Food

Preppers stockpile food for themselves because they know that in a crisis it may not be available.

Nations should also stockpile food for the same reason. During the Cold War, the US stockpiled food, but it has not done this for years. We need to start again.

There are stories of farmers destroying food at the same time that shortages are starting to occur, partly due to a mismatch between the form in which the food is available and the ability of grocery stores to sell food in certain types of packaging.

The obvious solution would be for governments to buy up food from producers and store it until it can be processed and made available to the public. This would support ranchers and farmers and provide a safety net for the public. This is a no brainer. Why this is not already being done is  a mystery to me.

SARS-2 is spreading among meat packers because of unsafe working conditions.

Here is an idea, make the working conditions safe so meat packers can work without risking death. Testing and PPE should be prioritized for all essential workers. We know that this includes health care workers. It also includes workers in food processing, water sanitation and energy production. If private industry cannot or will not take the obvious steps to protect essential workers, then the government needs to step in.

Travel restrictions work. Why isn't the US using them?

There have been a few success stories of countries greatly limiting the spread of SARS-2 within their borders (Australia, New Zealand and South Korea). What do they all have in common? Draconian travel restrictions.

Contrary to what you will hear in the popular press, the US currently has one of the least restrictive international travel bans in the entire world. Even if we manage to completely stop all internal spread of the virus, (unlikely any time soon unless summer weather saves us), this will be for naught as we will simply get infected again from the outside world.

We need to close international airports to passenger travel for the foreseeable future and then impose internal travel restrictions until we can test and quarantine our way to virus extinction in the US.

Don't tell me this is "too expensive".

What have we spent to "stimulate the economy" to deal with the effects of letting the virus in? 6 Trillion Dollars! How much more money can we print before we have hyperinflation and the entire economy is destroyed? A few billionaire CEOs with international assets they are trying to protect and public health officials for whom globalization is a religion, are taking this country straight to viral, and economic, hell. The only way to protect public health, and the economy, is to choke the virus to death through travel restrictions.

Origin story for SARS-2

6 months into the pandemic, we still have no idea where SARS-2 came from.

Yes, it is related to bat coronaviruses. But how did it come to be so perfectly adapted to humans? Was there an intermediate species? If so, which one?

We have no good ideas. There is no real evidence that the virus passed from pangolins to humans. Why don't we know more? One reason is that the Dictator of China, Xi Jinping, still refuses to allow Chinese scientists to cooperate with international scientists. Why not? What is he afraid we will find?

Smallpox blankets

I am sure many have heard the story of how a British military leader (Colonel Henry Bouquet) suggested giving blankets contaminated with smallpox to Native Americans in an attempt to weaken them.

This is cited as one of the first instances of biological warfare. It's not clear that this strategy worked, although inadvertent spread of smallpox did decimate many of the original inhabitants of the New World. Still, most who know this story would say that even the attempt to deliberately spread the virus to others was evil and that Colonel Bouquet was guilty of crimes against humanity.

Given that Xi Jinping lied to the world about the transmission of SARS-2 in China; allowed Chinese citizens who he knew were infected to travel to countries around the world; and used his influence with the Director-General of the WHO to discourage nations from closing their borders in time to avoid disaster, isn't he guilty of crimes against humanity?
