https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-10-21/ship-with-mystery-covid-19-strain-anchors-off-sunshine-coast/12796842

A cargo ship has been forced to anchor off the Sunshine Coast amid concerns a previously undetected strain of COVID-19 is on board.

Key points:

  •
The Sofrana Surville has been forced to anchor off the Sunshine Coast after being linked to a mystery COVID-19 case in NZ
  •
An engineer tested positive with a strain of COVID-19 "never before seen" in NZ
  •
The crew is being tested today, with hopes contact tracing can shed light on how the crew member got infected

The ship, Sofrana Surville, sailed into Australian waters from New Zealand via Noumea on Monday.

An engineer who worked on the Sofrana as well as another ship tested positive to coronavirus in New Zealand on the weekend.

Genomic testing of the engineer's virus found it had never before been detected in New Zealand.

NZ Health Director-General Ashley Bloomfield reported today that the country had 25 new COVID-19 cases, two of which were linked to the engineer who came into contact with the Sorfana.

He said one of those people was infected despite only spending moments witho the port worker.

"Really we're talking about a few minutes in the same room," Dr Bloomfield said.

Keep us updated on this one!  The thought of a new strain is always scary to me because a mutation in the 2nd wave in 1918 is what made it become more lethal!

NOW is the Season to Know

that Everything you Do

is Sacred

What is key about this new strain is that the port worker who contracted it here in NZ was young and healthy and was wearing full PPE and only spent a few minutes with the man. Less than 5 minutes. And still he contracted it. Now that's scary.

Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesnโ€™t accord with the facts.
