We would see an h5n1 pandemic coming from a mile away.   You would see rapid deaths.

Almost like "don't shoot til you see the whites of their eyes". That dose of reality was just what I needed Albert, thanks, and it is so true. We will know.

A bigger problem I believe we as a country will have as opposed to Indonesia is we are a nation of hypochondriacs who at the fisrt sign of a sniffle will zip off to the doctor demanding Tamilflu.  I already feel sorry for our medical staffers, it will not be fun.

The U.S. could overt any sort of a panic over h5n1 bird outbreaks and slow down any decline of the future poultry market by making a couple of relatively simple adjustments.  They could do this by educating the public on how to handle future bird deaths (h5 outbreaks).  Possibly set up an information website. This would prepare the public without them even knowing.  It would take away the shock factor.

The overall best idea is to stick with the original plan and to keep prepping.

My biggest hopes and greater fears for the handeling of this pandemic lies in the hands of the media.  My hope is that they continue in the fashion in the way they presented the big story the other day of the infected birds in Michigan.  That was honest transparent reporting with a calm temperment.  I even heard a brief but good CBS report on the story on the radio on my way home from work.  I sense we will see more and more coverage and information via all mass media outlets which I hope will gradually condition the public to the realities we are facing while reducing the panic potential.   My biggest fear would be to see around the clock coverage with Geraldo Rivera wearing a full moon suit holding up dead chickens.

As the normal flu has become resistant to some meds as well as emergency management saying viruse will be here in washington state will be hard. High level of alert is hard to maintane and is stressfull, stress skills will have to be ontop of this one. Good reading. thanks.

Joseph, have you seen the regional pandemic planning programs done by Harborview Medical Center?   You can get them by going to www.uwtv.org and putting pandemic into the search function.   The programs are all about an hour long and cover various topics.   I thought it was worthwhile.
