Two new cases of bird flu in France

Fri Apr 21, 8:29 AM ET

PARIS (AFP) - Two new cases of the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu have been detected in two wild swans found dead this week in the centre-east of France, the agriculture ministry revealed.

The dead birds were discovered in marshland in the Ain region where all but one of the bird flu cases recorded in the country have come from.

Since the beginning of the year, and including the latest cases, 64 wild birds have been found with H5N1 in France. Sixty-three were in the Ain region and one was foun in the southeastern Bouches-du-Rhone region, according to a ministry statement. A total of 14,000 birds have been tested.

A poultry farm in the Ain is the only commercial bird property in the European Union to have been infected.

No cases of humans contracting the deadly disease have been recorded in France.
