As the officially reported world-wide Mortality Rate for Covid-19 is closing in on 100 deaths / million population, I am wondering how that compares with other diseases.   In searching for mortality rates I did not find what I was looking for before I had to go out shopping, but I came across this CDC page for USA  https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/deaths.htm.  In a table from it I have added the current Corvid-19 data (which is only for part of a year not a whole year like the other figures).

Number of deaths for leading causes of death:

  •    Heart Disease   647,457
  •   Cancer: 599,108
  •   Covid-19: 173,176    (till  August 17th)
  •   Accidents     (unintentional injuries): 169,936
  •   Chronic lower  respiratory diseases: 160,201
  •   Stroke     (cerebrovascular diseases): 146,383
  •   Alzheimer’s  disease: 121,404
  •   Diabetes: 83,564
  •   Influenza and  Pneumonia: 55,672
  •   Nephritis,  nephrotic syndrome and nephrosis: 50,633
  •   Intentional self-harm (suicide): 47,173

So Covid-19 looks very serious,  as, despite attempts to limit its spread. it is now the third leading cause of death in the USA. It is already caused over three times as many deaths as ”Influenza and Pneumonia”.

But as it has a way to go to catch up with the deaths from Cancer and Heart Diseases it is not going to make a major dent in the population statistics, unless the mortality rate starts to climb more.

And so much under reporting,

misdiagnosis

Methinks
