Pennsylvania has confirmed 10 cases of the new coronavirus using state testing, with the latest coming out of Montgomery and Monroe counties.

State Health Secretary Rachel Levine announced the updated total Monday afternoon.

Three patients — two in Montgomery and one in Monroe — are hospitalized, Levine said. The others are resting at home with mild symptoms. All 10 are adults.

Levine acknowledged that one patient is in critical condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, but she declined to say where the other two are hospitalized.

In previous cases of COVID-19 reported in the state, the patients only had mild symptoms.

State officials are calling the cases "presumptive positive" because the tests have been confirmed at a state lab, but not by the CDC. Levine said she was not aware of any tests performed at the state level that were later found by the CDC to be incorrect.

Levine said officials are not recommending social events be canceled, but she implored those who are sick to stay home.

What do we know about Pa. coronavirus cases?

Since Pennsylvania's first two confirmed cases of COVID-19 were announced Friday, more have been added daily, and Levine said she expects the number to continue to rise.

All 10 patients contracted the virus in another state or country where there's a known outbreak, Levine said.

Montgomery County: There are seven presumptive positive cases of the coronavirus in Montgomery County, in the Philadelphia suburbs. All of the patients are adults. Two patients are hospitalized, while the others have mild symptoms and are resting at home.

Delaware County: One case in Delaware County, another Philadelphia suburb, involves an adult patient with mild symptoms who is at home.

Wayne County: One case in Wayne County, northeastern Pennsylvania, involves an adult patient with mild symptoms who is at home.

Monroe County: One case in Monroe County, northeastern Pennsylvania, involves an adult patient who is hospitalized.

Why is there so much concern over the coronavirus?

There is currently neither a vaccine nor an approved treatment for the new, or novel, coronavirus.

While younger people may experience the illness as a bad cold with a fever, the concern is that older people and those who have additional medical conditions will develop a more severe form of COVID-19.

As the disease spreads widely in the population, that could lead to a high number of patients requiring hospitalization for pneumonia or acute lung problems that require the use of a ventilator to breathe, as well as death. Data from China shows that about 15 percent of people who contract the coronavirus infection develop more severe illness, requiring hospitalization.

As of Monday, the number of confirmed cases worldwide surpassed 111,000 with more than 80,000 of those in mainland China, where about 3,100 people have died from the virus.

Worldwide, 62,392 people have recovered from the coronavirus, according to Johns Hopkins data.

Of 600 cases in the United States as of early Monday afternoon, 570 were still listed as active, with eight patients who recovered and 22 who died. Most of the deaths have occurred in Washington state.

Pa. school district to close; other schools reopen

KYW Newsradio reported Monday afternoon that Lower Merion School District, in Montgomery County, will be closed on Tuesday, March 10, after two students and a staff member might have been exposed to COVID-19.

The three people were visiting the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia facility in King of Prussia, where a cardiologist was later found to have the virus. The cardiologist is the patient who is in critical condition at Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, the news radio station reported.

Five Pennsylvania schools in the Central Bucks School District that closed on Friday over coronavirus exposure fears reopened Monday morning after a "deep cleaning," according to a letter from the district superintendent.

"We are aware of the heightened anxiety and concern that is present in and around our community. Many of us are parents ourselves, and we take our responsibility to care for the safety and well-being of more than 18,000 children very seriously," Central Bucks Superintendent John J. Kopicki said in a statement on Sunday.

State and local experts "have all advised us that our best defense is to control personal transmission through good hygiene, proper handwashing, and staying home when sick," the school said.

Keep up to date on coronavirus

The state Department of Health has established a section of its website for updates and guidance on dealing with the spread of the coronavirus.

"As this situation evolves, we will continually update Pennsylvanians through our website, health.pa.gov, our Facebook page and our Twitter account," Levine said in a news release Friday. “It’s important to remember that the most accurate and timely information regarding this outbreak is available through the Department of Health.”

If someone believes they could have the virus, or are showing certain symptoms, Levine advised they contact their healthcare provider for an evaluation immediately.

The provider then would then need to call the state Department of Health, and if it seems appropriate, collect a specimen using a nasal swab and send it to the state lab.

A lab in Exton is able to quickly assess whether a sample is positive for COVID-19, and the patient does not need to pay for that test, Levine said. Tests are forwarded to the CDC in Atlanta for verification.

Depending on when state officials receive the specimen, they can have results within the same day, Levine said.

No one should be denied a test for COVID-19 because of the cost.

Current number of cases in PA is 28, up 1/3 from yesterday, so far all those in Eastern counties.  But I doubt it it will be long hitting the Burgh.
