1,000 tied to N.Y. school report flu-like symptoms Tetsuro Yamada and Yo****oshi Sasaki Yomiuri Shimbun Correspondents WASHINGTON/NEW YORK--More than 1,000 people with links to St. Francis High School in New York, including students, teachers and their families, have influenzalike symptoms, New York health authorities announced Friday. The school, in the Queens district of New York, is thought to be at the epicenter of an outbreak of a new type of flu in the city. In attempt to understand the extent of the problem, the city authorities conducted an Internet-based survey and received responses from 1,996, or about 80 percent, of the school's students and 210 of its teachers. People who claimed to have had symptoms since mid-April included 659 students and 23 teachers, representing 30 percent and 10 percent of the school's teachers and pupils, respectively. Most said they had developed symptoms between April 22 and 25, suggesting the infection had spread very quickly. Since only eight students developed symptoms on or after April 27, it is thought the outbreak at the school is winding down. About one-third of the students who developed symptoms said family members also exhibited symptoms such as high temperature or coughs. If these people also are added to the tally, more than 1,000 people likely were infected in connection with the school. The fact that only six students and one teacher have traveled to Mexico suggests that most cross-infection occurred in the United States. However, the survey results might contain information on people who have seasonal flu or a common cold, as the new strain of flu cannot be diagnosed by symptoms alone. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, said Friday there had been no major problems up until the present time. (May. 4, 2009) Source: http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/dy/national/20090504TDY06312.htm |

Please Wolfman...many people who are not preppers will read the Fourm and telling people to leave their homes is not a reality.
That statment is not helpful and makes Preppers look like nuts. Harsh statment but true. We need to help people prep for at least 2 weeks and hopefully 1-3 months. Let's be helpful not doomsday. |

This school reopened today after being closed all last week. I have not heard any news of the flu spreading beyond the people associated with the school (yet). |

Update- just heard mayor bloombrrg of nyc say there are more cases spread from those 1000 that wete linked to the prep school. He said there were also some cases with no known connection to that school or to mexico. I haven't seen any sick people in public but obviously they're out there. |
