Denmark's health authorities said on Sunday that the country had seen a "concerning" jump to 183 confirmed cases of the Omicron variant of Covid-19.

The number represented a tripling of confirmed cases in  48 hours, from 18 confirmed and 42 suspected cases on Friday, according to data from the SSI public health institute.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) had previously tallied just 182 cases across all of the European Union, plus Norway and Iceland.

A school in Danish city Odense has closed due to concerns a Covid-19 case in one of its pupils could be caused by the new Omicron variant.

Odense Municipality confirmed the closure in a statement on Monday after informing parents and pupils on Sunday evening.

The Danish Patient Safety Authority (Styrelsen for Patientsikkerhed) said on Monday morning that the case is suspected of being linked to the new Omicron variant.

The authority recommends contact tracing up to “third” contacts, or people who have been in contact with suspected close contacts to the confirmed or “first” case.

There are indications Omicron doubles every 3 days...We soon may learn how good or bad that is...
