Hey all. First time posting here.

This is a March 4th breaking news alert from the BBC.

Chinese officials suspect that a 32 year old man in Guangdong Province has died of H5N1.

From the BBC World Service:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/4773246.stm

Health officials in China fear a man who recently died may have been the country's latest victim of bird flu.

The 32-year-old man died earlier this week in the southern city of Guangzhou, just across the border from Hong Kong.

If he is confirmed to have died from the H5N1 strain of bird flu, it would be the ninth such fatality in China.

Hong Kong is watching closely. The territory has not been affected by the latest outbreak but it was where H5N1 first appeared and jumped to humans.

"Although there is no case in Hong Kong, we are mindful of the large volume of population flow between Guangdong and Hong Kong," a government statement for the territory said.

H5N1 first appeared in Hong Kong in 1997, when it killed six people.

The territory slaughtered its entire poultry flock of about 1.5 million birds.

H5N1 has killed more than 90 people, mostly in East Asia, since it re-emerged in late 2003.

It can be caught by humans who handle infected birds, but is not yet known to have passed from one person to another.

Scientists have warned that if the virus mutates, it could create a pandemic that could kill millions of people.

Last week China said it feared it could suffer a "massive" outbreak of bird flu this spring, if wild birds returning from their winter migration infect farm poultry.

Hi Life.... welcome to our board.  Thanks for the link... Just across the harbour from HK and nightmarishly reminiscent of how SARS got loose.

Thank you for the warm welcome, Sophia.

I have been visiting these forums for a while, and have obtained a great deal of useful info.

By way of introduction, I am the furthest thing from a 'worry wart.'

I am, however, making an exception for the Avian Influenza.

The makings of a human-to-human transmissible pandemic are simply too clear in the offing, I'm afraid.

Agreed.

You know, I (actually hubby) write checks every year that total in the thousands of dollars for various and sundry insurances against misfortune and tragedy.  No one thinks I'm a loon for doing so, in fact, they consider me a responsible citizen for doing so.  Why is preparing for a potential pandemic that is far from being a remote possibility being anything less than a responsible citizen?

Every day more and more people wake to the threat we may be facing.  I am grateful that our little community here plays a small part in providing information and support in that awakening.

Excellent point, SZ! No one thinks we are crazy for having car insurance, health insurance, or homeowner's insurance.  WHY do people think we are "paranoid" or "crazy" for "insuring" ourselves against a possible disaster if bird does become h2h

The only insurance you can buy for H5N1 is preparing your household as much as you are financially able to do.  Of course you have to go on living your life and paying your bills, but any extra money would be best spent getting your family as ready as possible.

IMPORTANT: The Reuters version of this story includes an ominous
addition, highlighted below:

If Beijing confirms the case as avian influenza, Hong Kong public
hospitals and clinics will be required to report any flu cases with unclear
diagnoses to the CHP, the Post said.

Chinese authorities had attempted to muzzle news
coverage, the daily said.

"The Guangdong propaganda and health departments jointly issued a
notice to local media not to report on the case, saying there should be no
coverage until it was confirmed," it said.

Looks like we are getting several cases in several spots around the that half of the hemisohere. Surely the WHO will have to go to level four.

Soon on this forum we will have to do a poll for level 5. I say we need to poll by end of next week.

If they cannot put out the fire in Indonesia and India. We may have to all start thinking about implimenting our home plans soon.'

h2h can be here  at our doors in 2-4 weeks.

Don't forget the reporting time lag and the incubation period. maybe our two weeks are already up.

Some should start to consider home plan soon.

Speculation is the only tool we have with a threat that can circle the globe in 30 days. Test results&news is slow.Factor in human conditions, politics, money&bingo! The truth!Facts come after the fact.
