https://www.moonofalabama.org/2020/05/cornonavirus-went-global-in-november-or-maybe-even-much-earlier.html is claiming first (or earlier) cases of Covid19 may have been in a care center in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Springfield,_Virginia

DJ-I think it is important to know as much as possible of this virus. But "political blame-game" cold war between US and China may cause fake-reporting. However on this forum (and my own experience) people noticed unusual long lasting coughs etc. last fall.

Is Covid-19 much older than november 2019-was it much more widespread ? (Could it be a "common cold causing Corona-virus that did go "wild" more or less in the same time frame at different places around the globe ?)

From the link https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2019/07/17/third-person-has-died-after-respiratory-illness-outbreak-greenspring-village-fairfax-officials-say/;

July 17, 2019 at 11:43 p.m. GMT+2

A third person has died following an outbreak of respiratory illness at a Fairfax County assisted-living facility that began more than two weeks ago, county health officials said Wednesday.

The outbreak at Greenspring Village in Springfield also spread to the unit’s staff, affecting 19 employees, Fairfax County Health Department officials said.

At a news conference Wednesday at the agency’s headquarters, Benjamin Schwartz, director of epidemiology and population health at the Fairfax County Health Department, said tests, including those conducted on 17 samples by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, have failed to identify a likely cause. Tests for Legionnaires’ disease have also come up negative. Officials tested for a range of common virus- or bacteria-borne respiratory illnesses.

Schwartz also reassured the public yet again that the company that operates Greenspring has been keeping the agency apprised of changes and carrying out stepped-up sanitary and cleaning measures to halt the infection, including limiting visitors, social gatherings, group dining and new admissions. The outbreak has been confined so far to Greenspring’s assisted-living and skilled-nursing unit, which has 263 residents. People who have become ill have been quarantined in their rooms.

But some families have not been satisfied with Greenspring’s handling of the outbreak. Terese Brewster, whose 89-year-old mother is a resident of Greenspring’s assisted-living unit, criticized the company for failing to notify families about the outbreak and keep them informed about developments.

Brewster, who lives in Arlington, said the company issued a written notice on July 10 about the outbreak to her mother, who has dementia. But Brewster said the company didn’t inform her or an adult sister who lives nearby until accounts of the outbreak appeared in the media. Since then, in phone calls to on-site staff, Brewster has received reassurances but few details about what’s happening.

“I’m just shocked. I just keep thinking if it was your parent, what would you expect?” Brewster said Wednesday.

Springfield assisted-living unit closes to new admissions amid illness outbreak

The complex is operated by Erickson Living, which serves about 24,000 people in a network of campuses for older people in 11 states.

Courtney Benhoff, an Erickson Living spokeswoman, defended the company’s response.

“Greenspring has been consistent and transparent in its communications to all residents, staff, family members and other stakeholders throughout," she said in an email, adding that the staff has kept the community informed through telephone calls, “in-house broadcast updates” and face-to-face conversations. She also said the Springfield location’s staff appears to be containing the infection, with no new cases reported in the past 24 hours and no new hospitalizations. Most of those residents who had been hospitalized have returned to Greenspring, and there have been no new illnesses among employees since Friday, Benhoff said.

The notice that went out on July 10 from Donna L. Epps, an administrator at Greenspring, said several residents had been having symptoms of respiratory illness, including fever, coughing and body aches. Epps’s notice, which says the symptoms recede in about five to seven days with treatment but have caused pneumonia, also announced limits on visitors, enhanced sanitation measures and other steps.

“You may have seen media reports referring to these illnesses as an ‘outbreak’, which we understand can be alarming,” Epps wrote in a follow-up on Friday that said 50 people had been sickened. “In this letter, I want to provide you with clarity, transparency and the reassurance that we are taking all of the proper precautions to safeguard the health of this community and the well-being of all who live and work here.”

Late Tuesday, the Health Department gave an updated tally, saying 63 people in the assisted-living and skilled-nursing unit have become sick. The agency said there have been no new hospitalizations since 23 people were admitted after the outbreak began June 30. The agency was alerted to the outbreak on July 8.

Carbon20 I will try to find out on this forum....remember being discussed earlier. https://www.avianflutalk.com/nov-dec-illness-probably-covid_topic42324.html  https://www.avianflutalk.com/nov-dec-illness-probably-covid_topic42324.html https://www.avianflutalk.com/oct-nov-coronavirus-italy_topic42277.html

DJ-The Spanish Flu may have started in 1915 or 1916 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_flu#History this Covid19 must have started from somewere-if not from a lab were did it start (and could it have started as a "strange cold") ?

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-italy-timing/italian-scientists-investigate-possible-earlier-emergence-of-coronavirus-idUSKBN21D2IG ;

Adriano Decarli, an epidemiologist and medical statistics professor at the University of Milan, said there had been a “significant” increase in the number of people hospitalized for pneumonia and flu in the areas of Milan and Lodi between October and December last year.

He told Reuters he could not give exact figures but “hundreds” more people than usual had been taken to hospital in the last three months of 2019 in those areas - two of Lombardy’s worst hit cities - with pneumonia and flu-like symptoms, and some of those had died.

Decarli is reviewing the hospital records and other clinical details of those cases, including people who later died at home, to try to understand whether the new coronavirus epidemic had already spread to Italy back then.

“We want to know if the virus was already here in Italy at the end of 2019, and - if yes - why it remained undetected for a relatively long period so that we could have a clearer picture in case we have to face a second wave of the epidemic,” he said.

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

Dr Cottrell had a lady call in who had a gentleman friend who was sick in August.  His Drs were completely confused because they didn't know what he had.  He eventually got better but when covid came out, they were curious and asked him to come in.  They tested him for antigens and he was positive.  So, it was definitely here in last summer.

Not necessarily.  He could have had it asymptomatically more recently, or the test could be faulty.  Our government desperately wants an antibody test and no manufacturer has yet produced an accurate one - at least not accurate enough to rely on.

Va. health officials warn of increased respiratory illnesses; Greenspring says no new cases

July 19, 2019, 1:59 PM

July 19, 2019, 1:59 PM

The Virginia Department of Health said it’s receiving an increased number of reports of respiratory illness throughout the state compared to previous years, adding that most of those reports are among older adults and those with chronic medical conditions in assisted living and long-term care facilities.

The reports are statewide and involve different diseases.

That includes pertussis (whooping cough), influenza, Haemophilus influenzae infection, Legionnaire’s disease and pneumonia caused by rhinovirus or human metapneumovirus.

A variety of germs cause respiratory illness, some with increased activity in summer months,” State Health Commissioner M. Norman Oliver, MD, MA, said in a release. “We encourage everyone to take steps to minimize the severity and prevent spreading illness to others.”

The news follows on the heels that three people died and dozens more were sickened by an upper respiratory illness at Greenspring Retirement Community in Springfield.

The Fairfax County Health Department said Friday that it continues to monitor the outbreak.

But the agency had good news: There have been no new illnesses reported in the assisted living and Garden Ridge areas for the last few days, and residents who have been ill are recovering.

The county health department also said the cause of the illnesses has yet to be identified.

“To avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others, it is important to wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing,” Oliver said. “To help prevent the spread of germs, avoid close contact with people who are sick. Anyone who is sick should stay home, except when seeking medical care. If you develop difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, immediately seek medical care.”

There was also an outbreak of respiratory illnesses at Heatherwood, an assisted-living facility in Burke, but officials said Wednesday there was no evidence linking the two outbreaks.

Per the Virginia Health Department: Certain groups are especially vulnerable for developing severe respiratory illness, including young children, adults 65 years or older, those with chronic medical conditions (such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and heart conditions) and those with weakened immune systems.

Extreme heat, such as the heat wave Virginia is currently experiencing, can also be dangerous for older adults and people with heart and lung diseases.

Tips to avoid heat-related illness include drinking plenty of water, keeping cool indoors, dressing for the heat and limiting physical activity, especially in the middle of the day.

Good find mwbab !

An idea that comes to my mind when I read the further spread in Virginia is that a number of illnesses were being believed to be the reason for increased respiratory infections-and also a heatwave does not make things better-but maybe a "pre-Covid-19"infection was missed ? (No reason to look for a new virus when other reasons can be enough-no reason for alarm ?)

Pangolins had a sort of Covid19 in march 2019 (see also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pangolin_trade )

In the comments https://www.moonofalabama.org/2020/05/cornonavirus-went-global-in-november-or-maybe-even-much-earlier.html#comments with further interesting links) from the Moon of Alabama story https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0960982220303602

Genetic analysis by Zhang et al published in April suggests that while the closest relative to SARS-COV-2 is the Bat coronavirus RATG13, RATG13 is a cousin, whereas the parent from which SARS-COV-2 came is Pangolin virus. The paper by Liu,Chen on the discovery of that specific Pangolin virus contains interesting details in terms of the timeline.

Malayan Pangolins are an endangered species. The scientists studied a couple dozen of these creatures which Chinese authorities confiscated due to their illegal importation.

"The Guangdong Wildlife Rescue Center received 21 live Malayan pangolins from the Anti-smuggling Customs Bureau on 24 March 2019; most individuals, including adults and subadults, were in poor health... 16 died after extensive rescue
efforts. Most of the dead pangolins had a swollen lung which contained a frothy liquid, as well as the symptom of pulmonary fibrosis, and in the minority of the dead ones, we observed hepatomegaly and splenomegaly."

Note the date, March 2019. At that time there was no fear of Sars-COV-2.

If one believes the theory based on Zhang's findings, that the Pangolin COV is transmissible to humans, then customs workers, animal rescue workers, and research scientists handling this group of pangolins would be at risk of exposure.

Virginia reports higher-than-usual number of respiratory illnesses

Maryland and D.C. health officials say they have not seen an increase in similar illnesses.

August 2, 2019 at 11:37 a.m. EDT

Virginia health officials noted that laboratory tests identified a variety of causes of the outbreaks, including pathogens for Legionnaire’s disease, flu, the common cold and pertussis, or whooping cough. In some cases, no common agent has been identified. In an update on July 29, the Fairfax County Health Department said testing conducted by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on samples from Greenspring identified the virus that causes the common cold.
