Ok, First off, I'm not sure i'm posting this in the right section, so if it's wrong, Admins, feel free to move it.

As we've made our preps over the past several months, we thought we taken pretty much every thing possible into consideration, from food prep to lighting, to heat to medical, to reading materials. But what wh hadn't considered was an invasion of pests.

We have a dog and two cats. Somewhere in the past few weeks, the dog was exposed to ticks, and now we have to get the house fumigated and the dog & cats dipped and treated.

We didn't realize just how much stuff we have that isn't in cans or sealed containers. So we went out to the local hardwar super store and bought three 32-gallon trash cans, and bags to serve as liners. We have two storage areas. We figured we wouldn't need more than 3 cans. Well, we were definitely wrong on that aspect.

We've just finished sorting through one storage area, putting only boxes/bags into the lined trash cans. We've filled two of them and are about a third of the way through the last one.

It may not be a perfect solution, and at this point in time, it's the only solution I have available to me. So, in a bit of hindsight, what have I learned here?

There won't be any sort of commercial pest control available if TSHTF. I'm adding some of those room foggers for later use. Along with fly paper, roach traps, etc.

Any suggestions as to how I could have safeguarded my preps better/easier?

FictionWriter as far as pests go mice and rats can and will chew holes in plastic to get at food thats why I use an old freezer to store grain for my horses so be careful of using plastic.Meal worms can be a problem with boxed or bagged dry goods so I packed my dry goods In mason jars with tight lids.As far as fleas and ticks on pets are concerned get some 5% seven dust you can put it out in your yard and if the worst hits and you have nothing else to treat your dogs with you can take 7 dust and brush it in to your dogs coat and let it sit for maybe 15 min and then give your dog a bath be really careful and dont breath this stuff in and keep your dog from smelling and or licking while they are being treated rinse them really well(remember to use gloves).I have heard that you can put borax out on carpet ect and let it sit for 24hrs then vacuum it up to help remove fleas.Put aluminum foil in all holes you even think a mouse could get through next to water pipes ect.I hope this helps.

Information on storage containers here:  http://www.providentliving.org/content/list/0,11664,2250-1,00.html
You may want to be careful using garbage cans or liners for food as they can be treated with chemicals. I don't know how this would effect food that is boxed or bagged, but not sealed.   I believe there is more info on the dangers of using garbage cans as storage devices elsewhere on this site.

I hadn't thought about bugs, although we have sticky traps for mice as part of our preps.

I'm not too worried about the garbage bags i used as liners. Reason is it's a very temporary solution. Pest control dude just left after spending about an hour spraying yard (back and front) and house thoroughly. We put the food into the storage bins to prevent them from being sprayed with the chemicals, particularly the cardboard boxes. Tomorrow our housekeeper will be here and she'll give the house a decent cleaning...then the food will come out of the storage bins and back into storage

But thanks for the suggestions. Seven dust. I remember my dad swore by it. We'll have to go and get some. Thanks!
