Tasik, West Java ::: People worry infection from undiagnosed dead cats

COMMENT:  I wanted to post here even though the cats have not been diagnosed yet so that we could try to pull our research together quickly to figure this one out sooner rather than later.  I thought it was very odd and wanted some input right away.  Thanks TIP

Tasik, West Java – People in Kampung Galumpit, Desa Purwarahayu, Kecamatan Taraju, Kabupaten Tasik have buried dozen of cats until this news released. Those cats were found suddenly died.

This incident caused fear among locals to any possibility of animal derived infectious disease infection to human such as bird flu or swine flu.

According to local police officer, Juanda, about ten cats were reported suddenly died in Kampung Galumpit, while some other deaths were not reported by locals. The same incidents were also reported from the, Paguyuhan, a village next to Kampung Galumpit.

People suggested this as an uncommon situation. Occasionally, cats might get intoxication by consuming pesticide used to kill rats by farmers which is usually kept at rice fields. But this practice is not common during dry season. Moreover, those cats were housed and rarely going out.

Following to this incident, people requested Livestock Service to do further investigation to prevent any possible transmission to human.

Di Taraju, Puluhan Kucing Mati Misterius

TASIK, Priol - Di Kampung Galumpit, Desa Purwarahayu, Kec. Taraju, Kab. Tasik, bukan domba yang mati mendadak, melainkan kucing. Hingga hari kemarin, sudah puluhan kucing yang terpaksa dikuburkan warga.
Warga khawatir penyakit yang menyerang kucing tersebut bisa menyerang manusia seperti halnya flu babi atau flu burung.
Di Kampung Galumpit sendiri sudah lebih dari 10 kucing yang mati secara mendadak. Warga merasa heran dengan kejadian tersebut. Pasalnya jika kucing-kucing itu memakan racun tikus yang biasa disimpan di sawah, jelas tidak mungkin karena saat ini musim kemarau dan kucing-kucing tersebut tidak pernah keluar rumah.
Selain di Kampung Galumpit, hal sama terjadi di kampung sebelah, yakni Panguyuhan.
Polisi Desa Purwarahayu, Juanda, mengatakan, berdasarkan laporan warga yang masuk ke pihak desa, di Kampung Galumpit ada 10 ekor kucing yang mati secara mendadak. Namun menurut kabar banyak juga kucing yang mati tetapi tidak melapor ke Desa karena menganggap hal yang biasa.
"Memang saat ini warga mulai khawatir, takut menular pada manusia. Mereka ingin ada penelitian lebih lanjut terhadap peristiwa itu," ungkapnya Minggu (27/9) kemarin.
Ny  Saonah (55) warga setempat mengatakan empat kucing peliharaan miliknya yang sering menunggui "goah" padi ditemukan sudah tak bernyawa. Padahal sehari sebelumnya kucing-kucing tersebut tampak sehat.
"Sonten ucing teh katingali masih keneh jagjag, mung pas ditingali enjing-enjing tos gempar, paeh sadayana. Padahal eta ucing teh teu dipasihan nu aneh-aneh," ungkapnya.
Warga lainnya Emar, Ejen dan Nana juga mendapai kucing peliharaan penjaga "goah" mati secara mendadak. Padahal kucing tersebut tidak mengalami sakit terlebih dahulu.
Menurut Juanda, warga saat ini sangat mengharapkan agar Dinas Peternakan bisa meneliti penyebab kematian kucing tersebut jangan sampai kematian kucing terus meluas dan akhirnya menular pada manusia.
"Pihak desa sudah melaporkan peristiwa tersebut pada dinas terkait, namun sampai saat ini masih belum ada penanganan. Kami berharap masalah ini segera ditangani," tegasnya.

Apr 14, 2006 (CIDRAP News) – As many countries continue to battle H5N1 avian influenza, global animal-health officials are offering bad news and good news about the role of two players in the situation: Indonesia and cats.
 
 
 
The director of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), Dr. Bernard Vallat, called Indonesia an avian flu "time bomb" because of what he considered its weak response to poultry outbreaks, according to an Agence France-Presse (AFP) report today.
 
 
 
"Indonesia is a time bomb for the region," Vallat told AFP. Calling the situation there a cause for "great concern," he said, "It is important for the Indonesian government to take the political decision" to step up its control efforts.
 
 
 
Vallat called on international creditors to "intervene massively" to help stop the virus's spread in Indonesia. In addition to many poultry outbreaks of H5N1, the country has had 31 human cases with 23 deaths, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
FAO, OIE downplay role of cats
 
 
On the positive side, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the OIE yesterday rejected a suggestion from European researchers that cats may play a significant role in spreading the H5N1 virus. Felines ranging from house cats to captive tigers have been infected on a number of occasions.
 
 
"From the data that have accumulated since the start of the current avian influenza crisis (end of 2003), cats do not appear to play any discernible role in the transmission of the virus in the natural setting," the organizations said in a joint statement. They said the species that spread the virus "are essentially domestic and wild birds."
 
 
The European experts, writing last week in Nature, had asserted that cats could be "more than a dead-end host" for the H5N1 virus, possibly giving it a chance to improve its ability to spread among mammals. They recommended that cats be protected from exposure and that potentially exposed cats be tested.
But the FAO and OIE said they agreed with an earlier WHO conclusion that "there is no present evidence that domestic cats can play a role in the transmission cycle of H5N1 viruses."
 
 
 
Still, cats should be kept away from infected birds, the groups said. "In view of the susceptibility of certain individuals of this species, it is recommended that cats in infected zones and surveillance zones set up around avian influenza outbreaks be kept indoors," they stated.
The FAO and OIE also said that among wild birds involved in spreading H5N1, evidence indicates that aquatic birds "play a major role." About 50 species of wild birds have proved susceptible to the virus, the groups said.

The Indonesian Government has declared that rabies is present in Bali. A small number of people with rabies like symptoms have died recently after being bitten by dogs. Visitors to Bali are strongly advised to avoid direct contact with dogs, cats, monkeys and other animals. If bitten or scratched, you should seek immediate medical attention.

what happens when you mix earthquake with pandemic?
 
No clean water, and people infecting others with terrible chaos..   God punishes countries with earthquakes but the end times in bible suggest earthquakes being more numerous and disease and we gotta try and get through all of this but we need to thank God,
 
For allowing no bad earthquake here in the USA (YET) because we are lucky compared to other countries.

Have been following this site for three years just recently registered to post.. The death and destruction will keep increase in the near future, things will get a lot worse for all of us.

happy camper, please no dooms day stuff from the Bible. I believe the Bible is the word of God and he wants us to be happy people that believe in Him and live a good life. But to use the Bible and God to make us fear...NO!

I have prepped because like the prepaired brides I want to have enough oil for my lamp. I have watched my child die and my husband die so death is not to be feared but a step to a better place.

It is being here and living through bad times that I am prepping for and I have accomplished that. Get prepped you will feel better but please don't come to this fourm thinking you can scare people with the Bible. God said in Revelation that we would not know the time of his second coming and I believe Him. So cool your jets and join in the conversations that we have to help each other get through this life with it's problems.

FluMom, I did not intend for my comment to strike fear in anyone. The bible statemeents are not to be feared, "rejoice for your redemtion draweth nigh" Yes "no man knows the hour or day of his coming" but you will knnow the season, we are told to watch for the signs that signal his second coming. I believe that we are living in the end of this earths history, earthquakes, disease, violance, wars and preverted sex are signs that we were told to watch for. We will not be capable of sureviving the time of trouble that is ahead of us without his help. I am sory if you mis-took my comments as a statement of fear.

Hate to tell you this one happy camper we have had earthquakes, disease, violence, wars and preverted sex since Sodom. Yes, we could be in end times but I never try to second guess God. I leave all that worry up to Him. I just try to spread His good word to help people know Him and try bring people closer to Jesus. This is what God wanted Christians to do.

Leave the bad crap to God he will take care of us who believe in Him and those of us who lead others to Him. Love and care will bring people not telling them that God is going to cause suffering. God expects us to be prepared and help others if bad times come...that is what I am doing I know you are doing the same.

So like I said, I suggest you cool your jets on the economic strife, disease, preverted sex and we are in the end times that is not how Jesus got followers and believers he used love and understanding. Just a suggestion not an order...I am not like that... you have a right to say what you want! I meant no hurt or harm to you.

Happy Camper....hi.  I originally brought this topic (dead cats) to this forum so that we could put our heads together to find some scientific explanation as to what cause them to die like they did.  I really have had a belly full of heaven/hell end of man (sorry ladies) prophesies.  IMHO they are always false.  And every generation thinks they are the ones to be living in the end of times.  pleeeeeeeease start another thread so that I don't have to accidently stumble on this type of reading anymore.  It is really not related to this event what so ever.  I would like to see the science....claims need backing up and the bible is always subject to interpretation.  I have nothing against the bible just post it elsewhere.

According to the newspaper "Middle," the director of the clinic, Dr Khalid Ambassav explained that cats died for their inability to resist the virus. They suddenly stopped eating, had high body temperature above 40 deg C [104 deg F], "increased fluid in the cat's body, bulging stomach, lack of balance and inability to walk, and cirrhosis of the liver, and destroyed kidneys", resulting in the death in a period not exceeding 3 days.
