We were two mutations away from H2H. Now, it appears that we are only one step away. We will never see it coming.
MOSCOW, March 7 (RIA Novosti) - The world is one step away from a bird flu pandemic that cannot be averted by quarantine or vaccination, a Russian expert said Tuesday. "One amino-acid replacement in the genome remains to make the virus transferable from human to human," said Dmitry Lvov, the director of a virology research institute at the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. Lvov said the pandemic virus could strike at any moment, and would most likely come from China, leading to tens of millions of human deaths, or one third of the global population. He added quarantine measures could delay the pandemic for a few days but not prevent it, and that vaccination would not stop people getting sick. "A good vaccine will only save [people] from death and complications, but not from the illness itself," he said. Lvov said any pandemic was based on a hybridization of the bird and human viruses. Pigs are the most vulnerable animals in the face of both human and bird viruses, which makes them "an intermediary link between human and bird flu," he said. Lvov said the bird flu pandemic was irreversible like any other natural cataclysm, and would not stop until the highly pathogenic strain mutates into a less dangerous one. "When will it stop? When highly pathogenic strains localized in wild birds are once again transformed into a low-pathogenic one according to the law of nature," Lvov said. He said all that could be done to deal with the pandemic was large amounts of vaccination, hundreds of thousands of beds in intensive care, and the necessary instruments and medicines. Lvov also said that the bird flu virus would shortly sweep the south of central Russia, specifically the Astrakhan, Rostov-on-Don, and Volgograd Regions. The Agriculture Ministry said Monday that bird flu had been registered in eight regions in the south of the country, a major stopover area for migrating birds. The ministry said over 1.3 million birds had died or been slaughtered in three outbreaks of bird flu since July 2005. |

When I first learned of a possible pandemic about a year ago, it was from an article by this Russian institue.
It seems they speak their minds, unlike others. |

Experts Debate Using Face Masks During Flu
Pandemic POSTED: 6:55 am CST March 7, 2006 WASHINGTON -- How much protection would a face mask offer during a worldwide flu epidemic? And would people need a fresh one every day or even every few hours? There aren't clear answers, public health experts said Monday as the Institute of Medicine grappled with what advice to offer the federal government. Health workers use masks -- simple surgical masks or better-filtering ones called N95 respirators -- to prevent infection while caring for sick patients. But the public undoubtedly will turn to masks as well if a flu pandemic strikes, and experts say supplies will quickly run short. Both types of masks are supposed to be used once and discarded. So federal health officials asked the IOM, a prestigious group of independent scientists, to determine if there are ways that health workers could reuse their N95 masks - and if average citizens need reusable masks, too. The IOM will issue its report this spring. At a public meeting Monday, health experts cited a host of questions. Among them: how long the masks work once donned; whether reused masks could be contaminated and spread infection; how to ensure they're worn correctly -- N95 masks have to be fitted to the user's face and are hard to breathe in for long stretches. And would wearing a mask on, say, the subway protect people enough, or should they have driven or stayed home? Linda Chiarello of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said if masks eventually are recommended for the public, the advice must not create a false sense of security. "The lack of clear data ... is a dilemma for those of us on the front lines," said Dr. Jeff Durchin of the Seattle-King County Health Department, adding that people already call health departments to ask what masks they should personally stockpile. "We should not be talking about the reusability of masks or other devices until we know whether they actually work to begin with," said Jeffrey Levi of Trust for America's Health, a nonprofit health advocacy group. http:// www.nbc5.com/money/7772419/detail.html |

this just made me feel that tingle down my spine. 1/3 of the human population? and if we do survive we'd better quarantine until the vaccine....bf will be around for awhile killing everything in its path.
ok not to be fatalistic, but if this is true, im not sure i want to survive the pandemic...... |

Birds, pigs, cats and probably dogs can all be vectors of H5N1.
Not good. If pigs become infected, we'll already be at the pandemic stage, because their DNA composition is so close to human DNA. But now, experts are warning that mutiple species can transmit this strain of influenza to humans. |

Wow! Somebody finally calling it like it is. Hats off to the Russkies. Time for that final push to the illusive prepping finish line. If things develop quickly - which they could - there are going to be a lot of very confused, panicked, angry, sick, and dying people all over the world - all fighting to get their share of the dwindling pile of resources. I would imagine that governments - the US included - will try to control the news and downplay the reality just like they did in the 1918 scenerio. If you pretend something doesn't exist - then just maybe the bogey man won't get you and noone can blame you. IE. 'Nobody had any idea the levees could breach.' LOL!!!! Look at nuclear bombs and fallout. They have been with us for almost 60 years but how many reading this know the fist thing about what to do if a bomb went off in a nearby city. The government just does not want to deal with issues on this scale. Better to keep the people dumb, ignorant and goin' to the mall - and pick up the pieces later rather than make a rational plan. WHO counts? People don't. |

Let's see, that was some time after an unprovoked attack on Pearl Harbor, if I recall correctly. Besides, what does this have to do with the topic at hand? HangGlider |

Hello, Did I correctly read that in the first article it suggested that the mortality rate could be 1/3 the population? Then in the second article the spin doctors changed the estimates to 1/3 the population infected? Dejuan |

Dejuan I think out of those 2 articles, the 2nd is more relaiable in terms of what the doctor said. Because in the 2nd story the section dealing with 1/3 population infected is a direct quote from the doctor, wheras in the first article its a summary not int he doctors own words.
Estimates that 1 in 3 people could be infected have been around a while, it then just depends what deathrate you use to calculate total deaths. I dont know anybody who suggests 100% mortality, so its not tht likely that a third of the worlds population will die. I suppose it could happen, but the final strain of bird flu that becomes efficient H2H would need to be even more deadly than the current strain for that to happen. |
