Does anyone know what essential oils might be helpful to stock? I'm thinking eucalyptus and peppermint. What else?

And where to get them? -- Libby

 For once I agree with Virusil!!  Oregano oil is by far one of the best anti viral, anti bacteria, pain reliever etc.  I have to tell you, pretty powerful stuff, it numbs your entire mouth.  If you are going to invest in oregano oil, ensure it is 70-to 80% pure organic oregano oil, there are a lot of products out there mixed with a lot of other components which reduces the effectiveness of the oil overall.  Oregano oil can be quite expensive!---the good quality ones--- I have also lavender oil, eucalyptus, clove oil, tea tree oil and lauric acid>not an essential oil but something for reducing viral loads.
I am not here to reason, I am here to create"

Hi - I have a number of essential oils stocked up.

My first choice for anti-viral activity is  Origanum vulgare essential oil:

The USDA's Agriculture Research Service has a Phytochemical and Ethnobotanical database compiled by Dr. James Duke. His entry is for Origanum vulgare, without distinguishing whether it is the species or one of the subspecies, or a mix. However, the constituents are probably closely similar, if not identical; the concentration of the constituents will vary according to whether it is the species or one of the sub species that was analysed. The data additionally identifies, amongst the 119 or so chemical compounds listed:

alpha-humulene, antitumor activity;
low amounts of beta-elemene, anti cervix cancer activity;
caffeic acid, antiviral, anticarcinogen, antioxidant, antiinflammatory, anti sunburn, hepatoprotectant, immunostimulant;
delta cadinene, antiacne, antibacterial, testosterone inducer;
rosmarinic acid, antianaphylactic, antibacterial, antioedemic, antihepatotoxic, antiherpetic, antiinflammatory, antilipo-peroxidant, antifreeradicular, antishock, antiviral, cancer preventive, pesticide;
ursolic acid, anti-HIV, antiarthritic, antidiabetic, antihepatotoxic, antihistaminic, antiinflammatory, antimutagenic, antioxidant, antitumor, antiulcer, antiviral, cancer preventive, hepatoprotective, pesticide, piscicide

Carvacrol is one of the most important and characteristic components of oregano essential oils. It has been noted as having antibacterial, antiinflammatory, antimelanomic, antioxidant, antiplaque, anti free radicular, antiseptic, antifungal and anti worm activity in greater or lesser concentrations, along with other positive, and some negative, activity. The activity is sometimes only present when concentrated in the laboratory to an un-natural degree.

Oregano oil distilled from the leaves and flowers has been shown to be active against both fungi and bacteria. The phenolic compounds carvacol and thymol have well known antiseptic properties, and both oregano and thyme (which also contains thymol) have been used for millenia as effective herbal remedies (Theophrastos, who lived from 372-287 B.C., described oregano and its use ). The activity of some compounds is uncertain, as is the effect of all the compounds working together, but may well play an important part in the protectant and medicinal effect of true Greek oregano. When the leaves are dried in controlled optimal conditions, the health giving benefits are conserved in the dried kitchen herb.

General antioxidant effects
A recent study (Zheng, W. et al. 2002. Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, Vol 49: pp 5165-5170) of culinary and medicinal herbs identified oregano as the the herb with the greatest antioxidant activity. It scored higher than any fruit or vegetable previously tested. Oreganum had higher antioxidant activity than even vitamin E.

**********

General Properties
The essential oil has the properties of its phenols: carvacrol and thymol.
Powerful, broad-spectrum antibacterial****

Some other essential oils I keep on hand at all times in my traveling essential oil first aid kit:

EUCALYPTUS (Eucalyptus globules)

Some of this oil's properties are expectorant, decongestant, insecticide, analgesic, antirheumatic and antiseptic. Inhibits proliferation of the cold virus. Deters mosquitoes and other insects. Effective in all types of fever, lowers the temperature, makes breathing easier, loosens phlegm. It is one of the most valuable oils for treating the respiratory system. According to research, the spraying of a 2% emulsion containing eucalyptus oil kills off 70% of local, airborne staphylococci. It also eases muscle and joint aches and pains Eucalyptus stimulates circulation, increasing the flow of blood to affected areas. Eucalyptus can be mentally stimulating – it ‘opens you up’ and may help increase concentration.

LAVENDER (Lavandula angustifolia) Among its many properties, it's known to be analgesic, antidepressant, antirheumatic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, antiviral, bactericide, cicatrizant, decongestant, deodorant, diuretic, fungicide, sedative. Soothes the spirit, relieves anger, valuable in manic-depressive cases. Has a sedative action on the heart, assists in bringing down high blood pressure, relieves insomnia, relieves muscular spasms and rheumatic pains. The first essential oil one should reach for in the case of minor burns and sunburn. Useful with menstrual problems, bronchitis and headaches, helps lower blood pressure. Useful in a diffuser in the delivery room. May be useful in nausea, vomiting and colic. Keeps insects at bay. Purifies the air. Promotes growth of new skin cells, great healing effect on burns and sunburn, acne, psoriasis, boils, fungal growths, and scarring. Lavender is one of the safest essential oils to use with children and the elderly. Lavender is great for relaxing in the tub, or diffusing for soothing, relaxation, or wooing sleep.

PEPPERMINT (Mentha x Piperita) Peppermint is one of the 'basic necessities' for a first aid kit. It is one of the oils often recommended for easing migraines (especially those stemming from digestive problems); it helps clear congestion in the sinuses; it can ease indigestion (one drop on a sugar cube, or in a spoonful of honey.) Mentally, it clears the brain, helps concentration, is a restorative in cases of mental fatigue, and a mental stimulant. Obviously not an oil to use in the evening when you are seeking sleep, but great in the car to help keep the driver alert. Peppermint is the ideal remedy for all digestive disorders, including nausea and vomiting. It is a great remedy for car or air sickness.

In a massage, it helps stimulate the lymph system. It is also an analgesic and aids with treating sore muscles and joint pain. In skincare, a very weak dilution (less than 1%) is helpful for easing itching or irritation. (I add a few drops to Calamine Lotion to treat Poison Ivy!) Definitely a case where "less is more" since in a higher concentration it will be irritating. One or two drops of peppermint added to a bath is wonderfully cooling; however more than that is TOO cold.

TEA TREE (Melaleuca Alternifolia) Tea Tree has won a reputation as a 'cure all' because of its powerful anti fungal, anti viral and antibacterial properties. It is the first suggestion for athlete's foot, nail viruses and other fungal infections.

Often used in anti acne remedies, as well as in diffuser to combat the flu and other viral infections. It is often recommended as the remedy for a vaginal candida infection.

Also Tea Tree is very supportive of the immune system; I use it in a 5% dilution in a carrier oil to massage the thymus gland (located under the sternum) to activate the immune system

VITAMIN E OIL

D-Alpha is the most active form of vitamin E. It is used in skin care to protect cells against the effects of free radicals – it’s an antioxidant. Vitamin E moisurizes the skin, promotes wound healing and aids in the prevention of scars and stretchmarks.

Blessings,
Doreen

One thing about clove oil - it does numb the painful tooth - but be very careful to just get the clove oil on the sore tooth - not on the surrounding tissue.  Eugenol - a phenol - is the main biochemical componant of clove oil and is very harsh on mucus membranes.  It is a powerful, broad-spectrum antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasite and excellent anti-viral, as well.

I love the smell diffused with orange - great to disinfect the air!

Doreen

From what I understand, oregano oil is a good antiviral/antibacterial, although its taken in very small doses because its very potent...

It has been shown to be effective reversing pain and inflammation.

Uses for Oregano Oil

  • excellent germicide capable of killing various fungi
  • useful against bacterial infections and parasites.
  • combating diarrhea and intestinal gas
  • digestive problems
  • migraine headaches
  • candida
  • eczema
  • athletes foot
  • sore throat, breathing problems
  • immediate relief from bee stings, venomous bites
  • fighting dandruff, diaper rash and other skin disorders
it is also is also a powerful pain killer.

In Herbal Renaissance, Steven Foster credits oregano as having "been employed to treat indigestion, diarrhea, nervous tension, insect bites, toothache, earache, rheumatism and coughs due to whooping cough and bronchitis (primarily for it's antispasmodic effects)." The ancient Greeks were among the first to take advantage of oregano's medicinal qualities. The Greeks termed the spice origanos, meaning "delight of the mountains." Although there are a wide variety of plants that are confused with oregano-including marjoram, thyme and sage-true oregano grows wild in Mediterranean regions such as Greece and Turkey. The wild oregano is the source of surprisingly potent oil of oregano.

I have had excellent results using pure Oregano essential oil - I  use 3 drops in a gelatin capsule. I have stopped colds and flus dead in their tracks using it - everytime.  In the case of a well established cold/flu - I would go up to taking the 3 drop dose 2x a day for up to 4-5 days.

I am not a doctor, and I would not reccomend this to anyone with gallbladder or liver problems.

How do you use Anise oil?  Is it just to be inhaled like aromatherapy?  I have a diffuser.  I also have some eucalyptus oil and oregano oil caplets.

One of my faves is Olbas oil - I suffer from tons of sinus woes, and this really helps relive all sorts of nasty sinus pressure/pain - it also helps greatly with congestion when you have cold or flu - it's gentle enough that it can be used for babies and the elderly alike - heck - I even rub a bit in my guinea pigs cage when one of them is sniffling a bit.

Thanks for all the great suggestions!

I have found two pain sprays with essential oils that I use for fibromyalgia and sore muscles and joints.
"Biofreeze" comes in a gel or spray.
The ingrediants are Natural Menthol, Arnica Extract, Eucalptus Oil, Ilex Herbal Extract, Lavender Oil, Lime Oil, Natural Camphor, Nutmeg Oil, Orange Oil, Peppermint Oil, Pine Oil, Polysorbate 20, SD Alchohol 39-C, Thyme Oil and White Tea Extract.
Around here, I can get it from my osteopathic doctor or at a pharmacy, it doesn't need a rx, but I have to ask the pharmacist for it...for some reason they don't put it out on the shelf. There is a website...Biofreeze.com

The other is called 'That stuff for pain' and the ingredients are:
Menthol, Water, 2-Propanol, Jojoba Oil, Camphor Oil, Eucalyptus Oi, and Peppermint Oil. This is made in Canada and I found it at the local hardware store. The company is 'Accent Health'. It works well too, but is more expensive than the Biofreeze...Biofreeze is $15 for a 4oz(118ml) spray bottle and 'Stuff' is $19 for 60ml. Lucky for me, my osteopath likes to barter with his patients and I traded him some stuff for 6 bottles of Biofreeze.

I have some of the separate oils that are listed in these sprays and plan on adding them in to extend the sprays. I can cut down on my pain meds quite a bit by using the sprays.

I have cittronella for insect repellent, lavender for stress busting, tea tree oil for healing skin ailments, clovebud for dental needs, and eucalyptus for colds and coughs.  They range from $2.03 to $6.00 on up.

Just wonderful to have BF or not.

I also have sweetgrass for those of you in to Native American stuff.

Frankincense and Oregano are Must Have's. I teach essential oil classes all over the country and those two are the two that have the most uses and most powerful impact. My website is www.essentialoilexpert.com. If you have any questions let me know or if you would like to look at the source I use for my wholesale account, I'm happy to send you some more information.

I have used Tea Tree Oil extensively. It is an antibiotic and is good for cat scratches, bites, topical infections, etc. I have used it diluted as a mouthwash for dental infections. It is an absolute no-no on animals. It is poisonous for them. They will lick it off and once internal, it's not pretty. Think of Tea Tree Oil as a staple in the medicine cabinet, especially with kids "owees".

Fiumom, I have used 10 year old oils and no problem, only had 2 oils go rancid and that was because the lid had been left loose, I keep my oils in a aromatherapy chest which basically a box with a good fitting lid, store your oils like you would medicationm a cool place with little light

A cautionary note, clove oil is great for tooth pain, a couple of years ago here in the UK  a 3 year old boy watched his Dad use clove oil then drank the 3mls content of the bottle, even though he received imediate medical treatment he died 5 days latter from liver failure,
arromatherapy oils are very concentrated and need to be diluted, there is only one oil that comes to mind that can be used neat and that is Lavender & which can be used on babies skin [diaper rash], it is used in Burn units in France and the Uk, My Brother had 2nd and 3rd degree burns. I use lavender oil on cuts and scrapes, rubbed on the temple for headaches, a couple of drops on a pillow slip to help me sleep.

I use a mixture of lavender oil, ylang ylang, chamomile, peppermint, frankensense and myrrh to help with my vertigo. just a drop or two behind the ears. It helps me a lot because I have chronic vertigo. I use eucalyptus oil in a humidifier. Eucalyptus has so many uses but definitely needs to be diluted as do most. Some oils are way more concentrated than others, be sure to read up on them. There might be some free books on the Kindle app for tablets/phone.
Be prepared! It may be time....^_^v
