Compressed air  . . .  this is the great, invisible utility of our modern culture.  Few people seem to notice it, but if the electricity is off for any extended period of time,  THEN we'll  notice it for sure.    How are you making sure you can still air up tires, clear water lines,  and use pneumatic machinery?

We had an accidental discovery.  We owned a 1.5 horsepower Craftsman air compressor which we at one point mistakenly thought was no longer working.  After we bought a 5 hp 115 volt one, we found out the first one still worked. That was good because we also found out that our 4200 watt, 5000 watt max Craftsman generator would not start the bigger compressor.  We have both, but as things now are, we would not be able to get compressed air from the 5 hp one unless the main electric power was on.  Lessons learned!

What are you doing for backups on compressed air?

LOLExcuse me for replying to my own post, but here are several ideas.

1.  We try to keep the tires etc. aired up full but not over so we don't start off already behind on air when  an outage begins.  It helps out sense of vigiliance that we have frequent if brief outages in our area.  We have to re-set our clocks on the average of once about every ten days.

2.  We have a nine-gallon air tank which we keep around 100-110 psi.

3.  If it looks like we may have brown-outs/black-outs in the near future, we start up our air compressors to fill up but turn the delivery petcocks off so the air doesn't leak out through the lines.
