Today is the 352nd day of the war in Ukraine (February 10, 2023). Over 200,000 soldiers and 50,000 civilians have been killed so far. Women were raped, children frightened, an entire people traumatized. If the fighting continues like this, Ukraine will soon be a depopulated, devastated country. And many people across Europe are also afraid of an escalation of the war. They fear for their and their children's future.

The Ukrainian population brutally attacked by Russia needs our solidarity. But what would be solidarity now? How much longer will there be fighting and dying on the battlefield of Ukraine? And now, a year later, what is actually the goal of this war? The German Foreign Minister recently said that "we" are waging a "war against Russia". In earnest?

President Zelenskyj makes no secret of his goal. After the promised tanks, he is now also demanding fighter jets, long-range missiles and warships – to defeat Russia across the board? The German chancellor still assures that he does not want to send fighter jets or "ground troops". But how many "red lines" have already been crossed in recent months?

It is to be feared that Putin will launch a maximum counter-attack if Crimea is attacked at the latest. Will we then inexorably slide towards world war and nuclear war? It wouldn't be the first major war that started like this. But it might be the last.

Supported by the West, Ukraine can win individual battles. But it cannot win a war against the world's largest nuclear power. That's what the highest military in the United States, General Milley, says. He speaks of a stalemate in which neither side can win militarily and the war can only be ended at the negotiating table. Then why not now? Immediately!

Negotiating does not mean surrendering. Negotiating means making compromises on both sides. With the aim of preventing hundreds of thousands more deaths and worse. That's what we think too, and that's what half of the German population thinks. It's time to listen to us!

We citizens of Germany cannot directly influence America and Russia or our European neighbors. But we can and must hold our government and the chancellor to account and remind him of his oath: "Revert damage to the German people".

We call on the Chancellor to stop the escalation in arms deliveries. Now! He should lead a strong alliance for a ceasefire and peace negotiations at both German and European level. Now! Because every lost day costs up to 1,000 more human lives - and brings us closer to a 3rd World War.

Organizers of the Rebellion for Peace protest have been criticized for playing into Russian President Vladimir Putin's hands. Far-right groups have told their supporters to show up, prompting a strong police presence.

Police in Berlin have stepped up their presence over fears that a "peace" protest in the German capital later Saturday could turn violent, local media reported.

Organizers of the Rebellion for Peace rally have received fierce criticism from many politicians, including Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who say the demonstration could weaken public support for Ukraine's fightback against Russia.

Police are also concerned that the event, at the Brandenburg Gate, could be buttressed by far-right groups for their own ends.

One of the organizers, renegade former socialist Left Party leader Sahra Wagenknecht told public broadcaster ZDF that, "We have made clear that rightwing extremist symbols have no place at this rally," but added, "But of course, everyone is welcome who wants to demonstrate for peace with an open heart."

The so-called peace rally follows a protest in solidarity with Ukraine, attended by some 10,000 people in Berlin on Friday night — the one-year anniversary of Russia's invasion.

What is the Rebellion for Peace rally?

Saturday's protest has been organized by Wagenknecht and publicist Alice Schwarzer.

The pair have applied for permission for 10,000 people to attend.

Two weeks ago, the organizers published a "Manifesto for Peace," which has been backed by the signatures of more than 620,000 people, according to the change.org website.

The pair say they want to see "negotiations and compromises" on both sides of the yearlong Ukraine conflict to prevent it from escalating into possible nuclear war.

In an interview with Germany's DPA news agency, Schwarzer said in view of the number of people who have signed the manifesto, she said it is "well on the way to becoming a real citizens' movement."

She also accused Scholz of not taking the concerns of so many people seriously, adding: "This is about the survival of mankind."

Schwarzer added that arms sales to Ukraine should be accompanied by diplomatic efforts.

"After a year of death and destruction, I ask: What is stopping us from starting negotiations now instead of waiting three years?"
