Just a note:

I was suppose to get my flu shot end of Oct.   at work.   And I told my docter this he insisted I not wait and get it now at his office.  Just incase they ran out.   I said that I was on vacation and I didn't want the shot at this time I would wait.  Well  he didn't let me leave without getting the shot He firmly insisted on me getting it now.   That is a first.
Cause I never get the shot at his office and he knows that.  He knows I get it at work for free.  And I didn't get charged for the flu shot from the docters office cause he said its part of my docters visit.  Odd.............

They gave out flu shots shots for free where my husband works this past week. The clinic where I go is not getting their shots in until November, so my daughter and I won't get ours until November, which we couldn't take it now anyway because we are both sick with bronchitis Unhappy and on antibiotics and steroids.

Levygoddess, that is pretty strong stuff you are taking,  good Doc, must be it went right to your lungs?  Yes, with the cool kits they have these days, they should.  Soon you will be able to buy a test in Walgreens.  It's great,   will wonders never...

Hope you are feeling better LevyGoddess, what state are you in? Annie

http://www.cidrap.umn.edu/cidrap/content/influenza/general/news/oct1408flu.html

Seven states report sporadic flu cases

Oct 14, 2008 (CIDRAP News) – In a sign that influenza season is approaching, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently reported that a handful of states have seen sporadic flu cases and that the earliest signs suggest that this year's vaccine is a good match for circulating strains.

For the week that ended Oct 4, the CDC said in an Oct 10 update that seven states reported sporadic seasonal influenza activity: California, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, New York, and Wyoming. Forty-one other states reported no activity, and two—Montana and Washington—did not report.

Over the summer months (May 18 through Sep 27), the CDC antigenically characterized a small number of influenza isolates, the report said. Of the six isolates, four were type A/H1, one was type A/H3, and one was type B. "All six viruses are antigenically similar to the components selected for the 2008-2009 influenza vaccine," the CDC said. For the H1 component the vaccine strain is similar to A/Brisbane/59/2007, for the H3 component, A/Brisbane/10/2007, and for the B component, B/Florida/4/2006.

Reports from  US labs affiliated with the World Health Organization and the National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System say that of 40 influenza viruses identified during September, 1 (2.5%) was an H1 virus, 4 (10%) were H3 viruses, 29 (72.5%) were nonsubtyped A viruses, and 6 (15%) were B viruses.

Last year a number of countries, including the United States, reported increased resistance of H1N1 viruses to the antiviral drug oseltamivir (Tamiflu). The CDC said that since May 18 it has tested 10 isolates for antiviral resistance. It found that 2 of 6 H1N1 viruses showed resistance to oseltamivir, but no resistance was found in H3N2 and B viruses. All retained sensitivity to zanamivir (Relenza), the other neuraminidase inhibitor.

Of six type A viruses tested for resistance to the older flu drugs known as adamantanes, two were positive: one H3N2 virus and one of five H1N1 viruses.

"Based on the level of oseltamivir resistance in only one influenza subtype, H1N1, and the persisting high levels of resistance to the adamantanes in H3N2 viruses, CDC continues to recommend the use of oseltamivir and zanamivir for the treatment or prevention of influenza," the report said. "Use of amantadine or rimantadine is not recommended."

I am in Arkansas but I will tell you, there are alot of people sick with pneumonia...the doctors arent testing anything they are just giving out antibiotics after chest xray shows it. I dont get it...I know that it is wide spread here because several people are out of work and the ones that are there are still hacking and coughing.  The Arkansas Dept of Health here is awful in my opinion. Thats why I worry about the panflu so much because I see on a daily basis the incomptence. When people brought up the wide spread of MRSA in our homeless population, they actually went on tv to say there is no need for concern that we really dont have a problem...I just have no faith in these people.

My daughter's piano teacher is in her mid or upper 80's and has pneumonia. She has been out for 3 weeks...her brother is caring for her since she has been sooo ill. poor thing. I didn't know pneumonia is going around. My mom is in her 80's but had her pneumonia shot last year or year before. I think you get them every 5 years right? I can't remember if I got one or not. How would I find out. I don't know if I did where either:O(
We are all getting our flu shots next week though. My daughter has asthma and mom is old so they definitely need it according to CDC.

Just had a physical last week, my lung Dr. said that I needed to be careful because a very bad virus that lead to pneumonia was going around, it lingers for a long time. I Know several who are sick with it. Something is out there. They told me to notify them right away, if I caught it.

I have had the pneumonia shot!!! Ive had this for going on 3 weeks, it will not let go. If Im not better by Friday, I guess I will go BACK to the doctor. I wonder why she didnt treat it with cipro or biaxin. Apparently a z pack and doxycycline isnt strong enough. Im so sick of being sick and I have preps and organizin to do!!! Im trying to work but I barely make it each day to only sleep as soon as I get home. Still have coughing fits (pee in your pants kind) and gag like Im going to throw up...its embarassing.

Levygoddess, have you tried cupping your hand and patting your chest both sides and have someone do your back...helps break up the cough for us.  And try the old fashioned honey and lemon 1 part honey 2-3 parts lemon and sip a little bit often....this works for us.
