Instant whole or instant low fat skim or powdered milk substitute---which tastes the most like whole milk? What can be added, vanilla, sugar, canned milk to improve the taste? Powdered low fat milk has the best shelf life?
What's the best way to store it? Where have you found the best price? I want to get as close as I can to the taste of whole milk. So many questions, sorry!

I got my low heat dried mils from honeyville. I add a pinch of sugar and a drop of vanilla. It is very much like skim milk at that point. If you want it to taste like whole milk, add 1 can evaporated milk to a gallon of dried, and it's just like buying it from the store. Jo

You can buy whole milk, Parmalot brand, off the shelf in the baking aisle, at Walmart, it is $1.48 a qt at my Walmart. It doesn't need refrigeration until you open it, the milk I bought about a month ago has an exp. date of December. I have been buying it and using it before it expires instead of using gas and running to the store when we are out of milk (10 miles round trip). They also make this milk in small individual boxes (like juice boxes) and it comes in white and chocolate milk, I used to buy it when we lived in Atlanta, but I haven't found the individual boxes here. We also have powdered milk which I have in the freezer and canned milk.

We normally use 2% milk, and I have been buying the Parmalot 2%, but the more I think about it, I should buy the whole and mix it with my powdered milk (which DH & DD hate) to make it more tolerable, as long as we have electricity or it's cold outside, it wouldn't hurt to have a gallon of milk at a time.
