I've been checking on line about  the safety of  the containers I use for storage....was very surprised at what was safe and what wasn't.....vittles vaults are in the safe zone...you could even use them for water but they are way to expensive for that.....but greenguide.com says #2 HDPE and #5 PP are the safest containers, others break down and release carcinogenic dioxins..these vittles vaults are #2 HDPE very good...I was just wonder how to use and what sizes....Flumom you use these what do you say????could you store right in them like rice  etc....they would be great for small packages of spices and mixes...I would think the 15lb. size would be good for this... ????

I love them and they have saved my marriage! I have put up to 90 lbs of 5 lb vacuum packed flour bags in one of the upright Vittles vaults. I keep my choc. chips, cereals, cake mixes, pasta, any dry goods that mice or bugs could get into in the stackable vaults.

I purchased what would fit into a space in my basement. I number each container and then have a list of what and where everything is stored so it is easy to find. You can really pack these and they are air tight and water tight.

I purchased the biggest because you get more for your money. I would store things like rice in plastic bags and flour in their bags. If you have a vacuum packer even better. If you store direcly in the vault get Oxygen absorbers so that bugs cannot grow from within the rice or dry foods.

If you are looking for water storage I have a cheap and storable system for that also.

Hope this helps!

Yes Flumom tell us about a cheap water storage.........
right now I'm using  Reliance Auqua-tainer   7 gallon  containers...but was  thinking of using  3.5 or 6 gallon buckets food safe of course with the Gamma seals they sell at US plastics they are $8. these seals make these size buckets into vittle vaults..

Ok here is my thinking...we will need water for the first few weeks after the water is off so I purchased the water cubes that come packed with no handles, with serving taps, and a box that allows the cubes to be stacked 3 high to take up less room when filled. When not filled these cubes take up very little room. The Emergency Cube Kit comes with 18 cubes, 18 boxes, and 18 quick serve taps and 18 caps. Cost of 58.00 plus shipping for 18 - 5 gallon stackable containers. Without shipping charges that is 3.23 for 5 gallons storage. The shipping container is about 36" x 36" x 36" and there is room for more storage of other non- perishable items in this shipping carton which I will use soon for paper products.

You need to add bleach even to tap water to make sure it stays good for weeks...just an added note. So you will need to add bleach to these 5 gallon containers too.

This gives you 90 gallons of clean water when you need it all you have to do is fill them ASAP when the water is still on like as soon as you hear about the BF hitting some where. I have a total capacity of 200 gallons with my other water stuff.

That means with 3 people 3 gallons drinking and food water per day I have 66 days of water in that time I will figure out where I will need to get water from lake, streams, ponds for my Berkey water filter system to clean along with my Miox and bleach additions to make sure everything is killed in the water.

Call these people at Cube 4 Water and find out what the shipping costs is to your home but I would think it will be cheaper than buckets and way easier to store and pour from.

To be honest I pray that power and water will come on every so often so that I can refill these Cubes and then put this water through my filters to be sure it is ok.

Hope this helps!

http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=USPlastic&category%5Fname=&product%5Fid=26692&cookie%5Ftest=1

This is the address for U.S. Plastics, specifically the Vittles Vault. You can go just to www.usplastic.com ...they also have the buckets you are looking for and they may be cheaper. They have the Vittles Vaults and Containers. Like I said purchase the largest one you can for your space because you get more bang for your buck.

Petco has these also but I do not know if they have the largest ones. Check it out and be sure to ask about shipping from U.S.Plastics they are not heavy but they are big and you want to know how much they will totally cost you delivered.

Like I said the Emergency Cube Kit I believe is a great bargan for water storage. I believe that water is more important than food. I know I could go 1 year with huge cuts in food and be the better for it but, water keeps us alive.

Hope this helps!

Flumom and everybody I have this crazy thought.......I need to research on this but what if you take those big insulated water jugs and take out the spigot and use a sealant to fill in the hole..you would have a vittles vault at a lot lower price. The research come into play with the sealant..If any one has an idea on this fire away...I'll let you know if I come up with anything......

Good buy on the Vittles Vault Starspirit!! I love a great sale!

You could most likely use a big insulated water jug. Just remember, stackable and most of those water jugs are not stackable. You need to conserve space unless you have unlimited space.

I would go with 5 or 6 gallon buckets rather than water jugs. U.S. Plastics also has 5 and 6 gallon buckets with those seal lids available and they may be cheaper.

Keep thinking and asking that is how we will all learn.

You can get the 5 gallon food grade buckets free if you go to Sam's Club and ask at the bakery department. They get their cake frosting in them. You will probably have to clean them out yourself, but they were happy to give me a few.

When I was thinking of this I forgot about the Gamma Seal lids that fit the buckets...my hands don't work like they use to,arthritis ,so the lids that come on the ice tube will have to be replaced with gamma seal lids..just a brain fog I guess....Thanks for reminding me.....
