I'm going to go off on a rant here...I am a busy guy...so when I check the latest news and find 4 of the same posts on the same news story I have to wonder, are you bothering to read the articles posted or are you just posting to see your name in print? We aren't running a contest here, its an information board. So before you post the "latest" news, take a moment to at least glance down the list of new topics and if you see "Grocery stores need to prepare for bird flu" don't cut and paste the same AP story for the fifth time on the same day. Obviously someone has already beat you to the punch and your news is old news. I don't want to see old news because then I'm not getting the new news. And I never understand why someone would cut and paste the exact same AP story and post it in the same thread--that is just plain retarded. Now I suppose there might be some "timing" issues with when stuff goes on line or some thing but I don't think that's the problem..I think people aren't bothering to read what's being posted. Stop it. Thanks.

I have to agree with your post. Many times I check in to see what is
going on and I cannot figure out if the 'latest headline' is just a rehash of two day old stuff or new stuff. So I have to go through a whole routine of checking it all out again and again. If it is new then say so, but if it is a repeat of what has already been posted three times then stop reporting it as new. Well said. |

It always makes me wonder when I see someone post something that has been posted many times before if they are just a sensation seeker.

Hi this post came from over in discussion from Albert re posts . It may clear the way a little here ............ I most days go on line late afternoon and remain on line until maybe 1 am EST , I post during this time . I try very hard not to double post and welcome a pull up if I have not seen my error , I can't cancel post or thread if someone replys , not sure if I can now with upgrades... Yesterday is the time of threads I read , before I post . I enjoy the country threads , the info that describes all that encompasses that country is priceless . You know what to expect from the writers of the news articles and you know the countries news systems of what they allow to be said . Try to read every post re every country each reported news says a little to make a full picture of events unfolding . The forum is set up to have several threads of same subject going .... please read Albert here ....
Hi LC. Very good suggestion... We actually tried something similar to that in the past. The only problem with having dedicated news threads for each country is that the headlines and subject would frequently change and it's difficult to keep a "fresh view" of some of the changing events. The different "headlines" gives people choices of content to choose from. With the dedicated news/country thread, people would also tend to throw in inaccurate foreign translations and commentaries, which have a tendency to spin a thread in the wrong direction.... Once a dedicated thread is moving down the wrong road of inaccuracy, they're difficult to fix. Many dedicated threads would have discussions about clusters that had tested negative, which would then turn the topic more in the direction of speculation...
We went with the fast moving fresh headlines so people can pick the exact news content that they're looking for. One thing that we've learned is that forums can be very easy to complicate at times, which is why we usually don't like to use sticky topics, announcements and sub-forums ... Our idea is to keep things as simple and as possible.
Having said all of that, we can do it both ways. In some cases, it would in fact be a good idea to have a dedicated thread for quickly unfolding (isolated) events, such as with he UK. We will have to give it some more thought on how to structure it..
We usually place new confirmed human cases on temporary sticky topics in the News section for the first few hours that they're released. We also thought about creating a separate "Hot Topics" section for the top news stories, which would also help separate the larger events.
Thanks LC for the input. We always like to hear about new suggestions and ideas |

Everyone is trying to do the best that they can. We are dealing with people from all over the world. With that being said, just look at the chances that it will happen. Maybe ALBERT can help with this as if he doesn't have enough have enough to do. I for one like that everyone is hunting for info. AND SO WHAT! You read it twice is it really going to kill you? I am not trying to hurt anyone feelings... unless Albert can pay someone to set down and go over a little thing that is posted, it will stay this way. Gee how would you like it if you could not find Avian Flu TALK? Just look at all the information you have learned. Life is never going to be easy and all we can do is try our best.

I think this is a simple enough point and worth stating here, that some people do seem to just put article after article out there without even looking, so this is someone asking politely enough to others to please check before posting. I don't think he is addressing anyone that does it by accident, the ones doing it over and over again are the ones that need to pay more attention. Never2Late, you only wrote what a lot of us think everyday! haha.

I have a pretty simple method for checking if an article has been posted before. I pick a word or two that is unique in my article and quickly do a search using those words. That will tell you right away if that article has already been posted. Beats searching through a bunch of threads. This is really sort of accepted procedure in most forums, (not to double post that is).

Never2late: I agree with you totally and have thought this many times. Why can't they be prehaps a little more careful not to post the same topic twice. I didn't say anything because I didnt want to hurt people's feelings.
I think they are doing a great thing by keeping us all advised. The duplicates can be avoided, or minimized I think this is how.
1. Don't post your topic as your opinion. Use the topic given by the reporter (Author).
Trying to grab everyones attention to see how many hits you get is not the way to post the news. So please stick with the news topic.
2. Posting the same Article five times under the same topic is draining on thoses trying to get all the news
Five stories given by five different reporters is just to hard to keep track of.
Perhaps cutting and pasting just the paragraphs that can add more inforamation would help and of course the link. It could read like this:
In addition to the topic above. Blah blah blah. and the link.
This would help out soooo much.
3. Indonesia topic is five pages long and I know your trying to keep it all together. I really do appreciate but,
Perhaps sticking to one story per topic would help readers.
Ex: If a girl got sick in Jakara and is in the hospital. Use that topic for just that girl and whom she infected or her updated information. Not another story in another part of that country. It's to hard to keep track of.
Please with all I've said I mean not to offend anyone. You all work so hard to keep us all posted and I for one am very grateful.
This is just MY opinion.

I have sometimes deliberately double posted because it seems to be that
it makes sense to break the reports up in to categories like - Indonesia , Egypt , Russia etc . If its all over the place then it is hard to read everything keep track of what is going on and what news has been posted on a particular area . Which in turn leads to double posting , because people do not want to work back thru miles of posts . |

If I'm up at 3am posting... all the normal awake people are posting all day and then I go on at 9pm and my posts are left behind... inless it's something people continue to answer... like the something fun for a change on General. If I post at dinnertime it's more in the mainstream. So you are correct
Candles...if you notice a difference.
Post any way you like...

Thank you, AnnHarra, for the links. Those sites were new to me. I confess a little reluctance to post from sites where certain others regularly post from-I don't want to seem to be trying to upstage them. However, I do want to be helpful.

I agree with Ross. We just want to get the news as quick as possible cap1. Don't worry about damaging egos. I come here first to see what the latest news is and then I search for what has not been posted.
