Military lays out plans should avian flu
break out in Europe Goal is to protect troops, dependents while continuing mission Stars and Stripes European edition, Tuesday, January 31, 2006 STUTTGART, Germany — "The U.S. military in Europe would consider restricting the movement of troops, families and civilians as a way to combat the outbreak of the avian influenza, in the event the virus mutates and starts spreading from human to human. The military’s plan, as discussed at a conference earlier this month in Stuttgart, would be orchestrated with host nations and U.S. embassies. It strives to shield troops and families from the disease while also allowing U.S. military missions to continue unfettered." http://www.estripes.com/article.asp?section=104&article=3468 4 -------- US troops taking no extra precautions in light of bird flu case in Iraq PENTAGON The Pentagon says U-S troops in Iraq won't be taking additional health precautions in light of that country's first case of bird flu. But officials say they will be on the lookout for flu-like symptoms. Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman says "It's a situation that is being monitored closely." He says no symptoms of bird flu have been detected among the approximately 138-thousand U-S troops in Iraq. http:// www.wpri.com/Global/story.asp?S=4435722 Edited by Rick |

The following also caught my attention. When
half the planet is sick and the other half is taking care of them, who is going to be healthy enough for the U.S. to continue "unfettered missions against"? Nuke the virus? "It strives to shield troops and families from the disease while also allowing U.S. military missions to continue unfettered." Could they also be implying that they want to make sure that U.S. citizens in Europe who might contract the Avian Flu virus before folks at home, don't go anywhere until they are checked out? Think they are going to let any sick citizens back home? We protect the troops in Europe and not in Iraq? Or does does this mean more extended duty in Iraq? Hmmm. Edited by Rick |

As far as restricting civilian movement, they are more than likely talking about family members and contractors there on the governments dime. As far as restricting civilians there on vacation, highly doubtful we cant do that, but we could close our border.
There is a very common practice in the military called "Medical Hold" where milt members are forced to stay on active duty or at a duty station until they medically check out, aka govt hospitals can fix whatever is ailing you. I think this is so you cant come back later for VA benefits saying you got permanently messed up due to some milt injury that would have otherwise healed normally. The is also something VERY common where the milt freezes ALL transfers to/from duty stations for alot of reasons.
very common stuff, no illuminati here.

Memoradum/Directive - Sept 21, 2004 - Regarding Avian Flu Assistant Secretary of Defense Washington D.C. “The DoD’s top priority for use of vaccine or antiviral medications is in forward deployed operational forces.” This runs counter to what they recently said, "The Pentagon says U-S troops in Iraq won't be taking additional health precautions in light of that country's first case of bird flu. " . Hmmm. http://www.geis.fhp.osd.mil/GEIS/SurveillanceActivities/Infl uenza/ DoD_Flu_Plan_040921.pdf Edited by Rick |

Oct. 7, 2005 WASHINGTON - "President Bush, increasingly concerned about a possible avian flu pandemic, revealed Tuesday that any part of the country where the virus breaks out could likely be quarantined and that he is considering using the military to enforce it." “The best way to deal with a pandemic is to isolate it and keep it isolated in the region in which it begins,” he said during a wide-ranging Rose Garden news conference. Is this what President Bush might define as a "Medical Hold"? Edited by Rick |

Someone was smoking crack at the pentagon. Every unit, as part of deployment preparations and while deployed, gets NUMEROUS vaccinations and meds to take while in country. Our Corpsmen were MORE THAN HAPPY to hunt you down if you didnt go get your shot. |

Assistant Secretary of Defense (I don't think he smokes Crack) Washington D.C. “The DoD’s top priority for use of vaccine or antiviral medications is in forward deployed operational forces.” This runs counter to what they recently said, "The Pentagon says U-S troops in Iraq won't be taking additional health precautions in light of that country's first case of bird flu. " ------------------------------------------------------------ Someone was smoking crack at the pentagon. Every unit, as part of deployment preparations and while deployed, gets NUMEROUS vaccinations and meds to take while in country. Our Corpsmen were MORE THAN HAPPY to hunt you down if you didnt go get your shot My question is, if U.S. troops stationed in Northern Iraq come down with Avian Flu, would they recieve Tamiflu (orally) in the 24-48 hr. time frame it has to be given ? Do they have any avialable for their troops currently? If not, why not, considering the close confines they live in? Is FEMA taking care of this :-( ? God knows its bad enough out there as it is! Hmm. I posted a reply and it didnt seem to make it. Let me paraphrase what I wrote. My best guess is yes, soldiers would receive the tamiflu. Given the President's plan of stockpiling Tamiflu for dealing with a pandemic, I would bet the govt already controls enough Tamiflu to dose the entire milt. Given the cases of bf now appearing in Iraq, I would bet the DoD has already begun shipping the meds there and is disbursing it all the way down to regimental aid stations. I was never a witness to anyone being deprived of medical attention or drugs while I was in. I doubt FEMA would have anything to do with the milt's needs. arent they DHS? I dont think DHS is a sub agency of the DoD and Vice Versa.
