I am a very active watermen always in the ocean or the everglades surfing or wakeboarding. Last week my son and I were skateboarding at a local skatepark (FLorida) that borders a lake. The birds like to sit on the rails and poop. I kept flying out of the half pipe and putting my hand on the railing (in the dryed bird poop). Not intentionally it just happened. 2 days later he and I got the worst flu I ever experienced im my life. High fever, bloody noses, coughing, sneezing, headache, bodyache he was on the floor for 2 days neither one of us could move or eat. We usually laugh about the flu and continue doing everything we always do. We are both better, but I still have this dry cough and no energy (2 weeks later). I don't get sick like this, I never get fevers or bloody noses. My question is if I went to the doctor and had them do some tests would they be able to detect H5N1 virus? I don't think I have it I am just curious. But giving my life style I could possibly be 1 of the canary's in the coal mind. |

THanks for the input. I am headed in there tommorrow. Hopefully it is some minor complications. Otherwise you'll never hear about it cause the WHO will cover it up.

Dont be surprised if they treat your request for H5N1 testign as if you are crazy. They wont want to bother testing people until theres confirmed infection in birds in a geographical area where youve been.
Also the testing for H5N1 is a pain in the ass and its quite possible that too much time has passed since you got infected, it can be hard to get a positive H5N1 test result even in people who are dying of something. |

I've actually been wondering about the flu shot I got last Oct. I've been getting one every year since the early 90's when my mother was bedridden. Didn't want to carry a bug to her. We normally get ours at one of the visiting nurse, stand in line and pay a small price locations, but this last October, our health department offered free shots at the fair park for 2 days. Hubby and I both got sick and we never react to the flu shot. I have been sick off and on ever since Oct. Sometimes I think I'm getting paranoid and wonder if they didn't use some of us as unknowing testers for something. Maybe it is just an exceptionally bad year for bugs, but I've never been sick this much in a single year. Each time you think it's gone - it's back 2 or 3 days later.

Oknut" There could be a variety of reasons for the relapse with your cold or flu. After you got sick did you keep re-using the same toothbrush? it might lead to re-infection..it is recommended that when you are sick you should throw your toothbrush out and replace with a new one as there is the possibility for re-infection.

Good points Virusil - I have been using the silver and didn't improve until I did start taking it again. I haven't gone back to being as sick as I was the first few weeks since taking my silver. I was REALLY sick before I started taking my silver again. I'm one of those silly people who normally doesn't use something useful until I'm desperate. Same with my neti pot. I would probably never get sinus infections if I used it when I was well. LOL! Thank you calendula - why didn't I think of that? I'm replacing my toothbrush right after I post this. I hadn't and have been using the same toothbrush throughout most of this battle. I am hesitant to get another flu shot though after this. Normally I float through the winter with no flu or a very mild case. Not only am I going to replace both of my toothbrushes but I think I'll keep a little silver solution in the bathroom to disinfect the new one each time before I use it. Maybe I'll shake this dang bug. |

Virusil: Not necessarily, relapse or reinfection may occur for a hundred and one reasons, interesting enough even the ingestion of over the counter medication to prescribed medication can masks symptoms and evolve from an acute situation to a chronic one, even that being the case we should start with the most simple form of factor causing element. Compromised immune system is a pretty stron term and before you jump to "diagnose " it,one will need a thorough client assessment before reaching that conclusion. Please......please....

I have different one for you:...my 14 year old who was 6 at the time this happened was getting hid last shot for DPTP....and well you know how they always, always!!! say he may get a re-action form the needle...well me being smartie pants mom said well he has already had 2 shots of this..he will be ok....OH NO...we get home and an hour later he is fevered at 103.4...and his leg where the shot was has swelled to the size of a quater..so I called the docs office and the nurse said..he should be ok,but if his temp hits 104 and it swells the size of a golf ball..take him to emerg..so i gave him some tylenol and it ease off..NOT an hour later..up to 104 and bigger then a gold ball...Now the sad thing is he was not having a reaction to the medication...HE was having a reaction to the needle....doc takes needle out of sterilized package and now it is exposed to the air..so on its way into my sons leg it had picked up something in the air(a bug of some type) and was injected into his leg..well now I listen to docs words..when he says the needle he means the needle)
I guess the morale of my story is if you go and get the flu shot it may not be the shot...but the person ahead of you may have sneezed and you picked up there germs..guess we better watch the avian flu shot line-ups |

I have never gotten a flu shot in my life, and I do not intend to,--perhaps I am biased as a natural health practitoner--but I know of some other health care professionals ( providers, nurses etc) that inject the flu-shot but do not take it themselves, it is a matter of a personal choice. If you believe in the long run it will ok with your system, then life is good, if you read about its components and feel might do more harm than good in the long run, then don't do it. |

Muskrat - you must have been scared half to death, having that happen to your baby. I'm so glad your child is ok. I probably do have a compromised immune system because I've had hep C for well over 30 years. I've just never had such a reaction to a flu shot before and never had this much trouble shaking a bug. I'm not seriously sick anymore but still have little fevers and congestion that comes and goes. It's SO much better than it was for weeks and weeks. The whole thing just made me leery of getting another shot. Who knows what may have caused it. You've all made some really good points. Collective thinking is almost always better. Thank you for all of your advise and suggestions. I've already replaced my toothbrushes and am a bit embarrassed that I didn't think of that. Deb |

Virusil: Please, please...please. I like you Virusil, you have some good points, but sometimes you are wrong. Sure, Hep C, HIV, Herpes, blah, blah, they are all manifestations and sure compromise immune system, but so are the medications along with it. Perhaps when it is all over I go to Canada and buy you some absinthe!!

Crack me up Hey guys - I didn't mean to fuel your friendly battles. Have to admit that it's made me smile though. Seriously, I really appreciate all of the great advice (spelled wrong last time) and caring. This forum really is a nice place. Too bad we aren't all meeting for a different reason. Deb |

I had a frightening experience this evening. As I traveled on a major highway ( on the outskirts of a metro area) I drove through an apparent spill of chicken droppings. The area was about 3 inches deep, 50 feet long and across all three lanes of the highway. The car slid a little as I drove through this, even though I let off of the gas and did not attempt to change lanes. I could smell this immediately. In fact, I still feel like I can taste it 2 hours later. I stopped at the car wash to clean the quarter sized pieces off my car, tires and underside of the car. I didn't get it all off. I told my husband that if I get sick- have me tested for bird flu. Where do they take this stuff? Why?

Just got back from the doctor guess what I got? pneumonia now the question is, was it pneumonia or Bird Flu pnemonia. It was actually pretty fun he put the x ray up 1 lung all black 1 lung all white. We both go "HMMMMMM". He said "you've got 1 really nice lung " and I said "and one not so nice lung"?. They put me on antibiotics. HMMMMMM makes me wonder. more of the tests should be back next week |

Sorry to hear about your pneumonia, hope you get better soon.
I think the scary bird-flu related pneumonia most often manifests itself as double-pneumonia, both lungs. If you are infected in one lung only, then is more likely that a traditional cause of pneuomonia is responsible. Alternatively, any type of flu can leave you more susceptible to pneumonia afterwards. So you may have got normal flu that made you and your son ill, and allowed something else to attack one of your lungs. Or you may not of had flu at all, and it was one of the other causes of pneumonia that you got, could have been from the bird poop or from a large number of other soruces. Anyway they have given you antibiotics so the assumption is that its a bacterial infection that has caused your pneuomonia, but that may not tell us the whole story. As Ive studied various health issues more recently, I come to realise that we are seldom ever 100% sure of exactly what has made us ill at any given time. |

I didn't think I got it from the bird it was just a strange circumstance. The doctor said we will see next week. I've had it before. just not in the past 15 years. Last time I got it took almost a year to get rid of it. |

I would question the accuracy of any tests right now.
Until H5N1 settles on its final gentic destination, the development of a highly accurate, inexpensive, and rapid test is some ways off. |

well the year I got the flu shot is the year I got a stomach bug nasty thing, refuse to get the flu shot now. I think the government sticks it in our systems to see which one works and which one doesn't
