DJ-Pandemics have to be linked to their backgrounds. Without World War 1 the Spanish Flu very likely could have been limited. Also the Black Death has links with both wars and climate changes...both the end of the West- and East Roman empires have pandemic links...

Climate "change/collapse" will bring both more extreme weather and earthquakes.

Weather http://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2023/04/ipcc-keeps-downplaying-the-danger-even-as-reality-strikes.html or http://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2023/04/ipcc-keeps-downplaying-the-danger-even-as-reality-strikes.html ;

As illustrated by the above image, the daily sea surface temperature (SST) between 60°South and 60°North was at a record high on April 2, 2023, i.e. the highest temperature in the NOAA record that started in 1981.

This record high sea surface temperature comes as we're moving into a new El Niño, as illustrated by the image on the right, adapted from NOAA.

DJ, to keep it short and simple-higher sea surface temperatures bring more/stronger storms now hitting the US, a very bad monsoon-with flooding in South Asia...

It also brings less ice pushing down the underlying earth on Greenland, Antarctica, several other parts of the globe-resulting in an increase of seismic events.

PLEASE Like & Share these videos to your Social Media Platforms. it Helps more then you know and please tell me your thoughts! SOURCE LINKS BELOW!  In many cases in the past when an earthquake of this depth takes place we see larger more shallow Quakes take place within about 2-3 days so This also an Earthquake Warning.

There may be some statistics linking deep quakes with stronger shallow quakes later on...however it does not seem to be the "law"....

Of course major natural disasters in pandemic times are a bad combination...

Pre-season forecasts[edit]

On December 6, 2022, TSR released the first early prediction for the 2023 Atlantic season, predicting a slightly below average year with 13 named storms, 6 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes.[3] Their updated prediction on April 6, 2023, called for a similar number of hurricanes and major hurricanes, but reduced the number of named storms by one.[4] The following day, the University of Arizona (UA) posted their forecast for a very busy season featuring 19 named storms, 9 hurricanes, 5 major hurricanes, and an ACE index of 163 units.[5] On April 13, CSU researchers released their prediction of 13 named storms, 6 hurricanes, 2 major hurricanes, and an ACE index of 100 units.[10] Also on April 13, TWC posted their forecast for 2023, calling for 15 named storms, 7 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes.[7] While most organizations expressed growing confidence in the development of an El Niño, which typically suppresses Atlantic hurricane activity, TWC, UA and CSU in particular noted that well above average ocean temperatures in the Atlantic basin could yield greater activity, particularly if a weaker El Niño event materializes.[6]

Retired names, if any, will be announced by the World Meteorological Organization in the spring of 2024. The names not retired from this list will be used again in the 2029 season. This is the same list used in the 2017 season, with the exceptions of HaroldIdaliaMargot, and Nigel, which replaced HarveyIrmaMaria, and Nate, respectively.

DJ...record high sea surface temperatures could result in more storms...However past seasons did see a lot of sand being transported from Africa-Sahara over the Atlantic limiting storms...Also dry air could mean lower risk of flooding...with more extreme rain events maybe less linked to hurricanes...

DJ-In the east of Ukraine lots of rain did see some Ukraine claims Russia is "using a weather weapon"....not that likely...Russia may have problems from that rain as well...

More rain in some areas could compensate for less snow in winter - keeping supply of water going on.

For this hurricane-weary Floridian, the news from NOAA that after nearly 3 years the Pacific ocean has transitioned from a La Niña to a neutral state, and appears poised to enter El Niño, is highly welcome.

While it won't guarantee I won't be forced to evacuate my humble abode (again) this summer, it does lower the chances.

Climate.gov describes this sea temperature oscillation as:

El Niño and La Niña are the warm and cool phases of a recurring climate pattern across the tropical Pacific—the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, or “ENSO” for short. The pattern shifts back and forth irregularly every two to seven years, bringing predictable shifts in ocean surface temperature and disrupting the wind and rainfall patterns across the tropics. These changes have a cascade of global side effects.

While its impacts are global, its impact on the Atlantic Hurricane season is described by NOAA as:

Simply put, El Niño favors stronger hurricane activity in the central and eastern Pacific basins, and suppresses it in the Atlantic basin (Figure 1). Conversely, La Niña suppresses hurricane activity in the central and eastern Pacific basins, and enhances it in the Atlantic basin (Figure 2).

The caveat being that 1992 was an El Niño year, and it saw one of the most destructive hurricanes on record (Andrew) hit South Florida, during what was otherwise a lackluster hurricane season.  1969 was an active El Niño year, which saw CAT 5 hurricane Camille slam into the upper gulf coast.

Which is why I will still be preparing this summer the same as I do every year.

Temperatures have been rising fast in March 2023. The image below shows the Monthly Northern Hemisphere Land Temperature Anomaly up to March 2023, with two trends added. The blue trend, based on Jan.1850-Mar.2023 NOAA data, points at a 3°C rise in 2032. The magenta trend, based on Oct.2010-Mar.2023 NOAA data, better reflects variables such as El Niño and sunspots, and illustrates how they could trigger a rise of more than 5°C in 2026. Anomalies are versus 1901-2000 (not versus pre-industrial).

There is no tsunami threat to New Zealand after a magnitude 7.1 earthquake in the Pacific.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and GNS Science assessed the quake near the Kermadec Islands was unlikely to have caused a tsunami that would posed threat to New Zealand.

The earthquake struck at 12:42pm NZT, in the same vicinity as the magnitude 8.1 earthquake that struck on March 4, 2021, and prompted tsunami evacuations for large parts of the North Island.

NEMA said it was assessing whether the quake could affect New Zealand but gave its standard advice for people to move away from coastal areas if they felt a long or strong quake.

More details are coming in about an earthquake that struck Ishikawa Prefecture on the Sea of Japan coast. Authorities say that so far there have been no reports of damage from tsunami.

The quake struck around 2:42 p.m. on Friday, local time. It registered an upper 6 on the Japanese seismic scale of zero to 7 in the city of Suzu.

Long tremors that could rock high-rise buildings have been recorded in Ishikawa.

The class 3 tremors were felt in the city of Suzu. Experts say they can make it difficult for people to remain standing, and can even topple furniture.

Japan's Meteorological Agency calls this type of shaking "long-period ground motion." It affects people on higher floors.

Local authorities say they have received 2 reports that buildings have collapsed. Officials are trying to confirm the details.

A train operator in the region says that the Hokuriku Shinkansen bullet train service has been disrupted.

In2thinair https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g39__GGJlM0 or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g39__GGJlM0 linking it to solar activity...

Luke Holmquist is linking quakes with magnetic fields on Earth https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylsQFabLVqw or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylsQFabLVqw

DJ-Earth itself is a big magnete reacting to solar magnetic waves...it may be a factor in earthquakes...but certainly NOT the only factor...

----------------

Understanding complex events, quakes, weather/climate, pandemics, life may help limiting damage...Of course major earthquakes can be major killers...In Haïti a major quake also was followed by a cholera epidemic killing thousends (with the cholera imported from Nepal in mail for Nepalese-UN-peacekeepers trying to do a good job...).

The Spanish Flu did kill that many because World War 1 limited information/(international) action to limit spread...

There are lots of things we do not (yet) know of/on earthquakes...The largest ones go M (magnitude) 9 to 9,5 in recent history...that is the last 70 years or so...There is a lot of discussion on maximum quake-strength...An asteroid would be able to create an M.11+ ...could "end" this planet...(there is some discussion on moons being created as an outcome of asteroid strikes...).

It is very likely "tectonics" can create stronger then M9.5 quakes...upper limit M10 ? Tsunami's-mega waves-can move all over the planet-did so several times the last 25 years...Often the waves in most places do no/little damage...still can be measured...But in Japan, Indonesia tsunami's killed thousends...with waves killing people in East Africa...

--------------

We are allready in a lot of global chaos...Major earthquakes is the last thing we need...Less ice pushing down on Greenland, Antarctica etc. means the land under the ice is rising...it creates quakes...Volcanic activity and quakes also are linked...Major volcanic eruptions do cause food problems...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_Without_a_Summer or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_Without_a_Summer

The year 1816 is known as the Year Without a Summer because of severe climate abnormalities that caused average global temperatures to decrease by 0.4–0.7 °C (0.7–1 °F).[1] Summer temperatures in Europe were the coldest of any on record between the years of 1766 and 2000.[2] This resulted in major food shortages across the Northern Hemisphere.[3]

Evidence suggests that the anomaly was predominantly a volcanic winter event caused by the massive 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora in April in the Dutch East Indies (known today as Indonesia). This eruption was the largest in at least 1,300 years (after the hypothesized eruption causing the volcanic winter of 536); its effect in the climate may have been exacerbated by the 1814 eruption of Mayon in the Philippines.

We live in a complex system, pandemics are the outcome of a complex process...

A strong Magnitude 6.8 earthquake has just taken place 1528.1km southeast of East London, South Africa.  It took place at a shallow depth of only 10km.  Problem is, this is the approximate "Antipode" for the Cascadia Subduction Zone off Vancouver, Seattle, and much of northern California.

There is a school of thought that holds when a major earthquake takes place on one side of the world, it directly affects its "antipode" which is the precise location on the exact opposite side of the planet.

-

A Magnitude 5.6 earthquake has just taken place in the area of the Cascadia Subduction Zone, as mentioned possible in the story above!

DJ, when you look at statistics the idea of a quake seeing a reaction on the opposite side of the planet is not showing up in statistics...maybe some relations but ?

In December 2021, an eruption began on Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai, a submarine volcano in the Tongan archipelago in the southern Pacific Ocean.[6] The eruption reached a very large and powerful climax nearly four weeks later, on 15 January 2022.[7] Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai is 65 km (40 mi) north of Tongatapu, the country's main island,[8] and is part of the highly active Tonga–Kermadec Islands volcanic arc, a subduction zone extending from New Zealand to Fiji.[9][10] In the Volcanic Explosivity Index scale, the eruption was rated at least a VEI-5.[1][11] Described by scientists as a "magma hammer", the volcano at its height produced a series of four underwater thrusts, displaced 10 cubic kilometers of rock, ash and sediment, and generated the largest atmospheric explosion recorded by modern instrumentation.[7]

The eruption caused tsunamis in Tonga, Fiji, American SamoaVanuatu, and along the Pacific rim, including damaging tsunamis in New Zealand, Japan, the United States, the Russian Far East, Chile, and Peru. At least four people were killed, some were injured, and some remain possibly missing in Tonga from tsunami waves up to 20 m (66 ft) high. Tsunami waves with run-up heights up to 45 m (148 ft) struck the uninhabited island of Tofua. Two people drowned in Peru when 2 m (6 ft 7 in) waves struck the coast. It was the largest volcanic eruption since the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo, and the most powerful eruption since the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa.[12] NASA determined that the eruption was "hundreds of times more powerful" than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima.[13] The eruption was the largest explosion recorded in the atmosphere by modern instrumentation, far larger than any 20th century volcanic event or nuclear bomb test. It is thought that in recent centuries, only the Krakatoa eruption of 1883 rivalled the atmospheric disturbance produced.[14][15]

DJ, a major volcanic eruption will influence global weather, can be catastrophic...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supervolcano or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supervolcano ;

supervolcano is a volcano that has had an eruption with a Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) of 8, the largest recorded value on the index. This means the volume of deposits for such an eruption is greater than 1,000 cubic kilometers (240 cubic miles).[1]

Location of Yellowstone hotspot over time. Numbers indicate millions of years before the present.
Satellite image of Lake Toba, the site of a VEI 8 eruption c. 75,000 years ago
Cross-section through Long Valley Caldera

Supervolcanoes occur when magma in the mantle rises into the crust but is unable to break through it. Pressure builds in a large and growing magma pool until the crust is unable to contain the pressure and ruptures. This can occur at hotspots (for example, Yellowstone Caldera) or at subduction zones (for example, Toba).[2][3]

Large-volume supervolcanic eruptions are also often associated with large igneous provinces, which can cover huge areas with lava and volcanic ash. These can cause long-lasting climate change (such as the triggering of a small ice age) and threaten species with extinction. The Oruanui eruption of New Zealand's Taupō Volcano (about 26,500 years ago) was the world's most recent VEI-8 eruption.[4]

again...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_Loyalty_Islands_earthquake or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_Loyalty_Islands_earthquake ;

The 2021 Loyalty Islands earthquake was a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck offshore between Vanuatu and New Caledonia on February 11, 2021 at 00:19 local time. It is the 4th largest earthquake of 2021.

Tectonic setting[edit]

Located about 415 km to the east of the island of New Caledonia in the southwest Pacific Ocean occurred as the result of low angle thrust faulting on or near the plate boundary interface between the Indo-Australian and Pacific plates. Focal mechanism solutions indicate the earthquake occurred on either a shallow fault striking west and dipping to the north, or on a steep fault striking east. The earthquake was preceded by two foreshocks of M 6.1 and M 6.0 in the hour before the earthquake. At the location of this earthquake, the Indo-Australian plate moves towards the east-northeast with respect to the Pacific at a rate of approximately 75 mm/yr.

so does this exclude possible volcanic risks in that region/ring of fire ?

DJ, eruption is pressure release...

https://sciencestruck.com/relationship-between-earthquakes-volcanoes or https://sciencestruck.com/relationship-between-earthquakes-volcanoes ;

Earthquakes and volcanic activity are closely related to each other. In fact, earthquakes usually accompany a volcanic eruption. Similarly, unusual earthquakes can also lead to volcanic eruptions.

-

Similar to earthquakes, volcanic activity is observed when the plates are divergent (move apart) or convergent (move towards each other). In such plate movements, the magma present in the plate boundaries may rise to the Earth’s surface, leading to volcanic eruptions. Divergent plates may cause long volcanic rifts, whereas convergent plates result in individual volcanic eruptions.

In addition, both activities occur within a plate, which are referred to as intraplate earthquakes and volcanoes, respectively. It is estimated that about 10 percent of earthquakes are of this type.

Solar Storms & Earthquakes Once again!     So... We basically predicted a Caribbean Earthquake 2 days ago and here we sit with a 6.6 striking near Panama. The sun is producing yet MORE concerning sunspots that NOAA is expecting to become extremely active even within hours. This is going to be a trend we see moving forward. Typhoon MAYWAR may hit as fast at 190 MPH winds as it approaches Taiwan, All we can do is hope for the best.

DJ "Maywar" is expected to stop-move north before it reaches Taiwan...still may see windspeeds close to 200mph/320 kmh...extreme storm...

https://www.tropicaltidbits.com/storminfo/ or https://www.tropicaltidbits.com/storminfo/ following storms...first Atlantic storm may be forming however not hurricanes are expected yet...Sea Surface temperature in many places already hot...with El Nino forming it only will warm more...

This will translate into stronger storms/more rain-flooding...With also more droughts in other places...A mix of drought for months-then extreme rain-can bring a lot of destruction.

A.o. in NE Africa a famine may see millions of people starving...We can prevent it...but "we" rather spend trillions on weapons-wars...only getting a few very rich...

DJ-Since a "hot ocean" increases melt of polar ice and seafloor permafrost we may see more methane release...Part of that release could be "explosive"...

Also less land ice pushing Antarctica, Greenland, Himalaya down the underlying landmass will tend to rise...increasing seismic/volcanic risks...There are at least two volcanos in Antarctica...Less landice, warmer temperatures may increase volcanic risks there...

A major volcanic eruption may decrease global temperature -which may decrease further food production. This even further is worsening the already major food crisis...Also air quality could be at risk because of volcanic ash, wildfires...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsunami#Seismicity or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsunami#Seismicity ;

Tsunamis have a small wave height offshore, and a very long wavelength (often hundreds of kilometres long, whereas normal ocean waves have a wavelength of only 30 or 40 metres),[37] which is why they generally pass unnoticed at sea, forming only a slight swell usually about 300 millimetres (12 in) above the normal sea surface. They grow in height when they reach shallower water, in a wave shoaling process described below. A tsunami can occur in any tidal state and even at low tide can still inundate coastal areas.

On April 1, 1946, the 8.6 Mw  Aleutian Islands earthquake occurred with a maximum Mercalli intensity of VI (Strong). It generated a tsunami which inundated Hilo on the island of Hawaii with a 14-metre high (46 ft) surge. Between 165 and 173 were killed. The area where the earthquake occurred is where the Pacific Ocean floor is subducting (or being pushed downwards) under Alaska.

Examples of tsunamis originating at locations away from convergent boundaries include Storegga about 8,000 years ago, Grand Banks in 1929, and Papua New Guinea in 1998 (Tappin, 2001). The Grand Banks and Papua New Guinea tsunamis came from earthquakes which destabilised sediments, causing them to flow into the ocean and generate a tsunami. They dissipated before travelling transoceanic distances.

The cause of the Storegga sediment failure is unknown. Possibilities include an overloading of the sediments, an earthquake or a release of gas hydrates (methane etc.).

The 1960 Valdivia earthquake (Mw 9.5), 1964 Alaska earthquake (Mw 9.2), 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake (Mw 9.2), and 2011 Tōhoku earthquake (Mw9.0) are recent examples of powerful megathrust earthquakes that generated tsunamis (known as teletsunamis) that can cross entire oceans. Smaller (Mw 4.2) earthquakes in Japan can trigger tsunamis (called local and regional tsunamis) that can devastate stretches of coastline, but can do so in only a few minutes at a time.

DJ, A Tsunami is different than a "wind caused wave" in that a tsunami-"wave" has ALL of the water in movement...wind only causes waves on the surface...A tsunami can go very high speed (1,000 km/h) -involves a larger part of the ocean and may show itself when it reaches the shore...So it may NOT be a gigantic wave in the middle of an ocean !!!

Depending on the coastlines it hits it can do limited or very major damage...A NorthSea or New York tsunami does not need to be very major to do a lot of killing/damage...Japan, Indonesia did see urban area's being hit by a tsunami in recent history killing tens of thousends...

It is very likely history may have seen tsunami's far stronger....

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doggerland#Disappearance or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doggerland#Disappearance ;

A recent hypothesis suggests that around 6200 BCE much of the remaining coastal land was flooded by a tsunami caused by a submarine landslide off the coast of Norway known as the Storegga Slide. This suggests "that the Storegga Slide tsunami would have had a catastrophic impact on the contemporary coastal Mesolithic population ... Britain finally became separated from the continent and in cultural terms, the Mesolithic there goes its own way."[13] A study published in 2014 suggested that the only remaining parts of Doggerland at the time of the Storegga Slide were low-lying islands, but supported the view that the area had been abandoned at about the same time as the tsunamis.[4]

Another view speculates that the Storegga tsunami devastated Doggerland, but then ebbed back into the sea, and that later Lake Agassiz (in North America) burst, releasing so much fresh water that sea levels rose over about two years to flood much of Doggerland and make Great Britain an island.[14] The difference in distribution of broken shells between lower-lying and high-lying parts of the area also suggest survival of land after the Storegga tsunami.[15]

DJ, Doggerland was the link between the British Isles and NW Europe...now North Sea...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Saints%27_Flood_(1170) or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Saints%27_Flood_(1170) ;

The All Saints' Flood of 1170 (Allerheiligenvloed) was a catastrophic flood in the Netherlands that took place in 1170. Large parts of the Northern Netherlands, and Holland territories were overflowed.

The flooding North Sea created the islands of Wieringen and TexelLake Flevo was once a fresh water lake, but a sea channel opened a connection from the North Sea into the lake through Creil Woods. Lake Flevo began to turn into the salt-water sea known as the Zuiderzee. By around 1248, the transformation of the lake into the Zuiderzee was complete.[1] By around 1248, The Creiler Woods vanished under the waves. The sea area increased inside the Netherlands and large peat areas developed, which were easily washed away.

The flood rendered the settlement of Rotta (the predecessor of Rotterdam) uninhabitable,[2] and marked the beginning of Amsterdam, where the area gained an open connection to the sea, and where a dam was built in the Amstel to protect the land from future floods.[3]

DJ, the last thousend years NL did see several major floods killing thousends but also reshaping NL on the map....

One could see an interaction between hurricanes and earthquakes...large masses of water...weight in trillions of kilo's-on the move can cause quakes...but also worsen storms even further...

So a possible scenario-not that far away-may see a mix of earthquake-tsunami-hurricane/cyclone...

A very shallow quake...I do not know how deep the ocean is in that area-quake was at "0,0 km depth" ?????

A Magntiude 6.2 earthquake has taken place in the South Pacific Ocean, 468 miles from southern New Zealand, but the US Geological Survey says the depth of the wuake is ZERO point ZERO kilometers!   Right AT the surface????   That could trigger a tsunami, but the warning buoys are all OFFLINE (broken).

Worse, according to the National Data Buoy Center, the U.S. Tsunami Warning Buoys down there . . . . are OFFLINE and OUT OF SERVICE!   No one knows if a Tsunami is coming.

DJ https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/one-of-new-zealands-biggest-earthquakes-of-year-just-struck-in-puysegur-trench-but-no-one-felt-it/KFPNWH7AZ5DXZPIE3E574QQZA4/ or https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/one-of-new-zealands-biggest-earthquakes-of-year-just-struck-in-puysegur-trench-but-no-one-felt-it/KFPNWH7AZ5DXZPIE3E574QQZA4/

One of New Zealand’s biggest earthquakes of the year struck at 2.21pm this afternoon, in an area with proven potential to generate tsunamis.

But such was the shallow 5.9 quake’s long distance from the mainland – it hit 450km south of the South Island, and 285km southwest of the remote Snares Islands – that just one person reported feeling it on GeoNet.

It happened to strike near a little-understood seismic zone that’s produced some of the most powerful earthquakes in New Zealand’s recent history.

That was the Puysegur Trench: a plate boundary where the Australian plate dives below the Pacific plate - the opposite way to how the two plates subduct in the North Island, in the better-known Hikurangi Subduction Zone.

The boundary stretches for more than 800km south from the South Island, to a point in the wild and windy Southern Ocean, around 400km west of the Auckland Islands.

could it be related to less land-ice on Antarctica-so landmass being less pushed down by that ice-rising slowly ?

In 2009, the 7.8 Fiordland earthquake struck close to the northern end of the trench, releasing 25,000 times more energy than the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki in 1945 and twisted the South Island, moving Puysegur Pt on the southwestern tip of the island 30cm closer to Australia.

Its remote location, near Dusky Sound, meant there was relatively little damage.

A magnitude 7.2 quake hit the trench itself in November 2004 – a month before an 8.1 quake near the trench caused shaking felt as far as Tasmania.

GeoNet duty seismologist Dr Jonathan Hanson said we could be reasonably confident this afternoon’s quake was related to subduction zone processes in the area.

“The fact that we see quite a lot of events located in a really similar area reinforces that it’s likely to be related to some ongoing processes there.”

In the past 20 years, scientists have located about 100 events in the region.

what is the potential maximum magnitude of the combination of fault-lines south from New Zealand-to Samoa ? Recent history did see an M8.1 in 2004...

In strike-slip faulting, each side of the crustal block slides past the other without uplift and down-thrust, while in reverse faulting, the block above the fault moves up relative to the block below the fault.

“That’s quite an interesting phenomenon itself, that we can be seeing two distinct kinds of earthquake activity in this area,” he said.

“But the main thing to take away from this, is that it’s a reminder we have a subduction zone off the South Island that is productive and capable of generating large, tsunamigenic events.”

In this afternoon’s case, no tsunami threat to New Zealand had been identified.

Maybe satellites did take over the job (tsunami-watch) from buoys ? But it may be south of New Zealand-and some other areaś-may be hard to get a good view on...

MOSCOW, July 16. /TASS/. A magnitude 7.4 earthquake occurred on Sunday in the Alaska Peninsula region, the United States Geological Survey reports.

According to it, the epicenter was 106 kilometers south of Sand Point, a home to about 1,000 people. The quake was a depth of 9.3 kilometers.

DJ, It is evening/night -moving towards sunday-in the US...so "news updates" may be far from perfect...very likely only limited damage-south of Alaska-peninsula

DJ, very strong-very deep quake...strange...

There have been several quakes in "the Chile/Argentina region" M4.4 to M5.1...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1960_Valdivia_earthquake or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1960_Valdivia_earthquake ; The 1960 Chilean earthquakes were a sequence of strong earthquakes that affected Chile between 21 May and 6 June 1960, centered in the AraucaníaAysén, and Bío Bío regions of the country. The first three quakes, all registering in the planet's top 10 by magnitude for 1960, are grouped together as the 1960 Concepción earthquakes. The first of these was the 8.1 Mw Concepción earthquake at 06:02 UTC-4 on 21 May 1960. Its epicenter was near Curanilahue. Telecommunications to southern Chile were cut off and President Jorge Alessandri cancelled the traditional ceremony of the Battle of Iquique memorial holiday to oversee the emergency assistance efforts.[citation needed] The second and third Concepción earthquakes occurred the next day at 06:32 UTC-4 (7.1 Mw) and 14:55 UTC-4 (7.8 Mw) on 22 May. These earthquakes formed a southward migrating foreshock sequence to the main Valdivia shock, which occurred just 15 minutes after the third event.[13]

DJ So will this deep M6.2 quake result in more shallow M8+ quakes in Chile/Argentina ?

There have been several M6+ earthquakes last two days (see USGS)...could mean we are in an "active time"...with possible increase of risks for strong quakes-most likely around/in the Pacific Ocean.

With https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_ep4+shtml/024719.shtml?cone#contents or https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_ep4+shtml/024719.shtml?cone#contents hurricane "Hillary" on its way to (Baja) California -most risk in heavy rain- early next week/this weekend seismic risks also may increase for the west of the US and NW of Mexico (Pacific Canada, Alaska ?)

Lots of potentiol storms also over the Atlantic-record warm seawater...

DJ-One of my questions is how much extreme weather/disaster a country can deal with before it breaks up...

-Haïti always was close to "problems" -a severe earthquake-followed by cholera-killed hundreds of thousends..May have pushed a "weak state" further towards a "failed state"...

-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Katrina or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Katrina  (2005) became a major disaster because of mismanagement;

   -Not enough action before...It was clear New Orleans run a high risk

   -Not enough action afterwards...very likely hundreds of people died because they did not get enough help in time

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effects_of_Hurricane_Maria_in_Puerto_Rico or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effects_of_Hurricane_Maria_in_Puerto_Rico in 2017 showed US government again unable to act in time...See also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Hawaii_wildfires or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Hawaii_wildfires

DJ-Climate "change" means increase of risks...So governments have to use tax money to offer more protection to deal with more risks...If they do NOT compensate increase of risks with better measures (pushing billions into corrupt "private" party donors is NOT the answer-just another problem !) you simply will see more people get killed, more damage...

DJ, Hilary will bring extreme rain to the western part of North America...it may increase earthquake risks as well. The amount of rain by  both weight and liquidity could result in increase of seismic risks. No idea how that may work out...

In the Atlantic several storms on their way...

Another storm on the Mexico-Pacific coast looks to be a short event-may end within a day over Mexico.

https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ or https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ and https://www.tropicaltidbits.com/storminfo/ or https://www.tropicaltidbits.com/storminfo/ may be of use...

Hilary could be followed by another storm ?????

-------------

DJ, Ocean water record hot will result in record extreme weather...I do not know what could end up killing more people; dry 40-50c/100-120F temperatures or extreme storms...

They both will damage food production and logistics...so it will worsen even more the foodcrisis...(in part linked to H5N1 affecting poultry/eggs)..Also the duration matters..Will it start people to think about living in a more safe place ?

Even NL may face problems if water level rises, storms get stronger...European cities are not well prepared for high temperatures for weeks...

Also there will be an interaction between extreme weather and seismic (and volcanic) events...just not very clear how that will work out...https://forum.arctic-sea-ice.net/ or https://forum.arctic-sea-ice.net/ some indications for 20C+ in the Canadian Arctic...12C+ on Greenland shores...

Seismic activity always is complex. One could see it as lots of balances-lots of rain, seawater on the move, may affect those balances and increase seismic risks...

Of course I am NOT an expert...I would not be surprised to see an M6 "like" quake more north (Cascadia-Pacific to Yellowstone) a.o. also part of "Hilary"...

That storm brings crazy amounts of rain-flooding and may move towards Canada then east towards New England/New Netherlands region (OK...New York/New Jersey...).

https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ or https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ has THREE !!! named storms on the Atlantic -most of them will NOT be a danger to land...However close to Texas NE Mexico another storm may show up soon...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Atlantic_hurricane_season#Storm_names or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Atlantic_hurricane_season#Storm_names "Harold" may be the "other H-named storm" becoming a serious US problem soon...

A high pressure area over the central US will result in a "heat-dome" -extreme heat...with storms circling around it...

West of Mexico https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Pacific_hurricane_season#Storm_names or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Pacific_hurricane_season#Storm_names "Irwin" could form and may follow "Hilary" route (if it would become a storm fast)...

Wildfires -a.o. in Canada- may get extra wind and heat because of the central US heat-dome...

Flooding may result in more mesquito-born diseases like malaria...

But, also, a strong pressure gradient is developing between the large low pressure system affecting western Europe and the strong high pressure centred over northern Norway. This gradient or tight isobars is generating strong easterly winds from NE Scotland and the Northern Isles across the North Sea to Denmark and beyond to the Baltic Sea. A wind gust of 77mph this afternoon at Inverbervie between Aberdeen and Dundee.

To the south of the UK over France and Spain, a deep area of low pressure moving east over the Bay of Biscay this evening will also bring severe weather impacts across parts of these two nations tonight and through Friday. The storm here has been named Aline.

A level 2 was issued across parts of N Italy mainly for heavy rainfall, tornadoes and damaging wind gusts.

A level 1 was issued across central to S Italy and the E Adriatic coastline mainly for heavy rainfall, tornadoes and large hail.

A level 1 was issued across SE France mainly for heavy rainfall.

A level 1 was issued across SW France mainly for severe wind gusts and tornadoes and to the lesser degree for heavy rainfall.

DJ, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Atlantic_hurricane_season# or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Atlantic_hurricane_season# "Tammy" is expected to become a hurricane...may do some island damage...European storms may still have energy from Atlantic hurricane/tropical storms...

The weather should calm down across western Europe over the weekend as the troublesome lows weaken – with winds easing and just sunny spells and showers around rather then the deluges and strong winds today and tomorrow. But more trouble looks like it’s brewing early next week, as another powerful jet streak arrives from the west over the North Atlantic and takes aim at western Europe, bringing in more low pressure systems from the west with more wind and rain.

DJ, weather prediction is getting harder...small differences now may mean major differences in a few days...

A state of emergency has been declared in Grindavík and the town was evacuated after midnight last night.

Víðir Reynisson, the chief of the Civil Protection Department, says that there is no way to exclude the possibility of a dike reaching Grindavík.

Magma intrusion might be beneath Grindavík

According to data from the Icelandic Met Office, significant changes in the seismic activity was measured near Sundhnjúkar crater row north of Grindavík and deformation observed in the Reykjanes Peninsula yesterday afternoon. The seismic activity has moved south towards Grindavík. Based on how the seismic activity has evolved since 6 pm yesterday, along with results from GPS measurements, there is a likelihood that a magma intrusion has extended beneath Grindavík.

DJ, A major volcanic eruption SW of Iceland will not only disrupt trans-atlantic flights...it may also bring water vapor/green house gasses into the atmosphere...

https://en.vedur.is/#tab=quakes or https://en.vedur.is/#tab=quakes ;

Around 1000 earthquakes have occurred around the dike since midnight, all below a magnitude 3.0.

Models show a 15-km long magma intrusion, located just northwest of Grindavík. From geophysical models of the dike intrusion, it is estimated that the intrusion is propagating upwards slowly, with magma thought to be 800 m, or higher, beneath the surface. The overall assessment from the status meeting yesterday was that the likelihood of a volcanic eruption is high, and that an eruption could be possible on a timescale of just days

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d96ASZAhymk or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d96ASZAhymk ;

Welcome everyone! Today’s forecast will revolve around a possible storm later this month in Europe, as well as an update on a rather strong East Coast storm in the U.S.

DJ https://www.ventusky.com/ or https://www.ventusky.com/ has extreme pressure differences in the coming weeks...1050+ HPa over the Atlantic with sometimes 950- hPA depression lows both on the American and European side of the Ocean...VERY EXTREME-will bring extreme weather in some area's !

Since it is a "larger model" translating it to where you live is up to local weather office...But even they may be in for a surprise...

DJ-We may have had almost 43C north of where I live in 2019...It did not fit into the models used by the weather office so it was "ignored" as to extreme...

https://www.gld.nl/nieuws/2431626/het-was-echt-42-9-graden-in-deelen-maar-het-is-te-bizar-voor-woorden or https://www.gld.nl/nieuws/2431626/het-was-echt-42-9-graden-in-deelen-maar-het-is-te-bizar-voor-woorden ; (translation function not working)

DJ, basic message "to bizarre so not included in statistics"...

For the extreme difference in hPa; It could translate to extreme strong wind; 100 miles/160 kmh+ Since the Atlantic also is "hot" we may also see extreme rain/snow. Cold air may be pushed from Greenland into NW Europe...(it could even bring a drop in temperature of 20C+ within 24 hrs...also extreme...)

DJ, Storm "Pia" on its way to (NW) Europe...

Northern Group (Denmark, Norway and Sweden)/Central & Southern Group (FUB) (Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Austria)[edit]

This naming group, like the naming from the Free University of Berlin, does not use a naming list but names storms when it has not received a name by any other meteorological service in Europe and is projected to affect Denmark, Norway or Sweden.

DJ, "Pia" is not in one of the four lists in the wiki-link but did get a name from "Berlin"...while it also is affecting a wider area than "just" Scandinavia....

DJ Very deep/strong quake not far from the border with Peru...In theory it will be followed by a more shallow quake-magnitude 1 to 2 stronger within 48 hours....It could activate seismic activity in the Americas/Pacific region...

A look at https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/?extent=-67.47492,-289.33594&extent=84.67351,99.14063&range=month&magnitude=4.5&sort=largest&settings=true or https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/?extent=-67.47492,-289.33594&extent=84.67351,99.14063&range=month&magnitude=4.5&sort=largest&settings=true

has a M7.0 in China 22 january...

Two major quakes in Brazil;

6.6 on january 20, depth 607 km

6.5 on january 28, depth 619,6 km

both near the Peru border...not a lot of people live there...

However...is there a build-up to a much stonger quake in Chile ???

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1960_Valdivia_earthquake or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1960_Valdivia_earthquake ;

The 1960 Valdivia earthquake and tsunami (Spanish: Terremoto de Valdivia) or the Great Chilean earthquake (Gran terremoto de Chile) on 22 May 1960 was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded. Various studies have placed it at 9.4–9.6 on the moment magnitude scale.[1] It occurred in the afternoon (19:11 GMT, 15:11 local time), and lasted for approximately 10 minutes. The resulting tsunamis affected southern ChileHawaiiJapan, the Philippines, eastern New Zealand, southeast Australia, and the Aleutian Islands.

-see also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1960_Valdivia_earthquake#Previous_and_subsequent_earthquakes or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1960_Valdivia_earthquake#Previous_and_subsequent_earthquakes 1800 B.C. , 1575 and 2010 (a.o.) did see also strong quakes in Chile...

DJ-The 1960 quake had lighter ones in the same area before the "big one"....So the two M6+ quakes in Brazil may not result in ANY further quakes ????
