAT tests, which are far less accurate, or have abandoned testing altogether.

Even the World Health Organization (WHO) has acknowledged that “some countries continue to report high burdens of COVID-19, including increases in newly reported cases and, more importantly, increase in hospitalizations and deaths—the latter of which are considered more reliable indicators given the reductions in testing.” The international health agency noted that globally, over 836,000 new COVID-19 cases and over 4,500 deaths were reported in the last 28 days (June 19 to July 16, 2023).

DJ..."the pandemic is over" ..."we hardly see any new cases"...Well...you do NOT want to see new cases so you STOPPED testing....Politics/media playing hide and seek...https://twitter.com/CoronaHeadsUp or https://twitter.com/CoronaHeadsUp has lots of info on CoViD cases increasing again in the US, Australia...H5N1 spreading in mammals...(with some media citing "experts" claiming "low risks" for "most"....)

The exponential factor..in wars -not stopped-, climate collapse -not stopped-, health crises -not stopped- should be clear enough...we are killing ourselves...this is the end game...

Enjoy the good moments for now...try to "limit damage" the best you can...(and by now I do not know if "voting" makes much of a difference...here in NL also "political parties" became a sub-culture out of contact with society...(here in NL we may have over 2 million 80+ y/o in a population of 18-20 million...and -yes- that is a problem ! "Politics" here only have a few parties that realy want to invest in care...We need people to stay healthy longer !)

In the CCAG video also 35C and 100% humidity can kill you within hours...because heat can not find a way out of your body if you can not cool it with water, air-co etc. Food, higher sea level, may be the longer term problems...

Bonn and Geneva, 27/07/2023 (Copernicus and WMO) - According to ERA5 data from the EU-funded Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), the first three weeks of July have been the warmest three-week period on record and the month is on track to be the hottest July and the hottest month on record. These temperatures have been related to heatwaves in large parts of North America, Asia and Europe, which along with wildfires in countries including Canada and Greece, have had major impacts on people’s health, the environment and economies.

« We don’t have to wait for the end of the month to know this. Short of a mini-Ice Age over the next days, July 2023 will shatter records across the board, » said United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.

« According to the data released today, July has already seen the hottest three-week period ever recorded; the three hottest days on record; and the highest-ever ocean temperatures for this time of year, » Mr Guterres told journalists at UN headquarters in New York.

« For vast parts of North America, Asia, Africa and Europe – it is a cruel summer. For the entire planet, it is a disaster. And for scientists, it is unequivocal – humans are to blame.
All this is entirely consistent with predictions and repeated warnings. The only surprise is the speed of the change, » said Mr Guterres.

On July 6, the daily average global mean surface air temperature surpassed the record set in August 2016, making it the hottest day on record, with July 5 and July 7 shortly behind. The first three weeks of July have been the warmest three-week period on record. Global mean temperature temporarily exceeded the 1.5° Celsius threshold above preindustrial level during the first and third week of the month (within observational error). Since May, the global average sea surface temperature* has been well above previously observed values for the time of the year; contributing to the exceptionally warm July.It is extremely likely that July 2023 will be the hottest July and also the hottest month on record, following on from the hottest June on record. According to ERA5 data the previous hottest month on record was July 2019. Complete ERA5 data for July will be available and published by C3S in their upcoming monthly bulletin on August 8.

It is extremely likely that July 2023 will be the hottest July and also the hottest month on record, following on from the hottest June on record

DJ, CO2 and some other gasses in the atmosphere are able to store heat "better". Ocean water so far did absorp over 90% of increased heat...at a certain moment the sea water heat will increase heating up the atmosphere also...A turning point can result in coastal area's getting warmer than inland area's...

Overheating may kill lots of people and animals soon...

However; El Nino may increase shear winds limiting hurricane formation on the Atlantic. Also sahara-dust over the Atlantic also could limit extreme storms...Both sahara-dust and wild fire smoke do worsen air quality.

With tens of millions of people dealing with long CoViD health issues worsening air quality may further increase excess deaths.

Wildfires in a.o. Greece, Algeria, Tunesia resulting in mass evacuations of both tourists and population-destroying tourism...But also destroying agriculture, forests, wildlife...Temperatures often 40C+...some places may even see 50C+...wind, drought, create an explosive mixture...

A level 3 was issued across Austria, Northwest Hungary, and western Slovakia mainly for damaging winds and very large hail, and to a lesser extent for very heavy rainfall.

A level 3 was issued across northern Italy, northern Slovenia, and extreme southern Austria for very large to giant hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes, and to a lesser extent for very heavy rainfall.

A level 2 was issued across a larger area surrounding the level 3 for all hazards, particularly large hail, and severe wind.

a data dive reveals parts of Greenland have record setting melt losses

DJ, 3 km thick ice may push parts of Greenland 1 km downward...Less ice pressure may not only result in "lifting" of the underlying landmass-creating seismic activity...very likely also volcanic activity could get more chances...So far the increase of Greenland ice melt did add <1 mm per year to sea level rise...Melting ice reaching the ocean did see the sea around Greenland getting colder...this year influx of warm ocean water is enough to undo the influx of meltwater in sea temperatures...

There should be no doubt that rapid "climate change" will worsen health for many species increasing even more pandemic risks...

Scientists have estimated, through reconstructions based on evidence gathered via ice cores, tree rings and sediment deposits, that the current surge in heating has already brought global temperatures to levels not seen on Earth since about 125,000 years ago, before the last ice age.

“We quite possibly are already living in a climate that no human has lived through before and we are certainly living in a climate that no human has lived in since before the birth of agriculture,” said Bob Kopp, a climate scientist at Rutgers University.

Should global temperatures rise by a further 1C or more, which is widely predicted to happen by the end of the century barring a drastic reduction in emissions, Huber said Hansen was “broadly correct” that the world will be plunged into the sort of warmth not seen since 1-3m years ago, a period of time called the Pliocene.

“That is a radically different world,” said Huber of an epoch in which it was warm enough for beech trees to grow near the south pole and sea levels were about 20 meters higher than now, which would today drown most coastal cities.

A look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_population#Ancient_and_post-classical_history or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_population#Ancient_and_post-classical_history

Estimates of the population of the world at the time agriculture emerged in around 10,000 BC have ranged between 1 million and 15 million.[16][17] Even earlier, genetic evidence suggests humans may have gone through a population bottleneck of between 1,000 and 10,000 people about 70,000 BC, according to the now largely discredited Toba catastrophe theory. By contrast, it is estimated that around 50–60 million people lived in the combined eastern and western Roman Empire in the 4th century AD.[18]

The Plague of Justinian caused Europe's population to drop by around 50% between the 6th and 8th centuries AD.[19] The population of Europe was more than 70 million in 1340.[20] From 1340 to 1400, the world's population fell from an estimated 443 million to 350–375 million,[21] with the Indian subcontinent suffering the most tremendous loss and Europe suffering the Black Death pandemic;[22] it took 200 years for European population figures to recover.[23] The population of China decreased from 123 million in 1200 to 65 million in 1393,[24] presumably from a combination of Mongol invasions, famine, and plague.[25]

The fast rise in global warming manifested by current extreme weather events betrays a dangerous underestimation of the Earth’s liveable climate, while governments ignore climate science, claim to set limits on domestic emissions, but allow major export of fossil fuels and emissions worldwide on a scale threatening life on Earth.

With current policies, there appear to exist few limits on global carbon emissions, as reported by Rogner (1997)“The global fossil resource base is abundant and is estimated at approximately 5000 Gt (billion tons). Compared to current global primary energy use of some 10 Gt per year, this amount is certainly sufficient to fuel the world economy through the twenty-first century”.

According to these estimates, future production of coal, oil and gas render a mass extinction of advanced species more than likely.

https://nltimes.nl/2023/07/20/nl-gets-2-tropical-days-every-degree-warming-mediterranean-warming-alarmingly or https://nltimes.nl/2023/07/20/nl-gets-2-tropical-days-every-degree-warming-mediterranean-warming-alarmingly ;

The Netherlands gets two extra tropical days for every degree of global warming, the meteorological institute KNMI reported on Thursday, one day after the Spanish weather institute Aemet raised the alarm about the increasing temperatures of the Mediterranean Sea.

Spain is in the midst of its third heatwave this year. The average temperature of the Mediterranean Sea at the Spanish coast reached 24.6 degrees this month - 2.2 degrees higher than typical for this time of year, Aemet reported. The seawater in Spain hasn’t been this hot since measurements started in 1940.

The Netherlands has had three tropical days - when thermometers top 30 degrees Celsius at the national weather station in De Bilt - so far this summer. A hundred years ago, the average was one tropical day per summer. Now it’s already 4.5, the KNMI said.

“A relatively small warming causes a relatively rapid increase in the number of hot days,” the KNMI said. Summers in the Netherlands have become 2 degrees warmer. “The number of tropical days has increased by more than a factor of four.”

The increase in hot days can be seen throughout Europe and is currently very visible in Spain with its third heatwave. Weather agency Aemet stressed that the record for the warmest seawater wasn’t broken by a little. It was broken by a lot, spokesperson Ruben del Campo told the press agency AFP. The previous record was 24 degrees Celsius in 2015. The new record is 24.6, and the summer is far from over.

Looking at averages doesn’t make you realize the whole story, ecologist Anieke van Leeuwen of the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) told NOS. “If you only look at the average, it seems like small values. But an average goes up because there are more days with much higher temperatures. And places that are much warmer. With the climate crisis we are in now, extremes are becoming more and more common.”

In the southeast of Spain, sea temperatures have risen to 28 degrees in some places. The measuring point near the Balearic Islands even recorded 29 degrees. The high water temperatures have a significant impact on marine life. But outside the water, it also means that ambient temperatures cool down very little at night.

“If we want to limit a further increase in heat, greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced and CO2 must be removed from the air,” the KNMI stressed.

DJ...and we do NOT !!!! have the technology to remove CO2 from the air on any major scale other than trees....

With atmospheric COโ‚‚ levels reaching 423 parts per million, according to James Hansen and colleagues humanity is facing a new Frontier, marked by intense heatwaves, more than vindicating warnings by climate scientists over the last 40 years or so. Within less than a century, the levels of COโ‚‚ and temperatures have risen to levels of the Miocene (23.03–5.33 million years ago), with implications for sea level rise (Spratt, 2023). Hominids, living during glacial to inter-glacial periods, rarely had to endure mean temperatures higher than 50°C, which are increasingly common at present. Governments, busy subsidizing new coal mines and oil and gas wells and arming to the teeth for nuclear war, appear to be oblivious to the lessons of the last great world wars.

we need a "revolution" to avoid the "end game scenario" if that still is possible...

There was a time when kings and generals would fall on their sword when they were defeated, or when their faith in their gods collapsed. Nowadays so-called leaders, assuming opportunistic positions, betray the defence of their own people and of nature, protecting or advancing their own careers. The voices of climate scientists have become subdued, ignored or non-existent. There may not be too many historians to document the 20-21หขแต— centuries crimes against humanity and against nature.
DJ, climate crisis=food crisis= health crisis= global war... It is all linked !

A tsunami advisory issued after a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck off the coast of Alaska late Saturday has since been canceled, officials said.

The earthquake hit offshore about 55 miles southwest from Sand Point, Alaska, at a depth of 13 mi. on Saturday around 10:48 p.m. local (2:48 โ€ฏa.m. ET), according to the US Tsunami Warning Center.

The quake prompted a brief tsunami warning for parts of Alaska near the Aleutian islands, extending from Unimak Pass to Kennedy Entrance, before being revised to a tsunami advisory. A small tsunami was later observed up to 0.5 feet in elevation at Sand Point and King Cove, Alaska.

There is no tsunami threat for other Pacific coasts in the US and Canada, the advisory said.

The Alaska Volcano Observatory provided a threat notice for the Shishaldin volcano after it sent up a plume of ash earlier Saturday, according to a social media post.

There is a “watch” currently in effect for the Shishaldin volcano. According to the observatory, seismic tremor aptitudes began to increase at around 5 p.m. local.

DJ, what part of this quake may have climate collapse links ? Or is there no link at all ?

Another "claim" is one could expect a "major" earthquake to see a follow up on the other side of the globe...What could be seen here as "the other side of the globe"? New Zealand-Fiji is "only south" ...south part of the Pacific ring of fire...Will South Africa region see some sort of reaction ?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqzQpdhwPjY or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqzQpdhwPjY El Nino may bring lots of wind shear to the Atlantic-different winds at different heights. Also Sahara-dust/dry air could hinder formation of hurricanes...But there could be signs el Nino is not that strong-resulting in less wind shear...increasing risks record hot ocean waters will feed major hurricanes this season..And the long term trend is hurricanes go from West Africa to the US/central America and some of them may go north and then move east towards Greenland/Europe...So the chances for Western Europe being affected by an Atlantic hurricane is growing...it may also increase heat transport towards the Arctic...
