The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is expected to announce this afternoon that the first case of Wuhan coronavirus has been reported in the United States, in Washington state, a federal source outside the CDC tells CNN.

The source is involved in the matter and was made aware of a CDC media briefing scheduled for later today.

https://halturnerradioshow.com/index.php/en/news-page/news-nation/1st-case-of-deadly-china-coronavirus-reaches-usa;

It is unclear if this person recently traveled to China, where and how they became infected, and if this person has transmitted the virus to anyone else in the United States.

Wow - this bug has legs. I thought it would be weeks before it got this far.
I wonder how many mild cases are being missed at this point? Without knowing that (or the true number infected, as opposed to the manufactured statistics we’re getting from China), it’s hard to tell how bad this could potentially be.

We still don't know the incubation time.....

I wonder what the incubation period is for this virus? Seems coronaviruses(SARS,MERS,common cold) have anywhere from a 2 to 14 day incubation period. I suspect this viruses incubation period is no different.

Yep, the incubation period is key right now as it starts to spread. Thermal scanners at ports of entry won’t catch people who are asymptomatic, but already shedding the virus. This thing is long past being contained. Buckle up, kids.

Given the number of people over here who have come down with severe pneumonia, I'm wondering if it's been here already for a couple of months and they have just recently begin to realize that they have something new.

Wondering when it'll get a name.

The article in the Times this morning suggests this new disease has a high RO number. SARS didn't see any secondary infections in medical staff treating patients, there are already 15 sick medical staff in China.

It also suggests the incubation period is 7 days.

Are there any cases outside of Wuhan? Except the guy in Washington state? I am asking for a very good reason. Are the people on all flights from China being inspected?

It's spreading exponentially from my observations over the last month. I can't believe how quickly it's spreading.

*admin please move post if not the correct topic area. (Long time fan to all the familiar members still here and you Albert) Gave up stocking and prepping some years ago. However thankful for the past years education. This is the first time in 10 years I’ve felt the hair in the back of my neck stand up at attention. So....quick stop at WallyWorld (haven’t shopped there regularly in 10 years), and the limited amount of stock has worsened even than in past in my opinion. Nothing bought out of the ordinary just some extras that will eventually be used up. But wow my eyes were really opened how quickly supplies will disappear if people become concerned.!!! It’s so very bad. Very limited shelf supply on an average day !!! Delivery to floor shelves has really ramped up in the past years. I’m in shock. Time to backfill my normally used home supplies. Cheap generic meds were very limited. Acetaminophen-ibuprofen- antidiarrheal (REALLY low, I bought one large package of each and maybe 2 left in the shelf) Benadryl, generic liquid Robitussin. Trying to create a systematic list of items based on availability and anticipated need, maybe in steps based on how if this develops. Categories in order in my mind; non perishables- water-meds-candles/energy- bonus comfort items. Anyone else doing a quick inventory tonight???

Considering the incubation period and that colleges are just now getting or have recently gotten back into session, lookout! It could already be in multiple states and we don't even know it yet. Then throw in their lunar New year and the inevitable celebrations.... Can you say brewing pot?

I bought some canned soups, rice, toilet paper, meat and need to get some dried milk and more canned/dry foods. Want to get some yeast too so I can make my own bread.

I'm with you about hairs on the back of my neck standing up. This one came and is spreading like mine of the others in the past.

I live in WA and I think using a clorox disinfectant wipe on credit/debit pin pads prior to each use is about to become the norm. Think about how many fingers use those each day. It's about to become my norm anyway.

Agreed on panic, but you may want to avoid public exposure at some point and have little time to top off preps. Wear disposable gloves under winter gloves (if you are trying not to draw attention to yourself), turn them inside out when you get to your car or toss in the trash on your way out the door. I would also limit pulling out your cell phone and leave your purse or wallet in the car. Limit the items than can become contaminated. Also, I wonder if Amazon would be a better option if things begin to get bad where you are, it would limit some contact with others. Take care.
PS- anyone remember a a model map info that is updated as new reports are out?!

If ordering from Amazon, remember the items are being touched by people in the warehouse and some items are sold by third party resellers...more hands touching items.

Good point NC. (And I do not want to sound panicky, I do have family in a major US city with international flight exposure, so I’m mentally thinking through how to advise them). So yes better to be prepared sooner than later, however was also thinking of how to handle the packages, bag up and leave in the garage for several days, while wearing PPE. Spray cardboard surface, leave package unopened for several days. It would have to be a supply of great need, there will probably be a run on masks regardless if this begins to fizzle. Might be helpful to know how long this bug could live on the surface etc.

43 people under observation in Washington after close contact with first US coronavirus patient

Washington state health officials confirmed Thursday that they have been reaching out to 43 people considered "close contacts" of the 30-year-old man who was the first confirmed case of coronavirus diagnosed in the United States.

The Snohomish County resident, who has not been named, identified people that he has interacted with since returning from Wuhan, China, and officials said that number could grow. Local health departments are reaching out to those contacts.

"It is pretty common for communicable disease patients. The more you talk to the individual the more you learn," said Dr. Kathy Lofy, the Chief Science Officer at the Washington state Department of Health.

The department defined "close contacts" as anyone who interacted with the patient and came within 3 to 6 feet (1-2 meters) of the infected person, for a prolonged period of time while infectious or had direct contact with his secretions.

Lofy said that the department has had some calls about other suspected cases that are under investigation. The department has been communicating with health care providers to follow up about patients who have traveled to China or had respiratory illnesses.
