“Why now?” Is a question I have heard a lot. I think that the answer lies in the immediacy of a perceived threat. Many Americans do not know anyone personally who has died, or even been ill, with COVID19. However, many people of color DO know someone who has been injured or killed in altercations with police.   And it is an almost universal experience for black people in the US to encounter racism from the time they are children. Right now, for many people of color in the United States, the threat of being harmed during a routine traffic stop is more immediate and more real than the chance of getting a virus.

I’m not saying that COVID isn’t serious. We are certainly taking precautions when we attend the marches we participate in. We wear masks and socially distance. But it is even more serious knowing that my nephews can be killed because of the color of their skin — that because they are black, they are perceived as a threat, and there are people out there who would rather hurt or kill them first and ask questions later than follow proper procedure.

I absolutely know that most of the people on the police force in our nation are good people. But I want my family to be safe, and until I know they will be because reforms have been implemented and awareness raised, I’ll continue protesting.

Totally agree

More people need to speak up about racial inequality.....

Cops need more training in racial diversity and community policing....

And less shooting

And white people who don't mix with other races need to Mix a bit more,

They might find they GROW a bit of character and  respect for others.....

AI,

Instead of all the endless, mindless stastistics....

Why do you think this situation exists.....?

Look at the causes......

Not at the end results......

And what is your remedy......

Let's try and have more positive input......

This.

Carbon hit the nail on the head. “Look at the causes.”

CRS did, too, when he provided an astute assessment of the challenges those living in communities of color face.

Yes, COVID19 is serious, and AI, if you want statistics, I can throw a ton at you that indicate how disproportionately this pandemic is affecting minorities in our nation. However, statistics don’t help.  Finding the root causes of racism and dragging them up to the light, exposing them and demanding change — that is what will help. That’s what the BLM movement is about.

In the meantime, while we are advocating for change, we wear masks and ask that others do the same.

I hope for peace for you all on this beautiful day.

The main reason I think is the lack of parenting as in 72% of black kids are raised in a single family setting. 68% of that is without a father in the household. That's where the problem starts. The problem is further exacerbated by a lack of education which goes back to the family setting. If getting an education isn't important to the parent then likely as not that parent is not going to expect their children to work and strive towards getting an education resetting the cycle .  Hard for kids to understand the benefit of an education when they see drug dealers with 100,000$ cars and lot's of money. And that's where proper parenting comes into play to show them the right way and some certainly do, but clearly not enough. Hands down that is the main reason for the high black crime rate.

If there was the sense of outrage and demand for change regarding black violence as there was for police violence then there would be real change. There's not, it's not as sensational to the media or beneficial to the politicians. FFS 85 shot 24 killed in a single weekend recently in Chicago and it barely makes the news and it's week after week it happens in many major cities and silence. Why is that? You want justice and the violence to stop be angry about the 7407 black lives lost last year due to the violence and the deafening silence and vacuum it seems to happen in.

And as a side note facts and statistics are used to bring information forward. Example CRS highly educated but seemingly unaware of the fact blacks under the age of 44 die of homicide at a rate 3X's that of whites or latino's and that it's the #1 cause of death in that age group for black males. Fact's and statistics complied by the FBI regarding that educated him or he would still be unaware or in denial of those facts. #factsmatter
