I'll start:   Fist I strat with is a  first aid kit....Second will be supplies to help with someone that is bed ridden and ill.
 
I have been on the ambulance corp and have a very clumsy 13 year old boy and a tom boy of a daughter...Lots of medical supplies in my house.
 
I also care for someone dieing so perhaps I can help a little.
 
I have a first aid kit.   I suggest (for saving money)  you make your own..
I bought a plano fishing box.  It has two section with lots of compartments you can divide.
 
Latex Gloves....Put them on...The last thing you want is to infect your patient.
 
Purell Wipes
 
Band aids This would include all sizes
 
Band aid for finger tips and knucles...Very important.
 
Band aid for knees.
 
I also have the water proof band aid from Nexcare...Works great.
 
Gauze pads 4 by 4's  and larger I buy alot of these.  There to dress a wound and clean a wound. 
 
Eye patch
 
butterfly closures  ...waterproof
 
Clear tape 3/4 inch.    Nexcare flexible
 
Surgical mask... I Never use them for family but if I stop at accident I put one on.
 
Glass Thermometer
 
CPR Microshield clear mouth barrier  If they have BF you'll need to protect yourself. 
 
Jewelers loop   for splitters...particles in the eye etc.
 
Cleaning wipes...I use this for clean wounds.  It's almost like the wipes you get after eating ribs or lobster.  But sterile.
 
Liquid Band aid   I use this for palm, in between fingers and toes and scalp wounds.   Works great.   It stings a little
 
Eye cup  ....Is use to fill with eye wash and you put the cup over eye to get any particles out.
 
Neosporin   First aid anti biotic ointment
 
Sling   To keep arm in a 90 degree angle and help keep the arm still while healing.
 
Ace bandage...If someone had pop a knee, sprained a wrist or ankle.
 
3 inch Gauze wrap (sometimes called kling.)..Lots of these...There use of cover a wound and I use a lot. 
 
Silver Sulfadiazine....1% cream....burn cream and it work great ...You have to have a prescription.  My doctor gives me a prescription ....For 1st and 2nd degree burns.  Works in 5 Min's.   This is a must have.....burns are very painful...
 
Benadryl....For allergies.  I keep this for food allergies (only for hives)..
Not for swelling of the tongue.  If swelling of tongue seek help fast.
 
 
I also keep alka seltzer, Excedrin quick tabs, Imodium AD tabs, Orajel, Extra strength Tylenol caplets, Cough drops (Halls)

Tweezers
 
Surgical knife. 
 
 
Now for caring for someone ill.
 
Clean room very important.
 
In room potty if they can get up.  These potties should have rails to help them get up..
 
Bed rail.  Move the bed next to a wall so they don't fall out.  Then you use 1 bed rail.
 
Depends diapers.   When the cant get out of bed. 
 
Baby wipes.  Lots and Lots
 
Straws...To help them drink...
 
Pads to go under thier bottoms.  These are disposable.  Accidents happen a lot when some is ill.   This will help keep the laundry down.
 
Crutches.
 
Anti bacteria soap....
 
Side tray.  To put a drink that they can reach...If they can reach for a drink.

  Hi HappyCamper, these are great ideas.  Do you have any idea where I would find bed rails?  Do they have adjustable rails to fit any size bed?  Thanks a lot for any information on this.

Bed rails go under the matress and the box spring...It a 90 degree bar the long part goes under the bed.
 
 
 This is just one place...The bed rail we have was 75.00 but I would go to thrift shops.

Check out Colemans dot com. Not to be confused with the camping gear company (coleman's), Colemans is a military surplus vendor and they've had military hospital type beds of late, complete with rails...and rails available as separate purchases. I've used them in the past, and they are very reliable.

Great ideas Happy!

As I am a worrier, so I also have syrup of Ipecac, a kit for poisonous serpents and spiders (my grown sons tell me that is extreme).
 
I bought plastic cups in different colors at the dollar store.  These cups are made for children and  have the shape of an elephant and the trunk or the tail (I put them up and I forgot which is which) form the built-in straw.  That way if, God forbid, there is more than one ill person, each has his/her own cup and also the well persons can keep away from using them.
 
Also, I would like to offer one idea.  Sometimes a sick person is too weak to call or have such a sore throat that they cannot actually use their voice.  When my children were young and had colds and sore throats, I made their rooms very comfortable and well ventilated and in addition to a beverage, I placed, on their side table, a bell that they could ring if they needed me when I was out of their room.  This worked very well.  I still have the bell.

You know I forgot about the bell.  I have a brass bell thats light but what a noise it makes. 

For anyone with food allergies please I beg you.  Get an épée pen...

May I suggest that yall pick up some Mucinex. The DR put my daughter on it when she had pneumonia its the same meds as the prescription except its over the counter. He put her on it again for bronchitis.

I had bought Mucinex as a prep item...My husband used it for terrible chest congestion and it worked.  That stuff is amazing and I'm going to get two more bottles of it.

He really should have gone to the Doctors but he just hates going to them so he started to take the mucinex.
 
Chinese tea helped him feel better as well.  I got some from the Chinese take out.

I have had my bell since I can remember.  Maybe 35 to 40 years.  Way before my children were born.  I do not remember where I got it, but it is a plain brass bell.   The bell and handle are about 4 1/2" in height.   I used to hide it when my children were well because they loved to ring it and it was so noisy!  I believe you can find one almost anywhere, but I know Amazon has one with a wooden handle for about $4 or $5 + shipping.  Maybe even eBay would have one too.  I just found this site for you.  They call it Santa hand bell. http://www.nextag.com/Santa-Hand-Bells-505839731/prices-html

A bit of a yuck topic , but if you have somebody seriously ill in your house
have you considered
- a bed pan
- what you will do if they are unable to maintain  control of their bowels in the bed.

Then if they survive they are still at risk from secondary infection because
they are so weak .
Have a nemoccal ( spelling ? )   vaccine shot now , because there is strong
evidence that it enhances chances of survival is such situations.

A bed pan is a good idea...but I find if there to weak to get up there just to weak to hold it...Get some depends adult diapers...
 
I know my husband crawled to the bathroom and had me help him up...He would not use the bed pan.  He had the flu at the time...106 fever it was bad.  My step father was the same way....

I would like to suggest getting some saline solution for cleaning wounds. My daughter recently had to have home health care for surgical wounds that were not stitched but were cleansed and bandaged daily and this is what the visiting nurse brought with her, and it works really well. You can get it from Walgreen's and probably from any pharmacy next to the gauze pads and bandaids.

    Hi Grandma3 - Ammonia inhalers are respiratory stimulants used to prevent and treat people who are or have fainted. I believe they're available at most drugstores. Also thanks Judy...I'll pick up saline as well and I need some eye wash solution.
 
Both are very cheap...Don't forget the Peroxide which, is a excellent cleaning solution.  It bubbles when dirt or bacteria is present.  If a wound is really dirty you can see the dirt in the bubbles. 
 
You can gargle with peroxide in case of strep or mouth sores.  Use as a rinse.
 
Peroxide can also be use for dogs.  If they have swallow chocolate or something else they shouldn't, 1 shot glass of peroxide is a safe and effective way to make them throw up...This is straight from the mouth of my  vet.   My dog ate a whole box of chocolate...My car battery was dead  I had no way to get to him..
He said ...Give the dog 1 shot glass of peroxide and wait 15 minute...Then if she doesn't throw up repeat.   Well in 11 minutes she was throwing up all over the yard...It saved her life.

Stock up on asthma inhalers if you have someone in the house that needs them. They can be used to help clear congestion too - I've been prescribed ventolin before when I've had bronchitis. The OTC ones - Primatene and the generic versions you find at Walmart, etc - are getting harder to find as the propellant used is CFC and the EPA are clamping down. I have a number of prescription and OTC ones in my preps as my wife has pretty bad asthma. I'm going to see if I can get her a stock of inhaled steroid medication too as she takes them to maintain her asthma. I figure if I go in when I'm a bit wheezy I should be able to get a prescription with refills.
