We are all familiar with the no smoking laws and the current rock hard resistance to a national mask mandate to stop the transmission of a deadly virus that exceeds any death or illness caused by second hand smoke, this is the height of hypocrisy. How quickly any management would be on us if we lit up at a dress shop or grocery store. What I find more frightening than the virus is the willingness of officials letting this run wild.

https://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/basic_information/secondhand_smoke/index.htm#who-is-harmed-by-secondhand-smoke

Smokefree laws for all workplaces and public areas protect people who do not smoke. These laws and policies are the only way to fully protect people who do not smoke from secondhand smoke exposure.

https://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/data_statistics/fact_sheets/secondhand_smoke/general_facts/index.htm

Health Effects in Adults

In adults who have never smoked, secondhand smoke can cause:

  • Heart disease
    • For adults who do not smoke, breathing secondhand smoke has immediate harmful effects on the heart and blood vessels.1,4,6
    • Secondhand smoke causes nearly 34,000 premature deaths from heart disease each year in the United States among adults who do not smoke.1
    • People who do not smoke, but are exposed to secondhand smoke at home or at work, experience a 25-30% increase in their risk of developing heart disease. 1
  • Lung cancer1,8
    • Secondhand smoke exposure causes more than 7,300 deaths from lung cancer among people who do not smoke.1
  • Stroke1
    • Each year, more than 8,000 deaths from stroke can be attributed to secondhand smoke.1

Chronic diseases such as these are the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. They may also increase risk with respect to other illnesses.1

Health Effects in Infants and Children

  • Smoking during pregnancy results in more than 1,000 infant deaths annually.1
    • Adults exposed to secondhand smoke during pregnancy are more likely to have newborns with lower birth weight, increasing the risk of health complications.2
  • Infants exposed to secondhand smoke after birth have significantly higher risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).1,2,3
    • Chemicals in secondhand smoke appear to affect the brain in ways that interfere with its regulation of infants’ breathing.2,3
    • Infants who die from SIDS have higher concentrations of nicotine in their lungs and higher levels of cotinine than infants who die from other causes.2,3
  • Exposure to secondhand smoke causes multiple health problems in infants and young children, including: 1,2,3
    • Ear infections
    • Respiratory symptoms (coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath)
    • Acute lower respiratory infections, such as bronchitis and pneumonia
  • Children with asthma who encounter secondhand smoke have more severe and more frequent asthma attacks.

Similarly, we have laws requiring us to wear seatbelts, and not to text or drink and drive.  These are all things where we and others can get hurt if we don't behave responsibly.  We used to care about other people in our society; but not any more, I guess.  My mother has been complaining the last 20 years at least about what she calls the "I, Me, My, Mine Generation" (which she now calls the "I, Me My, Mine Society" because I pointed out to her all generations have become like this) and she is right.

I hear speechifying constantly about the downfall of civilization and its causes.  According to some those causes include working mothers, acceptance of gay people, declining church attendance, no-fault divorces, etc.  But I think if we are in downfall it is because we don't care about each other and the greater good anymore.

Lately I've been cleaning out my garage, and listing the things I don't want for free on my NextDoor app.  I give them away because I know alot of people have been out of work and need a break, and because I honestly don't feel safe collecting $ from people right now.  It's just easier to leave the stuff on the porch at the appointed time and let them come and take it.  I can't believe how awful people are.  Some of the things are worth a little money and I'm giving them away because I want to clean out the garage and use the space.  But these people trip over themselves telling me how much they want these things, and then they want me to deliver them. Or they can't come and pick them up because "oh, I didn't realize you live so far (5 or 10 miles) away".  Or "it's so late (3 pm), can I come over tomorrow?" And then you never hear from them again.  I wind up having to leave them out at the curb for the garbage pickers (who go around at night, take your discards, fix them up if necessary and sell them), or the garbage collectors. And right now in my area Delta is surging and workers are scarce, so nobody is really taking donations.  I haven't been able to even donate books to the library.

The world seems ridiculous right now.  Will it ever regain balance and common-sense?

I hear you! I used to offer up free organic buttermilk from my milking cows and local people wanted me to deliver it to them!!! I asked them to bring a jug or a bottle with them to collect it and that was too much. I used to get comments like "well aren't you going to supply a bottle?" as if I was a shop. In the end I stopped offering it and fed it all to the pig. I just couldn't believe that I couldn't even give the stuff away and it was the best quality possible, fully organic from an entirely grass fed cow. Unbelievable.

Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

Carbon, Amen!

KiwiMum, I would WALK 10 miles for that buttermilk.  I make biscuits and banana bread with buttermilk, and I would bet $500 that your buttermilk is alot better than anything I've ever had.

I remember that people smoked cigarettes in Oklahoma, US grocery stores & department stores when I moved there in 1984!!

Honestly, I don't know what people are freaked out about regarding wearing masks.  At first, I just felt silly, I was reminded of being in China where many people wore them for air pollution reasons.  Turns out, they were the smart ones!

All we can do is take care of ourselves and our own bodies.  I'm tracking vaccination effectiveness carefully, and we will have boosters before long, although WHO would like us to pass so that more vaccine could get to poor nations.

If only you all lived closer!!! This summer coming (we're in winter right now) I'll have a huge glut of food and at the moment i don't have a pig so I'm just planning how I'll compost the surplus. It's criminal really. I've just built 4 new large compost bins ready to receive perfectly good organic food. You can't give it away!!!!

Don't tell WillowbyBrat, KiwiMum; he already dreams of New Zealand.  Add in your glut of amazing produce and he would probably sprout wings.

It is a wonderful country. I'm spending today at a series of lectures in the city. The sun is shining - just - and there's no social distancing. We'll all be cheek by jowl. All the tickets sold out immediately. I'm so looking forward to it. I also can't wait to have lunch with all these people, I love meeting new people. If I could magic you all over here, I would.
