Two properties south of Brisbane have now been quarantined after a horse died of Hendra virus on Sunday.

Health authorities know of at least three people - the horse's two owners and a vet - who had contact with the infected horse at the farm in Kerry, near Beaudesert, before it died.

A vet treating the thoroughbred at the 40-hectare farm contacted Biosecurity Queensland and the state’s health department yesterday to report the death.

Eight potentially exposed to Hendra virus

June 30, 2011 - 2:34AM

Eight people have a long and anxious wait to be cleared of the potentially fatal Hendra virus.

A vet is among the eight who came into contact with an infected horse that died in southeast Queensland on Sunday.

Acting chief health officer Dr Aaron Groves said all involved were believed to have had a low to moderate level of exposure.

Hendra virus vet wore no mask

THE country vet at the centre of the latest Hendra virus scare in Queensland was not wearing a face mask or protective clothing when he treated a horse carrying the deadly, bat-borne disease.

The experienced veterinarian, a partner in a big practice, is among eight people who will have to wait weeks before knowing whether they are in the clear.

Two properties southwest of Brisbane have been quarantined after a thoroughbred horse came down with the virus and died at the weekend. The vet took blood from the infected animal on Saturday on acreage at Kerry - near Beaudesert, 65km south of Brisbane - before its owner took it home to Biddaddaba, 30km west.

Queensland chief veterinarian Rick Symons praised the Beaudesert vet for his vigilance in testing the "shaky and off-colour" horse, but confirmed he had not been wearing full protective gear.

He had donned gloves, but not a face mask nor the overalls recommended for vets confronted by the flu-like symptoms in horses associated with Hendra virus.

I can't believe how complacent some people are. They have to deal with Hendra Virus on a regular basis - you'd at least think the vets and people potentially exposed to Hendra  would take adequate precautions to prevent spreading it or catching it.......

ANOTHER HORSE DIES OF HENDRA VIRUS

A SECOND case of the potentially deadly Hendra virus has been confirmed in Queensland.

A horse became ill at a property at Mount Alford, south of Brisbane, on Friday, and was euthanased.

``Test results overnight have confirmed this as a case of Hendra virus infection,'' Biosecurity Queensland Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr Rick Symons said in a statement.

A second horse at the property also fell ill on June 20 and was euthanased, but it is not clear yet if it too had Hendra.

Eight other horses on the property are being tested for the virus and investigations are underway if they had come into contact with any other horses at adjoining or nearby properties.

It is unclear how many people have come into contact with the infected horse.

Officers from Biosecurity Queensland and Queensland Health will speak with people who treated the animal to determination whether anyone may have been exposed.

    Hendra outbreak threatens eastern states

    July 2, 2011 - 6:59PM

      AAP

Authorities are battling to prevent a serious outbreak of Hendra virus in eastern states, with four horses already dead and dozens of people possibly exposed to the lethal bat-borne illness.

Nine people in NSW and more in Queensland are being monitored for symptoms of Hendra, which is spread via flying foxes and can infect humans.

Two horses have now been euthanased at Mount Alford, south of Brisbane, after showing signs of Hendra.

Another Vet and Mother exposed to Hendra Virus

A former state MP and a mother of two are among seven people to have been exposed to sick horses in a second Hendra virus outbreak in Queensland.

Vet Peter Prenzler, former Lockyer MP, faces a long and anxious wait before he can be cleared of contracting the virus that has killed four out of seven people to have contracted it since the first recorded case in 1994.

"You have to sit back and hope nobody's got it," Dr Prenzler told The Sunday Mail.

"We are anxious. It would be nice to have those blood tests back, but we can't do anything about it."

Biosecurity Queensland says test results from Friday confirmed a sick horse at the Mount Alford property had Hendra virus.

Queensland chief vet Rick Symons said it's believed another horse on the property that died about a fortnight ago was the primary case.

Dr Prenzler says he treated both sick horses that were euthanased.

Another horse tests positive to deadly Hendra virus in southeast Queensland

A FIFTH horse has succumbed to the Hendra virus and there are fears for seven more, as Queensland authorities battle an above average season of the baffling virus.

The horse from a Mount Alford property, near Boonah in the state's southeast, was euthanased today after tests showed it had the bat-borne illness.

The tests also confirmed Hendra caused the death of a horse on the property on June 20.

A vet who treated that horse first thought it had colic, but became suspicious when it showed signs of neurological distress.

The vet, Peter Prenzler, is now waiting for test results to find out whether he has contracted Hendra, which has killed four of the seven people who have contracted the disease since it was first detected in 1994.

The test results mean three horses from the same Mount Alford property have died of the disease, while another outbreak in southeast Queensland has claimed one horse from nearby Kerry.

Queensland chief vet Dr Rick Symons on Monday told reporters seven more horses on the Mount Alford property were at risk of Hendra, even though tests have so far been negative.

Biosecurity Queensland says it suspects another horse has died from hendra virus.

The horse died at a property at Park Ridge, south of Brisbane, last night.

Authorities are awaiting tests to confirm if the horse had hendra.

It was revealed yesterday that another horse on a property near Boonah, south-west of Brisbane, was put down on Monday after testing positive for the deadly virus.

The horse was the third to test positive at a Mount Alford property and the fourth horse to test positive in south-east Queensland in recent weeks.

The hendra virus lives in the guts of flying foxes.

They crap in the feed buckets and the horses get the virus and passes it on to humans.

Is there any danger of humans passing it on to other humans? Will the be a Hendra pandemic sweeping the globe killing all who catch the virus?

Fresh horse death as Australia virus spreads

      (AFP) – 5 hours ago

SYDNEY — Another six people have been tested for the deadly Hendra virus after it claimed the life of a seventh horse, officials said Thursday, as the killer outbreak spread south.

At least 32 people have now been exposed to Hendra, a rare virus spread from horses which can cause fatal respiratory illness in humans, after a second case was confirmed in populous New South Wales state.

"In NSW we now have single horse deaths to Hendra virus on two properties ... and 15 people who have been in contact with the affected horses," said the state's chief veterinarian, Ian Roth.

The latest outbreak, at Macksville, about 500 kilometres (310 miles) from Sydney, is the furthest south it has ever been detected, and only the third time Hendra has been seen in NSW.

One horse died and another three were being monitored, Roth said, adding that it was not believed to be linked to any of the other cases.

There have been three other outbreaks in neighbouring Queensland state since June, exposing 17 people to sick animals.

A total of 32 people are now being tested for the virus, which has killed four of the seven people who contracted it in 18 outbreaks since it was first documented in 1994.

Authorities work to contain latest hendra virus outbreak

      Francis Tapim and Kim Lyell

      Updated July 13, 2011 06:47:48

A cross-border taskforce formed to fight the potentially deadly hendra virus will hold urgent talks in Brisbane today after the fourth outbreak in Queensland in less than three weeks.

Health authorities are today focussing on a property in the state's far north where hendra virus has claimed another horse.

The last reported case in north Queensland was in 2004.

The taskforce was announced this week in response to the outbreaks in Queensland and two in New South Wales in the last three weeks.

In that time, six horses have died or been euthanised.

The taskforce includes the chief veterinarian, health officer and scientist from both states.

The latest outbreak has happened at Blazing Saddles Adventures, west of Cairns.

Dr Jim Thompson from Biosecurity Queensland says measures are being taken to ensure the virus is contained.

He says it is a worrying trend.

"The situation at the property, it's very early days, so we're moving to the property and quarantining the property," he said.

Four staff on the property had contact with the horse before it died.

Concerns over Hendra spread in north Qld

      AAP

Horse breeders and vets in far north Queensland are concerned about the potential spread of the deadly Hendra virus following an outbreak at a trail riding property.

Biosecurity Queensland on Tuesday confirmed a horse had died from the virus at the Blazing Saddles trail riding property west of Cairns.

The property is now in lockdown and four staff who had contact with the horse are being tested for the disease.

There is concern among those who work with horses that the virus could surface on other properties in the region.

Flying foxes, common in north Queensland, are natural hosts of the virus. It's believed bats infect horses via their urine, saliva or birth products.

Are flying foxes known to stay in barns? Do they bite horses? Are there so many flying foxes that their poop is being eaten by horses in the field grass?   I just hope they figure this out because the death of any healthy horse is a shame.

No - people put horse troughs under trees where flying foxes hang upsidedown and crap so the crap goes into the horse food and the horses eat it.

Frutbats - flying foxes only roost in trees - so if they fed the horses in sheds they would be safe.

Its a nasty virus - but while people catch it from horses - they dont spread it to other people.

The flu is the biggest killer.

Caution as hendra cases continue to climb

      Updated July 17, 2011 07:00:29

The spate of outbreaks of the deadly hendra virus in the past month mean people are much more cautious when dealing with horses, authorities say.

Veterinarians say despite eight recent outbreaks, stretching from far north Queensland to New South Wales, the risk of human infection is now lower.

Eleven horses have died or been put down in hendra outbreaks since last month; seven in Queensland and three in New South Wales. More than 80 horses are currently being monitored.

Yesterday, two new outbreaks of the disease were confirmed at Hervey Bay on the Fraser Coast and Boondall in Brisbane's north.

Chief health officer Jeannette Young says so far, all of the people being tested for the disease have a low risk of infection.

"It is very encouraging that the message is certainly out in the vet community about the PPE, the personal protective equipment they should wear. But also I would hope that the general community is hearing the messages and protecting themselves," she said.

Hendra virus: is it time to stop horsing around?

      Updated July 19, 2011 07:30:09

At some point, containment policies just don't work. And with confirmation the latest victim of the deadly hendra virus lived close to Queensland's horse racing hub, you wonder if it's almost at that stage.

The hendra virus has been a matter of public and policy debate since 1994, when Vic Rail, a well-known horse trainer became very ill.

He was dead soon after, along with 14 horses.

Since then, outbreaks have been scattered, both geographically, and over time, but mostly north of the border.

That's changed this time round and while a dozen or so horses have died or been put down in outbreaks in the last month, four have been in NSW.

Officials there are attempting to protect Sydney's Randwick racecourse as a cross-border taskforce, including the chef vets of NSW and Queensland, health officers, the CSIRO, and other scientists try to work out what to do next.

In Queensland, it's more serious, and not just because the latest death is so close to the racing precinct. Up to 45 people are being monitored, just in case the virus jumps from horse to those who have cared for them; an excruciating long wait that requires testing, and retesting.

      Malaysia 'suspends Australian horse imports'

      Updated July 21, 2011 05:31:39

The Federal Government says it has not been told that Malaysia has banned the importation of horses from Australia because of the hendra virus outbreak.

A report from Malaysia says the country has imposed the ban as a precautionary and temporary move.

A spokesman for Agriculture Minister Joe Ludwig says the Federal Government is asking the Malaysian Government for clarification.

The Star newspaper in Malaysia said the ban took effect from July 8 and the ban will be lifted after Kuala Lumpur gets the all-clear from the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service.

"There are no cases of the virus infection here. However, we are taking precautionary measures and monitoring the situation in Australia closely," said Ibrahim Che Embong, the veterinary services department deputy director general.

Dang, I would think that NO ONE would allow Australian Horse Imports with this virus running around unchecked! Just common sense!

Second-round tests negative for Hendra virus in Queensland horses

A GROUP of people who had contact with a Hendra-infected horse in Queensland's south-east have returned negative second-round tests.

Ray Weber, who owns the Kerry property where the horse fell ill last month, says it's great news.

He says about six or seven people associated with the Hendra case have returned negative second-round tests.
But all are still waiting for a third round before they're given the final all-clear.

"It's pretty good mate, I'm pretty happy about it," Mr Weber said today, after receiving the results yesterday.

"We've got another round next month, but this was the one everyone was waiting for."

Twelve horses infected with Hendra have died or been put down since June 20, eight in Queensland and four in New South Wales.

Dozens of people who had contact with the animals are waiting on test results.

      Eighth outbreak of Hendra confirmed

      BY JESSICA MARSZALEK
      25 Jul, 2011 04:00 AM
Queensland's eighth outbreak of the deadly Hendra virus has been confirmed in a horse on the western Darling Downs.

Authorities don't yet know how many people could have been exposed to the sick animal, with passers-by and neighbours possibly having stroked it on the Chinchilla property where it was a pet.

Queensland chief biosecurity officer Jim Thompson said testing yesterday confirmed the horse, which died on Friday, had been infected with the Hendra virus. It had shown rapid onset of the illness last Wednesday and died while a vet was in attendance.

He said the horse was being kept with four others on a small property that would now be quarantined for 30 days and tested.

Staff were visiting the property yesterday to decide whether any human testing or treatment was needed.

Queensland Health chief health officer Jeannette Young said it was thought the vet had been wearing full protective gear, but other people could possibly have had contact with the sick horse.

''Because this property, I understand, is fairly close to Chinchilla there may well have been people who were passing by who might have patted the horse,'' Dr Young said.

''So we'll ... doorknock all the surrounding houses ... just in case they've had any contact with the horse.''

She said 57 Queenslanders were undergoing three rounds of testing, all of which had come back negative so far.

''We know it takes a very large amount of exposure for a human to actually develop the disease,'' she said.

''... We don't expect any of those tests to come back positive.''

Dog tests positive to Hendra virus

      July 26, 2011 - 3:22PM

A dog has tested positive to the potentially fatal Hendra virus for the first time.

The pet kelpie tested positive to the virus last night, authorities announced this afternoon.

It lives on a property near Beaudesert, in south-east Queensland, which was already under quarantine because of a recent Hendra case in a horse.

Fifth NSW horse dies from Hendra virus

      July 28, 2011 - 11:19AM

The horse died at a property near Mullumbimby on the NSW north coast, the Department of Primary Industries confirmed on Thursday.

Day after day I search our MSM and even the not so MSM for developments on the Hendra Virus outbreak.

There appears to be a media blackout in force on this subject as nothing is being reported.
We all know that these types of problems don't magically disappear one day. I've learnt from experience that when the MSM stop reporting things that you know are still happening then it is a bad situation - worse than they are letting on.

Who knows, maybe I'm reading more into this but it just seems strange to me

      Hendra death at Ballina

      Wednesday, 17/08/2011

Another horse has died from hendra virus, this time on a property at Ballina, on the NSW north coast.

The horse became noticeably ill on Sunday, and deteriorated throughout the next day. When tests confirmed it had hendra, it was euthanised late yesterday.

A property near Ballina is now under quarantine.

The senior vet with the Department of Primary Industries, Ian Roth, says two other horses are being monitored. He says it's the fifth property in NSW affected by the virus so far this year.

"We could well expect more cases, I mean that's not going to surprise us. We have to be ready and mindful and on the lookout for it."

Hendra claims three more NSW horses

      Updated August 18, 2011 13:37:06

The recent spate of hendra horse deaths in NSW began on a property near Wollongbar in late June. This horse was one of two to die at the property.

Three more horses have died from the hendra virus on the far north coast of New South Wales.

The latest cases were recorded on properties at South Ballina and Mullumbimby.

It brings the number of horses killed by the virus in NSW in the past eight weeks to nine.

Another 10 horses in Queensland have died or been euthanased since June.

More than 60 people have also been tested for hendra across NSW and Queensland.

A senior vet with the NSW Department of Primary Industries, Ian Roth, says there had more recently been hope the disease had abated.

"The first one was about the 28th of June and we had four cases in a month. We then had three weeks when we didn't have any cases and I guess we were a little bit hopeful," Mr Roth said.

"But now we've had three (properties) in two days so we're not sure what the pattern is but I guess we just can't relax."

Gold Coast horse tests positive to hendra

      Updated August 23, 2011 14:25:24

There has been another confirmed case of hendra virus in Queensland.

A horse on a property in the Currumbin Valley in the Gold Coast hinterland has tested positive to the virus.

Chief vet Dr Rick Symons says authorities were called to the horse-breeding property about 10:00pm on Monday.

"The horse was unsteady on its feet and had a temperature," he said.

"The vet suspected hendra virus, took samples and sent it to the Biosecurity laboratory."

Biosecurity Queensland says 23 horses are on the site and one has tested positive.

Chief health officer Dr Jeannette Young says two people may have been exposed - the vet and the property owner - and there are more people on the site

"I have staff out on the property who are assessing who's been exposed," she said.

Nineteen horses infected with hendra have died or been put down since June 20 (10 in Queensland and nine in New South Wales) and more than 60 people have been tested.

A twelfth case of hendra virus in a horse has been confirmed for Queensland this year.

A horse has been put down in the Caboolture area north of Brisbane and authorities are in the process of quarantining the property

Another horse had died there a week ago and tests are also being done on samples from it.

Worst year ever for Hendra virus

      Updated: 06:49, Wednesday October 12, 2011

      Worst%20year%20ever%20for%20Hendra%20virus

Lack of food for flying foxes could be the reason 2011 is the worst year ever for Hendra virus infections in Queensland, the state's chief vet says

A horse was euthanased on Tuesday after falling ill over the weekend at a property at Beachmere, north of Brisbane.

Another horse died on the same property a week earlier, and samples will now be taken from it to see if Hendra was the cause.

Queensland's chief health officer Dr Jeannette Young says Queensland Health is determining how many people, if any, had contact with the infected horse.

'Preliminary advice is that not a very large amount of people had come into contact,' Dr Young told reporters in Brisbane.

      Quarantine enforced as horse dies

SUNSHINE Coast horse lovers are on alert after the death of a horse from Hendra virus.

A Beachmere property was quarantined late yesterday after the sick horse was euthanised following a positive test for the virus.

A gate on the Beachmere Rd property displayed the warning sign, which read, "The inspector has quarantined the infected premises for an exotic disease of animals pursuant to section 9 (1) of The Exotic Disease and Animals Act 1981.

" The person must not without the permission of the inspector enter of leave the infected premises or bring on to or remove from the premises any animal, carcass, animal product, animal pathogen, biological preparation or property. Maximum penalty $2000 units or two years imprisonment".

Queensland's Chief Health Officer Dr Jeanette Young said public health experts inspected the property to assess the situation and determine how many humans, if any, had contact with the infected horse.

My concern in tracking your posts is this virus is showing signs of becoming more adapted to humans, and then catastrophically jumping species.  It is suspected that this is how the Black Death, smallpox and HIV led to millions of deaths.  I lke to describe it as "this virus is getting smarter!"  We watch monkeypox for this tendency also.  Ominous.  Thank you for keeping us informed.
