Six hospitalised in Spanish Ebola scare44 minutes ago One more Spanish health care worker has been admitted to hospital for monitoring for Ebola, bringing to six the number of hospitalisations in Madrid, where a nurse has been infected with the disease. In the latest case, a nurse was quarantined at Madrid's La Paz-Carlos III hospital this morning as a precaution, a spokesman for the hospital said. Another nurse was admitted to the hospital with a fever last night and put in quarantine for monitoring, he added, confirming Spanish media reports. Three other people had been placed in quarantine at the hospital for monitoring after a nurse who works there was diagnosed with Ebola on Monday in the first case of transmission of the disease outside of Africa. The woman, identified by Spanish media as Teresa Romero, a woman in her 40s, had cared for two elderly Spanish missionaries who died from the virus following their return from west Africa. Among the six people hospitalised was the woman's husband, who is considered "high risk". Officials said they were monitoring as a precaution 52 other people, mostly health staff, who had been in contact with the infected nurse. |

It will be interesting to find out if another has it. I can tell you I will keep living with all this going on. Today I went golfing and I am now having a Tusker (beer brand here). Just don't shake hands and do not fear. You will be fine.

Excellent! I'm the same way 7. In the worst of pandemics, I'll still find the only open bar and sneak in for an appetizer, etc....

The one under the xxx's. You might be able to just cut and paste it. Don't spill the Tusker. Nothing is worth that.

I just posted this on Ebola Info
Excerpts from an blog I watch: my comments in ( ) Doctors in Spain hospitalised three more people and rushed to identify dozens of others at risk on Tuesday after a nurse was infected with the deadly Ebola virus, raising fears of contagion in Europe. The European Union demanded answers about how the disease spread in a specialised disease unit while health staff protested over safety failures. break "It would be very naive to think that there is no possibility of contagion," the government's health emergencies coordinator Fernando Simon told Cadena Ser radio. (such a different perspective than CDC) break Spanish government officials said the nurse began to feel ill on September 30 while on leave after treating the two missionaries, but was not admitted to hospital until five days later. Health workers' unions said the nurse had called the Carlos III hospital when she felt ill but was first referred back to a local health centre. The hospital's director, Rafael Perez Santamarina, said she was not admitted at that time because she did not yet have a high fever or other Ebola symptoms. (This looks familiar. Not admitted even though she had treated ebola patients ! ! !) break "Medical staff protested outside the main site of La Paz hospital in their white coats, yelling for Health Minister Ana Mato to resign. "People are freaked out," a cardiologist at the hospital told AFP. "We cannot understand how someone who was wearing a double protection suit and two pairs of gloves could have been contaminated." (must find out why or may have a repeat elsewhere) Health worker unions complained staff had not been adequately trained. "We do not have the infrastructure to tackle a virus like this," said Elena Moral, leader of the CSIF-AGCM union. (This is Spain in the EU not West Africa) break Complete article at: http://www.expatica.co.ukews/local_news/ebola-contagion-in-spain-raises-fears-for-europe_303878. - http://www.expatica.co.uk/news/local_news/ebola-contagion-in-spain-raises-fears-for-europe_303878.html |

Just saw a news report about the Spanish Nurse. Apparently the PPE supplied was well below the WHO's recommended standards. The clothing was porous. How dumb is that!
I also heard the unions are up in arms. They are demanding the proper equipment. |

Well, maybe the WHO should be involved when countries bring a case back for treatment. God forbid.

very irresponsible situation generated in Spain. how stupid can one be on bringing home a spaniard and not provinding best top equipment for the ones that had to work at that case... it is obvious that the most of the health staff didnt had the proper equipment, as they surely didnt bring that from home...
extreme stupidity.. how much more idiotic situation will we see in the next weeks and month? it just seems now like a horror movie with many weird twists.... like a stupid/bad/endless "scary movie"

The hospital's director, Rafael Perez Santamarina, said she was not admitted at that time because she did not yet have a high fever or other Ebola symptoms.
(This looks familiar. Not admitted even though she had treated ebola patients ! ! !) break "Medical staff protested outside the main site of La Paz hospital in their white coats, yelling for Health Minister Ana Mato to resign...... The medical staff is asking the wrong person to resign. The medical staff is protecting their own from liability. They need to oust the hospital's director, Rafael Perez Santamarina. When hospital staff is held accountable for their poor decisions ...maybe then they might start to think about the consequences of doing a lousy job of protecting the public. And the hospital should be billed for the costs of contact tracing and the expenses of quarantining the individuals infected through their negligence. The hospitals need to give ALL their employees a written exam as to how they woud handle certain scenarios regarding possible ebola victims. Those that fail any part of the test need re-educating or should be fired. And that includes the executives. It's amazing how fast a hospital can change their practices and procedures when they are notified they will be held financially responsible by being billed for their screw-ups. Hospitals, clinics, and ambulance service companies need more regulating when it comes to pandemics. Medical personnel need standardized testing. |

It really didn't take long for her to get infected. Flying him home probably sounded like a good idea during the time.
Spanish Missionary With Ebola Flown to MadridBrother Garcia Was Diagnosed With Ebola While Working in Sierra LeoneUpdated Sept. 22, 2014 1:24 p.m. ET
Doctors transporting Manuel Garcia Viejo, infected with Ebola, upon arrival at the Carlos III hospital in Madrid. European Pressphoto Agency MADRID—A Spanish missionary who became infected with the Ebola virus while serving as medical director of a Sierra Leone hospital has been flown to Spain for treatment. Brother Manuel García Viejo, 69 years old, was taken to Madrid's Carlos III hospital and examined by doctors early Monday, health officials said. He was feverish and dehydrated, and his liver and kidneys were severely affected by the disease, the Madrid hospital's head of internal medicine, Francisco Arnalich, said at a news conference. "His situation is serious," Dr. Arnalich added. (Latest: Ebola Drug Gets Nod From FDA) Brother García, a specialist in internal medicine and tropical disease, is a member of the Hospitaller Order of St. John of God, a Roman Catholic order that runs a charity for victims of Ebola. He had worked in Africa for 30 years, the past 12 of them as medical director of a hospital in Lunsar, in northern Sierra Leone. His order notified the Spanish government on Saturday of his wish to be repatriated. On Sunday, a Spanish military plane was sent to pick him up. This marks the second time Spain has brought one of its citizens home from Africa since the recent Ebola outbreak. In August, Rev. Miguel Pajares was flown to Spain from Liberia after being infected with the virus. The 75-year-old priest died five days later, after treatment with experimental drug ZMapp. http://online.wsj.com/articles/spanish-priest-with-ebola-flown-to-madrid-1411374266 |

Well if there's such a thing as silver linings, maybe this will bring infection control in our hospitals back to the forefront!
In 2011, an estimated 722,000 patients contracted an infection during a stay in an acute care hospital in the US, and about 75,000 of them died as a result of it. That amounts to just over 205 deaths from hospital-acquired infections every day of the year! More than half of all hospital-acquired infections were contracted outside of the intensive care unit. The most common hospital-acquired infections include: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2014/04/09/hospital-acquired-infections.aspx |

For those not wanting to shake hands any more, try the ebola handshake. Apparently in West Africa the hug has been replaced by this new 'handshake' whereby you lightly knock elbows.

Between TX hospital staff who sent Duncan home, and Spanish hospital admin who provide inadequate equipment to staff...apparently pretty bloody DUMB!!!! Seems like the officials are all competing and trying to win the "biggest Loser" prize!!! |

Oh, man, they didn't just fail to provide addecuate equipment, they screwed up in various epic ways too.
To begin with the hospital was not prepared for that kind of patient, it didn't have special rooms for the sick or facilities to clean up the medics, the suits were *****ty, instead of this: http://d.ibtimes.co.uk/en/full/1393643/ebola-berlin.jpg They had this: (it is actually a real picture taken by the hospital staff http://d.ibtimes.co.uk/en/full/1393643/ebola-berlin.jpg http://ep01.epimg.net/politica/imagenes/2014/10/06/actualidad/1412618449_833358_1412618626_noticia_normal.jpg They had to shower in normal showers that people keep using. And they had to use the same shower for the two step process: before taking the suit off and after. Directors knew all that but they were too stupid to face politicians, instead of refusing letting their people work in such conditions they decided to go on. Then the ambulance with the two guys from Africa wasn't cleaned, it moved 5 more regular patients before someone realized they better clean it up. Here comes the good stuff: staff was not put on quarentine nor on observation after the man died, no follow up, nothing. She had a fever for several days but went on vacation and also showed up in a national test (some kind of written exam to get a better job) together with 28.000 more people. After 6, yes, 6 days of high fever decided to call the hospital and they told her to go to her local tiny hospital for diagnosis, which is dumb, she should have had a special number where to call. She went and was then transfered to the big hospital where she was addmited. She had to inisit to get the ebola test done to her. Once the test was done she was isolated. Here is another real picture of how the isolation was conducted, I'm so ashamed to put this, but is the *****ing truth: http://i62.tinypic.com/25insoz.jpg Then comes the dog and the husband. It seems her and her husband, who has hsa tested negative so far, had a dog, authoriies decided the dog was a threat and decided to put it down, called the husband to get permission, husband refused, called the judge, judge authorised it, then husband posted a really retarded video on YouTube asking for help, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWvryyrpUPk - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWvryyrpUPk which got the attention of animal rights groups that went to the house to protect the dog. Latest news is that riot pólice had to kick some ass there to get the dog out, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ONAdyrlUAI - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ONAdyrlUAI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtB1EAPFlFg - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtB1EAPFlFg The dog it's supposed to be dead now. The house still is as it was, it hasn't been cleaned or nothing, neighbours are freaking out and leaving the building, no one told them anything and they found out that the infected woman lived there when press came to ask them questions. Now the oficial story: the woman is something between a nurse and a janitor, she entered the room with the guy from Africa twice, once to change his diper and anotherone when he was dead to clean up. She has now "addmitted" that after cleaning the diper she accidentally touched her face with a used globe, but that didn't remember that untill now. No one believes that, among other things there was one person supervising each and every move she made when taking the suit off and none of that was on record. As you see it's a chain of stupidity, from the highest politician to the lowest worker. |
