Mystery illness killed 100 monkeys in one tiny Indian village… and sparks fears it could spread to humansUpdated: 31st March 2018, 6:26 pm
Scores of the animals have been dropping dead in a remote community in Uttar Pradesh from an unknown bug. A MYSTERY illness has killed more than 100 monkeys in an Indian village in the space of one week. The animals died in the village of Dabarasi, in Uttar Pradesh and have sparked panic among residents who fear the disease may spread to humans. Police are investigating whether the monkeys were poisoned by villagers whose crops were damaged by the animals. Villager Ambreesh Tyagi said: “Hundreds of monkeys have died in our village." "Initially we found two to three dead monkeys but then nearly a dozen monkeys started dying every day and we alerted the officials.” The mass deaths have caused panic among the villagers, who fear the “mysterious disease” might spread and affect them too." Another resident said: “It’s scary the way the monkeys are dropping dead." According to the villagers, most of the monkeys passed blood-stained stool and vomited before they died.A veterinary medical officer, Dr Tejpal Singh, said post-mortem examination of the dead monkeys had revealed that their organs like the liver and the lungs were badly damaged and their stomach was empty. While villagers suspect the monkeys may have died due to poisoning or some mysterious epidemic, Dr Singh said the exact cause of death was being ascertained. Dr Singh said: “We were not able to infer conclusively the cause of death, so the viscera of the dead monkeys have been dispatched to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) in Bareilly and the report is awaited.” Source: https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/5945567/monkeys-killed-illness-india-uttar-pradesh-disease/ |
