When McLaren Port Huron started restricting visitors Friday afternoon due to the coronavirus pandemic, not everyone was happy.

But Dr. John Brooks, an infectious disease physician at the hospital, said it is needed.

"This is the first time we’ve ever done to this extent," he said about 6:30 p.m. Friday after a more than 12 hour day at the hospital.

Brooks said by screening and limiting visitors, they'll help slow the transmission of the virus to both patients and staff.

Every person who enters the hospital is screened upon arrival, and anyone who is sick, including those listed on the accepted visitor lists, are not allowed in, Brooks said.

According to its website, McLaren Port Huron is restricting visitors in all areas of the campus, with the following exceptions:

  • Obstetric patients may have one partner and one birth support person accompany them
  • Pediatric patients may have one adult visitor
  • ICU patients may have one visitor if the patient is in critical condition
  • Visitor exceptions will be made for patients who are at end-of-life
  • Patients who are mentally disabled or have developmental delays (where caregiver provides safety) may have one visitor
  • Patients undergoing surgery or procedures may have one visitor who is expected to leave the medical center as soon as possible after the procedure/surgery
  • Patients who have an outpatient appointment within the hospital, laboratory, diagnostic imaging or a procedure may have one visitor
  • Patients visiting the ER may have one visitor

Brooks said the restrictions are necessary. For one, the average age of the hospital's patients is 75, coronavirus can be deadly to the elderly.

"By the time people get to 65 it’s a really different infection than for younger people," he said.

The second main concern is the staff's safety and health.

"I cant have my staff getting sick, because if they get sick I can't take care of my community…that's our job, its our duty," he said.

The Port Huron–Sarnia Border Crossing connects the cities of Port Huron, Michigan and Sarnia, OntarioIn 2017, inspectors at Port Huron processed 1,579,646 cars and 826,288 trucks

The Port Huron/Sarnia location can become a hotbed of coronavirus transmission because of the large volume of vehicles being inspected at the Blue Water Bridge.
