Epidemiologists examining the biggest Chinese outbreak of COVID-19 in two years are trying to ascertain why the proportion of asymptomatic cases is so high, and what it could mean for China's future containment strategy.

The number of new confirmed community transmitted cases in the major financial hub of Shanghai reached 4,477 on Tuesday, a record high, but only 2.1% showed symptoms. The share of symptomatic cases over the previous seven days was around 1.6%.

Although outbreaks overseas have demonstrated that Omicron was less deadly than its predecessors, with lower levels of hospitalisation, the rate of symptomatic infection was relatively high compared to China's numbers.

In Britain, estimates for the share of asymptomatic Omicron infections have ranged between 25% and 54%, government data shows, although testing has not been systematic.

Britain has also been ahead in lifting all restrictions as it and other countries adapt a policy of living with COVID while the Chinese government has remained cautious and international travel is still curtailed.

The lack of symptomatic infections in the country and the very low number of deaths - only two related to COVID this year - has raised hopes that China can achieve a "soft landing" when it eases "dynamic clearance" restrictions as it refers to a policy of lockdowns and mandatory testing.

How interesting. I wonder if that has anything to do with the covid vaccine they used. I believe that the whole of China was vaccinated with Sinovac and they didn't use Moderna, Pfizer or JJ at all.

Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

Could be that or it's just how the BA.2 variant is.

COVID outbreak 'extremely grim' as Shanghai extends lockdown

Shanghai recorded another 13,354 cases on Monday — the vast majority of them asymptomatic — bringing the city's total to more than 73,000 since the latest wave of infections began last month. No deaths have been ascribed to the outbreak driven by the omicron BA.2 variant, which is much more infectious but also less lethal than the previous delta strain.

Gotta laugh at the media's hyperbole "Extremely Grim" , yet no deaths and vast majority asymptomatic. China's pissing into the wind.

I saw a friend yesterday who had Covid last week. Her, her husband and teenage son all had it. They had body aches for one day, then a bit of a headache, and felt a bit under the weather for about 3 days. They didn't know if they had covid or a mild cold so went and got tested, and it was Covid. They are all fine now. The worse symptom was her teenage son who got spontaneous nose bleeds in the night for 3 days. Weird.

They are all unvaccinated.

  • Videos have surfaced on Chinese social media platform Weibo of drones broadcasting COVID-19 rules.

  • One of the drones instructed residents to "control your soul's desire for freedom" and stay indoors.

  • Other drones were also seen flying around Shanghai to broadcast masking and social distancing rules.

Videos have circulated on Twitter and the Chinese social media platform Weibo of what appears to be a drone hovering in the sky, broadcasting Covid lockdown guidelines to residents under quarantine.

One particular clip shows a drone with red, flashing lights hovering above apartment buildings, broadcasting a message loudly. The video's original poster said the clip was taken in a residential district in Shanghai.

"Everyone, don't sing songs on your balcony. Songjiang Jiuting Park residents sang a little bit and then there was a drone coming over to say to control the desire for freedom in one's soul," read the poster's caption on the video.

In the video, the drone is seen flying over buildings, and a robotic voice broadcasts the message: "Residents of Jiuting. During the pandemic, we request that you strictly abide by COVID-19 restrictions and related guidelines. Control your soul's desire for freedom. Do not open the window or sing. This increases the risk of COVID-19 transmission."

Other drones have also been seen flying over Shanghainese districts, prompting some posters who filmed videos of the drones to call it "a glimpse of Cyberpunk 2077," referencing the dystopian video game.

In other clips on the Twitter-like Weibo platform, drones broadcasting messages to college students were seen taking off. These drones broadcast messages that indicated that due to COVID-19 lockdown restrictions, one must keep face masks on at all times and stay in the confines of their college dormitories.

It's not just drones that are being deployed in Shanghai. Videos of robot dogs trotting along the empty streets of Shanghai have also been uploaded to Weibo.

One robot dog was spotted carrying a loudspeaker from which COVID-19 lockdown guidelines were broadcast.

"Disinfect regularly. Ventilate your home. Prevent the pandemic in a scientific manner," intoned the broadcast message, in a similarly robotic voice.

Coronavirus: Shanghai finds a record 3,200 cases with Covid-19 symptoms as mass tests uncover Omicron lurking in families in cloistered homes

More residents in Shanghai are showing up sick, as more than half a dozen rounds of mass tests found the Covid-19 disease lurking among family members cloistered in locked-down homes across the city of 25 million people.

Symptomatic cases rose by 20 per cent to a record 3,200, out of 23,072 infections, according to data of the previous 24 hours released on Friday. That brought Shanghai's total to 303,000 cases since March 1, of which nine patients - unvaccinated, elderly residents from 70 to 93 years - were in "severe" conditions due to their underlying ailments.

"Transmissions within households are currently the main cause of the sporadic spread of the Omicron variant in Shanghai," said Wu Huanyu, a deputy director of the Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), during a Thursday online press briefing, adding that contaminated food deliveries have exacerbated the "intra-family" infections.

No death has yet been attributed in Shanghai to the current outbreak, which has surpassed the sum of the previous two years since Covid-19 was first reported in China.
