The Philippines are still reeling from 21 tropical storms which hit them in last years season, causing more than a million people to be evacuated along with many deaths. Now Typhoon Vongfong has kicked off the new season leaving a trail of destruction in the country as the situation in evacuation centres has turned into a nightmare due to social distancing with Covid-19 and a dengue fever outbreak.

MANILA: Typhoon Ambo (Vongfong) has left a trail of destruction in the central Philippines as it continues to hit other parts of the country, adding to the woes of hundreds of thousands of Filipinos who had to be evacuated amid the coronavirus lockdown. In Eastern Samar, where it made its first landfall on Thursday, the storm caused “unimaginable” damage to infrastructure, Governor Ben Evardone said on Friday. Among the damaged facilities were schools that have been converted into COVID-19 quarantine centres.

Several major roads were blocked by floodwater and debris. In a radio interview, Evardone said that many areas in the province were left without power and communication lines were down. “As of now, the storm has subsided but electricity and communications lines are down in some of the towns. Even the radio facility of the province was destroyed,” he said. He added that the situation in evacuation centres was a nightmare for maintaining physical distancing to prevent the potential spread of COVID-19. The volatile situation has been further aggravated by a dengue outbreak in the province.

I live on the East Coast in a hurricane prone area. In fact, I have had to evacuate many times to my parent's home more inland in the 20 years I have lived here.

This year, I am nervous about what to do if I have to leave. I have a dog, going into a shelter (which are schools here) with hundreds of other people is just not an option for me and with Covid in town....no way.

I would probably still head to my parents home, but sleep in my car in their driveway? Not sure. It does pose a dilemma. My elderly parents are not being safe at all by the way. They go out more than I have. My mother even went to Catholic Confession the other day (and they live in Northern Va which is not being opened due to how high the rates are there!)
I guess I can't mind that she went to confession, but the fact is, she took my immune compromised sister with her...oh vey!

I can handle tropical storms...that looks like what's going to be going up the coast with Arthur. I will feel the effects since I am on the border of NC and VA. Just have to batten down the hatches! I love storms actually, just not full blown hurricanes or power outages!

What's your elevation, Tabitha?  Curious because I'm on the east coast too.  Grew up on the South Shore of Long Island.  I learned it was all about elevation when it come to these things.

For example:  I was fine during superstorm Sandy even though I'm within walking distance of the Upper and Lower NY harbors because my elevation is 100 feet.  No flooding here although for the first time living in this building, I did feel it shake because of the winds.

I am in  the Tidewater area...no elevation...lol...we can't even have basements here. No matter, I have lived here since I retired from the Navy in the year 2000. I am used to it.
Its a 3 hour drive inland to my parents house if I have to leave. Oh, but one good thing about where I live, the Outer Banks of North Carolina...sometimes called the Barrier Islands has acted as a "barrier" to our area many times, taking the brunt of many storms.

No hills...flat flat land...in fact we have a manmade hill called Mount Trashmore that is a mound of trash they turned into a park.

Tabitha111, Witchmisspelled, https://www.wunderground.com/cat6/arthur-strengthens-en-route-to-north-carolina "Arthur" at first most likely will do limited damage to the outer banks-but it could stall and later on turn to the US east coast. If it stalls it can block a front moving east giving lots of rain in the Mid-Atlantic US.

Thanks for that, Josh.  This tropical storm is rather early, particularly for the northeast.  I hope it's not a harbinger of what our hurricane season will be like.  I can stand the rain and the wind from this.  I might be right on the coast, but I'm on a ridge 100 feet above sea level.

Be safe and healthy and preferably without bullet holes.
