I expected shortages to show up, but this seems to be much sooner than I would have expected

The coronavirus outbreak in New York will get worse, with damage accelerated by shortages of key medical supplies, the city's mayor has said.

"We're about 10 days away from seeing widespread shortages," Bill de Blasio said on Sunday. "If we don't get more ventilators people will die."

New York state has become the epicentre of the outbreak in the US and accounts for almost half of the country's cases.

There are now 31,057 confirmed cases nationwide, with 390 deaths.

On Sunday, the state's Governor Andrew Cuomo said 15,168 people had tested positive for the virus., an increase of more than 4,000 from the previous day.

"All Americans deserve the blunt truth," Mr de Blasio told NBC News. "It's only getting worse, and in fact April and May are going to be a lot worse."

New York now accounts for roughly 5% of Covid-19 cases worldwide.

Ayup.  Cuomo's daily pressers have been warning about us fast approaching the threshhold.

Last week a NYC based designer, Christian Siriano answered Cuomo's call for help.  He has halted production of his fashion line and reallocated  his production staff, some of whom will be working from home, to make face masks and gowns.    I understand a designer in Los Angeles is doing something similar.

Ok, so I think 15% has been thrown around as those needing hosptilization and 3-5% ICU?

So:  15,168 at 15% in hospital is 2275 beds and 5%of those 2275 needing ICU is 114 (or 5% of total 15,168 is 758 ICU)

If we guess lower and say 10% of total infected need hospital bed, 1,517 3% of those is 46 (or 3% of total is 455 ICU beds) so I have no idea what city has available but guessing they are already feeling the squeeze, and yeah as numbers continue to double faster - it won't take long for them to max out.

If it's to be - it's up to me!

In yesterday's press brief, Cuomo stated we did find some supplies.  Enough to last us another week or so.  After that...?   Feds are not releasing supplies, Cuomo said, because they want to maintain supplies for future outbreaks.

NY State Dept. of Health hasn't updated their website in two days.  I don't think they have the resources to keep up.  I've read that cases here are doubling every three days.

I remember posting something on here back in February, that I was afraid Mardi Gras would spread this in New Orleans....I suspect that was probably a correct assumption (unfortunately ).

Now that you mention that, I remember that post!  I remember thinking 'it should be cancelled - what are they thinking', but then didn't think much more of it.  Would love to go see it some day but hopefully in more stable times! So guessing they went ahead with it - then this would explain the explosion...
