Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

Last modified on Thu 25 Nov 2021 17.42 EST

In a regular daily update on confirmed cases nationally, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) reported 2,465 new Covid-19 infections, slightly less than double the previous day’s infections. The NICD did not attribute the latest resurgence to the new variant, although some leading local scientists suspect it is the cause.

South Africa has confirmed about 100 specimens as B.1.1.529 but the variant has also been found in Botswana and Hong Kong, with the Hong Kong case a traveller from South Africa. As many as 90% of new cases in Gauteng could be B.1.1.529, scientists believe.

Jill and Becky here,

We are still here taking care of  ME  and Vicki.  It has been a rough few weeks.  ME has the flu and is in the hospital.  He will recover.  He has lost about 15 pounds.

Sadly, as long as people keep resisting vaccination (or we fail to bring vaccines to poor countries), the SARS-CoV2 virus will keep on mutating.

I fear that this new mutant will explode onto the world stage, it seems inevitable.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/weekly-trends/#weekly_table or https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/weekly-trends/#weekly_table weekly trends for SA cases +188% (last week 2,537, this week 7,299). Due to increased testing cases also will go up....

SA deaths +110% last week 103, this week 216 so "not milder"....Also some other African countries have higher numbers...however Botswana cases going down -38%...

Sewage-sampling could give further indications on global spread....https://twitter.com/peacockflu or https://twitter.com/peacockflu ;

This new variant, B.1.1.529 seems to spread very quick! In less than 2 weeks now dominates all infections following a devastating Delta wave in South Africa (Blue new variant, now at 75% of last genomes and soon to reach 100%)

DJ https://ceri.org.za/news/ or https://ceri.org.za/news/ may bring more info....

The case detected in Hong Kong has been staying in South Africa from Oct. 22nd to Nov. 11th. He had a PCR negative result before flying from HK to SA, and another negative after arriving at HK from SA. His 2nd test result was positive on Nov. 13th during qurantine.

DJ We soon may learn how this "Nu-variant" is doing in testing and vaccines...(DJ-Vaccine pressure in SA may be limited...however it just takes one person with immunity problems to develop a major problem/lots of mutations after long lasting viral infection...)

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

COVID: As coronavirus cases rise, is Israel on the verge of a fifth wave? Israel detects first case of new variant

See: What happens if Israel fails the stress test? Maybe it won't be quite as bad as that scenario, but the booster does not seem to offer anything beyond protection offered by the first round.

COVID: As coronavirus cases rise, is Israel on the verge of a fifth wave?

Israel currently has some 6,500 active COVID-19 cases, up from 5,000 just a few days before.

...

However, according to Prof. Cyrille Cohen, head of the immunology lab at Bar-Ilan University and a member of the Health Ministry’s advisory committee for clinical trials on vaccines, talk about a fifth wave is not the correct way to frame the situation.

We are in a very different situation compared with June, when we had almost no coronavirus cases in Israel,” he said. “We never managed to get to that point after the fourth wave.
...

According to Cohen, if there was still an illusion a few months ago that Israel could beat corona completely, it is time to acknowledge that this is not so.
...

According to Cohen, the question of waning immunity should be looked at differently.

“Mine is just a hypothesis, but I think we need to look at the protection granted by vaccination as divided in two phases,” he said. “For a first period after the shot, we are highly protected both against infection and against serious symptoms. After some time, though, it might take a while for our immune system to activate its cellular memory against the virus, and therefore, one might get infected but still be protected against severe disease.”

Cohen said this might also be the case for the booster, noting that he believes that “this scenario is consistent with the data we are seeing.”...

DJ Reported Israeli cases -40% (Malawi cases even -42%)...but possibly 3 SA/Nu-variant VACCINATED cases is alarming !

With this one if it's not harmless.....

Not holding my breath on that though.....lol

Take care all πŸ˜·πŸ˜‰πŸ’‰
